SOME RACES CAN ONLY BE WON TOGETHER The Investec Derby Day will be run this year, the 241st running of the event, a statement we weren’t sure we’d be able make as recently as a month ago. The race remains the world’s oldest continually run sporting event and success remains meaningful in these extraordinary circumstances. We know that community spirit is at the heart of this event. In these challenging times, we wanted to use this occasion to highlight that some races can only be won together. At Investec we are committed to living in society, not off it, and now more than ever, that really matters. Since April, we’ve used our network to create new supply chains for 18 food banks around the United Kingdom. We’re fully funding and supplying each centre with around 16,000 items per week. To learn more about our work with food banks or how the Investec Derby was made possible in just 35 days, please click here.

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

The 241st running of The Derby will be very different to those we have seen before. Thanks to the hard work of so many, we are pleased that we are able to hold this incredibly important race at Epsom Downs Racecourse today. Horses have just one chance to compete in the Investec Derby and the Investec Oaks. This year, for the first time in history, these races will be run on the same day. The culmination of careful breeding, three years of training and a dedicated team lead up to this moment. Running these Classics today, behind closed doors, enables these horses to have their chance while ensuring the industry can continue to breed future champions. Thank you for joining us from home today to celebrate the pinnacle of our sport. The teams at ITV Racing and Racing TV have done a superb job of bringing us fantastic coverage of the QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket, Royal Ascot, and all of the Derby Trials across the country, but now it is time for Epsom Downs to take centre stage. To all of those watching today and wherever you may be, I hope you have a fantastic day. We look forward to welcoming you back to the home of the Greatest Flat Race in the World next year. Stay safe and best wishes,

Julia Budd Epsom Downs Racecourse Chairman

RACING SAFELY BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Epsom Downs is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. From Saturday 4th July, a maximum of two owners (or their representatives) per horse running in the race meeting will be permitted to attend, subject to specific protocols - detailled on the BHA website. All attendees at Epsom Downs will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. For more information on how racing at Epsom Downs and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

ENJOYING INVESTEC DERBY DAY

FROM HOME

We’re sorry that we’re unable to invite the public to Epsom Downs Racecourse this year to celebrate Investec Derby Day all together. However, we are inviting everyone to enjoy the day from the safety of their own home with a Great British Garden Party pack to download and bring the sparkle of Epsom Downs Racecourse wherever you’re watching! The Great British Garden party pack contains recipes from The Jockey Club’s Head of Culinary, bunting to decorate the garden, bingo to play along whilst watching ITV Racing and so much more. This colourful pack also provides the opportunity to win an incredible prize from The Jockey Club’s sparkling wine partner, Coates & Seely. The prize includes a private tour of the vineyard with curated tastings of their incredible wines followed by a delicious locally sourced, and perfectly paired lunch. All we’re asking is for everyone to send in their at home setup, using #InvestecDerbyDay to the Epsom Downs Racecourse social channels. The Great British Garden Party is available to download from the Epsom Downs Racecourse website, alongside exclusive behind the scenes content and FAQs on how the day will be run. Don’t forget to spread the message to friends and family to get involved!

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S

TOP TIPS RACE ONE

Godolphin’s MODERN NEWS was a good winner on his racecourse debut at Newmarket, but found the step up to seven furlongs on soft ground in the Chesham at Royal Ascot a step too far. The return to six furlongs will suit and this son of Shamardal can get back to winning ways. Mutazawwed improved for the step up to six furlongs when winning last time out at Lingfield and could prove the main threat.

RACE TWO

SAFE VOYAGE was just touched off by last year’s winner of this race, Space Blues, on his seasonal reappearance at Haydock four weeks ago, but can gain compensation here in a grade where he has plenty of winning form. Daarik has disappointed twice on turf, including recently at Royal Ascot, and has to prove he’s as good on this surface, while Shine So Bright also has a disappointing effort at the Royal meeting to bounce back from.

