Welcome to the third and final day of our August Bank Holiday fixture, where the nostalgic British Summer Holiday theme continues to provide entertainment for everyone.
If you are joining us for the first time this weekend, you will find we have all the fun of the fair with a complimentary fairground, including a carousel and big wheel, as well as the return of the ever-popular petting zoo, and the chance to ride on a donkey.
Our thanks go to William Hill who are today’s title sponsor, alongside Weatherbys, and the family and friends of Gay Kindersley.
The Lennox Enclosure will be a hive of activity for the younger racegoers where entertainments such as live music, a Punch & Judy show, circus tutors and face painting should prove popular
I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and will be able to join us again for Midweek Racing on Tuesday 6th September Family Fun
The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse 1
This afternoon’s diverse bumper seven-race programme includes an exciting renewal of the Group 3 Weatherbys Stallion Book Supreme Stakes. Run over 7f, last year, the Richard Fahey-trained Toro Strike showed blistering speed to claim the track record under jockey Ryan Moore. Following the William Hill Selling Stakes, where the winner will be offered for sale by public auction in the winner’s enclosure immediately after the race, there is an opportunity for amateur riders to take centre stage in the Amateur Riders’ Handicap which closes the card at 4.45pm. The race is aptly named in memory of Gay Kindersley, who was British champion amateur jumps jockey in the 1959-60 season notching up 22 winners, before turning his attentions to training.

THE WEATHERBYS STALLION BOOK SUPREME STAKES (GROUP 3)
Another with form in the race previously is Chris Wall’s mare Double Or Bubble, who finished runnerup 12 months ago, beaten a couple of lengths by Toro Strike. Another who seems at her best on quicker ground, prevailing conditions would be a minor concern, although she is another who drops in class, having last contested the Group 1 July Cup One heading in the other direction is Misty Grey, with Tom Dascombe’s five-year-old having just his second start in Group company since his juvenile days in 2019, when trained by Mark Johnston. A five-time winner for his current stable, all five victories were gained on an all-weather surface, most recently at Chelmsford in July Back up to a mark of 108, he is entitled to take his chance, although his overall record to date suggests that he falls just below the required level.
Paul Ferguson Happy Power Double Or Bubble
Happy Power won this race in 2020 and doesn’t mind soft ground. A winner in Listed company at Leicester earlier in the season, he isn’t always the most consistent but Andrew Balding’s grey is another who ran well at the Glorious meeting, when fourth in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes, where he only gave best inside the final furlong. He had Ever Given back in sixth on that occasion and is better off at the weights with Hugo Palmer’s colt, so really ought to confirm the form. If he is on a going day, the six-year-old should go close under William Buick. Ever Given is himself a course winner albeit over six furlongs and that success came on good-to-soft ground, so conditions shouldn’t be an issue A winner on soft at Chester on his reappearance in May, he remains lightly-raced and boasts a fine overall strike-rate, having won six of his 13 career starts. If I’m A Gambler does indeed miss the race, he will be the sole threeyear-old in the field and perhaps more significantly, his form figures on good-tosoft or soft ground reads 151141.
Today’s feature race is the Weatherbys Stallion Book Supreme Stakes, a Group 3 contest over seven furlongs. At the five-day stage, the most interesting entrant was the improving four-year-old Mutasaabeq, but with Charlie Hill electing to run him in Saturday’s Celebration Mile, the race has an open feel to it, despite the fact that just six have been declared. One of those is the Charlie and Mark Johnston-trained I’m A Gambler, who has been doubly-declared, with the three-year-old also having been confirmed to run on Saturday’s card. An impressive winner over course-and-distance at the Glorious meeting, the No Nay Never gelding looks set to contest another handicap from a 5lbs higher mark and if doing so, is likely to be a non-runner this afternoon. A horse who enjoys a fast surface, the likely rain-softened ground would be a concern and the weather is probably the reason that options remain open.
Sunset Bay represents Ed Walker and is another who has done her winning in handicap company, with her two career wins last summer being gained from marks of just 74 and 80 respectively The first of those came on soft ground at Newbury and it looked as though the run was needed on her belated reappearance at Haydock earlier in the month. Having had just the one start as a four-year-old, she remains open to considerable improvement, but will need to take a big step forward and would need to put in a career-best.

A former champion amateur jump jockey who later turned to training, Gay was one of the most engaging figures on the racecourse. A natural raconteur born with an easy charm, Gay particularly enjoyed his long association with The Amateur Jockeys Association, making lifelong friends wherever he went. He broke his back twice during his career but continued to ride against doctor’s orders and his last winning ride was in Belgium in 1969.
Today’s Goodwood Amateur Rider Challenge Handicap Stakes is run in memory of Gay Kindersely
On retiring from training in 1985, Gay played a full and highly valued role as President of the Amateur Jockeys Association. He will always be remembered with great fondness by all of his many friends for his wonderful sense of humour and utmost humility
After retiring as an amateur jockey, Gay became an established trainer in Berkshire. His lifelong ambition was to win a Grand National and he came agonisingly close to achieving this when his part-owned Carrickbeg, ridden by his dear friend Lord Oaksey, was caught by Ayala in the final strides of the race in 1963.
