Education During a Pandemic PARENTS are concerned for the safety of their children as they return to school in September. Jonathan Ferstenberg, head teacher of Wolsingham School, writes for the Weardale Community News about how his school is prepared for the challenges that the new term will bring. For many aspects of life, government guidance directs us to balance safety measures, like masks, hand sanitiser, or social distancing, against the needs of the particular context - for example the need to go food shopping, to visit the pharmacist or to see an elderly relative. In schools, the need is to educate all children to the highest possible standard, while also promoting the well-
being of students and staff. The government has therefore tailored its guidance to these needs. Three key underlying themes in government guidance are crucial here: First, schools must offer an education to all students that is as close as possible to the curriculum delivered during normal times. Second, all schools are limited financially – most schools cannot hire a set of extra teachers or a fleet of extra busses to enable them to teach different year groups throughout the day, for instance. Therefore, third, the government guidance cannot eliminate the possibility of cross contamination; it can only limit the opportunities for cross-contamination and limit the number of students who

might be exposed to any child who does become ill. Government guidance does recognise that every school is different, so I can only explain the health and safety measures Wolsingham School has put in place and which we used successfully to educate children of key workers and many of our Year 10 students throughout lockdown last term. Measures at Wolsingham School: The measures below are a small taste of what we have put in place. A set of our plans, which were developed following consultation and feedback from staff, parents and Health and Safety authorities at Durham County Council, runs to over 20 pages. A message from Councillor Anita Savory
THIS month I have used some of the small grants budget to support a project at Crosshill Nursing Home in Stanhope. The staff have been working very hard to create a Seaside Memories Day. There will be a seaside theme with bunting and a backdrop with seagulls on. Seaside songs and fairground music will be played in the background. The funding will
pay for Fish and Chips from a local supplier for the residents to enjoy which will all add to the atmosphere of the event. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all schoolchildren, either those starting or returning to school in September, good luck. The staff in all schools, teachers, support staff, caretakers, cleaners, and catering staff have been working extremely
hard and recognise the safety of the pupils is paramount whilst we still battle Covid-19. Also, good luck to all the young people who are moving on to gain further qualifications at colleges and universities. In the meantime, we all have our part to play, do not become complacent, continue to follow the guidelines. Take care and stay safe.
