RACENIGHT FRIDAY 14 MAY 2021

WELCOME Good evening and welcome to Hamilton Park’s Palmaris Services Racenight, our first evening meeting of the 2021 season. I’d like to extend a very big thank you to Palmaris and all the team there and at Patersons of Greenoakhill for their continued support throughout the pandemic and closure last season. Having such valued sponsors and partners has helped us enormously to plan for this season and be able to keep our racing of the same quality and prize money levels as high as possible. Tonight’s card sees the ever popular Palmaris Services Braveheart Handicap with John Quinn’s favourite, First Impression, taken on by two from Mark Johnston’s yard, the Trader, who won here last week on our opening day, and Notation, with stable favourite Joe Fanning on board. Local trainers Jim Goldie, Keith Dalgleish and Mike Smith are all wanting to spoil the party though, as does Shaun Lycett, sending Torcello on a 700 mile round trip for tonight’s action. Tonight’s opener marks EBF’s support of the Racing Welfare Mental Health Awareness week. Never more so have the services of Racing Welfare, and all other Mental Health charities, been needed as so many of us have struggled with our own mental health issues during lockdown. As restrictions are raised and everywhere starts to get busier again, please take the time to check on your neighbours, colleagues and friends and be kind. A few words of thanks and encouragement can change someone’s life not just their day. Thanks to EBF for lending their support to this great cause and also to tonight’s race. With the First Minister’s announcements this week about restrictions being eased from 17 May, we are so looking forward to being able to open the gates again to welcome racegoers back to our beautiful racecourse. With the help of South Lanarkshire Council and the team there working all hours with our own on the practical operation of this, we will be announcing soon how many people we can safely accommodate on site on 26 May. Keep watching our social media feeds and website for the news. Meanwhile, however you are watching tonight’s racing, have fun and I hope you pick a winner. Can’t wait to see you soon! VIVIEN CURRIE MBE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Second Race

6.10p.m. THE BOOK OUR ONSITE HOTEL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 5lb.

THE HAMPTON BY HILTON HAMILTON PARK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

THE PALMARIS SERVICES BRAVEHEART HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95.

THE PATERSONS OF GREENOAKHILL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE STATISTICS
