Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

MARCH NIGHT HIKE

March 4 | 7:00pm - 9:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Explore the park on a lantern lit one-mile trail with a self-guided hike through the woods. Weather, trail type and trail conditions will dictate which trail will be lit. There will be a campfire, s’mores, and hot cocoa at our Beach Center Pavilion after your hike. Dog walkers welcome. Only one person needs to register as the fee is per family/ household. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Participants must check in by 8pm to complete program by 9pm. Registration # IL431310.

SPRING FIRESIDE STORYTIME

March 5 | 10:00am - 11:30am | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Go on a short nature hike to search for signs of spring with Naturalist, Elle Bogle, then warm up around the campfire with stories, treats, and hot beverages. Program is recommended for ages 3-8. Only one family member needs to register, as the fee is per family/household. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461311.

FULL WORM MOON NIGHT HIKE

March 18 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm & 8:00pm - 9:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members March’s full moon is considered the last one of winter and is often called the worm moon for all the emerging earthworms in the northern hemisphere. This is also the time in March when salamanders begin to migrate to vernal pools for breeding. Join naturalist, Elle Bogle, for a hike to learn all about the worm moon and to look for salamanders if weather conditions are just right. Emails will be sent the week of the program to indicate what to wear and bring. There will be a campfire, s’mores, and hot cocoa at our Beach Center Pavilion after the hike. Dog walkers welcome only if conditions are NOT right for salamanders. Only one person is needed to register, as the fee is per family/household. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. YOGA IN THE PARK - SPRING YOGA PACKAGE

Sundays, April 3 - May 22 | 9am - 10am | $80 Slow flow yoga class, all levels welcome, no experience necessary. Emphasis is placed on core strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, and breath control. In-person yoga will be held here in the park. If you would rather do yoga virtually then Zoom with us. The time and day are the same. If weather is not favorable inperson yoga may be substituted for virtual session for that day only. Pre-registration required. Registration # IL441104.

Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

SPRING BIRD EGG HUNT

April 9 | 10:00am - 11:30am & Noon - 1:30pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Eggs, eggs all kinds of eggs: robin eggs, goose eggs, bluebird eggs and more! Bird eggs come in so many beautiful sizes and colors. How many can you identify? Join naturalist, Elle Bogle, for a spring egg hunt to learn all about the bird’s native to our area, how to identify their eggs, then search for hidden wooden replicas of these birds’ eggs throughout the park. Each child will be lent a basket for egg collection and given a bird identification handout. How many can you find? Eggs will be returned after the hunt and exchanged for candy. Only one person is needed to register, as the fee is per family/household. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration # IL461100.

DISC GOLF GLOW NIGHTS

April 8 & May 13 | 8:30pm - 11:30pm | $5 per Night or Free for an Annual Bag Tag Holders Come join us for Disc Golf Glow Nights at the park. Starting in April and continuing through September, meeting the second Friday of the month, times varying based on sunset. We will illuminate our disc golf baskets 1-18 for night play. This is the only time each month that you can disc golf in the park after dark. Bring your own glow discs, glow tape, and glow lights for your discs. There is walk up registration. Registration # IL451100.

FROG CALLING NIGHT HIKE

April 22 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm & 8:00pm - 9:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members The peepers are peeping, and the toads are trilling. Go on an evening hike in a beautiful oak woods dotted with vernal pools and bordered by marsh. We will learn about the different frog and toad species in Michigan, and practice identifying their calls. No dogs allowed. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

SIGNS OF SPRING STORYTIME

April 23 | 10am - 11:30am | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Gather around the campfire for a Spring story time, make a Magic Spring Wand, and then go on a short nature hike with your wand to wake up spring. Program led by Shawn Severance. Pre- registration required at parksonline.ewashtenaw.org. Only one family member needs to register, as the fee is per family/household. Check-in will be at the Lodge. SPRING MINDFULNESS HIKE Miller-Smith Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle Hints of Spring are starting to appear and the transition from dark to light is becoming stronger. Enjoy a quiet meditative walk and connect with the abundant nature around you through the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, also known as forest bathing. SUNRISE NATURE HIKE Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle Winter is slowly winding down. Red-winged blackbirds are starting to return, skunk cabbages are poking through the ice, and the Earth is starting to awaken from her long sleep. CARBS ON THE CAMPFIRE Rolling Hills County Park | Vehicle Entry Fee Required Naturalist, Shawn Severance Spruce up your campfire cooking skills for the spring season through practice. In this program, Parks Naturalist Shawn will demonstrate how to cook an energy-sustaining meal with no cookware at all. Techniques for Ash-baked pita bread and baked potatoes will be demonstrated. BIRDING BASICS Leonard Preserve | 12 Birders | Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring The magic of birds is they seem to be everywhere you go. Local parks, backyards, apartment balcony railings, quiet forests, and city streets. Birding can be enjoyed just about anywhere, but with so many species it can seem like a daunting hobby. Learn tricks to identifying birds based on habitat, markings, and sounds. We’ll also discuss what to look for in binoculars. No equipment needed. We will have basic binoculars for you to use. TIMBERDOODLE TUMBLE Leonard Preserve | 15 Birders | Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring As the sunsets over open fields experience the delightful aerial display of the American Woodcock, or timberdoodle as some call it. During spring nights the males perform an elaborate routine to impress females, providing a quirky sign of spring that you don’t want to miss! SENIOR NATURALIST: VERNAL POOLS Scio Woods Preserve | Ages 55+ | Naturalist, Elle Bogle Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that fill with water in Spring and explode with life. They’re the breeding ground for several species of amphibians as well as hundreds of aquatic macroinvertebrates. We will use dip nets and buckets to examine tiny creatures from frogs to fairy shrimp, and learn to identify the aquatic dwellers of these remarkable ecosystems hidden beneath the smooth water of leafy, woodland pools. Spend the morning connecting with the woods, wetlands, and all the spring flowers and discover the joy and tranquility of simple immersion in nature. SUNRISE HIKE Draper-Houston Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle The preserve’s woodlands are exploding with wildflowers and the many trees are starting to burst forth in spring leaves. Birds are migrating north again, and early butterflies can be spotted. We will hike in both lowland and upland habitats near the river and explore the abundant beauty that abounds. HECKUVA HIKE Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve | 12 Hikers State Park Pass Req. | Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring We’ll trek around 5.5 miles of trail as we wander through a mix of fields, forests, and lakeside. This wellness and fitness hike provides a fairly level terrain with a couple steep hills to get the heart pumping. SPRING CLEANSING TEAS County Farm Park - Medford Pavilion | Naturalist, Shawn Severance Do you feel like a hibernating bear when emerging from winter? On this hike we will learn about the wild plants that can energize and give you vitality during this time of growth and renewal and share a cup of tea while listening to birdsong. SENIOR NATURALIST: SNAKES Brauer Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle Snakes are one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet, inspiring fear instead of the love they deserve. Michigan is home to 18 different species of these secretive reptiles, only one of which is venomous.
