The Ladbrokes King George VI Chase is one of the most prestigious jump races in the calendar and the roll of honour speaks for itself with all-time greats like Desert Orchid and Kauto Star entering Racing folklore thanks to their incredible records in the race.

This year we have a fantastic field for the race, and a brilliant supporting cast for all the Ladbrokes-sponsored Grade One races across the two days.

Coming racing to Kempton Park’s King George VI Chase Meeting has been part of my Christmas tradition since 1988 and I know it’s become the same for so many of you attending over the two days this year, and we want that to carry on for generations to come. So in addition to the fantastic horses and jockeys that we have on show, we very much hope that the atmosphere and entertainment around the racecourse sends you home happy and with great memories of your day.

Good luck if you are having a bet, but most importantly enjoy what promises to be a memorable two days.

A very warm welcome to the Ladbrokes Christmas Festival, the highlight of the Kempton Park calendar.
WELCOME

HORSE’S TRAINER

BETTING

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

OTHER USEFUL DETAILS

Days since the horse last run

Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs)

The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam)

Horse’s owner

Horse’s breeder

Birthplace of horse (outside GB)

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

FORWARD FLIGHT: Following its run on 1/11/2022 it was reported that the horse lost both fore shoes.

POSTMARK: Following its run on 15/9/2022 it was reported that the horse ran flat.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Him Malaya (FR), 9-2 Postmark (GB), 5-1 Artistic Choice (IRE), 7-1 Charles St (GB), 8-1 Samuel Spade (GER), 9-1 Chaos Control (IRE), 10-1 Dark Mystery (IRE), 18-1 Highland Frolic (FR), 28-1 Forward Flight (IRE)

POSTMARK is the most persuasive option given he was the best of these on the Flat and represents a yard that does well with its juvenile hurdlers. Him Malaya shaped best on his debut in this sphere at Newton Abbot in October and seems sure to improve, while Samuel Spade and Chaos Control are other hurdling newcomers to note.

Showing some smart form over hurdles, Edwardstone was always destined to be a top-class chaser in the making and proved this when landing the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase by 16 lengths. The seven-year-old showed an impressive round of jumping once again here. Held up in last, he made his other three rivals look decidedly average when clearing away between the final couple of obstacles. The superstar subsequently went on to land the Arkle at Cheltenham in March, followed by the Tingle Creek this season.

GLORY AND FORTUNE

Yet to get o the mark in his three chasing starts but he is a very talented hurdler, winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury. He looked to be booked for second place in the Arkle trial when falling two from home and if jumping better, he could be a threat.

AUCUNRISQUE

Made a successful start to his chasing career when winning at Uttoxeter. He looks to have taken well to fences and lost little in defeat when runner-up at Newbury last month. Should run well and he will be winning more chases.

DESERT ORCHID THE LIFE STORY

With four King George VI Chase wins to his name at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, Desert Orchid was an integral part of the festive programme at the racecourse and as much a part of Christmas as tinsel, holly and mistletoe.

It was, and still is, a career worth paying tribute to. In addition to his four King George wins, he was also successful in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Irish Grand National, the Whitbread Gold Cup, the Victor Chandler Chase and the Tingle Creek, which amazingly came in the same season as his Cheltenham Gold Cup victory. In truth, Desert Orchid was unique - on the day the inaugural Desert Orchid Steeple Chase was held, David Elsworth and Richard Burridge, his trainer and principal owner, were present as part of a memorial service to unveil a plaque next to the life-size statue of Dessie that stands near the parade ring.

In total, the ‘people’s champion’ won 34 of his 71 starts, fi nished runner-up a further seven times and was third on three occasions. He collected £654,066 in prize-money in his 10 seasons on the racetrack before retiring, after which he fulfilled frequent public appearances thanks to his ‘celebrity’ status.

Desert Orchid seemed to save his best for Kempton Park with seven victories from 13 starts. Four of the seven wins came in the King George and, as much a showman o the track as he was on it, even in retirement still made the annual Boxing Day trip to Kempton to parade to the packed stands.

The Kempton Park story of Dessie, who was trained by Elsworth throughout his career, began with a fall in a novices’ hurdle and ended with a fall when attempting to win the King George for a fifth time. In between, it was all about success. Ironically, his fi rst win here came on Boxing Day in a novices’ hurdle in 1983 – 11 months after his debut fall – before fi nishing third on his seasonal debut in October 1984 and then runner-up to Browne’s Gazette in the Christmas Hurdle on another festive visit to the course.

His only visit of the 1985-86 season saw him fall in a hurdle race on the fi rst start of his campaign, but jockey Simon Sherwood led Dessie to his biggest success here when landing the fi rst of four King George’s in 1986. A chase victory in November 1987 was then followed by second place in the Boxing Day feature behind Nupsala. The second King George arrived in 1988 with Sherwood again on board, before Richard Dunwoody took over the following season, which brought a third King George as well as the Racing Post Chase here in February 1990. By the end of that year, an amazing fourth King George was in the bag. When the 12-year-old fell attempting to win a fifth King George in 1991, connections decided it was time to bring the curtain down on a legend’s career. The horse, clever as ever, had made the decision for his owners – it was time for a life as a celebrity.

One of the less-open renewals of the Desert Orchid Chase saw Shishkin sent o as odds-on favourite after his summer break and didn’t disappoint to many fans delight.

He was taking on the highly talented Greaneteen, who was bidding to add a third Grade 1 success to his name, but was no match for Nicky Henderson’s in-mate who flew home by 10 lengths.

Shishkin, who missed the Tingle Creek earlier in the month, produced a terrific e ort and showed his class by going through the gears e ortlessly. He won the race going down to the second last and proved a class apart from his three rivals on the day.

The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission to all enclosures or eject any person from the racecourse. If refused or ejected from the racecourse patrons will not be entitled to a refund. When leaving the Racecourse please be considerate of our neighbours. Racegoers must abide by any regulations, including the observance of designated no-drinking areas and dress code. The dress code is casual in all areas, however, ripped denim, sports shorts and football shirts are not permitted.

Emergency Evacuation

Kempton Park Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety and Security measures this year to enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards.

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance.

Secondly should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via an emergency evacuation gate, to the main assembly points; the North Entrance, the South Entrance or the Holly Tree Gate. If these areas are compromised the evacuation will be directed to the centre of the course, where you will receive further instruction.

It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party.

The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; take your belongings with you under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA O cials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Kempton Park Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse a ected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
