Four people, including Wise County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson, died in a head-on collision just south of Decatur Saturday evening.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper William Cooper said Johnson was driving her Volkswagen Passat at a high rate of speed southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. 81/287 when she struck a northbound Chevy Trailblazer, killing three adults in that vehicle.

Three of the four people who died in a horrific wreck south of Decatur Saturday were not from Wise County.

But the family had local ties.

Several area truck drivers and others in related businesses knew Juan Jose Rios, 31, of Quanah.

“That guy would give you the shirt off his back,” said Chris Fletcher of Slidell.

Johnson: Elected official known for caring heart

Continued from page 1A Johnson had been a resident of Wise County since she was a child, attending Alvord schools from junior high until graduation.

Precinct 3 Constable Doug Parr, Johnson’s classmate and close friend in school, described her as “kind hearted” and a “sweet person.”

“She was a great friend — someone you could trust and depend on,” Parr said. “But she also had a mean streak. She was probably as ornery as I was. We loved pulling pranks and playing games on people.”

Among their favorite pranks was a bit of photo altering in yearbook class.

Johnson loved to laugh, Parr said, and would always have a smile on her face even when something was bothering her.

While in college, Johnson began working for the Denton County Sheriff’s Department, first as a community relations director. She later earned her peace officer’s license to teach the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in local schools.

Upon graduation with a degree in criminal justice, Johnson began working for her local justice of the peace.

After the birth of her first son, she became a stay-at-home mom and later started a business marketing her invention: Tack Wipes, an olive-oil-based tack and leather cleaner.

For years, Johnson participated in various community organizations such as youth groups, PTO and Junior Achievement.

In 2006, she made her first run for office as a Republican candidate for Precinct 2 justice of the peace, winning election that November.

Just a month after her election, she became very ill and was eventually diagnosed with type I

diabetes. Her pancreas had shut down, and she became dependent on insulin with an insulin pump.

That’s when Johnson became a vocal proponent of diabetes awareness and a mentor local youths with diabetes.

“The more you share … it’s a comfort to others. To let them know you can do it. It’s not the easiest, but it can be managed,” Johnson said of diabetes education in a Wise County Messenger article in November 2012.

In 2011, Johnson visited Washington, D.C., and participated in the American Diabetes Association Summit, Call to Congress.

Johnson was re-elected as justice of the peace in 2011 and filed to serve another term last November. She did not draw a Democratic opponent and would have started her third term next January.

Her office is located at the Wise County Law Enforcement Center, which also houses the county jail and Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff David Walker said she was like family to everyone there.

Sitting just outside Johnson’s office window — adorned with a couple of memorial bouquets of flowers and a poem displayed on a counter — Walker recalled Monday one regular act of giving she would show to both her staff and the Sheriff’s Office staff.

“You know one of the things we won’t hear on the intercom every Friday morning around 8:30 is, “Judge Johnson has breakfast in her office.” I’d always go in there and say, ‘I’m trying to lose weight.’

Of course, she had donuts, and I never said no to the donuts,” Walker said with a laugh.

As with any traumatic event, such as an officer-involved shooting or the unexpected loss of a co-worker, a counselor will be made available to anyone who needs to talk, Walker said.

“My little brother moved to DHS his freshman year. He is really into football, and Judge Johnson always made us feel welcome at the games. She would sit next to my mom and I while we cheered our boys along.

I can’t imagine how much pain her family must feel right now.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.”

“Whatever the case may be, Terri was always one of the first people to jump in and say, ‘What can we do to help?’ She was just that way,” he said.

ganized a drive to send supplies to troops in Iraq. Walker said so many items were collected, “I thought we were going to have to get a U-Haul to get all the stuff out of here.”

Perhaps the most difficult task for Walker will be having to explain to his 4-year-old daughter why “Ms. Terri” can no longer play with her.

“My daughter, she’ll come in the back door of my office and she’ll run straight for ‘Ms. Terri’s’ office,” he said. “And if you can’t find my daughter running around here, you can go to Terri’s office and she’s sitting in Terri’s lap. And they have printed some sort of coloring deal, probably Dora (the Explorer), and they’re talking about coloring or whatnot.”

Johnson leaves behind a husband and two sons. The family issued a statement on Terri’s death which reads, in part: “We appreciate the outpouring of love from the community Terri served. We ask for your continued prayers for not only our loss, but for the friends and family of all those who died.”

The accident happened about a quarter-mile north of the crossover at County Road 4228 near National Ropers Supply (NRS) Trailers at 5:52 p.m.

What caused Johnson to be traveling in the wrong lane of traffic is still unclear and might remain so until investigators receive the results of blood samples taken at the scene.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mandy Hays, who pronounced all four adult victims dead at the scene, said investigators found no evidence that would make them suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash at this time.

It is possible that Johnson, who was diabetic, had some sort of medical issue while driving, which led to the accident, Cooper said.

The toxicology report would include electrolyte levels — which could indicate blood sugar information at the time of the wreck.

Reckless driver calls The Wise County Sheriff ’s Department received multiple calls from motorists who reported what they believed to be an intoxicated driver, according to call sheets and 911 recordings obtained through an open records request by the Wise County Messenger.