RACE THREE

After bolting up by eight and a half lengths at Newmarket last week, DESERT ICON is surely well-in under a 6lb penalty for that success, so should run a big race again here under James Doyle. Perhaps You’re Hired, another wide-margin winner at Newmarket, will be the biggest threat after going up just 7lb for a 14-length demolition of his rivals that day. Caradoc and Ironclad can also get involved.

RACE FOUR

While 1000 Guineas victor, Love, is sure to be a warm order for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore team, FRANKLY DARLING was a deeply impressive winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and has already proven she stays the trip well. She could give John Gosden and Frankie Dettori their third winner of the Investec Oaks in the last four years. Ennistymon could once again chase her home.

RACE FIVE

Fooraat was a stylish seven-length winner at Chelmsford on her first run at three and will likely be involved at the business end here, while Cloak Of Spirits has run good races in the Group 1 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes this season and will appreciate this drop in class. However, LOVE AND THUNDER looked a real prospect when winning a decent Newbury maiden three weeks ago and could improve past them all.

RACE SIX

A fascinating Investec Derby with Lingfield Derby Trial winner, English King, and 2000 Guineas champion, Kameko, towards the head of the queue. However, given Aidan O’Brien’s incredible record in the race, perhaps it will pay to side with the unexposed VATICAN CITY, who flew home for second behind the brilliant Siskin in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. His stablemate, Russian Emperor, may also be in the shake-up after winning at Royal Ascot in good style.

RACE SEVEN

An extremely competitive handicap to close out Investec Derby Day and the seven-furlong contest can go to the Ian Williams-trained veteran, REPUTATION, who is back below his last winning mark and has winning course form to his name. Magical Wish shouldn’t be far away thanks to his rider’s 5lb claim, while Corazon Espinado should put up a good showing in defence of the crown he won in this race last year.

A DERBY IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES Behind the scenes: How Epsom Downs staged the Investec Derby 2020 This year marks the 241st running of the Investec Derby, but not as we all know it. In these unprecedented times, one of the biggest events in the international horse racing calendar has been pulled together in just 35 days. You could be forgiven for thinking less crowds means less work, but that hasn’t been the case. Careful planning has gone on behind the scenes – from creating socially distanced spaces for jockeys to getting the track into peak condition. While there will be no vibrant atmosphere from the crowds, winning the Investec Derby is still the childhood dream of many horse racing professionals. It’s proof that a jockey and horse have what it takes to perform at the very highest level and victory remains prestigious. In this video, Simon Durrant, general manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, Andrew Cooper, clerk of the course and head of racing at Epsom, and leading jockey Tom Marquand discuss the differences you will see at this year’s Investec Derby and the extensive preparation required to make it happen.

PINATUBO

Ridden by William Buick Owned by Godolphin Trained by Charlie Appleby

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Charlie Appleby saddled Pinatubo to win this race 12 months ago and although Modern News isn't that calibre, he can better his effort in the Chesham dropped in both trip and class. Lingfield scorer Mutazawwed could well get his own way out in front and will be dangerous if so, but TWAASOL looks the one to beat for Owen Burrows and Martin Harley. There was a lot to like about his debut success at Windsor and he looks a Group performer in the making.

A JOYFUL ASSOCIATION

THE QUEEN & THE DERBY Since first attending The Derby in 1946 as a Princess, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has only ever missed the race twice - while today’s renewal will be the third, The Queen and The Derby remain intrinsically linked. A keen rider since the age of six; by adulthood Elizabeth was an accomplished rider, and a few weeks after her 20th birthday, Princess Elizabeth accompanied her father, King George VI, to the Derby at Epsom. The Royal Family and Horseracing had always had a significant connection and within a few years, the future Queen regularly attended Epsom’s showpiece meeting - an association that would endure for more than 70 years. As The Queen, one of Elizabeth II’s first actions was the Coronation Honours List, in which Gordon Richards, Champion Jockey, was knighted. Her Majesty attended the Epsom Derby for the first time in the summer of 1953, and, fittingly, Gordon Richards was successful in his 28th and final attempt to win the world’s greatest Flat race. Riding Pinza, Richards succeeded where he had fallen short 27 times previously, ironically defeating Aureole, owned by none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s arrival by motorcade through Tattenham Corner to the Queen’s Stand, with the raising of her Standard above the Queen’s Stand and the accompaniment of the Royal Corps of Signal band playing the National Anthem, has become a familiar sight to racegoers at Epsom Downs and one we are excited to see return in 2021. T: 01372 726 311 E: epsom@thejockeyclub.co.uk W: thejockeyclub.co.uk/epsom

