13th September 2020

Alan passed away on 13th September 2020. Alan was a person who accomplished much in his life. He helped his brothers build the then Jefferson Smurfit Group to be a world leader in Paper and Packaging and ultimately spearheaded the Group’s move into Latin America. This organisation continues to be a highly successful part of the Smurfit Kappa Group today. Upon retirement, Alan put his talents into playing poker, eventually winning a World Championship Bracelet He was renowned for his decency and kindness to people.

He is dearly missed by his wife Guadeloupe and his children Peter, Alan and Ann. His passing has also left a void in the lives of his brothers Michael and Dermot and sister Barbara.

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the first day of the Curragh’s Autumn Festival of Racing a new addition to the season here at the Curragh. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope that you have a good day.

We are very grateful to today’s race sponsors the Irish European Breeders Fund, Goffs, The Smurfit Family, William Hill, Barberstown Castle and Tipperary Crystal for their support of today’s programme.

We are particularly pleased to see the revival of the Goffs Million and to be hosting Europe’s most valuable two-year-old race here today. The Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes has a most illustrious roll of honour and is a regular source of Classic and Group 1 winners.

We have made changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. We are also delighted to partner with Into Kildare with the staging of Taste of Kildare which is a great addition to the weekend showcasing the fantastic variety of food produced in County Kildare.

I would also like to welcome the many owners and breeders that are here today we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for your support.

HOW TO READ RACECARD 13 5 4 6 7

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

HISPANIC caught the eye when finishing third on his debut over 6f at Naas recently and the son of No Nay Never could be hard to stop with the benefit of that experience. That said, Ardad’s Great is an obvious threat to the selection based on her narrow defeat in a Listed event two starts ago. New Image bumped into a useful rival on his debut here in June and he should not be underestimated, while Small Oasis and Paddington complete the shortlist.

THESMURFITFAMILY ANDTHECURRAGH

The Smurfit Family have enjoyed a successful association with The Curragh for many years, and in particular one of racing’s finest ever stayers.

Known for his fine association with Dermot Weld, Dr Michael Smurfit enjoyed many successes on the racetrack, both on the flat and in the National Hunt sphere. At the Curragh in particular, the Gladness Stakes of 1988 marked the start of an era, with Mick Kinane guiding Careafolie to victory in the seven furlong Group 3 for Dermot Weld.

Two of Dr Smurfit’s horses clashed in the 1991 Macdonagh Boland Stakes, a Listed race over seven furlongs, with the Jim Bolger-trained Ballyloop under Christy Roche getting the better of Pre-Eminent in the same colours for Dermot Weld and Mick Kinane.

A few years later, Vintage Crop emerged. A victory in Newmarket’s Cesare witchunder rider Walter Swinburn marked him as a stayer to follow, and he improved to win the 1993 Curragh Cup under Mick Kinane.

A short break followed, before he made a promising return over a mile and a quarter and took a step forward to land the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger in 1993, beating Richard Hannon’s Assessor and Foresee back in second and third.

A historic and ground breaking victory in the Melbourne Cup followed, before he returned to the Curragh for victory in a conditions race to prepare the talented stayer for a repeat victory in the feature St Leger. The victory did indeed follow under Mick Kinane, winning by a widening margin of three lengths to see off John Oxx’s Rayseka and Johnny Murtagh.

The Smurfit silks were also carried to victory by talented mare Cheviot Amble, trained by Patrick Flynn.

The tough mare was a multiple Listed winner, landing the Mooresbridge Stakes in heavy conditions in 1994 under John Egan.

Humbel too was a smart horse for Dermot Weld, winning the 1995 Blandford Stakes (then a Group 2 over 11f and open to colts), and although Media Puzzle only won once at the Curragh, he too was a smart stayer in the hands of Dermot Weld, winning the 2002 Melbourne Cup under Damien Oliver.

The family’s association with The Curagh has successfully continued through Tony Smurfit who currently has horses in training with Curragh based Johnny Murtagh.

MEMORIALBERESFORDSTAKES

This race has always been a good marker for success. Since Sadler’s Wells took the 1983 renewal, we’ve seen thoroughbred giants win this on their way to big success. El Prado was victorious for Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott in 1981, before the Aidan O’Brien domination began with Johan Cruyff in 1996.

