BANK HOLIDAY FAMILY FUN DAY MONDAY 30 AUGUST 2021 Official Racecard £3.00
EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU
A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for our Bank Holiday Family Fun Day, featuring seven exciting races and a whole host of fun activities for younger guests. The highlight of the action on track is the Amateurs' Derby Handicap at 3.45pm. Staged over the exact same course and distance as the World famous race, The Cazoo Derby, this race gives gentleman amateur jockeys the opportunity to experience the challenge and thrill of competing on this famous stretch of turf. We are grateful to this afternoon's race sponsors the European Breeders Fund and the Cooper family, who celebrate Deborah's 40th birthday with our sixth race. With a maiden and six handicaps on the card, there are plenty of intriguing races for you to enjoy through the afternoon. A visit to the Parade Ring to see the horses up close is always recommended and it can provide clues as to which horses could perform well. But it is not just the horses who will be taking to the course today. At 1pm some plucky characters will line up for our ever-popular Mascot Race and there are no fewer than three children's races for different ages, at 2.10pm, 2.45pm and 3.20pm. Further details on how to register for the children's races can be found later in this racecard. The entertainment does not stop there, as we have a bungee trampoline, face painters, a climbing wall, crocodile encounters, a Wild West adventure, football darts, pony rides and much more for you to enjoy, all for free, during your visit. If your children have come in fancy dress, then look out for our fancy dress competition scouts around the venue, as they could be in with a chance of winning a prize from The Ashley Centre. We would ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard, which explains what we can all do to look after each other whilst on course, in line with the current Government guidance. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and I hope that you have a wonderful time with us here at Epsom Downs. SIMON DURRANT General Manager Epsom Downs Racecourse

SIR DAVID PROSSER TROPHY
TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER
The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2021 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Wins at all racecourses across the country count towards the trophy and Simon Dow leads the way with 18 winners so far. Jim Boyle is his closest challenger with 15 winners and Michael Attwater lies in third place with 14 winners. Standings as of 25th August 2021. Trainer

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2021 runs from 5th November 2020 to 4th November 2021. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. MASCOT MEMORIAL RACE This mascot race has been organised to honour the memories of Geoff & Jenny Smith & Denys Hutson. Between them they organised mascot races, at race tracks across the country. Thanks to them many mascots have made lifelong friendships, and they are dearly missed by every mascot. Between them they raised thousands & thousands of money for charities mainly for The Children’s Trust Tadworth. So it is an honour to remember them whilst raising money & awareness for the Children’s Trust today, the only way mascots know how, by causing mascot mayhem!
Prizes are provided by Ashley Centre.

STANLEY WOOTTON 1895-1986
Australian-born Stanley Wootton arrived in Epsom as a boy in 1906 with his racehorse trainer father Richard and the rest of his family. He first took out a training licence in Epsom in 1915 before serving in the Battle of the Somme, earning the Military Cross. His entire training career took place in Epsom, finally retiring in 1962. Not only did he train numerous big race winners on the flat and over jumps, he was also renowned as a great mentor of apprentice jockeys, including Charlie Smirke and Frenchie Nicholson. In 1926 Wootton purchased the Six Mile Hill gallops on Walton Downs from the Epsom Grand Stand Association for £35,000, and at the same time took a lease on the Winter/Epsom Downs gallops in the centre of the racecourse. In 1967 Wootton gave the gallops at Epsom to the Horserace Betting Levy Board on a 999 year lease, thus helping to secure the long term future of the training industry at Epsom.

FEATURING THE SEPTEMBER STAKES AFTER PARTY HOSTED BY MARTIN KEMP SATURDAY 4 SEPTEMBER TICKETS FROM £20
DO N C H U RSTO N Don Churston was simply one of Epsom’s greatest and most popular owners of all time. He had many horses in training here over a 40 year plus ownership career and he absolutely loved his racing. His colours frequented racecourses all over England and beyond, where he was always well known and greeted warmly. He was also very adventurous and went racing round the World and whenever he could. Initially his forays were with Horse Racing Abroad where he met many lifetime friends with a similar enthusiasm for this wonderful Sport. On other occasions he would venture off on his own exploring unusual countries eventually finding a racetrack somewhere and returning with various racecards as souvenirs! Don loved to have fun and he often hosted among other things, pre race lunches which guests would look forward to with great anticipation before Glorious Goodwood, Deauville in August, Arc day at Longchamp and of course the most famous horse race in the World, the Epsom Derby at his home track to name just a few! Don was a founder member and ultimately Chairman of the Epsom Racing Staff Welfare ( formerly the Epsom Training and Development Fund), which now comes under the banner of Racing Welfare. With Don’s significant business instinct the Charity grew considerably, now owning two houses in Tattenham Corner providing accommodation for Epsom stable staff. He also Chaired committees which organised the Annual Trainers Ball and the Open days through their infancy, both events which have become dates in the diary for the local horseracing community and supporters. It is impossible to do justice to this man and the full life he lived in just a few words but suffice to say Don was a kind and considerate family man whose sense of humour and support will be much missed in the coming years by so many of us. It is entirely appropriate and he would be delighted to know that a commemorative race is being run in his name and he will undoubtedly be having a bet if he can! Simon Dow Epsom Trainer

PLAY SMARTER
POET’S MAGIC is going from strength to strength this term and a 7lb rise for her latest victory at Carlisle might not prove enough to thwart her such was the authority of that success. Flame of Freedom rates much the chief threat given she can race off a 1lb lower mark than when a good recent fourth at Lingfield, with The Cruising Lord appealing as the pick of the remainder.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