Her Majesty’s arrival, 2017

Jockeys wearing the famous regal colours of purple, scarlet and gold braid have been successful in all of the British Classics, some multiple times, with just one exception: the Investec Derby. Although Willie Carson helped to win her the 1977 Investec Oaks on Dunfermline, Derby success as an owner still eludes her. However, at the age of 90, Her Majesty achieved a Derby first in 2016, when she finally got her hands on the trophy. While not the result of sporting victory; marking her 90th birthday, Her Majesty was invited to present the trophy to the winner. In a hotly contested race, the Aga Khan-owned and Dermot Weld-trained Harzand galloped to victory by a length and a half under Pat Smullen, winning the team both the Investec Derby crown and the honour of meeting the Queen. Epsom Downs Racecourse is already looking forward to the return of Her Majesty, along with the public, and they in turn hope to see her again both in 2021, and for many more years to come. Enharmonic and Frankie Dettori meet The Queen after winning the Diomed Stakes in 1993

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY SAFE VOYAGE lost little in defeat when going down by a neck to the 2019 winner of this, Space Blues, at Haydock on his reappearance and that should set him up nicely for a tilt at this prize. John Quinn's consistent seven-year-old is a specialist at this distance and any rain would strengthen his case. Oh This Is Us has placed in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes (that is normally on this card) in both 2017 and 2019 and is respected, while Shine So Bright can leave his Diamond Jubilee disappointment in the past back up at 7f. Jack's Point has done well since the restart and could surprise now he's returned to his optimum trip.

HEAR RACHEL FROM SHEFFIELD’S STORY

DID YOU KNOW?

The Derby course over 12 furlongs and 10 yards at Epsom Downs is in the rough shape of a horseshoe. From the start, 360 feet above sea level, there is a slight right-handed bend and a rise of 134 feet sweeping left until the top of the hill. A left-hand descent of 34 feet around Tattenham Corner leads into the cambered straight where there is a 50 feet drop until half a furlong out where the ground level rises by 10 feet.

DID YOU KNOW? The Investec Oaks was first run in 1779 when won by the Lord Derby-owned Bridget. The fillies’ Classic is a year older than the Investec Derby and takes its name from the Surrey mansion whose lease was passed on to Lord Derby by his uncle Johnny Burgoyne.

DID YOU KNOW? Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has enjoyed two victories in the Investec Oaks, courtesy of Carrozza in 1957 and Dunfermline in 1977.

50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

NIJINSKY

Derby Day, 1970. Anticipation filled the air and in Nijinsky, an unbeaten winner of the season’s first Classic - the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the racing public had a star to get excited about. Highly impressive in winning the Guineas, Nijinsky went to post at Epsom an 11/8 favourite for the great trainer, Vincent O’Brien, but stamina doubts existed, as did some strong opposition from across the channel in the shape of Gyr, a highly-touted contender. However, unknown to almost all but trainer O’Brien, it was later revealed that the biggest opposition the son of Northern Dancer had had to face was from an attack of colic before the race. An anxious glut of phonecalls to English and Irish vets ensued, but as symptoms began to fade, so did the worry.

