Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

YOGA IN THE PARK - SUMMER YOGA PACKAGE

Mondays, June 6 - August 29 (no class July 4) | 6pm - 7pm | $120 Slow flow yoga class, all levels welcome, no experience necessary. Emphasis is placed on core strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, and breath control. Cannot commit to three months of yoga? Check out our Summer 1 (June 6 - July 18; $75), Summer 2 (July 25 - Aug 29; $75) yoga registration options. This package includes both Summer 1 and Summer 2 in-person/virtual yoga. In person yoga will be held here in the park. If you would rather do yoga virtually then Zoom with us. The time and day are the same. If weather is not favorable in-person yoga may be substituted for virtual session for that day only. Pre-registration required. Registration # IL441104.

ARCHERY

June 10 | 6pm - 7pm & 7pm - 8pm | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members This introductory program to archery covers safety and basic shooting skills. All archery equipment is provided, and no prior archery experience is required. Families will be positioned in their household and in a lane to shoot. Three families per 45-minute session. Check in at the Beach Center Parking Lot. Registration # IL461100.

DISC GOLF GLOW NIGHTS

June 10, July 8, Aug 12 | 9pm - Midnight | $5 per Night or Free for an Annual Bag Tag Holders Come join us for Disc Golf Glow Nights at the park. Starting in April and continuing through September, meeting the second Friday of the month, times varying based on sunset. We will illuminate our disc golf baskets 1-18 for night play. This is the only time each month that you can disc golf in the park after dark. Bring your own glow discs, glow tape, and glow lights for your discs. There is walk up registration. Registration # IL451100.

FAIRY DOORS

June 24 | 6pm - 8pm | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Create special homes for small creatures! Start by decorating a fairy door to take home with you to create a fairy home at your own house. Then explore using materials with the nature around you to build a new Fairy home. Supplies will be provided as well as a section of the woods for you and your family to build a Fairy home for the park fairies. Check in will be at the Independence Woods Pavilion. SPECIAL NEEDS SPLASH DAY

July 22 | 6pm - 8pm | $4/Resident & $5/Non-Resident Blue Heron Bay Spray Park will be staying open exclusively for children with special needs and their families to experience the splash pad in a stress-free and relaxed environment. Concessions will be open until 7pm if your family would like to purchase food. Blue Heron Bay will be closing to the general public at 6pm. Pre-register with no fee attached online at parksonline.ewashtenaw.org. Registration # IL461100.

ROCK PAINTING

July 22 | 6pm - 8pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Come join us for an evening of creativity! We will have supplies set up for you and your family to paint rocks that can become added color in our park or in your neighborhood. Share some positivity and smiles while getting out of the house and into nature! We would love to see your art at Independence Lake County Park! Check in at Beach Center Pavilion. STARGAZING AND PERSEIDS

Aug 12 | 9pm - 1am | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Enjoy a night under the summer stars! We’ll bask in the glow of the full moon, gaze upon constellations, and possibly see “shooting stars” from the Perseid Meteor Shower. Park Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring, will be walking around during the evening to point out various night sky objects. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs! Plans are in place for a small fire and s’mores. If it ends up being a cloudy night, then we will go on a creatures of the night hike. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

FAMILY BOARD GAME NIGHT

Aug 26 | 6pm - 8pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Although board games can be planned any time, coming for a family fun filled night of board games under our beautifully lit pavilion is a sure-fire way for the whole family to have fun and create new memories. A Varity of board and card games will be laid out for your family to choose from. Refreshments and treats will be provided. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

RIVER WALKING

Mon - Sun, May 31 - Aug 28 | 10:30am - 11:30am | $4 Drop In or $60 Punch Card (20 visits) Now 7 days/week! Enjoy a low-impact workout while walking in the Lazy River! River Walking increases your blood flow and warms your muscles and joints. An easy-going exercise for those who enjoy the outdoors. Open to adults only (18 years and older), 16 or 17 years old if accompanied by an adult. Drop-In ONLY, pre-registration is not available.

CAMPFIRE COOKING ON A STICK

June 5 | 1pm - 4pm | $5/Person From Shish Kabab to Starburst, anything that won’t fall apart when cooked on a stick, can be cooked on a stick over an open flame. Parks Naturalist Shawn will teach you how to quickly light your own cooking fire, and demonstrate her timetested S’mores technique. Please bring whatever creative stick-cooking ingredients you would like to prepare for yourself. Ingredients for a S’mores Bar will be provided. Registration opens April 24. July 30 | 8pm - 10pm | $3/Person Celebrate National Moth Week with a night hike at Rolling Hills! Moths are amazing, beautiful and important animals that we usually overlook because we are sleeping when they are active. Stay up late with Parks Naturalist Shawn Severance and observe moths directly as we attract them with lights and moth bait and document their diversity. Registration opens June 12. SPECIAL NEEDS SWIM DAY

Aug 20 | 10am - Noon | $11/Person (Resident), $13/Person (Non-Residents), Free/Under 36” This event provides individuals with special needs and their families an opportunity to enjoy early access to the water park in a safe, judgment free environment. With the purchase of daily admission, families will be allowed access to the water park beginning at 10am (2 hours before the general public). Special needs tubes are available at any time at the water park office. The Lazy River will not be open until 11:30am. Tickets can be purchased at the event in person or online at parksonline.ewashtenaw.org.

HIKING TO THE FAR CORNERS! Sharon Short Hills Preserve - Hashley Road | Naturalist, Faye Stoner Join guest naturalist Faye Stoner for a hike to visit the far western portions of this interesting preserve. We will talk about geology, botany, birds and stewardship as we explore “off the trail” to enjoy this lovely area. Note: terrain is quite hilly! Space is limited to 12 people. MINDFULNESS HIKE Dominican Meadows Preserve | 15 Hikers When the sun is warm but not hot and the grass is still stippled with dew, Mother Nature greets us with a loving embrace. We can feel it in the wind, see it in the flowers, and hear it in the birdsongs. Join naturalist Elle Bogle and mindfulness instructor Julie Woodward for a morning meditative hike to connect with the serenity of the natural world around us. We will use dip nets and seine nets to catch and identify macroinvertebrates, fish, and all other creek dwellers, all while learning about the importance of these waterways. West Lake Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle The fields of West Lake are alive with sounds of music and the musicians are all members of the insect order orthoptera. These creatures are known for long legs giving them the ability to jump, stiff wings able to fold against their bodies, and the songs created by rubbing their wings against each other or against their legs.