The first call came in at 5:45 p.m. from around the rest area on U.S. 81/287 three miles north of Decatur. The caller stated that for “three or four miles” he had seen Johnson’s car driving shoulder to shoulder southbound in the

southbound lanes of the highway.

Approximately five minutes later, the Sheriff ’s Office received a call from a driver passing Karl Klement Ford, on the south side of Decatur, who also reported a possible intoxicated driver. Seconds after stating he was passing the car dealership, the caller said “he (Johnson) almost hit someone,” and then he said the vehicle was driving in the grass in the median.

Doug Baldwin, a salesman at Karl Klement Ford, was at the crossover near the dealership and was in the vehicle the caller reported was nearly hit.

He said he heard a “kaplump, kaplump” sound, which was apparently Johnson running over a piece of tire rubber in the road, just before she whizzed by, nearly clipping the back of his Ford Escape. Johnson’s car entered the median at that crossover and continued driving in the median for approximately 18 seconds, according to the 911 caller account.

Baldwin said he watched Johnson travel straight down the median of the highway and gradually come up out of a culvert toward the northbound lanes.

Although Baldwin didn’t see exactly where Johnson left the median, it appears she entered the northbound lanes just north of the U.S. 81/287 Business intersection, where flashing lights are located.

For the next two minutes, dispatchers began receiving numerous 911 calls about a wrong-way driver.

DECATUR

Scene of a nightmare Former Bridgeport resident Ashley Kramer was northbound on U.S. 81/287 when she saw something unusual. A car appeared to be headed the wrong way toward her and other northbound vehicles.

She thought perhaps the car was actually on a side road — but as she got closer, Kramer realized the seriousness of the situation.

She told her 10-yearold and 6-year-old sons, who had been asleep, to duck and not look, and she quickly headed for the outside shoulder.

Kramer said she then witnessed what she could only describe as “horrific.”

“It looked like an explosion,” she said. “The Trailblazer flew 10 or 15 feet up into the air. Pieces flew everywhere.”

The crash took place in the inside lane. Cooper said no tire marks were found on the pavement, which would indicate neither vehicle applied its brakes. He estimated both were going highway speed, which would have been 60 to 70 miles per hour, when they collided.

Kramer said she was just two to four car lengths behind the crash. She told her two boys to stay in the car while she called 911 and began approaching the scene.

About that time, Kramer said a man who identified himself as an emergency medical technician from Houston came running up to the scene from the southbound lane of the highway.

He began checking on the victims in the Trailblazer.

you’ve got a good friend, you know it,” Fletcher said. “And I knew I had a good friend in him. He was always willing to help ... He has a history with this county.”

Through the years, Fletcher and a group of friends have planned truck show fundraisers for people in need in the community.

Every time they reached out to Rios and his boss, David Sparkman, they were willing to help.

“When we did the truck show for Jackie Murphree in 2008, [Rios] showed up before daylight and gave a generous donation,” Fletcher said. “They really helped somebody down here out. That’s how they were with everything.

He didn’t know Jackie from Adam, but he wanted to help.

And he did.

“Juan helps everybody. Let’s help him.”

While Fletcher intends to plan some kind of fundraiser, for the time being he asks for prayers for

“It was clear to me without even having to go up and check Mrs. Johnson that she was gone,” Kramer said, although she went up to her anyway to confirm.

Kramer said the EMT quickly determined the three adults in the Trailblazer were also dead.

Cooper identified them as the driver, Juan Jose Rios, 31, of Quanah; and two passengers, Amy Dee Culwell, 35, of Chillicothe and Sherry Ann Rios, 50, of Quanah.

Juan and Amy’s 4-yearold daughter, Taylee, was still alive although injured and partially ejected from the SUV. The EMT got her out of the vehicle and handed her to Kramer.

“I went and got my son’s tiger blanket and wrapped her in it,” Kramer said.

and tried to distract the child from the chaos by playing games with her on a phone.

Call sheet records indicate medics arrived on the scene less than three minutes after the accident was reported. A CareFlite helicopter was requested for Taylee, who had serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to Cooper. She was flown to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

As officers and more medics began to arrive and take over Taylee’s care, Kramer said it was then she sat down and let the tears flow.

She began to ask herself if she could have done anything different to warn Rios of the approaching car that she saw, but that he apparently did not.

She took some comfort from seeing the quick response of people who came running to help strangers

in need.

“It was amazing how many truck drivers jumped out with extinguishers.

They used them on the Trailblazer, which was on fire. It was just the most amazing thing I’d ever seen — the good in people you don’t get to see every day,” Kramer said.

Two days after the accident, on Monday, Kramer said her family was still trying to cope with what they had witnessed.

“My kiddos refuse to sleep in their own beds,” she said, adding that her boys want to stay close by her side.

The wreck shut down all northbound traffic on U.S. 81/287, and traffic was eventually rerouted at Farm Road 407 to Farm Road 2264. The road remained closed for about four hours.

“Juan Rios Sr. lost his wife and son. The little girl lost her mom and dad and a grandmother.

“I worry about that little girl,” he continued. “She wants her mom and dad. Hell, as old as I am, if something goes wrong, I want my mom and dad. It’s just heartbreaking.”