T: 01372 726 311 E: epsom@thejockeyclub.co.uk W: thejockeyclub.co.uk/epsom

Come the day, all was well - Nijinsky broke and travelled nicely, with the extra half-mile proving no problem at all as he came with a relentless surge under his rider, Lester Piggott, approaching the final furlong and quickly took two and a half lengths out of the French raider Gyr, galloping on powerfully to the line for a brilliant Derby success in a very fast time. Nijinsky is still rated as one of the greatest Derby winners of all-time and despite Piggott’s typical understated description of the performance; “A grand rise. A grand horse,” when it came to both the legendary trainer and jockey being asked who were their greatest horses of all-time, Nijinsky certainly made each shortlist. The English Triple Crown demands victories at a mile, a mile and a half and one mile six furlongs, in May, June and September, in the 2000 Guineas, The Derby and the St Leger. Nijinsky’s versatility and ability to maintain his form was what made him a rarity with a special place in the history of thoroughbred racing. Nijinsky’s St Leger success later that year cemented his place in the annals as the first horse since 1935 and Bahram to take the Triple Crown - a feat that has not been matched since and may never be matched again. Despite defeats in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Champion Stakes, the colt’s legacy was not dulled - he sired many big-race winners before his death in Kentucky in 1992 and if you ask people about Derby winners, most will remember the name Nijinsky.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Ironclad is lightly raced and worth a market check on his seasonal return, as is Caradoc, though with the benefit of a recent run to his name, easy Newmarket winner DESERT ICON rates the one to beat. William Haggas' four-year-old is potentially ahead of the handicapper now turned out under a penalty and is taken to register a swift double. Tinandali shaped encouragingly on his first start for David O'Meara and also makes plenty of appeal.

THE ROAD TO

THE INVESTEC OAKS

LOVE The QIPCO 1000 Guineas Newmarket Sunday 7th June

GOLD WAND The MansionBet Maiden Fillies’ Stakes Newbury Thursday 11th June

An impressive winner of the first fillies’ Classic of the season, Love looks like a rock-solid favourite for the Investec Oaks. This half-sister to Flattering and Peach Tree bolted up over a mile at Newmarket, defeating Cloak Of Spirits and Quadrilateral, and while this daughter of Galileo has never raced over further than a mile, there’s certainly stamina in her pedigree and Aidan O’Brien has definitely helped fillies make this kind of step up before.

Despite the race only being a maiden, the winner, in the shape of the Roger Varian-trained Gold Wand, looks right out of the top drawer. She was beaten a neck on her two-year-old debut by Domino Darling, but came on plenty from two to three, illustrated as she galloped clear of two well-bred John Gosden-trained fillies in Portrush (half-sister to Enable) and Waldfabel. She’s short on experience, but she could be very high on class.

FRANKLY DARLING The Ribblesdale Stakes Royal Ascot Tuesday 16th June

ENNISTYMON The Ribblesdale Stakes Royal Ascot Tuesday 16th June

With this year’s Ribblesdale Stakes acting as an Oaks Trial of sorts, there was an extremely impressive victory recorded by Frankly Darling, who streaked clear in the colours of Anthony Oppenheimer. The John Gosden-trained filly defied inexperience to back up the impression of her five-length maiden win at Newcastle and could well become the trainer’s fourth Investec Oaks winner in seven years.

Another Aidan O’Brien-trained contender who holds significant claims here despite finishing second to Frankly Darling at Royal Ascot. She was beaten a length and a half despite having to wheel around the whole field from the back and she showed that she’s certainly got the stamina and class to play a hand in the Investec Oaks. Being trained by Aidan O’Brien and as a daughter of Galileo, she certainly fits the profile.

THE HISTORY OF

THE INVESTEC OAKS The Oaks Stakes was first conceived at the May Meeting at Epsom Downs in 1778. The 12th Earl of Derby, who often acted as a Steward at the meeting, invited a party of friends to his house ‘The Oaks’, near Epsom. Since the race programme at the time consisted of races run in heats of two or four miles, it was proposed that a single race over one and a half miles for three-year-old fillies (carrying 8st 4lb) would add some spice to the meeting the following year. The inaugural running of the race was on Friday, 14 May, 1779 and was won by the Lord Derby-owned Bridget. In 1801, Eleanor became the first horse to win the Derby and triumph in the Oaks the very next day. The filly’s trainer, Mr Cox, died shortly before the Derby and his last words were recorded as “Depend on it, that Eleanor is a hell of a mare.” La Fleche took her place in the 1892 Oaks field seeking compensation for defeat in the Derby three days previously. Already successful in that season’s 1000 Guineas, Baron de Hirsch’s St Simon filly was the victim of a deplorable ride from her apparently insane jockey, George Barrett, and was beaten less than a length. She duly won the Oaks and secured the fillies’ Triple Crown with victory in the St Leger. T: 01372 726 311 E: epsom@thejockeyclub.co.uk W: thejockeyclub.co.uk/epsom

