Hello and a very warm welcome to Ladies Day at the Randox Grand National Festival 2024, a day that is synonymous with Liverpool, and we’re looking forward to a fantastic day of style and racing.
We were treated to brilliant performances on the track yesterday and are looking forward to the action unfolding on course today. Ladies Day is a particularly special day as the annual jockeys’ visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital takes place A host of jockeys who will be riding in the big race tomorrow gave up their time this morning to visit the children and their families in the hospital. Our relationship with Alder Hey spans over two decades, and we are delighted that the final race on the card today will be run as The Alder Hey Handicap Hurdle
Our feature race of the day is the My Pension Expert Melling Chase (Grade 1), and it looks to be a thrilling contest with Jonbon, Pic D’Ohry and Protektorat all set to take their chance The Randox Supports Race Against Dementia Topham Handicap Chase never disappoints as we have our second opportunity to see a race over the famous fences this meeting. Harry Redknapp’s aptly named Shakem Up’arry will be looking to double up on his Cheltenham Festival success and give the popular owner his first win over the National fences.
We are delighted to be partnering with River Island as an official Style Partner for this year’s Style Awards today. As well as two prizes for the best-dressed racegoers, this year’s event also features a prize for the most-sustainably dressed racegoer Amy Hart, Frankie Foster and Natasha Jonas are on the judging panel, as well as honorary judges Tilly and Betsy Williams, daughters of racehorse trainer Christian Williams. The style award competition beings at 10:30am with racegoers able to enter by heading over to one of the style pods. Two are located in the Red Rum Garden with a further booth located on Grand National Avenue You have until 2.20pm to enter the Style Awards with the winner’s announced at 3.10pm on the DJ Platform in the Red Rum Garden. A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 12.40pm.
The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s eight strong parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Becher Chase winner Blaklion and 15 times winner, Lady Buttons.
RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.

Blaklion is owned by David Norcross. He was sent straight from Dan Skeletons to Alice Pimbley to be retrained. Alice has competed him in showing, taken part in fun rides and hunted; they have been very successful in hunt races. The plan is for David’s daughters Olivia and Hollie to take the ride on Blaklion. David says: "He has the life of luxury and owes nobody anything."

Duke of Navan was one of the flag bearing northern horses for a few good years for trainer Nicky Richards for owners David and Nicky Robinson.
Duke of Navan was broken in by jockey Brian Harding who also rode him on the racetrack, He was a yard favourite, and he was Nicky's ride towards the end of his training.
He has gone full circle and is now living the good life with Brian's wife Kelly who has taken him to many fun rides, camps and he's been hunting all winter He won his first RoR show in hand. He is ridden over the fells regularly and he will be aimed at the RoR classes in the summer
Kelly says, "He is adored by all of us, and Duke of Navan still gets visits from all who have been involved with him from the beginning."

Kemboy, the legend, a superstar and general lovely horse who has fitted into his retirement very easily He ran and won his last race, The Bobby-Jo, in February 2023. He was due to retire at Punchestown of 2023 but sadly, he sustained an injury on the gallop, so his retirement was brought forward.
We collected Kemboy in June 2023, he was then turned out in the field all summer and autumn, as we felt he needed a longer break. He was brought back into work in December, mainly hacking, but he has attended two training clinics, which he enjoyed. The future is to do RoR showing and dressage on him, and some jumping, but we will see as it is still early days in his retirement.
Rachel says: "We are very privileged as a family to have Kemboy in his retirement and to take things slowly and carefully."

Jenny Durrans was very lucky to be Lady Buttons’ exercise rider for two seasons, where she had a lot of success. Unfortunately, and very sadly, like many successful mares she couldn’t have foals, so Jenny was delighted to be asked to have her for her life after racing. She now lives in Seahouses, Northumberland. So far, we have done lots of training at home and we are enjoying the RoR Northeast clinics. We tried our hand at showing last summer and she won all three of her ridden classes and went champion RoR at her first show. We qualified for the Jockey Club RoR National Championships and although she didn’t get placed, she was a true professional and we had a blast.
Jenny says: "This year we are going to focus on eventing. Lady Buttons moves well but also has a huge jump, so fingers crossed for a fun summer."