But as difficult as it is to grasp the reality, Fletcher is confident people will rally to help Rios’ surviving family members.

“I can’t believe he’s gone; it’s unreal,” he said. “But I know it will all work out. They’ve got good friends. And I believe that all the people that Juan helped out will now help him and his family.”

In addition to doing business with several local truck drivers, he collaborated with them for charitable events.

That selflessness and generosity are what best characterized the man Fletcher has known for more than a dozen years. He considers him a good friend.

Johnson was running unopposed in November’s election, and the local Republican Executive Committee will be tasked with naming a candidate to replace her.

Wise County Republican Party Chair Allen Williamson said the committee will choose someone to replace Johnson on the ballot, but the issue won’t be discussed for some time.

“We have not even considered anything at this point,” he said.

“We’re all still in a state of shock, grief and disbelief.”

Election Administrator Lannie Noble said the party has until Aug. 25 to name a replacement.

The committee can’t make a selection until after the primary election results are finalized by the state June 16.

OPINION

We could all learn from Johnson’s legacy of service

Community is a wonderful thing. It lifts us up when we need encouragement, it shares in celebrating our joys and it comforts us when we suffer the pain of loss.

I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of this community for close to 14 years now.

During that time, I’ve gotten to know many people who have touched my life in one way or another.

That’s what made Saturday one of the hardest days to be a journalist.

I had the solemn, yet extremely important, task of covering the accident that killed four people — including Terri Johnson.

I don’t want to use this space to dwell on any more details of that devastating event. Instead, I’d like to talk about the Terri Johnson I knew.

I didn’t know her as well as many in Wise County. I

didn’t grow up around here like she did. But in the many times I did see her and KNOX speak to her through the course of reporting, I was able to see she was not only a remarkable elected official, but also a remarkable member of that Wise County community.

I suppose I met her not long after she was elected justice of the peace for Precinct 2 in 2006. Many of our interactions came in situations similar to the one Saturday. Justices of the peace have, among their many duties, the job of pronouncing people dead at accident scenes and possibly ordering autopsies or blood tests. In fact, now that I think about it, I probably first talked to her at the scene of a fatal accident on Farm Road 51 North of Decatur.

It was a small gesture that made a lasting impression.

She asked if I needed anything.

Terri understood I was there to do a job just like she was, and she offered to help me without me even having to ask. I remember she was extremely professional in that situation as she gave me all the information she could. She told me if I needed anything else, just let her know.

At other times, I’d talk to her on the phone or stop by with an open records request — usually for an arrest warrant affidavit for some criminal case. Without fail, Terri would always help me with my request right away.

She had a knack for making you feel you were the most important person, or that the requested task was immediately at the top of her priority list.

Sometimes if I had a question about a criminal

case or a warrant, and I didn’t know which of the four justice of the peace courts I needed to contact, I’d call her first. If she didn’t know the answer, she’d offer to make a few calls and get back with me.

She must have had a ton of work on her plate, and yet it would usually only be 10 or 15 minutes before she was calling me back with the information I had requested.

She seemed to love helping people directly. If there was any way possible, she probably would have preferred to talk personally to everyone who called her office. But when it became obvious she couldn’t, she sounded almost apologetic in a recorded message you heard when you called: “I just want you to know, I hate automated answering machines as well, but due to the high volume of calls to this office, I feel it is a necessary evil ...” she said before naming off the dif-

ferent extensions to choose from.

Saturday’s wreck left me stunned, drawn to my computer, hoping to find comfort by getting some words out of my head. I didn’t know how or where to start in trying to adequately describe who Terri was. The first sentence I typed on Sunday was, “As an elected official, she was a servant rather than a politician.”

I only knew Terri from her work as an elected official — but I realized during Monday night’s candlelight vigil at First Baptist Church in Decatur that the word “servant” applied to other areas of her life as well.

The speakers and others who filled out cards with their thoughts, time after time described her as a servant or a servant leader.

In fact, if it had been any other Monday night, Terri would have been cooking and serving up food for the many Fellowship of Christian Athletes members who

were there.

As I headed into work Monday, thinking about the enormous task in front of me of telling both the story of the accident and a little bit about who Terri was, I drove through a local eatery for some breakfast. I tried to hand the server the money, but she just gave me my food and informed me that the gentleman in line in front of me had paid for my meal.

I couldn’t help but smile, and think about how much Terri would have approved of the kind gesture. It’s something she would have done, if she’d been there.

If we are looking for a way to honor her memory, perhaps those small, random acts of service to others are what Terri would recommend.

Just like her, they leave a lasting impression.

Texas officials jump into Red River boundary case

BY ED STERLING When a temperamental river with mud banks and sand bars defines the border between two states or two countries, there’s a natural potential for conflict between humans on both sides of it.

And so, a 140-acre plot of land along the Red River border between Texas and Oklahoma became a growing news topic last week.

That particular plot is within some 90,000 acres of land along a 116-mile stretch of the river that has some people worried about federal tinkering with border.

While the U.S. Bureau of Land Management stated it is not expanding federal holdings along the river and is not involved in litigation between two landowners vying for the 140 acres, a lineup of lawmakers floated statements on the issue.

