CAMBRIDGESHIRE FRIDAY

FRIDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2021 Official Racecard £3.50

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Rowley Mile.

A very warm welcome to the Rowley Mile for the second day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting. We have seven quality races to enjoy this afternoon including no fewer than three Group races and two Listed races. The juvenile fillies have a chance to prove their ability in the Group Two Unibet Rockfel Stakes over seven furlongs. The winner will receive an automatic entry to the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in the USA in November. Horses who have already proven their talent line up in The Unibet 'You're On' Joel Stakes, another Group Two, which is open to horses of either sex who are aged three years or older. The Group Three Unibet Princess Royal Stakes would be worthy of top billing on many other days and today's event is set to be hotly contested. The Listed Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Rosemary Stakes is another high class race for fillies and mares, while the Listed Play Slingo Starburst at Unibet Stakes looks extremely competitive. We would like to thank Unibet for sponsoring all of this afternoon's races. We are very grateful for their support. We ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard which explains what we can all do to keep each other safe whilst on course. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Newmarket. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING Our Cambridgeshire Meeting returns to the Rowley Mile, you can expect world-class racing action, including seven Group races across the three days. Tickets available now.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING 23-25.09 SUN CHARIOT DAY 2.10 DUBAI FUTURE CHAMPIONS FESTIVAL 8-9.10

O N SA LE NOW

Today is the second day of the iconic Cambridgeshire Meeting, which serves as the perfect appetiser for a blockbuster final day of action here at Newmarket tomorrow. On this afternoon’s seven-race card there are no fewer than three Group races and two Listed contests, which include a pair of Group Two races in the form of the Rockfel Stakes and the Joel Stakes. Both are top quality affairs in their own right and the mile-long Joel Stakes often feels like a Group One race in everything but name. This very much proved to be the case 12 months ago when the QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Kameko roared back to form on the Rowley Mile under Oisin Murphy. While the Joel Stakes focuses on current stars, the Rockfel Stakes looks ahead to the future, with some top juvenile fillies winning this since its inception in 1981. Being part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” programme, today’s winning filly gains an automatic place in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar, USA, on November 5th in 2021. The winner of the Rockfel Stakes is worthy of your notebook, with four fillies having gone on to win the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas, with the most recent being the Jim Bolger-trained Finsceal Beo in 2006/2007. Elsewhere on the card is the Group Three Princess Royal Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile and a half. Some top performers have won this race over the past decade, with the John Gosden-trained Journey arguably the most notable of all. She was successful twice and went on to win the Group One British Champions Fillies’ and Mares’ Stakes at Ascot after the second of those two victories in 2016. The afternoon’s penultimate race of the day- the Listed Godolphin Stakes over a mile and a half - is another which warrants close inspection. The form of the race proved to be particularly strong last year, considering it was won by the Charlie Appleby-trained Walton Street, who only last week tasted Grade One success overseas in the Canadian International at Woodbine.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. POSITION OF STALLS

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and in this its 20th anniversary year will reach around 9,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs. They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving. The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives.

ALBAFLORA is the best filly in this field and should be able to prove as much with a performance of similar merit to the one that saw her finished second to Snowfall in the Yorkshire Oaks last time. The others are dependent on a flop from the selection, but Forbearance and Golden Pass are both reliable types who deserve respect.

A wide margin Group 3 winner on her previous start at Goodwood, Isabella Giles dominated the Rockfel last year, seeing off Nazuna by two lengths under Adam Kirby. She got a quick start from the stalls and was always prominent under Kirby, before the pair took it up after a few furlongs in order to set their own pace. She led the field for the rest of the race, and sealed the win with a good turn of foot a furlong or so from the finish, where she took a good few lengths out of her rivals. She extended away to win nicely, seeing off all challengers to win by two lengths.

MAJESTIC GLORY found another jolt of improvement when landing the Sweet Solera on the July Course tackling 7f for the first time, and with the runner-up that day emphatically advertising the form in Canada recently, she looks the one to beat. Jumbly has passed each test so far, while Girl On Film is very much the unknown quantity.

Winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas earlier in the season, setting a new track record over a mile in the process, Kameko returned to the Rowley Mile in search of his next success following that Classic triumph. He faced a strong field of five rivals, including 2019 winner Benbatl and the classy Regal Reality, but he battled and showed his class to win by half a length. Murphy made use of his guaranteed staying ability and took Kameko into the lead a furlong from the finish, with the pair staying on gamely to see off Ryan Moore and Regal Reality back in second with Benbatl back in third.

MASTER OF THE SEAS hasn’t been seen out since being touched off here in the 2000 Guineas but hails from an in-form yard and is fancied to make light of his absence. SHUTTLE BUS

A complimentary shuttle bus service on race days runs between Newmarket Town Centre and the Racecourse, starting approximately two hours before the first race and stopping at the first race.

The service picks up outside Hughes Electrical Store on the High Street and at the Train Station. The return journeys from the Racecourse commence around 45 minutes before the last race and continue for up to two hours. The bus will drop off at the Train Station and at the bus stop on The Avenue (just off the High Street). At the Racecourse the shuttle bus service will drop off and collect from outside the Grandstand and Paddock Entrance. We encourage everyone to take the shuttle bus back into Newmarket, but if you would like to walk, please use the signed pedestrian route. We wish you a safe journey home and look forward to welcoming you back to Newmarket Racecourses.

Tracey Harding joined Discover Newmarket, the town’s official tourism service, just a few months before the pandemic hit. We caught up with her, two years on to find out what life has been like. Well, it has certainly been a tough 18 months here in Newmarket. With a town so dependent on its racing visitors, including those from overseas, we’ve all felt the impact. However, we have been overwhelmed with the support of our loyal visitors as well as residents who came out and supported us just as soon as it was safe to do so. Thankfully, we are now seeing business return to near normal levels, which includes our own guided tours, and it is certainly good to be welcoming visitors back again. In addition to our regular tours of the Gallops, Trainer’s Yards, National Stud and the National Horseracing Museum, we have also been grateful to be able to run our feature tours. Visits to Dalham Hall, Godolphin’s UK headquarters, Juddmonte, home to the mighty Frankel and Clarehaven Stables to meet trainers John and Thady Gosden have certainly been highlights for me. It has been great working with the team to adapt and innovate our behind the scenes, guided tours during these challenging times. As a result, we introduced private experiences for up to six people so that family and friends could feel safe whilst still being able to enjoy our tours. These have proved so popular they now form part of our tours programme and are a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion as they can be booked on a day of your choice. We have also developed some new, themed walking tours aimed at different audiences so that even those that are not avid racing fans can still enjoy a visit to our historic town. So, do look out for our Food and Drink Taster Tour, Newmarket’s Racing Royalty Tour and our literary tour, On the Trail of Dick Francis. As I’ve discovered for myself, we have such a special offer here at the home of horseracing, with fabulous accommodation, eateries, attractions and activities, So, do please check out our website for ideas and inspiration and contact the Discover Newmarket team who can help make the most of your time with us.

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty in with a shout but it could pay to side with FIREWORKS. William Haggas’ charge made the most of a good opportunity after 4 months off to get off the mark at Beverley last month, and with improvement a distinct possibility, he can make a winning start to life in handicaps. Glen Esk has upped his game this year so he’s feared most, ahead of Rebel Territory and Mashhoor.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