Since retirement in 2015, Master Wickham has shown exceptional ability in every discipline he has competed in. He has won prizes at the most prestigious venues across Great Britain including three times at the British Eventing Amateur Championships at Badminton Horse trials, the Hickstead Derby meeting, the Royal International Horse show, Bramham, Blenheim, Burghley, and he even has a British Showjumping national title to his name
He has won twelve national finals under RoR from show jumping, eventing, and combined training, to showing and dressage He comes into the parade having competed at the British Showjumping Winter Championships just six days ago

Melon joined Sophie Candy during the summer of 2022 after a very successful racing career when trained by Willie Mullins including four seconds at the Cheltenham Festival. Melon has continued to prove himself to be an absolute gentleman. He was foot perfect in the 2023 Aintree parade and continues to give Sophie the most wonderful days out. He has been out hunting plenty, thoroughly enjoying himself, a little too much at times! He has proved to be a very able team chaser, having had several wins with Team Ride Away ridden by Sophie’s partner, Joe
Sophie says: "He absolutely loves life, especially splashing in the river down by the yard."

Touch Of Faith retired from racing after three unsuccessful starts on the Flat in 2017 and has since competed at pro elite level in Horseball. He is normally ridden by Jude Worthington but is ridden today by Ben Berry as Jude is recovering from a hip operation. Worthington rides him in the ladies’ league and second division. She has previously been a member of the Open Championship winning team in both ladies and pro elite, as well as previously training and competing with Team GB in the under 21 categories.
Jude says: "Touch of Faith is a superstar; he is a very willing partner and I am really enjoying competing with him."

An Injury in 2018 ended Peveril Point’s racing career after just two starts
He was then bought by Jude Worthington to retrain in Horseball for herself and her husband, David. Perveril Point and David are currently competing in pro elite Horseball. They are playing in the champions league in October with the OutGunned team representing GB.
David says: "Perveril Point is proving to be a multi-talented former racehorse, as he is also training in dressage and hunts occasionally with Jude."

