HOW TO BET

Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers

JIM GOLDIE

10%

S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 53 WINS FROM 534 RUNNERS

Jim is once again leading trainer of the year at Ayr and saddled a hat trick of winners here last Tuesday to underline that the stable is still in fantastic form. He is enjoying his best ever season both for winners and prizemoney and with a very strong group of runners this afternoon he should add to the 20 successes he has enjoyed here in 2022. He runs Classy Al in today’s feature race the Virgin Bet Handicap with Hollie Doyle riding.

MICHAEL DODS

9%

S U C C E S S RA T E

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 23 WINS FROM 249 RUNNERS

A trainer who is always worth following at Ayr Michael’s horses are in great form as was proved at the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival last month when he saddled several winners and also had the runners up in both the Gold and Silver Cups. He runs Woven who was second in the Silver Cup in the Virgin Bet Handicap today and the six-year-old should be in the mix again today

MIKE SMITH

S U C C E S S RA T E

12%

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 30 WINS FROM 256 RUNNERS

Mike has a particularly good strike rate at Ayr and as he trains fairly locally at Galston, East Ayrshire he has plenty of runners throughout the year This afternoon he runs two course specialists Royal Regent and Flying Moon in the Virgin Bet Fives Handicap which opens the card at 1.15pm and both should run big races. Of his other runners Golden Valour is of interest in the virginbet.com Handicap.

PAUL MULRENNAN

17%

S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 47 WINS FROM 269 RIDES

Paul is top jockey at Ayr for the 2022 Flat season and has ridden 22 winners here this year His partnership with Jim Goldie has paid huge dividends and they team up in several races this afternoon and will be looking to add to the treble they enjoyed here at our last meeting. Currently lying third in the British Flat Jockeys Championship Paul’s rides today include Cosa Sara in the virginbet.com Handicap.

CONNOR BEASLEY

10%

S U C C E S S RA T E

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 20 WINS FROM 191 RIDES

Connor was the leading jockey at the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival with five wins. The highlight was the impressive Gale Force Maya in the Arran Scottish Sprint Listed contest. Having his best year ever having smashed his 2021 total of 72 winners Connor has several chances this afternoon.

HOLLIE DOYLE

SU CC ES S RA T E

10%

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 2 WINS FROM 19 RIDES

Hollie is an infrequent visitor to Ayr so it is well worth noting her rides when she does venture north. Today she is primarily here to ride Radetsky Marsch for Archie Watson in the Virgin Bet Novice Stakes. She has also picked up a few mounts for Jim Goldie including course specialist Ayr Poet in the virginbet.com Handicap and Classy Al who runs in the Virgin Bet Handicap.

Hilts is best forgiven his latest effort after scoping dirty and had previously looked capable of winning more races off this mark, so warrants consideration. DUNDORY had a lot to do when finishing second at Epsom 11 days ago and the John O’Shea inmate could gain compensation here. Royal Regent ran a good third over C&D last week and rates a player off the same mark, with Cabinet Maker another meriting respect now returning to turf.

JIM Goldie and Paul Mulrennan are the respective Flat Trainer of the Year and Flat Jockey of the year at Ayr Racecourse after a hugely successful 2022 at the track. Jim saddled Abduction, Classy Al and Aighear to win at last Tuesday’s Virgin Bet Raceday to bring his total winners for the year here to 20 He has amassed 96 points in our trainers’ championship- exactly double that of his nearest rival Tim Easterby Paul rode all of Jim’s winners last week and has 93 points with David Allan back in second spot on 38 points. Paul has won 22 times at Ayr this season.

The Owners Championship is a tighter affair with Summerstorm Bloodstock Ltd a point ahead of Mrs Helen Kelly Both have runners today with Cosa Sara representing the former in the virginbet.com Handicap at 2.25pm and Mrs Kelly running Engles Rock in the same race and Eastvan 35 minutes earlier in the Virgin Bet Novice Stakes.

This could go the way of the Archie Watson-trained RADETSKY MARSCH, who showed lots of promise when finishing a good third on his racecourse bow at Sandown last month. There could be more to come from him up in trip, but Eastvan also made an encouraging start to his racing career in August and seems a big threat. Muir Wood boasts an appealing pedigree and completes the shortlist.

On The River has put a number of solid performances together and he is unlikely to be far away at the finish here, while Engles Rock and Chinese Spirit are others to keep an eye on.

WOVEN looked to be back to near his best when he finished second over C&D in the Silver Cup at the Western meeting and has a solid chance of going one better today. There are dangers aplenty, though, including the lightly-raced Maple Jack, who is still 2lb well-in despite carrying a 5lb penalty after winning here nine days ago. Classy Al also shoulders a penalty but should still go well.

In a wide-open contest the marginal preference is for EMERALD LADY, who was not beaten far over course and distance three weeks ago and she could go very well off a 1lb lower mark today. Slainte Mhath is an obvious threat to the selection based on her victory over 6f at Hamilton in late August, while Zig Zag Zyggy and Slate Cracker are others who merit places on the shortlist.

Aighear had Socially Shady just a neck away in third when victorious over 1m7f here last week, but was down the field behind VALLEY OF FLOWERS prior to that. Since that decisive triumph, Jacqueline Coward’s filly has gone agonisingly close at Southwell and, back on turf, can gain compensation for that near-miss. HORSE CARE AT AYR

At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race.
