PROGRAMMEOFFICIAL £3.50FESTIVALCGAYROLDUP THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER OPENING DAY

Dream Walker was a four year-old when he won the Class 4 1m handicap on the opening day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival eight years ago. Ridden by apprentice Phillip Prince and trained by Brian Ellison he tracked the leaders and came with a well-timed run to win comfortably. He won six more races bringing his career tally to 11 wins and also enjoyed a spell in Ireland.
The opening day of the Virgin Ayr Gold Cup Festival has seen some stunning performances down the years these include…

2021 – CHICHESTER
The Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup is the feature race on the opening day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and normally is one of the most competitive races of the three days. However last year it turned into a procession as Chichester romped home by six and a half lengths from stablemate Platinumcard. Jockey Callum Rodriguez oozed confidence as he took his mount to the front over a furlong out and the result was never in doubt from there on in. A really impressive performance.
2019 – MARKAZI
Danny Tudhope drives Markazi out to win the seven furlong handicap on this day in 2019.
2016 - SECRET NUMBER
2013 – DREAM WALKER
Godolphin have a great record in the Doonside Cup and when it was temporarily switched from being run on the Saturday to the opening day they once again produced a horse on top of his game when Secret Number won for Saeed bin Suroor and Danny Tudhope. Returning from a near year-long absence from the track the lightly raced six year-old was far too good for the opposition and won with ease from Motdaw. In 2017 he won a Group 2 contest in Turkey.
THIS DAY IN...
The seven furlong Class 4 handicap attracted a strong field of 14 runners but it was David O’Meara’s five year-old who dictated matters from the off and led all the way to win by two and a half lengths from Sparkalot with Danny Tudhope always looking in control of the race on board Markazi. There were some decent horses behind the winner including Tommy Taylor who was third, King Of Tonga, Glengarry and Right Action.
Our thanks also go to today’s other sponsors- the European Breeders Fund, Phoenix Wealth Solutions, BrandingHub and Signsafe Tra c.

The feature race today is the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup in which there is a maximum field of 14 runners including last year’s winner Chichester and First Impression who was successful in 2020. The race has also attracted runners from the Newmarket stables of Willie Haggas, Richard Spencer and George Boughey.
I’d like to thank the team at Ayr for their sterling work and dedication to ensure this Festival runs smoothly and is a great success.
I am delighted to welcome Virgin Bet as sponsors of the Festival for a second year and everyone at Ayr Racecourse is looking forward to working with such a prestigious brand once again.
Sponsors have never been as important to racing as they are now and we thank Virgin Bet for their support over the three days of what is Scotland’s biggest and richest Flat Racing Festival.
WELCOME to the opening day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival, one which is tinged with an element of sadness following the death of Her Majesty The Queen whose love of racing was well documented.
The 14 runners have won a creditable 71 races between them and this year’s renewal of the Class 2 Handicap looks a particularly strong one.
There are eight races to savour today and live entertainment follows the last race. I hope you all have an enjoyable and successful Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival.
David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

Clifford is enjoying his best ever year and the bulk of his winners have come from his association with Karl Burke who he has ridden for since launching his riding career in 2014. The Burke-Lee pairing team up on several horses today. Over the three days Clifford has a good book of rides and will be aiming to add his already impressive strike rate here.
It is 10 years ago this week that Connor rode his first ever winner and it was here at Ayr. He has gone on to have a superb career so far and is on course to have his best ever wins total this year. It was Michael Dods who supplied Connor with his first winner here on Osteopathic Remedy and a large percentage of the winners the jockey has ridden this year have been for Michael. They team up on a few fancied runners this week including A Boy Named Ivy in the Signsafe Handicap.

Richard has long targeted the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and every year has runners in most of the races over the three days. This year is no exception and he comes here with a strong hand of horses and will be hoping to lift some of the top prizes. His runner in today’s feature race the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup is Spirit Dancer. Over the years Richard has saddled horses to win all the major races at the Festival including the Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups, Firth Of Clyde Stakes and Doonside Cup.

In a fairly open contest, a chance can be taken with BALTIC VOYAGE, who caught the eye when outrunning huge odds at York on his most recent run over 7f. He finished a good fourth behind Desert Order and is entitled to improve for that run. Chuzzlewit drops significantly in grade and seems a big threat, while Youm Saeed boasts an appealing pedigree and would be foolish to rule out.

York’s Convivial maiden tends to throw up some promising sorts and HI ROYAL could be in that mould, having outrun his odds to finish a highly-encouraging third on debut. Kevin Ryan’s charge looks all but guaranteed to relish the step up in trip and he can see off Reidh, who was similarly eye-catching on his racecourse bow at Thirsk. A stablemate of the selection, Cynical is not to be underestimated either, while Power Of Gold looks the pick of the newcomers.

Fresh from Group 1 success aboard Highfield Princess, Jason Hart appears to hold a big chance with Paul Midgley’s LATIN FIVE. The five-year-old had been in good form prior to a below-par effort at Carlisle last month, but the likely strong pace should suit the son of Camacho and, in an open event, he receives a tentative vote. First Impression is rated 4lb lower than when winning this race in 2020 and he warrants respect, as does last year’s scorer Chichester, who is 6lb higher this time around. What’s The Story readily won a small-field C&D handicap last time and he merits consideration, while the dropped-in-trip Tilsitt cannot be ruled out either. However, AL MUBHIR is the least exposed of these and could prove tough to beat lining up off the same mark as when runner-up on his handicap debut at Goodwood.
This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70. This particular handicap is also open to horses rated 101 and 102 as well as horses rated 80 and below.

William Haggas’ charge is open to any amount of improvement now going handicapping for the first time in a first-time hood, and, although she’s got more on her plate than when winning a Catterick novice latest, she might be able to get the early lead and gallop them into submission. SHIMMERING SANDS recorded a comfortable win on his most recent run over 1m 2f last month and a drop in trip may not be enough to stop him from going in again. He seems to have been fairly progressive this season and can make his presence felt. The class-dropping A Boy Named Ivy looks his biggest threat, while Eshtora remains unexposed and open to improvement following a modest run at Sandown in June.

Timbukone’s seconds at Musselburgh and here are evidence that he shouldn’t remain a maiden for too much longer, but a safer option is MONHAMMER. The Linda Perratt-trained four-year-old has twice gone close at Carlisle since breaking through at Musselburgh, and he remains on a nice rating. Rum Going On has been a tad expensive to follow but will pop up again sooner or later, while Global Humor’s Ayr record earns him a mention.
