Midweek Racing
Good afternoon and welcome to Goodwood for the first of our two Autumn midweek racedays.
Today’s seven-race card comprises a mix of tricky handicaps spanning the age bands from juveniles to older horses run over distances from five furlongs to two miles, a novice event which remembers the much-missed West Sussex-based former DJ Ambrose Harcourt, and a conditions race for future stayers which honours the late Peter Willett.
A long-standing member of the Board of Directors at Goodwood, Peter is acknowledged as a bloodstock expert, turf historian and author, and widely regarded as the driving force behind the modern Flat racing pattern. His influence on the programme around which British racing’s most important races are built continues to this day.
Goodwood’s proud and historic association with the Royal Sussex Regiment whose officers, together with the Third Duke of Richmond, laid the foundations for racing here on the Sussex Downs in the early 1800s, is celebrated with the running of the Royal Sussex Regiment Handicap and we welcome with great pleasure today members of the Royal Sussex Regimental Association.
My thanks are due to the British EBF and to our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner, William Hill, for their continued and much valued contribution to racing at Goodwood. I wish them and all racegoers a pleasant afternoon.
Racing at Goodwood continues on Wednesday, 27th September ahead of the Season Finale on Sunday 15th October, and I hope we will see you then.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Race Summary
Not many can confidently be ruled out and the likes of Dundory, who won the corresponding race last season off the same mark, and the in-form Lhebayeb, who chases a hat-trick of wins, have to enter calculations from opposite ends of the handicap. Nevertheless, MOUNT OLYMPUS could be the way to go now he has found his stride for Alan King and a third success for his new yard could be on the cards.

GoodwoodRaces and The RoyalSussex Regiment

Visitors to the racecourse at Goodwood may notice a plaque mounted on the side of the grandstand facing the paddock. It commemorates the close association between Goodwood races and The Royal Sussex Regiment which stretches back in time to the inauguration of the races over 200 years ago. The origins of Goodwood races lie in the invitation by Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke, to fellow officers of The Royal Sussex Light Infantry Militia, to hold an annual race meeting in the spring of 1800 on the Harroways, a site upon which the present Racecourse building now stands. Such was its success that a proper course was laid out and a twoday private meeting organised the following May. A small wooden stand was constructed to accommodate the more distinguished guests and in April 1802 the first three-day meeting was held.
A long standing link between the races and the Regiment was the novel method of starting each race. In the absence of a conventional saddling bell, the Militia employed a bugler to denote a start. Initially he sounded the "cavalry trot", later a single note and the sight of the bugler in his position at the top of the grandstand was familiar to racegoers until recent times when his role was superseded by the introduction of commentary over a public address system. Although Goodwood lost its private characteristic, the connection with the county regiment was to remain, and in May 1892 officers of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment successfully revived a Regimental Race meeting at Goodwood. In 1906 the Regiment was given a site on the lawns upon which officers and their guests could meet on race days, lunching in a tent under the beech trees. The tent was replaced by a chalet in the 1960s and the Lunch Club continued until 1987.
The link with the Regiment was enhanced in July 1965 when the Regimental Association presented a challenge bowl for a race to be known as The Royal Sussex Regiment Stakes. Today’s race perpetuates the name of the Regiment and its close association with Goodwood.

NOVEL LEGEND has been progressive this season and he is fancied to regain the winning thread having bumped into the subsequent Ebor-second Sweet William at Newbury last time. Temporize is now 7lb higher for last month's course success but must be respected, along with Grand Providence, who is a key player in receipt of weight. Last year's first two home Aggagio and Earlofthecotswolds square off once more and have to be of some interest.

AMBROSE HARCOURT MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES
Today we celebrate the life of former Sussex Radio DJ and Charity Patron – Ambrose Harcourt – with a memorial race in his honour.
Ambrose broadcast across TV & Radio for nearly 50 years and built up a hugely loyal fanbase. Affectionately known as “Mr Lurve” his voice soothed the airwaves from the BBC to Southern FM and beyond.

His charity work was legendary, he was a vital supporter of St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House for many years – initially as a Patron, and most recently as a Vice President of the charity
He loved his racing and his close friend Ryan Heal wanted to honour him today as part of the Best of British Raceday, remembering the days out at Goodwood they enjoyed. Ambrose was a Member here at Goodwood for many years and even enjoyed a few winners along the way.
His wife Pauline, Ryan and other friends celebrate his life and times with us today whilst raising funds for St. Barnabas Hospice – something Ambrose would have wholeheartedly approved of.

Race Summary
Lope De Light performed well when third on debut at Chelmsford and normal improvement gives him a shout here, but it might be worth focussing on the two previous winners. Believe In Stars looked a smart type when victorious at Lingfield, but that was almost a year ago and perhaps recent scorer KING LEAR is the safer play with race-fitness on his side. He was super impressive at Nottingham and this step up in trip will likely suit.
Win: KING LEAR Danger: Believe In Stars great british bonus scheme
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

Race Summary

In a wide-open event marginal preference is for LIVE IN THE MOMENT, who failed to fire at Ripon last time but was fourth in a valuable event over this course and distance prior to that off a 2lb higher mark. Cairn Gorm is an obvious threat to the selection following his win over 6f at York in July, while Mister Bluebird and Aplomb are the pick of the remainder
Win: LIVE IN THE MOMENT
Danger: Cairn Gorm
