RA CEC OURSE
Fakenham

WELCOME

Thank you for joining us at our unexpected but welcome additional race day The continual rain has taken its toll at many racecourses around the country, hence this extra day and fingers crossed the weather is kind to us.

Our races today are supported by Racing TV, who have a special £12 a month subscription if you sign up during April, and also HorsePWR. HorsePWR is a new campaign that is being run by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), Great British Racing (GBR) and racing’s Horse Welfare Board (HWB) and focusses on providing the facts around safety and welfare in horseracing. Have a look at the website to learn more about the life of a thoroughbred from their birth through to their retirement – www.horsepwr.co.uk.

We are taking advantage of sharing today with Aintree Ladies Day to show all their races live on our screens through the day, so we can enjoy a Fakenham/Aintree special.

The North and West Norfolk Hunt Point to Point is taking place on 21 April here at Fakenham and worth a visit. Tickets are £12.50 in advance through our website or £15 on the day

We then have our final two race meets of the season.

- The Gamble Plant Norfolk National Day on 7 May includes a Greene King Beer Festival and the Norfolk Grand National.

- The Jarrold Ladies Day on Sunday 2 June has a post racing DJ / party and this year KL Magazine are running the best dressed competition, so time to go hat shopping!

Check out our website – www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk for advance discounted tickets for all our race meets and the few remaining hospitality options available for Jarrold Ladies Day

Have a wonderful day today and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ Selected to win the race.

★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Monday 1st April

Our Aldiss raceday saw six exciting races take place throughout the day, with some impressive performances and great finishes on show.

A Juvenile Maiden Hurdle kicked off proceedings, with eight runners going to post. Camarrate was a well supported favourite for Donald McCain and Brian Hughes, with the four-year-old already winning on the flat. He had run with plenty of credit on both starts over obstacles and made use of that experience to land the prize here. There looked to be plenty to like about the way he ran on under Brian Hughes and will no doubt be competitive when stepping into handicap company. Blue Universe was never quite able to get on terms with the winner but may well be seen to better effect when going the other way round, as he did jump out to his right a little. There certainly looks to be ability there and he will win races in time.

Glance At Me had finished second in this race 12 months ago and went one better despite being 5lb higher this time around. She isn’t overly raced these days but found herself with optimum conditions under the very

useful claimer, James Martin. Billams Legacy ran creditably back in second after a lengthy break and should strip fitter for that effort on her next start. Omaha Wish wasn’t beaten a million miles away into third and remains unexposed for the Skelton team.

LAST TIME

DON’T MISS OUR NEXT MEETING

Gamble Plant Norfolk National Raceday Tuesday 7th May. SEE YOU THERE!

It didn’t take long for Brian Hughes to get his second win of the afternoon, with Ingennio romping home by 39 lengths. Jerrash had been well supported for Gary Moore and Gavin Sheehan but looked to be an uncomfortable ride. He was found to have bled post race, which may have explained the poor showing. Nothing can be taken away from Ingennio however, who was an impressive winner

Eclair De Beaufeu was once a useful yardstick but looked to lose his way in recent years after a number of stable changes. As a result he’d slipped nicely down the weights and capitalised for new trainer Sarah Humphrey under James Best. He wasn’t well found in the market but produced a performance somewhat back to his best. He only cost 5000gns and it will be interesting to see if he can’t follow up this victory next start.

Cloudy Wednesday made it two wins at the track after obliging in our penultimate race. His previous win had come over two miles and five furlongs but he looked to have no issue coping with the step up. The yard have him in fine form at the moment and it would be no surprise to see him win again. Via Dante is yet to win a race but there was more encouragement to be had from his second placed effort, pulling clear of the remainder.

Our final race was a Mares’ Maiden Flat race that saw Brian Hughes bring up his hat-trick on the day for Harry Fry. Star Walking was a winner of her sole start pointing in Ireland and needed some firm driving to win on her debut under rules. She shaped as though she’ll be better when sent over a trip and is likely one for the future. Briery Bee ran a sound race on debut and should benefit from a stiffer track.

An ultra-competitive handicap. MAKING HEADWAY is one who should have more to offer now stepping up to 2 1/2m so he’s the suggestion on the back of his good run in the Imperial Cup. If the refitting of a hood helps Ocastle des Mottes to settle better he could pose a big threat Kateira, one of five for Dan Skelton, bounced back to form at Kempton recently and ran a blinder at this meeting last year so she’s also on the shortlist along with Formby winner Jango Baie and Fergal O’Brien Kamsinas.

DOGS

Well behaved dogs (and owners!) are allowed at Fakenham Race Meetings, but they MUST be on a short lead at ALL times and are NOT allowed inside any bars, buildings, grandstand steppings or in very crowded areas.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

PLAY SMARTER

It wouldn’t be any great surprise were the Irish raiders to dominate with ZEEBAND spearheading the half-a-dozen challengers from across the pond. He has got his act together over hurdles in recent weeks and there could be even more to come from him given his exploits on the Flat a few years ago. Maidenstreetprince was going toe-to-toe with Sir Gerhard when falling 2 out at Cork last time and he is greatly respected, while Eagles Reign and the unexposed Brucio are others to consider
