I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the Juddmonte Irish Oaks – one of the highlights of the season here at the Curragh. I hope that you have a good day and find a winner or two.

We look forward to another excellent day’s racing here tomorrow and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh and look forward to welcoming you back here many more times during the rest of the season.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The Anglesey Stakes is run over the Anglesey Course, a unique distance to the Curragh Racecourse of 6 furlongs and 63 yards (1265m) and the oldest race in the Irish calendar to be continuously run over the same distance since it’s inauguration in 1829. The first running was won by Regulator, trained at Maddenstown. The Anglesey course and the Anglesey Stakes are named after Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. As a Field Marshall he was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and he led what was described as a spectacular charge of the British Heavy Cavalry, which checked and in part routed the French Army. One of the last cannon shots fired that day hit Paget in the lower right leg necessitating amputation. In recognition of his heroism he was created Marquess of Anglesey on the 4th of July 1815.
Henry Paget was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in February 1828. In December of that year he wrote a letter to Patrick Curtis, the Catholic Primate of Ireland stating his belief in the need for Catholic emancipation, this opinion led to him being sacked by the British government. In 1830 a new government was formed, and he was reappointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was responsible for introducing state-aided education to 400,000 Irish children. We have no written records about the origins of the Anglesey Stakes, however it can be assumed that the inauguration of the race by the Turf Club in 1829 was in honour of Henry Paget as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Why a distance of 6 furlongs and 63 yards was decided upon is also unknown, however bestowing a starting post title as well as a race title upon the Marquess of Anglesey was an additional honour. Races run over the Anglesey course are described as scurries, a scurry is a unique race description to the Curragh Racecourse. Throughout the Curragh season several prestigious premier handicaps are run over this course, which is a seamless race-heritage going back to 1829 and the inauguration of the Anglesey course and distance. No other racecourse in the world can boast such a unique distance with such a long history.
Many a big name have won this race in the past, with Mick Kinane leading the way. Mick won the race won this race five times, notably with Johannesburg in 2001 and One Cool Cat in 2003. His wins in that period represented a period of dominance for Kinane and Aidan O’Brien, as they won the race for three consecutive years as a partnership, with Ontario filling the gap as the 2002 winner.
Aidan O’Brien was an unstoppable force during this period, winning the race for five consecutive years, with Seamie Heffernan and Kieran Fallon in the saddle in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
A different O’Brien is the leading trainer in the history of this race, the legendary Vincent O’Brien. The first master of Ballydoyle took his first win in 1962 with Philemon, going on to win the race with Nijinsky in 1969, Storm Bird in 1980 and Lake Como in 1987 some of the most remembered winners of the Anglesey.
Ger Lyons and Colin Keane added to the roll of honour in 2021 with the well- supported Beauty Inspire.
Last year saw Aidan O’Brien return to the roll of honour with the very talented Little Big Bear. The speedy juvenile made light work of his six rivals to win readily by four and 1/4 lengths. Aidan now only sits one behind Vincent O’Brien, so today could equal the record with The Caribbean and Pearls and Rubies.
Built in 1990, Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables is the vision of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum.
Following specifications laid down by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the track and grandstand were constructed in 1990.
A further level was added to the grandstand in 1995 to accommodate corporate hospitality guests. There is currently seating for over 2000 people.
The Jebel Ali Racecourse has become known for its ‘Garden Party’ like atmosphere.
Sheikh Ahmed has enjoyed considerable success on the track, racing some of the top names in thoroughbred racing over the last few years.
In 2022 stable star Addeybb was retired following his win in the Prix du Conseil at Longchamp. Having won seven Group races across the world, he retired a true champion with a total of 13 wins.

BIG GOSSEY may be 9lb higher than when he was a close second in this race last year, but he has flourished since and makes strong appeal in his bid to go one place better than 12 months ago. His fourth-placed finish in the Rockingham 20 days ago puts him firmly in the picture and, with the additional yardage not expected to be an issue, he can defy a 2lb rise to score here. However, there are dangers aplenty, with Hurricane Ivor, Verhoyen and Rockingham second Master Matt all live dangers.