Pretty Polly won all nine of her starts as a two-year-old and started the 1904 campaign with victory in the 1000 Guineas, before going on to triumph in both the Oaks - when the shortest-priced scorer at 8/100 - and the St Leger for the fillies’ Triple Crown. One of the greatest-ever fillies, Pretty Polly triumphed in 22 of her 24 starts and has had a lasting impact on the breed as a broodmare. Signorinetta became the third filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double in 1908, belying a starting price of 100/1 against the colts, while Fifinella was the last filly to manage the Classic double in 1916, when both races were held at Newmarket due to the First World War. Carrozza became the initial Classic winner for Her Majesty the Queen when successful in 1957, while winning jockey Lester Piggott returned to partner 1000 Guineas scorer Petite Etoile to victory two years later, a filly he would later describe as the best he ever rode. The Queen enjoyed a second Oaks success in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, when Dunfermline triumphed before going on to win the St Leger. Oh So Sharp gave Sheikh Mohammed his initial Classic victory in the 1000 Guineas before going on to an emphatic six-length win in the Oaks in 1985. The outstanding filly completed the fillies’ Triple Crown when scoring in the St Leger and is the latest three-year-old to achieve the feat.

There was controversy in the 1989 Oaks when first-past-the-post Aliysa subsequently became the first British Classic winner to be disqualified following a positive dope test, with Snow Bride eventually promoted to first place. Aliysa’s owner, H. H. Aga Khan, subsequently withdrew from British racing for five years in protest at the amended result, against which he mounted a strong challenge.

The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Taghrooda led the field home in the 2014 Investec Oaks, that year run in memory of the late, great Sir Henry Cecil. She cemented her place in the history books with a superb display in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month, becoming the first filly since 1976 to complete the Oaks-King George double in the same season.

Salsabil enjoyed a fantastic Classic campaign in 1990, winning the 1000 Guineas before turning the Oaks into a procession with a five-length victory. The John Dunlop-trained filly then beat the colts with a fine turn of foot in the Irish Derby.

That feat was repeated by 2017’s winner Enable, who subsequently went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in two consecutive years and took victory at the Breeders’ Cup as well. She takes her place, deservedly, alongside some of the very best to win this historic contest.

Kazzia, owned by Godolphin, became the latest filly to complete the 1000 Guineas-Oaks double when prevailing by half a length in 2002. The globe-trotting filly, Ouija Board, carried Lord Derby’s colours to a seven-length victory in the 2004 Oaks. The Earls of Derby have won the Classic on seven occasions. There were emotional scenes in the Winner’s Enclosure in 2007 when Light Shift gave Sir Henry Cecil a fantastic eighth victory in the Oaks and his first since Love Divine in 2000. The late Newmarket trainer’s other Oaks winners came through Oh So Sharp (1985), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Lady Carla (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997) and Ramruma (1999).

In 2016, Minding became Aidan O’Brien’s sixth Oaks winner, and twenty years after he saddled his first with Shahtoush in 1998, Together Forever made it a magnificent seven. His other successes came courtesy of Imagine in 2001, Alexandrova in 2006, Was in 2012 and 2015’s winner, Qualify. After the John Gosden-trained Anapurna took last year’s renewal, holding off O’Brien’s Pink Dogwood, we move on to the 2020 renewal of this famous race - with plenty of high-class fillies in this year’s field, we’re sure to see another pulsating race, but only one can add her name to this already illustrious Roll of Honour.