Gov. Rick Perry called

what was going on a federal land grab. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said what the BLM is doing makes his blood boil. Attorney General Greg Abbott blasted what he termed a “potential seizure of land that rightfully belongs to Texas landowners.” Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples urged the BLM “to immediately cease any attempt to seize private lands from Texas citizens.”

U.S. Congressional District 13 Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Amarillo), whose sprawling district includes those 116 miles, wrote to the BLM in January to head off the threat of potential losses to Texas landowners. In a reply to Thornberry dated March 17, a BLM official wrote “… there are no claims to Federal land south of the gradient bank of the river, and no claims to Federal land in the State of Texas

as defined by multiple rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The letter to Thornberry, signed by Steven G. Tryon of the BLM’s Tulsa, Okla., field office, went on to state that the agency’s short-term goals involve installing signs in a certain previously surveyed area, cleaning up federal land that is already charted, checking the land to see that the signs remain in place and to work with an Oklahoma state agency to plan the cleanup of oil field equipment “dated back to the 1910s and 1920s” on federal land in Oklahoma that is north of Burkburnett.

Also on the subject of land and water, U.S. Drought Monitor statistics released April 24 show Hardeman, Wilbarger and Wichita counties and part of Clay County, all of which border the Red River along the 116

miles mentioned previously are in exceptional drought.

Also in exception drought are the across-the-river Oklahoma counties of Harmon, Jackson, Tillman and part of Cotton County.

Panel to study coastal barriers House Speaker Joe Straus on April 25 named 11 legislators to the Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System.

Straus said the committee will study the effects of recent changes made to the Texas Open Beaches Act, a law that grants the public a free and unrestricted right to access state-owned beaches and a right to use any public beach extending from the line of mean low tide to the line of vegetation bordering the Gulf of Mexico.

House Bill 3459, signed into law last year, created

a process allowing the land commissioner to suspend the designation of a new line of vegetation for three years. The committee also will examine the feasibility and desirability of maintaining a coastal barrier system in Texas and of authorizing coastal property owners to grant easements to governmental entities to build and maintain stabilized dunes, according to the Speaker’s statement.

Unemployment rate drops Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent in March, down two-tenths of a percentage point from February’s rate of 5.7 percent, Texas Workforce Commission announced April 18.

Employers added 9,100 jobs in March for a total of 310,000 jobs added over the year, and the annual growth rate for total nonag-

ricultural employment has remained at or above 2.6 percent since January 2012, the agency said.

Runoffs set for May 27 April 28 was the last day to register to vote in the May 27 primary runoff elections. According to the Secretary of State’s Elections Division, “If a voter voted in the primary election, the voter must vote in the same political party runoff election.

If a voter did not vote in the primary election, the voter may still vote in the runoff election and for the party of their choice. Early voting begins May 19 and ends on May 23. During early voting, you may vote at any polling location in your county.”

Funeral is 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the First Baptist Church in Decatur with Pastor Ken May officiating.

Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m.

Terri was born Oct. 29, 1973, in Fort Worth to Kenny Taylor and Carol Miller. She married Craig Douglas Johnson Aug. 12, 1995, in Denton.

Terri began her career in public service in 1992, working as community relations director with the Denton County Sheriff’s Department. She later earned her peace officer’s license and

taught Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) in Denton C o u n t y schools. She JOHNSON was named DARE Officer of the Year in 1996.

After earning a degree in criminal justice, Johnson worked part time for her local justice of the peace and began a lifelong love of public service and helping youth.

While a stay-at-home mom, she invented and marketed a product to clean up tack for horse owners.

After her children started school, Terri ran for justice of the peace in Wise County Precinct 2 and was elected.

She was sworn into office Jan.

1, 2007, and was re-elected in 2011. She served as secretary for the Texas Justice Court Judges Association and was a member of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Criminal Justice and Juvenile Grant Review boards.

She was also a member and volunteer for the American Diabetes Association, a teacher for Junior Achievement and a mentor for Teen Court and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Decatur High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur.

Her hobbies included shooting sporting clays, baking, traveling and being a part of all the events her two boys were involved in.

She is survived by her hus-

Floyd Lee Ford Floyd Lee Ford, 65, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, in Decatur.

Funeral was April 29 at White Family Funeral Home in Bowie, and burial followed at Newport Cemetery.

Floyd was born Jan. 2, 1949, in Newport to Foy and Janie (Hicks) Ford. He graduated from Bowie High School in 1967 and attended Ranger Junior College for two years. He was an avid bow hunter and enjoyed playing golf.

Floyd worked for several companies in Wise County, including Trinity Rock Crusher Co., Brazos Gas and Purvis Bearing. He was working for Targa Resources in Chico at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Foy and Janie Ford; son Floyd Alan Ford;

Billy H. “Frog” Godbey, 71, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at his home in Newark.

City tightening belt as cash flow slows

Don’t look for any spending sprees from the city of Decatur between now and the end of the fiscal year.

Finance Director Brad Burnett told city council members Monday that money will be tight for the rest of the budget year as the city deals with lower-thanexpected revenue.

“Basically, it seems like economic growth has slowed and we just have fewer resources available this year than last year,” he said. His report came during a work session prior to Monday evening’s council meeting.

