As 2024 draws to a close, I’d like to share some of the key accomplishments this past year at Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation:
• Pierce Lake Golf Course set a record with the most rounds played this past season.
• Nearly 40 miles have been completed on the B2B Trail since inception.
• Opened the new Title IX Plaza along the B2B Trail in August celebrating several local women and their advocacy for equity in sports.
• Stewardship at parks and preserves was supported by a number of grants and private donations valued at over $30,000. This work has supported the restoration of grasslands at Northfield and Ervin-Stucki Preserves, the control of invasive Stiltgrass and Phragmities, the planting of over 800 trees along waterbodies and forest edges, and the opening of the Anschuetz Highland Preserve.
• Both the Road and Trails millage and the Parks operating millage passed in August with nearly 70% support allowing us to continue improving and maintaining our parks, facilities, and trails.
• Staff worked with consultants to develop the 2025-2029 Recreation Master Plan which sets the direction for County Parks for the next five years.
• Several Capital Improvement projects were completed including:
– Pathways, drives, and paved trails repaired at Rolling Hills County Park
– New dining and rental spaces at Rolling Hills County Park
– Independence Lake County Park Maintenance Building and Beach Center Facility Condition Assessment and Schematic Designs
In addition to these projects, we held several hundred programs over the past year at our various facilities including at Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center and at the Michigan Folk School.
Looking to take a class, attend an event, or learn a new hobby? Our Winter program guide provides dozens of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor recreation. We hope to see you soon at the parks!

Swim Lessons
PARENT TOT + PRESCHOOL
The goal of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Parent Tot and Preschool Lessons are to get toddlers and preschoolers comfortable in the water. These instructor-led classes help provide a solid foundation for swimming skills that will last a life-time. Comfortability in the water is our top priority as it ensures your child will learn how to be safe in the water. As they progress and graduate each level, they are introduced to new skills that our instructors continue to build upon through Level 5.