In recent times, we’ve seen stars of the track come out in force for this race. Azamour took the 2003 renewal for John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh, with the superb Sea The Stars and St Nicholas Abbey winning back to back renewals in 2008 and 2009 respectively. In what was truly a golden age of racing, Casamento added to the already illustrious roll of honour and cemented his place in history. The domination of Aidan O’Brien since then is yet to be stopped. His representatives have took the each and every renewal of this race since 2010 and he bids to make it an astonishing 12 wins in a row here today.

Recent successes for Ballydoyle have come in the Derrick Smith colours, with the talented grey, and future English St Leger winner, Capri landing the race in 2016.

Subsequent English 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior took the race in fine style a year later, before the talented Japan capped three consecutive wins in the race last year for Ryan Moore, before Donnacha O’Brien ended his streak in 2019 when in the saddle of Innisfree.

20
LEGENDARYWINNER SADLER’SWELLS 1983WINNER

2020 saw the Aidan O’Brien domination continue, as he recorded his tenth success in a row in this contest with High Definition. Seamie Heffernan gave him a peach of a ride on the day and Last year saw the same partnership land the spoils with the odds-on favourite Luxembourg.

A highly talented juvenile, this colt was supremely impressive. He was ridden with plenty of confidence and the turn of foot proved to be devastating for his rivals as he flew past the post with nearly five lengths in hand.

The subsequent Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes winner went 3-3 as a juvenile and looked almighty impressive again, putting a good field to the sword in the Irish Champions Stakes two weeks ago.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A case can be made for several in this field, but LAKOTA SEVEN returns to the trip he shed his maiden tag over and he could bounce back to winning form. He was short of room on his most recent outing and only managed to run on for fourth due to that, but further improvement may be just around the corner. Adelaide River seems a big threat, along with Roaring Gallagher, who recorded a good win on his debut.

CURRAGH COMMENT

As is par for the course with these big-field maiden contests, they can be a fiendishly difficult puzzle to solve, with plenty of connections arriving here confident of success. KARAKOUL is the one that makes most appeal after a good second on his latest outing over 7f at Galway. Dropped back to 6f today, Johnny Murtagh’s charge is likely to be bang in the mix after weakening close home last time. Life In Colour is another who will prefer this drop in trip and she warrants respect, while Redbud may also take a step forward. 16th July 15th Sept 11th Aug 2013 11th June July Sept May 15th Sept 19th Aug 13th Oct 27th June 4th Sept 10th Oct 27th June 1992 15th Aug 28th June 21st May 1988 28th June 1992 14th Sept 2003

CURRAGH COMMENT

DISTILLATE needs to prove that this afternoon’s drop in distance is the right move, but the form of her latest second at Down Royal stands out in this contest with question marks surrounding the majority of her rivals. Mile End could prove the chief threat to the selection with blinkers now applied, while Summer Snow is another to consider stepping back up in trip.

WIN: DISTILLATE

DANGER: Mile End

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Curraheen Princess has been in great form of late and it is hard to gauge where her ceiling might lie, but preference is for DREAM TODAY after he bounced back to form at Laytown last time. Adrian McGuinness’ seven-year-old was a comfortable winner that day over 7f and he shouldn’t be too inconvenienced by this shorter trip, so he looks the one to side with again. Chocquinto will find this much easier than recent assignments and she is noted too.

WIN: DREAM TODAY

DANGER: Curraheen Princess

The Joe McGrath Premier Handicap pays tribute to one of the leading figures in Irish racing who died in 1966. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and business and can also take a huge amount of credit for the success of the Irish racing industry today. He enjoyed plenty of racing success most notably with Arctic Prince who won the Epsom Derby in 1951.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Dazzling Spirit recorded a comfortable win on her most recent outing at Clonmel earlier this month, but she is now rated 8lb higher for that win and loses Jamie Powell’s 7lb claim. Therefore, it is easier to side with DERRY LAD, who was a beaten favourite at Epsom recently and can bounce back down in trip. Susies Sapphire and Star Of Cashel are others to consider.

CURRAGH COMMENT

In a wide-open contest the marginal preference is for MARY SALOME, who accounted for a few of her rivals when scoring at Listowel on Tuesday. A 7lb rise will make her life tougher but the six-year-old is progressive and may have more to offer. Adelaise is unexposed and has to be of some interest on her debut for Joseph O’Brien, while Dunum is another with strong form claims. Others to note are San Aer, Heavenly Power and Cosmic Vega.
