Page 1

Unibet is the first bookmaker to bring you the revolutionary

digital racecard from the Racing Post.

Each Smart View racecard considers up to 8 attributes influencing a horse’s performance including its overall ability and jumping prowess, the trainer and jockey, the course, distance and ground. Expressed as an overall % – the higher the figure, the better the chance.

WELCOME TO

Hello and a very warm welcome to The Christmas Meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Today marks the opening day of The Christmas Meeting here, and with the festive season in full swing, we’re delighted to share an exciting afternoon of top-class Jump racing with you. The atmosphere is sparkling with Christmas cheer, and we’re thrilled to have you with us for what promises to be a memorable day on the track.

Looking at today’s card, we are thrilled to showcase another superb line-up of competitive races, highlighted by the feature race of the day, The Turners Handicap Chase. Last year’s winner King Turgeon returns to defend his crown, facing a formidable challenge from former Festival hero and Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup runner L’Homme Presse, who carries top weight With strong fields throughout the afternoon, today’s action is sure to keep you engrossed from start to finish

We’re also delighted to welcome back the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup Cross Country Handicap Chase, always a special spectacle at Cheltenham. The Centre of the Course will be open to all Club/Tattersalls enclosure ticket holders for viewing. Racegoers wishing to watch from the designated centre-course viewing areas can gain access once the horses are clear after the fifth race at 2.35pm, until approximately 2.50pm when runners go to post for the sixth race. After this time, access will not be possible

Pre-racing entertainment begins in the Parade Ring with the Official Preview Show at 11.30am, offering expert insight into today’s key contenders. We hope you enjoy the music from the Cheltenham Silver Band, whose traditional brass soundtrack is guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit.

We also encourage you to take part in our Christmas Tipping Competition, with the chance to win tickets to future meetings Full details can be found inside the racecard, entries close before Race 2 at 12.40pm, so be sure to get involved!

A huge thank you to our partners for their generous support today: British EBF, Catesby Estates, Unibet, Turners, Glenfarclas and CITIPOST Their contributions help us deliver a truly exceptional raceday experience

We hope you enjoy every moment of today and soak up the festive spirit all around the course. We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow for another fantastic day of The Christmas Meeting.

Have a wonderful day at Cheltenham.

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Tomorrow!

The Christmas Meeting Saturday Celebrate Christmas at the Home of Jump Racing with friends or colleagues, combining the excitement of top-class racing with the spirit of the season Enjoy a full day of celebrations, with festive entertainment across the site and a vibrant atmosphere both on and off the track.

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

An interesting novice hurdle to kick off the card. KINGSTON QUEEN looked a useful prospect when scoring comfortably on her Chepstow hurdling debut last month and while her future probably lies back over further, it’s hard ignore howwell that form is working out, so she looks worth siding with to make it 2 from 2 in this sphere. Old Park Star bettered his bumper form when making a winning start over hurdles with a bit up his sleeve at Kempton and seems sure to improve, as does Lisbane Park.

There was much to like about the way HENRY’S FRIEND stuck to his guns at Ascot where he landed a good prize in pretty decisive fashion in the end. A 3lb rise is hardly the end of the world and while he still needs to prove that he can do it round here (no show both previous visits), his profile is otherwise an appealing one. Last year’s winner King Turgeon is feared on the back of his encouraging run at Aintree, while The Doyen Chief and class angle L’Homme Presse also command respect.

14/07/1947-20/05/2025

Julian followed in his father’s footsteps and supported racing at Cheltenham over a period of some 35 years. He sponsored races year on year under the guise of Chairman of Steel Plate and Sections. He attended most meetings using the large box (4052) overlooking the finishing post.

He was involved in the ownership of many horses, plenty of which ran at Cheltenham, both under his ownership and that of Steel Plate and Sections.

The roar at the start of the first race at Cheltenham Festival held a special place in his heart.

Cheltenham Racecourse held so many happy memories for him.

In latter years he very much enjoyed the Cotswold Club

CRYSTAL CUP

The Crystal Cup European Cross Country Challenge brings together the finest international horses and riders to reward the most successful stable in cross country steeple chasing.

A thrilling 12 race series, with over €850,000 in prize money, hosted by many of Europe’s premier racecourses, over unique combinations of hedges, banks, ditches and timber, concluded at Lion d’Angers at the end of May when Patrice Quinton reclaimed the Crystal Cup from his Czech rival, Josef Vana, a competition that went right down to the final furlong.

Points are awarded from 6 down to 1 for the first six places in any race, doubled if running outside your country of origin to incentivize foreign participation, with bonuses worth €50,000 to the first and second placed owner and trainer.

The leaderboard up to this 7th leg at Cheltenham today has a suitably international feel:

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