Established in 2001, initially as a Listed contest called the Richard H Faught Memorial Stakes, run over the minimum trip of five furlongs, the Sapphire Stakes was renamed and reclassified as a Group 3 in 2008 before being raised to Group 2 level in 2015.
Over the last two decades, there have been many top-class winners of the race, including sprinters who continue to shape the future of the breed. Respected sire Dandy Man was the 2006 winner of this contest, while Slade Power (2013) and Havana Grey (2018) have also embarked on stallion careers since their successes in the Sapphire Stakes.
Only one horse has won this race more than onceBenbaun - and he did it when trained by two different trainers, four years apart. First a winner of the contest in 2005 as a four-year-old in the care of Mark Wallace and ridden by Kieren Fallon on the day, he returned at the grand old age of eight to double up under the late, great, Pat Smullen when trained by Kevin Ryan.
Speaking of veteran champions, the evergreen Caspian Prince blazed to glory in 2017, also at the age of eight, in the quickest time recorded in the race since it was established. The amazing son of Dylan Thomas was retired in 2021 after the flare up of an old injury. He retired a true hero of the sprinting division, winning 23 times from 115 starts.
He was trained by British trainer, Tony Coyle, and it’s clear that horses that make the trip over the Irish Sea to compete must be highly respected - five of the last 10 winners have been trained outside Ireland.
Speaking of which, two trainers have the joint best record in this race, one being Roger Charlton, who saddled Deportivo to victory in 2003 and Definightly in 2012, and the other being Mick Halford with his two wins in the Sapphire Stakes coming courtesy of the 2007 winner, Snaefell and the 2011 winner Invincible Ash.
Johnny Murtagh is the most successful jockey in the race with three wins to his name. He rode the winners in the 2003 and 2012 for Roger Charlton and the other for Mick Halford when getting the leg up on Snaefell.
The 2020 renewal of the race went the way of the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained A’Ali and continued the good record that three-year-olds hold in this race, while Mooneista gave trainer Jack Davison the biggest success of his career when landing the race in 2021.
Last year, the first to be sponsored by Barberstown Castle, saw the prize stay in Ireland. Ladies Church became the third three-year-old in a row to win and was ridden by Ben Coen. Local trainer Johnny Murtagh has done a great job with the daughter of Churchill. She got a nice toe into the race before showing a a gutsy attitude to win by a short head.

The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse.
The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.
The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

Juddmonte is the international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding enterprise founded in 1980 by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. Under Prince Khalid’s vision and direction, Juddmonte has, for over 40 years, consistently produced top-class homebred thoroughbred horses competing at the highest level on racecourses across the world. They have bred over 100 individual Group/Grade 1 winners of over 200 Group/Grade 1 races, with their horses racing in Prince Khalid’s famous pink, green and white colours.
The event was established in 1895, and it was originally contested over a mile. It was extended to its present length in 1915.
The field usually includes fillies which ran previously in the Epsom Oaks, and several have won both races. The first was Masaka in 1948, and the most recent was Snowfall in 2021.
The first filly to win both the Epsom Oaks and the Irish Oaks was Masaka in 1948, a very talented but temperamental horse owned by The Aga Khan. Since then, a whole host of horses have done the illustrious double. Fair Salinia (1978), Blue Wind (1981) and Unite (1987) all won on both sides of the Irish Sea.
Ouja Board claimed victory in both in 2004. While more recently Enable came over to romp home for the Gosden’s The late Snowfall was the last to do it in 2021.
Eight go to post for this year’s Juddmonte Irish Oaks, with Aidan O’Brien looking to have a fine hand. His challenge is spearheaded by the Epsom Oaks second, Savethelastdance. The daughter of Galileo only had the one start as a juvenile, where she was beaten in a maiden at Thurles. Her pedigree suggested she would step forward as a three-year-old but was still relatively unfancied on debut, despite having looked more the finished article.
She made light work of a competitive looking field at Leopardstown on heavy ground. She lowered the colours of her stablemate Boogie Woogie and the re-opposing Azazat. Both were preferred to her in the market and after winning, she was sent straight to Chester for an Epsom Oaks Trial, where she continued her fine form winning eased down.
The Epsom Oaks saw her take on the quickest ground she had faced to date, which didn’t look to impede her too much. She ran a remarkable race and kept battling on in the style of one who had been done for a bit of toe. She very much rates as the one they all have to beat today, but she does face some tough challengers.
SavethelastdancePerhaps her biggest rival comes in the form of Warm Heart. She had a similar juvenile campaign to her stablemate and has taken her form to the next level this season. Her most recent win at Royal Ascot in the Ribblesdale is a very good bit of form and she comfortably beat the re-opposing Lumiere Rock and Bluestocking. She looks to be improving all the time, so it should be a good battle between the Ballydoyle pair.
British raiders have a fair record in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, so it may be foolish to count Bluestocking out completely. Four of the last ten renewals have been won by British trainers, so Ralph Beckett’s filly wouldn’t be without a shout. Despite being beaten twice by Warm Heart, she does lack experience and is well entitled to keep improving.
Aga Khan’s Azazat was well fancied on her debut to beat Savethelastdance but couldn’t find any extra to go with the eventual winner. She got off the mark at the next time of asking at Leopardstown in a maiden but couldn’t continue winning ways when upped to Group Three company. She didn’t get the best of runs behind Rosscarbery and a clearer run could see her go close, for all that she does have a bit to find on ratings.

SAVETHELASTDANCE has shown plenty of ability in her career to date and she holds the most compelling claims in this contest. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old looked a superstar when winning easily in the Cheshire Oaks before running with plenty of credit when second in the Oaks at Epsom last time, therefore she should take the beating. Warm Heart won the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot on her previous outing and is feared most, although she will have to improve again to score here, while Bluestocking completes the shortlist.

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

With forecast softer conditions in her favour, Aidan O’Brien’s filly has strong claims here, but slight preference is for the ground-versatile ROSSCARBERY, who has also fared well at Group 1 level. 10 furlongs wasn’t far enough for her in the Pretty Polly here three weeks ago, but she emerged with plenty of credit in fourth and the recent Munster Oaks winner touched off Emily Dickinson when landing the Group 3 Stanerra Stakes last summer.
