T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA
Today’s feature race is the £25,000 British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes at 3.52pm There are seven ’ runners set to contest this race, including a trio of course and distance winners. Of this trio, Grant Tuer’s rs trio Mehmas filly BELLARCHI looks to have every chance. The four-year-old was a strong second at Thirsk last ly BELLARCHI four-year-ol month and while her latest effort on the AW at Southwell was below par, usual jockey Oliver Stammers h will be back in the saddle for this one and a bold bid is expected. Jim Goldie’s JANNAS JOURNEY l t scored over this course and distance in September before adding a second win a week later at Ayr. She y loves this track and will be up for it again here. Stablemate hasn’t won since, but this Sioux Nation filly w e but is another with prior success here ROCK MELODY has been out of form of late her pr

RACE DESCRIPTIONS
2.22 THE 100% RACINGTV PROFITS BACK TO RACING SELLING STAKES
2.52 THE EMERALD CLUB HANDICAP STAKES
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75
3.22 THE
CATHERINE
& CHARLOTTE ROCHE HANDICAP STAKES
3.52 THE BRITISH EBF PREMIER FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES
1.52 THE RAY HAWTHORNE MEMORIAL AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STAKES
This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing
To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90
Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
4.22 THE MELISSA, ARABELLA AND ORIANA HAWTHORNE HANDICAP STAKES (DIV I)
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60
Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55
4.55 THE MELISSA, ARABELLA AND ORIANA HAWTHORNE HANDICAP STAKES (DIV II)
Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions
5.30 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES

A competitive handicap CARLTON AND CO ran creditably on soft ground over C&D recently with headgear refitted and remains fairly treated if recapturing her best form. She’s taken to resume winning ways back on a sounder surface, with three-time course winner Without Delay feared most back below her latest winning mark. One Of Our Own has recorded all of her victories over 6f but still makes appeal in this grade

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