Burnett said revenues compared to the budget are fine — but a comparison to last year shows the city’s income is down by $22,000 from 2013.

He said municipal court income is down $17,000, the Civic Center is down $4,000, sales tax income is $19,000 less, the hotel occupancy tax is yielding $22,000 less and cemetery income is off by $6,000.

There are a few bright spots. Revenue is up by $19,000 in building permits and $9,000 in property taxes — but the combined total of 43 revenue accounts leaves the city with $22,710 less than last year.

“Our mid-year results comparison to budget doesn’t send up many red

flags,” Burnett said. “However, when we compare to last year’s results, we have expended $105,000 more this year.

“With the exception of the airport, planning, Civic Center, inspections and emergency management, every department has spent more this year than last year.”

He said the answer is to ask each city department to watch expenses carefully and try to be below budget by the time the fiscal year ends at the end of September.

“Unless something significant happens on the revenue side, we’re going to ask our departments to be below budget on expenses,” he said. “If we’re going to be below budget on revenue, we need to be below budget on expenses, too.”

Water fund in same situation Burnett said the city’s water fund, which has an independent budget, is also tight right now.

“Probably the most important indicator is cash,” he said. “At the end of March, we had $163,000 less than last year and $65,000 less than March 2012. We need to watch this closely.”

Decatur is facing the same problem Fort Worth and other area cities face: water conservation has led to reduced water use, which has reduced income significantly. Meanwhile, fixed costs — the debt

incurred when water plants were built and upgraded — as well as other operating costs, have not declined.

City manager Brett Shannon said Tarrant Regional Water District recently raised the cost of raw water by 11 cents per 1,000 gallons — more than a 10 percent hike — and the array of permitting fees Decatur has to pay the state of Texas have also risen.

“It’s chemicals, it’s electricity — and on top of that, people are not consuming as much water as they used to,” he said. “It’s never popular when you ask people to conserve, then you go up on the rate.”

But that, he said, is exactly what Decatur may have to do. He said several staff members will be exploring that option over the next few months and will come back to the council with a recommendation.

Public Works Director Earl Smith noted that Lake Bridgeport, the city’s water source, is 21.5 feet low, and rainfall this year was about half of normal through March. The city’s raw water treatment plant is processing about a million gallons a day — well below last year’s for all three months so far in 2014.

Action items go quickly After the workshop presentations, the few action items on the council’s budget were disposed of quickly.

The council: approved an amendment to the city’s comprehensive master plan to change just over four acres along U.S. Highway 81/287 Business, alongside the U.S. Forest Service, Karl Klement Motors and the skating rink, from office and high-density residential to commercial; approved on first reading rezoning that property from multi-family residential to commercial; proclaimed May 9 as Butterfield Stage Days Karl Klement Ram PRCA Rodeo Pink Night and encouraged everyone to wear pink that day; approved a final report on the city’s Sanitary Sewer Overflow Initiative — a five year project to help the city avoid a penalty to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ); approved an interlocal agreement to let the Decatur Police Department purchase uniforms through a cooperative with the City of Frisco; reappointed Gary Cocanougher and Dwight Reeves to two-year terms on the Water District board, with councilmember Susan Cocanougher abstaining; and got an update from Police Chief Rex Hoskins on the progress of the city’s “reverse 9-1-1” notification system and possible costs of installing additional civil defense warning sirens.

A Decatur couple lost not only their home, but also two pets in a house fire Tuesday morning.

Just before 11 a.m., a neighbor called 911 after hearing a hissing noise and then an explosion at 141 Mesa Ridge, which is southeast of Decatur. He looked across his yard to see the back side of Jason and Sherry Smith’s home engulfed in flames.

The couple was not home, but three dogs were inside the house. A Wise County sheriff’s deputy rescued one dog, but the smoke and heat threatened to overwhelm him, preventing the rescue of the other two animals.

Four other dogs that were in the yard survived the fire, as well as two cats.

Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said the cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation. He said the explosion was a propane bottle on the couple’s grill.

Although some items in the home may be salvage-

able, the structure is a total loss. Beard said the couple has insurance, and they plan to stay with family members who live in the neighborhood.

They declined Red Cross assistance.

East Wise, Decatur and Rhome fire departments were called to the scene, as well as Wise County medics and Rescue 1.

The Boyd Volunteer Fire Department hopes they will come — and not just the public, this Saturday, to an open house at their new fire station.

They hope the facility can help rekindle some interest in volunteer firefighting in the growing south Wise County community.

Randy Ingram, ESD No. 1 Chief, is proud of the new fire hall — but he’s truly excited about the prospect of staffing it with well-trained, wellequipped firefighters who respond and know what to do in any kind of emergency.

This is the second time Ingram, a veteran professional firefighter who retired from Arlington FD in 2006, has helped a rural fire district move into a new facility. He did the same thing in Parker County for the Springtown and LaJunta fire departments.

But training — not building — is his real passion.

School gets new principal Paradise Intermediate School will have new leadership next year, as school counselor Kristin Gage will take over as principal.

The school board held a special meeting Monday night to make the selection. They unanimously

agreed to give her a twoyear contract.

Gage has been in education for 19 years, 15 of them in PISD. The district began searching for a new intermediate school principal earlier this month when

current principal Terry McCutchen announced his resignation.

