We are thrilled to be celebrating our first year of Coral sponsoring this prestigious race meeting, with the Coral Gold Cup the centre-piece, and would like to welcome you all to Newbury Racecourse.
Coral is the longest-standing and most committed sponsor in British racing, sponsoring races across both Flat and Jump racing that date back to the 1970s, and we are delighted to be bringing the Coral Gold Cup meeting on board.
Coral is passionate about horse racing, and we have recently launched a new and exciting racing club, The Coral Racing Club, that we will be promoting throughout the meeting. The Club is free to join and will give members the chance to experience what it’s like to own racehorses, as well as a range of other benefits.
Please also visit our Coral Virtual Race Experience by the side of the parade ring, and experience what it’s like to ride in a race using a VR Headset. Jockeys that have watched it, say it’s the closest you will ever get to actually riding in a race.
Finally, thank you for coming, and have a great time and enjoy yourself.
Simon ClareA very warm welcome to all our racegoers to the Coral Gold Cup Meeting, the first running of our most important jumps fixture under the Coral banner. This meeting is always seen as the start of the festive season here at Newbury, none more so than this year with the launch of the Great Christmas Carnival to accompany two days of top-class racing.
We would encourage all our racegoers to go and explore this unique event in the centre of the course which is open for all racegoers to visit during this race meeting. You can cross the course through the Grandstand enclosure to access the site all day. The Great Christmas Carnival runs until Monday 2 January 2023 and during this period we host four racedays where all racegoers can access to the Carnival site free of charge as part of their raceday ticket. Please note, additional rides or activities will need to be purchased separately at the Box Office. This is a new event for all of us and given its scale and location we have invested in additional track side big screens and new camera positions to make sure none of the racing action will be missed. In these challenging times, racecourses such as ours have to be as commercial as possible and this event can make a positive contribution to our business to help us sustain the very best racing product and we also offer all our raceday visitors great additional entertainment. The racing looks as competitive as ever with the much-loved £250,000 Coral Gold Cup taking centre stage and our thanks go to Coral for their generous sponsorship of the card, along with the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust. We are also delighted to host the traditional Retraining of Racehorses parade between the second and third race in the parade ring and the Injured Jockeys Fund will be in their usual position outside the Weighing Room offering all the essential Christmas gifts.
Wishing you a very profitable and enjoyable time with us and thank you for your ongoing support of Newbury Racecourse.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners first place only; between five and seven runners first and second place; eight runners and over first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Today’s four-strong parade features some familiar names who have already adapted to a new career, including the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Coneygree.
To help stimulate demand for former racehorses within the wider equestrian market, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball. For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk

An eight-time winner, he was also placed in the 2009 Hennessy Gold Cup and a King George. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie JerramHunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.

Arguably Carole’s Destrier’s best moments came here at Newbury, being a two-time winner at the track and also runner-up to Native River in the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup. It was in that year, while working at Neil Mulholland’s yard, that Maisie Bush first met Carole’s Destrier and “it was love at first sight”. On his retirement in 2020 his owner Carole Skipworth kindly gifted him to Maisie. In 2021, on their in-hand showing debut, they qualified for the Jockey Club National Championships and in 2022, having moved on to showing under saddle, they qualified for the 2023 Tattersalls RoR Novice Show Series final.

One of the leading staying chasers of his generation and the winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won several RoR showing classes and twice qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Show Series at Hickstead. The aim for 2023 is to once again qualify for the final of the Tattersalls showing series and the Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree.

A dual winner of the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival with career earnings of £500,000, Un Temps Pout Tout has been in the care of Clare Poole since he retired from racing in 2019. Although sensitive in his nature once his trust in Clare was established there has been no looking back. Clare says: “Tompy has been an absolute pleasure to retrain, he always gives his all and is thoroughly enjoying his show jumping and our goal is to qualify for the 2023 British Show Jumping Amateur Championships at Aintree, as well as doing some RoR Novice showing and challenge classes.”

With seven wins from 16 starts, 8yo Annie Mc missed most of last season due to injury but is ready to get back on track this season with the Cheltenham Festival the target.
An impressive 5yo, she was bought by Rebecca Menzies on behalf of Coral Racing Club in May 2022. Showed her class by winning her maiden point-topoint at Fairyhouse by four lengths.
conservative Bought by Scott Dixon in 2022, our 3yo has a win at Southwell and five further places from his eight previous runs.
Joe Tizzard’s 4-year-old gelding is yet to run. He was sired by Westerner, and his dam is Eternally Grateful.
Joe won multiple Grade 1 races as a jockey before turning to training. He’s taken the reins at Venn Farm from his dad as he ventures into his first full season with runners in his own name.
With well over 200 winners across flat and national hunt racing, Rebecca is a force to be reckoned with among a new generation of trainers.

West Balboa, runner-up in the Grade 1 Challow over C&D when last seen, Walking On Air, who is very much an unknown quantity, and Finale-winner Porticello are other fascinating contenders in a seriously hot race. 1-2-3: 1.MALAKAHNA (FR) 2.WEST BALBOA (IRE) 3.WALKING ON AIR (IRE)

The Coral Gold Cup was first run at Cheltenham in 1957 but was moved to Newbury after three years, forging a reputation as one of the most prestigious races in jumps racing. It has earned its place through the achievements of a glittering roll call of former winners, headed by Arkle, who represent many of the best chasers to have graced the sport.
Mill House, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River were others to have embellished their careers with victory in the 3m2f handicap chase.
There have been no three time winners, Arkle narrowly failing when beaten by Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966, and Denman finishing third in 2010
The late Fulke Walwyn enjoyed multiple successes with an unmatched record of seven wins from Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981).
Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful current trainers with three wins each.
Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore have ridden the most winners of the race, Robinson on Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), and Scudamore on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018), Cloth Cap (2020).
There have been four horses that have captured the Coral Gold Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth.
Native River won the Coral Gold Cup and Welsh National in 2016 and the following season landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Many Clouds remains the only horse to have won both the Coral Gold Cup and the Grand National at Aintree.
Last year's renewal saw Venetia Williams secured her first win in this race since 1998 with Cloudy Glen.