To most BRITS aged 60-plus, mention of "66" conjures up memories of a glorious July Wembley afternoon, and Geoff Hurst – immortalised by THAT Kenneth Wolstenholme QUOTE – finally putting England on the WORLD CUP football map
But back in 1929, to a fearless army of jump jockeys that included V.Piggott, F.Fish, brothers F & W Gurney, Captains A.F.W.Gossage and R.E.Sassoon, and Mr R. Gubbins, 66 represented something rather different, because this was the extraordinary record number of horses ever to line up (IN TWO ROWS!) for a Grand National, worth £13,000 to connections of the victorious Gregalach.
TIM HAMEY, who would write his name into Aintree folklore aboard 1932 winner FORBRA, was another of those brave - some might say "bonkers" – 66 horsemen to set out on the gruelling four and a half miles stamina test Only the previous March, just TWO finished out of 42 starters, and one of those, runner-up Billy Barton, was remounted after falling at the final fence when upsides 100-1 winner Tipperary Tim.
Hamey, on Grakle, the subsequent 1931 hero, came home sixth of only 10 to complete the course in 1929. His vivid recollections of that recordsized field were that the START was "like the CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE", a reference to the 1854 BATTLE OF BALACLAVA during the CRIMEAN WAR.
Born James Henry Hamey in Grantham on December 17, 1905, he adopted a different Christian name to avoid confusion with other established jockeys in the stables run by Captain Kirk (honestly!) on Cleeve Hill, overlooking Cheltenham racecourse He was only 16 when he had his first mount over jumps, on Castlerobin at Birmingham on November 27th, 1922, having partnered just two Flat winners, at Leicester and Birmingham.
Tim’s rapid weight rise then forced the inevitable switch to jumping, but his career flourished. And 1926 brought the big breakthrough, with his first major triumph, on KOKO, who proved he was no clown with an emphatic success in only the third running of the CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, worth just £880!
Later that March, Tim made his Grand National debut on the same horse but was brought down at Becher’s Brook. Koko, one of eight Cheltenham Festival winners for Hamey, was the first of his 12 consecutive National rides, and his place in the Aintree hall-of-fame arrived on March 18th, 1932, at the seventh attempt, on 50-1 chance Forbra, a flatracing reject owned by Ludlow mayor and turf accountant William Parsonage and prepared at Kinnersley, Worcestershire by Tom Rimell, father of Fred. (For the record, Hamey’s son Rex had seven mounts in the National, registering a personal best seventh in 1955,
and my father Len, Tim’s brother-inlaw, tasted the experience just once - 99 years ago - on Ardeen, a 1925 Canal Turn casualty).
YES, this was the same FRED RIMELL who would saddle four National winners between 1956 and 1976, ESB, Nicolaus Silver, Gay Trip and Rag Trade, a feat only matched by Ginger McCain, with Red Rum’s historic treble and Amberleigh House
But Fred was only 18 in 1932, too inexperienced to tackle the massive Merseyside obstacles, so giving Tim the opportunity to become one of the first jockeys to taste success in steeplechasing’s "BIG TWO"
Forbra’s place in the 1932 line-up actually came about fortuitously He had cost Mr Parsonage 1500 guineas not long before his colours of French grey, dark blue sleeves, red cap were donned at Newbury in December, 1931 when beaten five lengths by the legendary Golden Miller, only to be awarded first prize when it emerged the "Miller" had carried the wrong weight. And because of the value of that Newbury event, Forbra was now qualified for the National! What a double dose of "Lady Luck"! Less than three months later, Golden Miller landed the first of his never-to-be-repeated famous five Blue Riband triumphs in Gloucestershire.
The original idea was to run in the less taxing Stanley Chase the day before the National. But when the horse became "N.Q" for the "Stanley" with a victory at Taunton, the decision was taken to go for the "BIG ONE" And so, Forbra, a virtual novice carrying 10-7, lined up against 35 rivals including the three previous winners, Gregalach, Shaun Goilin and Grakle In a race full of grief, Tim and Forbra galloped to a three lengths victory over the amateur-ridden Egremont.
The runner-up’s jockey, Edward Paget, a London stockbroker, was thus denied a whopping £4,000 payout by his bookmaker for a £1 "Spring Double" wager after correctly predicting 40-1 shot Jerome Fandor would win the Lincoln!
Forbra, so named because he was by FORESIGHT out of THYMBRA, competed in two more Nationals, finishing last of 6 in 1933, with Hamey up again; then as a nine-year-old and partnered by Gerry Hardy, he came home fourth of 8 behind the "Miller", who was landing that historic Gold Cup-National double (1934)
Besides Hamey and Hardy, Forbra was partnered in public by a trio of champions, Gerry Wilson, Billy Stott and Fred Rimell of course The latter rode the horse just three times, sadly culminating in a fatal fall for Forbra at Newbury on January 26th, 1935. A tragic end to a wonderful career
Since 1955, the horse has been honoured each February at LUDLOW, with the running of the Forbra Gold Challenge Cup Steeple Chase, a beautiful solid gold trophy donated by the Parsonage family 70 years ago, and reputedly today worth £150,000 The popular and valuable ‘chasing prize went to the Paul Nicholls stable for the first time in 2019, with Tommy Silver, and was this year won by Topham Trophy-bound Arizona Cardinal, trained by Stuart Edmunds.
Tim Hamey, for whom Le Bizco was his 333rd and final riding success over jumps, at Huntingdon in 1940, went on to train around 50 winners, mostly from his base alongside Prestbury Park. He spent his final years in accommodation provided by Lord Oaksey’s I.J.F in Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, and following his death, aged 84, Tim was described by Lord Oaksey at his memorial service as "A DIAMOND OF A MAN"