According to Superintendent Monty Chapman and McCutchen, he was leaving PISD for personal reasons and had not yet lined up another job.

“They built houses and businesses back then to last a long time — you still see some of them standing in downtowns everywhere. Nowadays, they build stuff out of plastics and synthetics and rubber — it’s a totally different environment. It’s hotter, and it’s more dangerous.”

He said he understands that volunteers do not have unlimited time for training.

“I’m trying to work them towards some certification levels — not only in fire, but also in EMS,” he said, noting that of the 1,000 or so calls

the department receives in a year, 75 percent are EMS calls.

Boyd VFD is a certified first-responder and works “really well” with Wise County EMS, whose operation is just across the street. They have the same medical director and use the same set of protocols. Ingram just wishes he had more firefighters certified as EMTs. “It takes a lot to get it, and sometimes they just can’t take off work,” he said. “When you put them through this type of training, and you document it and you get them

certification, it tells me that they’re safer, they’re smarter, they’re more effective and they’re more efficient for the taxpayer.”

The bottom line is not only public safety, but also the safety of the firefighters themselves.

“I want them to be safe,” Ingram said. “I want everybody to go home. The way they can do that — and there are no guarantees — but the way to give them a shot at it is to make sure they’re trained correctly.

“Fire doesn’t care if you get a paycheck or not.”

Judge McElhaney named Official of the Year

Former Wise County Judge Bill McElhaney was posthumously named County Official of the Year April 24 by the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, a 118-county subregion of the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas (CJCAT).

“Judge McElhaney was a true leader amongst county judges,” said West Texas Association President Susan Redford, Ector County judge. “His integrity, dedication and humor endeared him to all who had the opportunity to get to know him.

“He was a true asset to the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association and a person whom I admired greatly,” Redford said.

Some 250 county officials and guests honored Kim McElhaney at the association’s annual conference in San Angelo as she accepted the award on behalf of her late husband.

Judge McElhaney died Oct. 14, 2013, at the age

of 67 after collapsing at a commissioners court meeting. He was serving his second term as county judge.

“Billy started and ended his political career in the Wise County courthouse,” Kim McElhaney told the crowd following a standing ovation. “Billy was an honorable man who valued integrity, honesty and a hard day’s work. He was a man of humor who loved his life; he never quit laughing and smiling.

“Billy was a champion, and champions work until they get it right,” she continued. “Billy died in the Wise County courthouse where he loved to be, fighting for truth, liberty and justice.”

Judge McElhaney dedicated 26 years of his life to his community in the form of government/public service. He served on multiple boards and associations, and at the time of his passing was vice president of the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

Citizen tip leads to arrests

A tip from a citizen led to the arrest of two people in Bridgeport Monday morning, including one man who had eluded police on several occasions.

Assistant Police Chief Steve Stanford said Darell Lopez, 46, and Cecilio Rodriguez, 33, were apprehended at an apartment in the 400 block of Turkey Creek.

The duo were booked into Wise County Jail. Lopez was charged with disorderly conduct and a parole violation, and Rodriguez was charged with failure to appear, Bridgeport Municipal Court, and driving while license was invalid. Both had been arrested multiple times, according to the Wise County Jail website.

Lopez remains in jail on the felony charge and has a $500 bond for the disorderly conduct charge. Rodriguez posted bond and was released.

“We had gotten several complaints in this area the last few weeks,” Stanford said.

Original information reported to police indicated that there were eight or nine people “living in the apartment and doing drugs.” Stanford said over the course of the investigation they learned that Lopez had an outstanding felony warrant for Texas Pardon and Parole and that he was one of the residents.

Stanford said it was confirmed through several different sources that Lopez was living at the apartment, and the most recent tip included information as to how Lopez had eluded officers in the past.

“Anytime the police would go to the front door, he would go to the back porch, a twostory balcony, and shimmy down a rope he had hanging there and take off running,” Stanford said. Early Monday morning officers staged at the front and the back of the apartment building.

“We knocked and knocked and knocked for five minutes,” Stanford said. “We made an

announcement it was the police department, at which time officers were staged in the RODRIGUEZ back, and sure enough, here he comes out the back.

“He was about to come over the balcony when he saw us.”

Lopez went back inside the apartment at which time the officers at the front door entered the apartment and placed him under arrest with no issues.

Stanford said they later found Rodriguez asleep in the apartment. The assistant chief said he was also “wanted” and had a small amount of marijuana in his possession.

Stanford said this had

been a “problem area” for the last six months. Officers had been routinely patrolling and LOPEZ had made some arrests in other apartments.

“We’d received various bits of information, but this was different in that we had some great information that ended up panning out,” he said.

Stanford said Lopez has a history of fleeing police.

“We’ve chased him several times,” he said. “I think it’s great that a citizen stepped up and wanted to improve the quality of life in their neighborhood.”

Stanford said the tip and arrests that followed reinforce the department’s motto:

The blue and green Eaton Eagles will soar against their opponents come 2015.

At the recommendation of a committee of students and parents, the mascot of Northwest ISD’s third comprehensive high school, V.R. Eaton High School, will be the Eagles and the color scheme blue and green.

