This five furlongs contest is for horses aged 3-5 years is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 49 to 68 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

This is a one mile, four furlongs and one hundred yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

This is a seven handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4.30 THE RACECOURSE LIVE STREAMS ON RACING TV EXTRA HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and two yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 65 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.

3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

Crack The Kode had both Zaphea and ScoopsAhoy well behind when signing off thelastcampaignwithavictoryatCatterick, but the pair do benefit from a 5lb and 4lb swing in the weights respectively here. Zaphea is the sole course and distance winner in the field, winning here from a 7lb lower mark in September, and should improveforherstabledebutforIainJardine whenthirdatAyr.

Despite a promising run when keeping on into second at Catterick last time, David O’Meara’s Scoops Ahoy is now just 1lb above his last winning mark and should appreciate a return to better ground.

Whogoesthereisstillyettoshedhismaiden tag after seven starts but does arrive here on the back of a career best effort at Southwell. Showing plenty of early pace, theDeclanCarroll-trainedgeldingjusttired slightly late on, which is to be expected on reappearance, and he can go well here eased1lbbythehandicapper.

Race preview from Weatherbys

Shifter is likely to be popular for Wilf Storey in the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap if primed for her return run here. A determined winner over a mile at Ayr last August, the five-year-old improved for the step up in trip when staying on extremely strongly to get up in the dying strides from the rear over ten furlongs at Redcar. Leaving the impression she would get further, she again kept on well up in distance to finish fourth at Newcastle and is still unexposed at these sorts of trips.

JockeyPaulMulrennanhasanexcellent record here at Musselburgh, notching 33 winners at a 15% strike rate across the last five seasons, and he rides LetsbefrankforJimGoldie.Wellbeaten in two starts over a mile since joining his new yard, he showed enough when third at Epsom over ten furlongs last Octobertosuggestthistripwillseehim to better effect, especially in handicap company. The lightly raced four-yearold has had just the three career starts and has more scope for improvement thanothersinthisfield.

On the other end of the scale, Brian Ellison’s The Dancing Poet is the most experienced in this field with 53 career runs under his belt and whilst he is the most exposed, has now dropped back down to his last winning mark.

He looked in desperate need of the run when weakening quickly away on reappearance at Catterick, but the trainerdoesreachforcheekpieceshere and it is worth noting that three of his victoriescamewhensportingheadgear.

Seven-year-old Carlos Felix couldn’t have enjoyed a better stable debut for Stella Barclay, a rather comfortable winner despite the big starting price overthistripatNewcastleinNovember.

He has been given a break following a below par effort just ten days later and, although up 3lbs for that latest victory, Carlos Felix is a dour stayer at the trip.