RACE FACTS

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

ANAPURNA

Ridden by Frankie Dettori Owned by Helena Springfield Ltd Trained by John Gosden

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Love was a very impressive winner of the 1000 Guineas last month and she has to be given the utmost respect once again. That said, the form was slightly let down by the placed horses at Royal Ascot and, while she is a likely stayer, she does have to prove herself over this trip. With that in mind, preference is for FRANKLY DARLING, who won the Ribblesdale impressively a couple of weeks ago. She will have to settle better than she did in the early stages of that contest, but she is still lightly raced and may have more to offer. Ennistymon has a similar profile to the selection, although she was beaten by Frankly Darling at Ascot, and it would be no surprise to see her in the mix at the finish.

FIFTH RACE

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Cloak Of Spirits sets the standard on her runner-up effort in the 1000 Guineas and the ground was probably soft enough for her when a shade disappointing in the Coronation Stakes last time. She's certainly not written off just yet, while Love And Thunder made an impressive stable debut for John Gosden at Newbury and looks a filly to follow. However, FOORAAT was mightily impressive scoring by seven lengths at Chelmsford last month and this potentially top-class Roger Varian inmate could take all the beating.

Tagalie was a rare grey Derby winner. Only four of that hue have prevailed, the others being Gustavus (1821), Mahmoud (1936) and Airborne (1946). The latest grey to come close to victory was Silver Patriarch, a short-head runner-up to Benny The Dip in 1997, while Terimon was second in 1989.

Workforce recorded the fastest winning time in the Derby in 2010. His 2 minutes 31.33 seconds was just under a second faster than the previous Derby record of 2 minutes 32.31 seconds set by Lammtarra in 1995. The 2001 winner Galileo is the third fastest Derby winner, coming home in 2 minutes 33.27 seconds.

THE ROAD TO

THE INVESTEC DERBY

ENGLISH KING The Betsafe Derby Trial Stakes Lingfield Park Friday 5th June

KAMEKO The QIPCO 2000 Guineas Newmarket Saturday 6th June

Despite having just a Newcastle maiden win to his name at two, English King put in a stunning performance in Lingfield’s Derby Trial, the same race Anthony Van Dyck won before winning the Derby, to catapult him to ante-post favouritism. The Ed Walkertrained colt is the son of Camelot, the 2012 winner of this race, so perhaps a victory in the Derby is in his blood.

The winner of 2020’s first Classic, Kameko defeated a high-class field, including Pinatubo and Wichita, in great style in the 2000 Guineas and gives Qatar Racing, Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy a live chance in this year’s Investec Derby. While ten furlongs is likely to be this colt’s trip going forward, he may well stay 1m4f and he’ll be a real threat to all if he does.

PYLEDRIVER The King Edward VII Stakes Royal Ascot Tuesday 16th June

RUSSIAN EMPEROR The Hampton Court Stakes Royal Ascot Wednesday, June 17th

With Royal Ascot staged before the Investec Derby in what is an extraordinary year, the King Edward VII Stakes became, in effect, an Investec Derby trial and there was a poweful winner in the shape of Pyledriver, who stretched two lengths clear of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Arthur’s Kingdom. He will be William Muir’s first runner in the Derby and would be a fairytale winner for his Owner/ Breeders, Knox & Wells Limited and R Develin.

Another Royal Ascot ‘trial’, this time run over a mile and a quarter, the Hampton Court Stakes saw some smart participants from both sides of the Irish Sea take part. It was no surprise, therefore, to see the Aidan O’Brientrained colt, Russain Emperor, swoop round the outside and stay on strongly to defeat First Receiver. The son of Galileo is almost certain to stay an extra two furlongs on that evidence and will certainly be a big player.

THE HISTORY OF

THE INVESTEC DERBY Today’s 241st running of the Derby is not only one of the most significant events in the racing calendar, but it is also one which is full of history and remarkable stories. The race was named after the 12th Earl of Derby and the first horse to win it was Diomed on the 4th May 1780. Lord Derby claimed his only triumph of his race just seven years later courtesy of a horse called Sir Peter Teazle.

further down the field that shocked eye witnesses when a militant women’s rights campaigner, Emily Davison, lost her life after stepping onto the course and colliding with Anmer at Tattenham Corner. The last century has provided some memorable horses, one of these was the last Triple Crown winner Nijinsky in 1970 who was rated 138 by Timeform, the second-highest for a winner of The Derby up to that time.