RACE DESCRIPTION This two and a half mile handicap hurdle is always a competitive contest and is one of the only intermediate trip handicap hurdles. Many trainers target this due to the favourable trip, with novices holding a particularly strong record thanks to the lateness it is staged in the season With a big field, horses with good tactical speed are able to excel and it is always a highly competitive race.
Ben Harvey delivered a fantastic ride on the handicap debutant Fennor Cross in last year's renewal Given a patient ride by his jockey the pair were more than happy to watch the race play out in front of them, in what can only be described as a thrilling finish. They began to creep into the race gradually and soon found themselves at the front after the long-time leader West To The Bridge ran out of steam. The step up in trip clearly suited and he posted a career best effort to power away from Buddy One and Sonigino who also ran well in behind.

From the start of the Randox sponsorship of the Grand National in 2017, Randox CEO DR. Peter FitzGerald proposed that a unique trophy would be designed and produced each year. The winning owner received a full-size trophy, with the winning trainer, jockey and groom all receiving a miniature version.
Each trophy is uniquely Randox and has a story to tell. The design on the trophy has evolved over the years. Innovation is a characteristic that Randox takes great pride in – Randox is dedicated to improving health using innovative diagnostic technologies. This year’s design was the innovative work of talented De Montfort University placement student, Ritik Manoj Tailor
On his design, Ritik says "I am very fortunate to be given the opportunity to design the Randox Grand National trophy.
Being entrusted with such an important design at the start of my placement is quite rewarding. With the support of the team, I was able to create a trophy that feels like a major accomplishment for me as an intern. It’s also an incredible opportunity as the trophy is being presented to the winning jockey at the Randox Grand National. It is a great feeling that something I have created will be woven into the history of such a prestigious sporting event."
This year’s trophy has two key elements – the beautifully crafted horse and the stand on which it sits – a DNA helix, holding significant meaning and representation of Randox.
The horse, as the most iconic symbol of the Grand National was something Ritik considered an essential component to incorporate into the design. "I wanted to capture the racehorse in a way that would make it I stand out as the focal point of the trophy" adds Ritik, "After brainstorming a couple of sketches, I decided on a dynamic and lifelike horse sculpture."
But the life-like horse sculpture is not the only element that makes this trophy unique
The Randox iconic logo is incorporated into the base in a subtle, yet impactful way – perfectly complimenting the horse To tie everything together the DNA Helix design is another key feature, "I wanted to incorporate Randox’s expertise in the field of biochemistry and molecular diagnostics into the design. This intricate design is etched into the metal base of the horse, symbolising Randox’s icon."
The Randox Grand National trophies over the years have been brought to life by silversmith, Cara Murphy who adds, “This is the fifth year I have had the honour of making the Randox Grand National trophy. It is always exciting to see the different design and how it celebrates this event."

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is one for the stayers, with plenty of previous winners going on to achieve great things over longer trips and over fences First ran in 1988, the race rose through the Graded ranks to achieve Grade 1 status in 1995, with Morgan's Harbour becoming the first winner of the race as a Grade 1. Since then, racing royalty have won this, with Sir Anthony McCoy, Richard Johnson and Paul Carberry all riding winners. This is one race at the meeting where 'fresh' horses go well, so keep a keen eye open on the ones who didn't run in March.

One hundred years ago, a typical Aintree fairytale was played out when Master Robert, a horse whose career had been plagued by foot and wind problems, and his unfashionable jockey namesake Robert Trudgill who rode with his leg stitched up, won the Grand National by four lengths at 25-1.

Irish-bred in 1913 by Robert McKinley and originally trained on the Curragh by Algy Anthony, Master Robert accompanied the highly regarded 1920 National hero Troytown in his work but was thought to be only moderate. Anthony returned the horse to his breeder who put him to plough in the fields of County Donegal in an attempt to clear his suspect wind issues and get him sound. He later changed hands for just £50 and was sent to England as a potential point-to-pointer then eventually sold to Lord Airlie with the objective of the peer riding him in the Scottish Military Gold Cup at Perth. This he won, under the welter burden of 13st 13lb, with his owner/rider putting up an incredible 37lb overweight.