A committee of 16 students from each of the three middle schools that will feed into the high school — Tidwell, Wilson and Chisholm Trail middle schools — compiled a list of 16 mascots and color schemes, which was narrowed to two by a panel of parents.

All sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the three middle schools voted on the two options, and the prevailing recommendation was presented to the board at its meeting Monday.

“One of the kids said, ‘We want to win. And not just in athletics. But we want a school that is known to be a winner in academics, in athletics, how they embrace their peers, how they’re welcoming,’” said Damon Edwards, executive director of secondary education, who led the committees. “ ... These choices

will help establish the groundwork for that rich tradition and culture for students at Eaton High

School.”

The school, which is named after the father of Messenger owner and publisher Roy Eaton, is slated to open in August 2015 with freshmen and sophomores only.

Current enrollment projections indicate the school will open with approximately 1,000 students. Another grade level will be added each year until the campus has ninth through 12th grades in the 2017-18 school year.

Parker named Damon’s successor The report on the Eaton High School colors and mascot was Edwards’ last as an employee of NISD. He will join the SchertzCibolo-Universal City ISD, northeast of San Antonio, as assistant superintendent of student and academic services. The board named Linda Parker, a Wise County resident, his successor.

“Dr. Parker is an experienced educator with proven leadership skills in Northwest ISD,” Dr. Karen Rue said. “She has shown

tremendous commitment to the district’s vision and core beliefs, and I’m confident she will excel in this

Parker brings 28 years’ experience in education, including 17 years in the classroom and 11 in administration.

She is currently principal at NISD’s Byron Nelson High School, where she has led the campus since its opening in 2009.

She has served the students and staff of Northwest ISD since 2001. Prior to coming to NISD, Parker worked in Boyd ISD and O’Donnell ISD. “I am excited to serve the community, staff and students in this new position,” Dr. Parker said. “I am looking forward to continuing to bring positivity and leadership to an organization that is focused on student success and achievement.”

She earned her doctorate in education at Nova Southeastern University.

She holds a master’s degree in education from Texas Woman’s University and a bachelor of science degree from Texas Tech University.

She was selected as a member of the 2013-2014

Principals’ Visioning Institute, where she trains and works with fellow principals across Texas who are focused on the transformation of education.

She is an adjunct professor for Dallas Baptist University and has presented across the state at various conferences such as the Texas Association of High School Principals and the Conference for Advancement of Mathematics Teaching. She serves on the board of directors for the Texas Association of School Principals.

Parker will finish the school year as principal at Byron Nelson High School.

Board to meet again Thursday

The Alvord school board will convene again Thursday, with the contract of embattled head football coach Curtis Enis once again on the agenda.

The board deadlocked on a proposed renewal of Enis’ contract on March 27. Since then, they have met three times, each time considering what action to take on the contract of the head football coach and athletic director.

On April 14, with Randy Hamilton back on the board after resigning last June, trustees voted 4-3 to give notice of termination. But after a two-hour closed session, they voted unanimously to rescind that action.

A week later, they met in closed session for several hours but took no action.

On April 24 they met again, this time going into a

30-minute closed session before emerging to once again unanimously table action on the AD’s contract.

Thursday’s meeting will be the fifth in five weeks with those items on the agenda.

This time the wording for item No. 5 is “Contract for head football coach” and item No. 6 states, “Giving notice of intent to propose non-renewal of athletic director’s contract.”

The board will also consider: textbook adoptions a re-roofing project on the high school building budget amendment an oil and gas lease with Pioneer Natural Resources other personnel recommendations.

Roof earns 2 golds at region Kayson Roof admitted to having some nerves before competing over the weekend at the Class A Division II Region III meet in Bullard.

But the Slidell freshman put aside her anxiety to earn a pair of bids to the University Interscholastic League track and field championships May 9-10.

Roof won the girls pole vault and 300 hurdles.

“Going to state as a regional champion is awesome,” she said.

Roof cleared nine feet to win the pole vault.

“I got my personal best,” she said. “I was so excited.”

She expects to go after 10 feet at the state meet.

Her teammate Kylie Franklin finished third, clearing seven feet.

In the 300 hurdles, Roof caught the leader at the curve and went on to win in 50.12.

Shauna Coleman of Lipan took second in 52.07.

Roof was one of two Lady Greyhounds to earn a state spot. Caitlin Pruett won the 800 in 2:25.93. She finished more than six seconds in front of second place.

The Slidell girls 4x400 finished third in 4:28.25. Roof and Pruett joined Kayleigh Miller and Franklin on the relay.

Miller took third in the 400 in 1:05.59.

Makayla Fitzgerald was sixth in the 3200 in 13:44.49.

As a team, Slidell finished third at the regional meet with 55 points. Gorman won the title with 92.5.

After Mason Baur’s complete-game shutout on Thursday, Jones took the ball Friday and gave the Eagles five strong innings, allowing three unearned runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked four.

“I got the lead early and just tried to throw strikes and let my defense do the work,” Jones said.

His biggest pitch was his final one. With the Eagles up 7-3, Jones walked a pair to load the bases with two outs.

He then got Carter Stokes to fly out to center field to end the threat.

