The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
With solid form, the Laura Mongan-trained GINTINI gets a narrow vote. The selection’s stamina looked stretched by the 7f at Lingfield 12 days ago and the conditions of this race looks a good opportunity for him to gain a first career success. Ginny Jo may prove the chief threat now returned to the C&D of her best performance, while lightly-raced duo Opportunity Knocks and All Dunn are still open to improvement.

STAR OF EPSOM proved a different proposition on his return to racing when landing a 1m2f handicap at Lingfield in November and he looks capable of completing the double now entering a classified stakes contest. First Snowfall shaped better than the bare form suggest in first-time blinkers at Kempton last month and shouldn’t be underestimated now dropped in trip. Calcutta Dream finished third over today’s C&D when last seen in this sphere and can’t be discounted either

STAR OF EPSOM was a ready winner of a Lingfield handicap when last seen and Pat Phelan’s mare should take the beating again if in the same form here Recent hurdles winner Happy Company is still low mileage on the Flat for John O’Shea so is an interesting player, as is the usually consistent Miss Sligo.
Valkyrian makes her stable debut for the Jamie Osborne yard and is likely to prove competitive on this return to 7f. Preference, however, is for MARINARA, who was last seen running a fine second at Chantilly and looks capable of picking up a race of this nature. The Ivy and Evenstar are entitled to build on their respective first appearances when both finishing third at Southwell last month and they merit consideration in an open-looking contest.

Resilient Power got up late at Wolverhampton last month and seems to have improved for being gelded, so he could go well off 4lb higher in the handicap, but a chance is taken on IMPULSIVE LADY. The daughter of Frankel sports a first-time hood, which may help her last home if she makes the running as she did when fourth at Southwell. Blueflagflyinghigh has been gelded since his last run and is well worth a market check as well.

Siam Fox ran on to score at Wolverhampton four days ago and although he has to carry a 5lb penalty for that victory, his jockey claims 7lb which balances things out. He will need a clear run which isn’t guaranteed, and may struggle to get past ROCKET YOGI, a solid third at Leicester in October and gelded since. Hollie Doyle could get a tune out of him here, with Mawkeb another to consider after a solid second in first-time blinkers.

REECELTIC is somewhat unlucky not to be arriving here on a hat-trick, having been narrowly denied at Lingfield on his most recent outing. Pat Phelan’s charge remains feasibly handicapped and he can gain compensation here at the main expense of the consistent Reset Button, who is winless since this time last year but has run well in defeat the last twice.
