LOOKING AHEAD…

THE RUSSELL ‘RUSTY BOY’ LAND O’BURNS FILLIES’ STAKES CLASS 1 LISTED RACE Tomorrow’s highlight on our Summer Raceday is the Russell ‘Rusty Boy’ Irish Stallion Farms EBF Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes, Class 1 Listed Race. This contest is all about speed and our five furlong course record was set in this race back in 2008 by Look Busy ridden by Danny Tudhope and trained by Alan Berry. It took the mare a mere 55.68 seconds to complete the five furlongs that day and to underline just how quick that was its worth noting it’s the third fastest five furlong record at any track in Britain with only Epsom and Goodwood boasting faster times . And it was fitting last year when this race was run on a Tuesday that the winner was Keep Busy the daughter of speed queen Look Busy. Ridden by Jason Hart the John Quinn trained filly recorded a time of 58.08 seconds and while that was fast it was not in the class of her mum. In 2016 we were treated to a glimpse of a really classy filly working her way up the racing ladder when Sir Mark Prescott sent Marsha on the long journey from Newmarket with Paul Mulrennan. What the large crowd witnessed that day was a class performance as Paul steered her across the line two and a half lengths clear of Fine Blend. We knew we’d witnessed a very something horse and so it proved when she went on to win two Group 1s – the Prix de L’Abbaye and the Nunthorpe before being sold for a European record six million guineas at the Tattersalls Sales in December 2017. Further back Henry Candy’s Airwave won in 2004 and she also won the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Temple Stakes before being sold to the Coolmore operation and won a Group 2 at the Curragh before being retired to stud. Henry Candy also won the race in 2017 with Spring Fling ridden by Jimmy Sullivan and notched his hat trick when Rebecca Rocks, the mount of Paul Hanagan won in 2019. Tomorrow’s line up includes Karl Burke’s talented three year-old Guilded beaten less than three lengths when finishing seventh in a Group 2 at Chantilly earlier this month and Ed Walker’s Tenaya Canyon only beaten a neck by the 2020 Firth Of Clyde Stakes winner Umm Kulthum at Newmarket in April.
