By Jack Vincent WILLIAM H Clark and Sons have been working the Weardale shows for as long as many of us can remember and like most businesses they have suffered financially due to Covid-19. The fair took the opportunity to contact the organisers of Wolsingham showfield after the main show was cancelled, to see if they could still come to Weardale. Mr Clark said “Our business has been bit really hard with the Covid situation. Events,
fairs, galas and corporate bookings were cancelled and I was really grateful that the Show Committee allowed us to use the show field. Normally, this would have been the Stanhope Show weekend and it feels really strange not to be there. I have attended Wolsingham, Stanhope and St John’s from being a child”. Weardale Community News attended the opening night of the fair on Friday 18th September. In the absence of other exhibitors, the car parking was plentiful. On entry
to the show, security staff were conducting temperature checks and completing track & trace forms. Sanitizer stations were stocked and on every ride with social distancing being observed by staff and visitors alike. Between rides fairground staff used spray to clean down any seats and surfaces that had been touched. With so many events being forced to close over the course of the pandemic it was nice to see the fair in Wolsingham, albeit just for a weekend.

AS the effects of Covid-19 are felt on the hospitality industry, pubs are finding it difficult to cope with the new restrictions. Sadly, our local pubs are struggling too, and the landlords of the Black Bull in Wolsingham have made the difficult decision to close their pub. From the 31st October the Black Bull will ring last orders for the final time. Tom and Dawn have been running the pub for the last 15 months and have enjoyed their time running a pub with such a long history. Until the end of the month they will continue to operate as normal, serving good quality food and drinks.