The renowned Aubrey Hastings, whose Wroughton yard had already sent out three National winners, one of whom – Ascetic’s Silver in 1906 – he also rode, took over training duties with Master Robert and managed to win good chases at Newbury, Cheltenham and Aintree with him. However, the horse was increasingly handicapped by his navicular hoof problems for which he was constantly poulticed and so was an unconsidered outsider for the 1924 big Aintree race
Finding a jockey also proved an uphill task, with several leading riders declining the ride Hastings settled on journeyman Bob Trudgill who was only too keen to accept the mount. However, 24 hours before the race, he suffered a bad fall yet ignored the racecourse doctor’s advice and weighed out to ride Master Robert with his leg heavily stitched.
Perseverance and bravery won the day for the unlikely duo, as they were badly outpaced in the early stages, but gradually wore down the leaders to triumph going away, in the process beating two previous National winners Shaun Spadah and Sergeant Murphy. The stitches in Trudgill’s leg came undone and he was on the point of collapse, blood streaming down his leg after dismounting. Master Robert was never asked to race again.

RACE DESCRIPTION A two mile handicap hurdle, this race has switched positions in the schedule to the final race on day two of the meeting, whereas previously it rounded out the meeting as the final race on Saturday A chance for the Amateur and Conditional riders to shine, the likes of Jamie Codd, David Mullins and David Bass have all won this previously. Always ran at a fast pace, hold up horses fare well in these kinds of races.
Our finale on the second day was concluded by the biggest price winner on the card all Festival, as Punctuation returned a surprise winner at 40/1 Showing significant improvement from the pulled-up effort last time out in the Imperial Cup, he defied a career high mark, albeit his jockey Liam Harrison was taking off a handy 3lb. He was much the best here though and careered away from his rivals with ease to give Fergal O'Brien his first victory in this race
For the minor placings Blueking D'Ooux was headed at the last and settled for second and he was in turn 6 lengths ahead of Washington

Alder Hey Children’s Charity is fundraising for the installation of a brand new state-of-the-art MediCinema to be built at the hospital.
The cinema is set to provide a welcome boost to the wellbeing of our long-term patients and give them the opportunity to experience the joy of cinema from the safety of our hospital, all whilst providing them with memorable moments with their friends and families.
One patient who would have benefitted from the cinema during their time at Alder Hey is 7-year-old Ivy, who was born with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome and has had three open-heart surgeries at the hospital to date, as well as numerous other procedures.
Clare, Ivy’s mum, told us: “Having a MediCinema in the hospital whilst Ivy was an inpatient would have been brilliant. Ivy has always loved films, particularly Disney films, her favourite is Wish and she so enjoyed going to watch it at the cinema”.
“If this facility had been available whilst Ivy was in hospital it would have given her a bit of normality and the opportunity for a break away from the ward as the days can be so long when you are stuck in one room. Going to the cinema allows Ivy to escape into another world and forget about all the procedures she is going through and makes her feel like any other child, and it is so great that the children at Alder Hey are going to get this opportunity too.”
By equipping the cinema with space for wheelchairs, beds, and medical equipment, as well as being staffed by specially trained clinical staff, parents and carers can enjoy the film alongside their child with the knowledge that they are comfortable and safe
Clare said: “It would have given her some normality away from the ward, but we would also feel comfortable knowing nurses and clinicians were on hand should she need them. She loves watching films and it would have been something for us all to look forward to and enjoy as a family It also would have given her the opportunity to spend some time with her brother who she missed whilst she was in hospital.
Being able to spend time with the whole family and being able to see siblings and share that experience can reconnect the family during a difficult time and really boost the mental health of the child who is in hospital.”