The Derby has been run at Epsom Downs every year except during both World Wars when the race was run at Newmarket, known to many as the ‘New Derby’. Two notable horses that won this prestigious race during those years were Gainsborough and Dante. The former won the Triple Crown - the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger in 1918 - whilst Dante, who was trained in Middleham by Matthew Peacock, won eight of his 9 starts, and the Dante Stakes at York, a key trial for the race, is named in his honour. One of the most extraordinary events of the famous race was in 1913 when it featured a disqualified favourite and a 100/1 winner in Aboyeur who scored by a neck. However, it was what happened T: 01372 726 311 E: epsom@thejockeyclub.co.uk W: thejockeyclub.co.uk/epsom

NIJINSKY AND LESTER PIGGOTT

Lester Piggott was on board that day and he still remains the leading Derby jockey, winning it nine times. The largest winning distance was set by Shergar in 1981 when winning by ten lengths, before he was stolen from Ballymany Stud in Ireland and was never found. Investec Bank became sponsors of the Derby in 2009, the year that Sea The Stars landed the spoils and became the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to land the Guineas/Derby double.

SEA THE STARS

The powerful Coolmore operation dominated the race between 2011 and 2014 - Aidan O’Brien saddling three of those four champions in the shape of Camelot, Ruler Of The World and Australia.

The brilliant Golden Horn broke their dominance in 2015 before going on to win the Eclipse at Sandown Park, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Harzand’s triumph in 2016 made it five Derby champions in the colours of H. H. The Aga Khan since Shergar’s 1981 victory, but Coolmore were back in the winner’s enclosure in 2017 as Wings Of Eagles led home a 1-2 for trainer Aidan O’Brien, with his Cliffs Of Moher in second and the superb son of Frankel, Cracksman, trained by John Gosden, close up in third. Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin finally broke their Investec Derby duck in 2018 as Masar stormed to victory for trainer Charlie Appleby’s first Derby triumph, but Coolmore were back in charge last season as Anthony Van Dyck (above) came out on top of a blanket finish between his three stablemates; Japan, Broome and Sir Dragonet, as well as second-placed horse, Madhmoon. That gave Aidan O’Brien a recordequalling seven victories in the Investec Derby and with another strong hand, he could well become the winningmost trainer in Derby history this afternoon.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

ANTHONY VAN DYCK

Ridden by Seamie Heffernan Owned by Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith Trained by Aidan O'Brien

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Kameko is the one to beat on the back of his 2000 Guineas victory last month and if he sees out the trip then he should take plenty of stopping. That said, the extra half a mile today is a big concern and his pedigree does not offer much encouragement. With that in mind, the vote goes to ENGLISH KING, who barely had to come off the bridle to win the Derby Trial at Lingfield last month. The second from that contest only found subsequent Irish Derby winner Santiago too good in the Queen's Vase and this lightly-raced son of Camelot remains open to improvement. Mogul was disappointing in the King Edward VII but it would be no surprise to see him take a big step forward today, just like his full-brother Japan did when narrowly beaten in this race last year. Russian Emperor and Vatican City are others with valid form claims.

DANGER: KAMEKO

LONGEST TRAVELLER: MUNTADAB trained by Roger Fell, Nawton, 266 miles.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

CORAZON ESPINADO Ridden by Tom Marquand Owned by Robert Moss Trained by Simon Dow

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Corazon Espinado took this from Hateya (second) and Alemaratalyoum (fourth) in a bunched finish 12 months ago and it would be no surprise to see all three finish thereabouts again following some useful appearances since the restart. However, preference is for MUNTADAB, who was denied by just a nose at Musselburgh earlier this week. Roger Fell has his string in good order at present and this 7f specialist can take advantage of his very lenient mark. Tintoretto appears the pick of Tom Ward's pair and the hat-trick seeker is another to note in the hands of Oisin Murphy.

WIN: MUNTADAB
