Evening Racing Thursday 5th January 2023 Official Programme £3.00

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for our second meeting of 2023, which features seven races and promises to be an evening of exciting and competitive racing. January has arrived with a bang, bringing lots of wet, windy and miserable weather, so please take advantage of the facilities in the grandstand to keep warm, get something to eat and drink and enjoy the evening.

I wish you the best of luck in finding some winners this evening and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

For more information about any of these events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

A case can be made for most of these and EL HOMBRE gets just a tentative vote given the competitive nature of the race. However, the nine-year-old has held his form since edging out Porfin over this trip at Wolverhampton in October and is an appealing choice to confirm his superiority. Yimou and Astro Jakk are others boasting sound form claims with the former expected to appreciate the return to this track.

SHOW ME A SUNSET very much returned to form when runner-up over C&D on Tuesday and, from a handy draw, he could be worth chancing to back that up and come out on top. COOL LIGHTNING was well supported in each of her previous starts and impressed with her attitude despite coming up short on both occasions. Those experiences will no doubt have taught her plenty and, with another step forward, the Exceed And Excel filly could be hard to beat in this company. Prospering also appears to be going the right way and is feared most, while Flying Kiss is noted on her debut.

He’s yet to race at this course but has handled the Polytrack well enough at Lingfield to be given the benefit of the doubt. Shamshon retains his enthusiasm and is again rated as a player at this level, while Company Minx and Cazeva Princess are closely matched on recent efforts and are also considered.

Weightwatcher: CRACK REGIMENT won off a handicap mark of 82, his rating is now down 8lb to 74. Longest Traveller: BUXTED TOO trained by I Williams, Alvechurch, 148 miles. A fairly open contest in which marginal preference is for STORM CATCHER. He arrives in this having secured a comfortable victory on his latest outing over this course and distance and a 4lb raised mark may not be enough to stop him following up. Bit Harsh is a recent track winner and is expected to mount a serious challenge to the selection, while Mafia Power is another to consider off the same mark as when landing an apprentices’ handicap at Wolverhampton on Tuesday

First-time cheekpieces could see CHAGALL build on a creditable fourth at Lingfield last month and he must have a good chance switching to classified stakes company He has won and finished second on his only two previous course starts and makes a good bit of appeal, while the booking of Luke Morris for Hachert also catches the eye. LAKE SAND finished a good fourth over C&D 51 days ago and Ali Stronge’s charge, who is now 5lb below his last winning mark, makes the most appeal as he bids for a third course success. Laurentia ought to appreciate the return to this venue and she’s on a fair mark if returning to form. Night Traveller has been given a chance by the handicapper and the booking of Hollie Doyle is noteworthy. LAKE SAND Laurentia

LAKE SAND goes well at this track (both career victories gained over C&D) and, on the back of an encouraging reappearance fourth and now operating 5lb below his last winning mark, he could well be ready to strike. Arpina needs to shrug off a lesser effort over C&D 7 weeks ago but is largely consistent so can feature, along with Laurentia. Night Traveller isn’t dismissed totally either.

Hooves Like Jagger is fairly consistent at this level and the five-year-old demands the utmost respect here, but a chance is taken on CIAO ADIOS. The daughter of The Gurkha shaped as if in need of further when running on into second over 1m3f at Kempton last month and this could be the time to catch her.
