Wearesurethatourgreat, great, great, greatGrandfather, CharlesHallwouldbeamazedthathisbreweryistheoldest brewery to be owned by the same family throughout its history of 247 years. We think that he would have been equally amazed and delighted that our beer brand Badger is the oldest sponsor in racing. Back in 1962 our mothers Sally and Susie persuaded our fathers that it would be great to join the likes of Whitbread and Hennessey in sponsoring a race. The first race was due to be run on Boxing Day in that year but months of snow and ice saw it eventually run at Wincanton in March 1963.
Today is therefore a big day out for the Hall & Woodhouse family with over 400 Team Members, Shareholders and Pub Business Partners attending and we hope everyone enjoys it as much as we will!

Welcome to Badger Beers Chase Day, and day two of the West Country Weekend. This is one of our favourite racedays of the year, and we are delightedthat you’re able to join us.We look set for a fantastic day’s racing with a competitive card getting underway at 12:35pm.
The highlight of the day is the 63rd running of the Badger Beer Handicap Chase The three miles and a furlong contest is the longest-running commercial sponsorship in UK Jump racing and worth a total of £80,000 Locally trained The Changing Man heads the betting for the Tizzard team with last year’s winning trainer, Anthony Honeyball bringing three runners to try and retain the famous Badger Beers trophy. We wish all connections of all our runners the very best of luck.
It has been a busy week here at the racecourse, as we welcomed 75 local school children on Tuesday to launch Badger Chase Day week. The children from three local schools took part in a Gallagher Experience Day where they were introduced to all our fantastic sport has to offer. I’d like to thank this opportunity to thank all in the industry who helped make the event such a success; RacingtoSchool, GBR, World Horse Welfare, Jockey Club Catering and ROR. We hope we have managed to encourage the children to explore all that racing has to offer.
While you’re with us today, we encourage you to go and take a look at the GBR Jockey Hub located next to the Hurdles Bar. There will be signings by jockeys throughout the day, as well as the opportunity to have a go yourself on the equicisor!
As ever, we would like to thank all our partners for their continued support today, included Hall and Woodhouse, BetMGM, and Boodles. We wish them and their guests a wonderful day with us
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the team here at Wincanton and at Exeter for a fantastic West Country Weekend. We love being able to bring two of the region’s biggest racedays together in this manner and are thrilled that you’re able to join us today.
We hope you have a wonderful time and hope to welcome you back for our next race meeting on Thursday 21st November.

Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered
3 or 4 runners: all to win Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2
5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd
8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th
Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
The first Badger Beer Chase was run in 1962, where it was won by Quick Step II fortrainerW R Williams, who incidentally also rode him to victorythat day.
Hall and Woodhouse are the longest current sponsor in British Jump Racing after beginning their sponsorship back in 1962. The race was originally run over a distance of two-miles-and-five-furlongs until 1990 but was then upped in distance to its current three-miles-and-one-furlong.
In 2003 it was awarded Listed status but with the removal of Listed races in 2022, it then became a Premier Handicap, which it has been known as ever since.
Nova Light became the first horse to win the race twice, in 1970 and 1972 respectively for trainer Les Kennard. He has since been joined by Panto Prince (1990,93), Flaked Oats (1999,2000), Swansea Bay (2002,2003) and finally Present Man (2017,2018), for the current leading trainer Paul Nicholls.
The master of Ditcheat has trained no fewer than eleven runners to victory since 1999, with his first winner coming courtesy of Flaked Oats, who also became the first back-to-back winner of the race when following it up 12 months later under Timmy Murphy.
His most famous winner was probably 2022 winner Frodon, who was a real star for the yard The son of Nickname won three Grade One’s, including the King George and Ryanair Chase and amassed over a million pounds in prize money and is arguably the most impressive winner of the race
Bryony Frost also won the race in 2017 and 2018 on the Present Man but the leading jockey is Timmy Murphy on five wins. His success came between 2000 and 2012, with his final winner coming courtesy of The Package in 2012 for David Pipe, who himself has three winners on the roll of honour
The race this year looks to be another fascinating renewal, with Al Dancer making the weights for Sam Thomas. The eleven-year-old isn’t getting any younger but did go close in the Coral Handicap Chase and a repeat of that effort could see him go close.
Lord Accord sits at the other end of the weights and will be well fancied for this after winning consecutive races at Sedgefield and Wincanton respectively His last success was an emphatic 16-length win over course and distance and despite this being a step up in class, he looks to be a real player off his current weight.
Mofasa is the sole representative for Paul Nicholls, who goes in search of a 12th win in the race He was tried in some top company last year and will be sure to go close if ready to go for his first start of the new season.

THE CHANGING MAN pulled a long way clear ofthe rest when chasing home one who rather had the run of things at Uttoxeter in March and, likely to do better still in his second season over fences, he gets the nod. The hat-trick seeking Lord Accord is next on the list ahead of Remastered, while Mofasa needs to get back on track but he will be a danger to all if able to do so off this reduced mark.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
The centre of the course viewing is available to all Premier enclosure ticket holders. Please note you must stay within the designated area and access will not be allowed from the time horses are on the course until all horses have left the course The only exception to this will be for owners and trainers with runners on the day and racecourse officials.
Racegoers may take photographs for private use within the areas normally open to the public Flash photography is not permitted.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £216,477 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 1st January to 22nd March 2024
