From the Director CELEBRATING 50 YEARS! 1973-2023 Since 1973, Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation has been integral in making our county a highly desirable region by providing outstanding parks, programs, and facilities. We began 2023 with a year-long tribute recognizing our 50th Anniversary. Throughout the past year, several events at our parks and facilities commemorated our 50th year, culminating in an event held at Pierce Lake Golf Club in October.

Receiving the 2023 Innovative Park Resources Award from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association; WCPARC collaborated with the Washtenaw County Treasurer’s Office to establish a long-term funding source to support the perpetual maintenance operation of our Natural Areas Preservation Program as well as the County’s Border-to-Border Trail
•
Acquiring the Michigan Folk School, now part of Staebler Farm County Park, and the opening of the new Blackbird Lodge
•

Hosting several special events including a new Craft Show at Independence Lake, annual Trek or Treat at Rolling Hills, Movie Night at Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center, and the annual Ice Carving Festival at County Farm Park

Constructing 3.1 miles of the Border-to-Border Trail in 2023 and finishing next summer

Independence Lake Park WINTER 2023-2024 PROGRAMS
YULE LOG MAKING
Friday, December 8 | 5:45pm-6:45pm & 7pm-8pm Program fee is $10 per family/household, up to 4 members These yule logs are not the edible kind but the ones to bring the magic of winter nature into your home. A selection of greenery, pinecones, and ribbon will be available for you to create a yule log to use as a winter decoration in your home. Feel free to bring any additional items from home. Participants will be trimming greenery and hot gluing items to their logs. This activity is not recommended for children under 10yrs. LANTERN LIT TRAIL: CELEBRATE SOLSTICE
Thursday, December 21 | 6pm-8:30pm Program fee is $10 per family/household, up to 4 members Join us in celebrating one of the shortest days of the year. Our Indy Woods paved path will be lit with luminaries and lanterns for a self-guided walk. The walk takes approximately 25 minutes. There will be a campfire, s’mores and hot cocoa. Trail is not plowed if we receive snow. Dog walkers welcome and if conditions are right there might be a special guest from the North Pole. YOGA IN THE PARK- WINTER YOGA PACKAGE (WINTER YOGA 1 & 2)

Join us for an informational, hands-on clinic to learn about this fun winter activity! Kids will learn about winter fishing, safety practices, and types of fish. Clinic includes receiving fish identification and logbook. Practice skills learned on the ice with staff and then warm up with hot cocoa and treats. We will learn what constellations are visible in the winter sky and tell their stories. After watching the sky enjoy some delicious treats next to a toasty fire sipping on warm cocoa. Saturday, February 10 | 7am – 3pm Fee $20 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under Join us for a fun-filled day of fishing! For adult division First Place longest Northern Pike, Second/Third Place for Pan fish. For child division, the longest fish will win a prize. Bring your own bait and equipment. A Fishing license is required per DNR regulations. Lunch will be provided between 11am and 1:30pm. No alcohol, ATVs or snowmobiles. SUNRISE NATURE HIKE Devine Preserve We are mere days away from the winter solstice and although many plants, animals and birds have prepared themselves for sleeping the long, cold months away, there are several still out and about enjoying the frosty air. Come savor the brisk morning and see how the woods and fields and all their inhabitants are changing as they prepare for winter’s long sleep. Proper winter gear and binoculars are recommended. This meditative hike is focused on reconnecting with yourself and the natural world, which can be quite restorative during this dark time of the year. Goodrich Preserve Winter is well underway but there is still plenty of beauty to be seen. Leaves and flowers may be absent, but the trees and roots are slumbering and dreaming of spring. Spent seed heads decorate the trails with a unique beauty and the tracks of adventurous animals can be seen in the snow. The magic of a starflake, or snowflake as most call them, is truly fascinating. RAMBLING READERS BOOK CLUB Independence Lake County Park | Vehicle entry fee required Do you love learning and reading about the natural world and talking with others about your nature passion? Do you like strolling through the woods and other natural areas, and do you leave curious to learn more? Are you interested in building a community of people who share these same pursuits? If so, this book club is for you. Join naturalist Elle Bogle for a quarterly club where participants will discuss a nature focused book then hike together to continue discussion or simply enjoy nature. Each book will be chosen ahead of time and all selections will be available at local libraries. SUNRISE NATURE HIKE Draper-Houston Meadows Preserve Deep in the heart of winter, things may seem bleak but there’s actually so much beauty to be found. In the stillness, we are able to listen to the songs of birds, breathe in the scents of the forest, feel the distinct texture of each tree's bark, catch glimpses of hawks, and see the tracks of animals out for winter wanderings. LIBRARY PROGRAM: VERNAL POOLS Milan Library Come unravel the mystery of the unique and important wetlands called vernal pools. Learn how to properly identify, interact with, and protect these delicate and magical habitats which serve as both homes and essential breeding grounds to many animals including blue spotted salamanders, wood frogs, and fairy shrimp. WINTER WANDER Sharon Mills County Park - North Lot Wander frozen fields and the river's edge as we observe local trees, wildlife, and hopefully tracks if there is snow. Program led by Kelsey Dehring. FULL MOON OWL HIKE West Lake Preserve | Ages 10 and up. Bundle up for a sparkling hike in the light of the full moon. With senses heightened by night, we will call for owls and experience nature after dark. Hike will end with s'mores around the campfire. Start the afternoon with an orientation to the special nature at Fox Science Preserve. Swim Lessons PARENT TOT + PRESCHOOL
The goal of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Parent Tot and Preschool Lessons are to get toddlers and preschoolers comfortable in the water. These instructor-led classes help provide a solid foundation for swimming skills that will last a life-time. Comfortability in the water is our top priority as it ensures your child will learn how to be safe in the water. As they progress and graduate each level, they are introduced to new skills that our instructors continue to build upon through Level 5.
