Introducing...‘Love Our Turf’, anew initiative which seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the Home of Jump Racing and the local community
Tiger Roll, afive-time winner at TheFestival™ and twicesuccessful in the RandoxGrand National, will todaybeinducted intothe Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame museum at the racecourse displays almost100 years of history that hangs from the ceiling in iconic Cheltenham fashion, telling the story of the Home of Jump Racing.
Bred to perform on the flatand originally purchased on behalf of Godolphin, Tiger Roll wononhis only start forWestCountry handler Nigel Hawkebeforebeing sent to the Brightwells Sale at Cheltenham in December 2013, when he waspurchased by agent Mags O’Toole on behalf of Gigginstown House Stud and sent intotraining with Gordon Elliott. Theson of Authorized next appeared at Cheltenham in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at TheFestival™ in 2014, when he wassuccessful at 10-1. In all, Tiger Roll would go on to appear 13 times at Cheltenham, winning on six occasions.
His fiveFestival wins were:
•2014JCB Triumph Hurdle (ridden by Davy Russell)
•2017JTMcNamaraNational Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Chase (ridden by Lisa O’Neill)
•2018, 2019,2021–Glenfarclas CrossCountry Chase (ridden by Keith Donoghue)
Tiger Roll’sother success wasinthe 2014 Masterson Holdings Hurdle at TheShowcase, when he wasridden by Bryan Cooper If the above achievements were not enough, the remarkable Tiger Roll also wonthe world’sgreatestchase –the RandoxGrand National at Aintree –in2018and 2019.This wasthe firsttime ahorse had wonback to back Grand Nationals sinceRed Rum in 1973/1974. It wasafter his run at TheFestival™ earlier this year, when he went down by three-quarters of alength to stable companion Delta Work in the Glenfarclas CrossCountry Chase, thatTiger Roll wasretired at the age of 12.
Paying tributetoTiger Roll, Gigginstown House Stud supremo Michael O’Leary said:
“All of us who were so fortunate to be associatedwith Tiger Roll from Nigel Hawke, to Mags O’Toole, tomybrother Eddie,Gordon Elliott, and his outstanding team at Cullentra, as well as Anita, myself and our children, realise howfortunate and privileged we have been to sharein Tiger Roll’sepic journey.
“He wasa little horse, but wasbrave as alion, and had the heart of a tiger.Itwas aprivilege to return year after year to Cheltenham and Aintree, wherehedistinguished himself with every run. He will be most remembered forhis twoGrand National wins, however his fivevictories at the Cheltenham Festival over different courses and distances was perhaps his greatest achievement, and atestament to his unquenchable spirit, and his love forJump racing.
“Weare all privileged to have playedatinypart in the legend of Tiger Roll.”