“Jones did a fabulous job. He had zero earned runs through five innings,” Carter said. “He kept us in the game and kept the pace of the game going.”

AJ Johnson earned the save, working two innings in relief.

He struck out three, including two straight to end the game.

Decatur jumped on Krum starter Colten Lucas early, using a walk and singles by Austin Givens and Drew Edwards for a pair of runs in the first.

After Krum scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to tie game, the Eagles plated four in the second. Baur drove in two with a double. Austin Givens then parked a pitch over the fence for a two-run homer.

“It felt good. The wind helped it out but it still counts in the book,” Givens said.

Givens went 2-for-4. Decatur piled up eight hits.

“We were seeing the ball great and picking it up out of his hand,” Givens said.

Boyd sweeps into second round The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets continued battering Maypearl pitching Friday night to finish off the two-game sweep of the Class 2A Region II bi-district series.

After pounding out 21 hits in game one, the Lady Yellowjackets piled up 15 in an 18-8 win at Weatherford College to end the series. Boyd had six extra-base hits, including homers from Gabby Saldivar and Chelsea Arlington in the six-inning win.

“Everyone, one through nine, hit and did their part,” said Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins.

Boyd advances to the area round of the playoffs for the first time since 2006 with the victory over Maypearl.

“They knocked us out last year.

We took care of business. The girls had a chip on their shoulder and wanted to beat them,” Hopkins said.

The Lady Yellowjackets move on to play District 11-2A champion Whitewright in an area round series at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. The series begins at 7 p.m. Thursday. Game two will be at 3 p.m. Saturday and the third game, if necessary, will follow.

Whitewright, ranked seventh in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, swept Sunnyvale over the weekend with 9-1

and 16-1 victories.

“We played them once in a pool game and lost 5-3 in four innings,” Hopkins said. “They have two pitchers that can pitch, can hit and play good defensively.

It’s going to be a challenge. We’ll have to keep our strikeouts down and put the ball in play.”

That wasn’t a problem against Maypearl. The Lady Yellowjackets struck out only once Friday and drew 11 walks.

Boyd plated a pair of runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead.

They answered four Maypearl runs in the third with four of their own on doubles by Savannah Foster and Brittney Howard, and a two-run homer by Saldivar.

Saldivar drove in four runs, going 2-for-2. Howard was 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Arlington hit a two-run bomb in the fifth to put Boyd up 10-5. She knocked in three runs on two hits.

Maypearl scored three in the top of the sixth to pull within two at 10-8. But Boyd ended the game with an eight-run sixth that included seven walks and singles

Frisco Lone Star ends Lady Eagles’ season

Krum holds off Bulls

With a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning, the Frisco Lone Star finished off the Class 3A bidistrict series Friday with the Decatur Lady Eagles.

Lone Star beat the Lady Eagles 14-4 in game two to complete the two-game sweep.

The loss was the final game for Decatur’s seniors, who helped the team to back-to-back playoff appearances.

“We’re losing seven girls, so we’ll have to rebuild for next year,” said Decatur coach Carly Cloud.

Lone Star plated a run in the first, second and third innings to built a 3-0 lead. The Rangers broke the game open with a fourrun fourth that included

an RBI triple by Ashley Cantu and a run-scoring single by Miranda Garza.

Cantu went 4-for-4 and scored four runs.

Lone Star put together six singles around a pair of walks in the game-ending, seven-run sixth.

“We gave up a couple of big innings,” Cloud said.

All four of the Lady Eagles’ runs came in the top of the sixth. Brittany Roberts led off with a single and came in to score on Brianna Carter’s single. Madi Minor and Val Thompson added RBIsingles in the frame.

Kristina Pishotta had Decatur’s lone extra-base hit, a double in the sixth.

Roberts, Jenny Bradford and Thompson each went 2-for-3.

After cutting Krum’s lead in half in the top of the sixth inning, the Bridgeport Bulls appeared set to push across the tying runs with runners at second and third and one out.

But Krum pitcher Mason Lucas got Bridgeport’s Mason Baker to pop up his squeeze bunt back to the mound. Lucas snared it and fired the ball back to third for an inning-ending double play that secured the Bobcats’ 4-2 victory Friday in the 9-3A tiebreaker for the league’s third seed.

“We had the guy from second also going but we couldn’t execute the squeeze,” said Bridgeport coach Ted Leps. “Your seven, eight and nine hitters have got to be able to bunt.”

With the win, Krum earned the league’s third playoff seed. The Bulls fell to the fourth seed with their second loss in two days and will open the Class 3A playoffs with a bi-district series against fourth-ranked Argyle at Northwest High School.

The series begins at 7 p.m. Thursday. Game two is at 7 p.m. Friday. The third game, if necessary, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“We’ve played them before and know what they are about,” Leps said. “We’ll have to play our best game ever to beat them.”

After being shutout Thursday, the Bulls’ offense couldn’t get going against Krum starter Colton Knierim, managing just two hits over five innings. In the sixth, Bridgeport’s Alex Samples and Daniel Gar-

cia worked walks to start the inning. Jared Huff then plated both of them with a double to left.

After failing to tie the game in the top of the sixth, the Bulls got two on in the seventh with a pair of singles by Travis Fuentes and Erik Delgadillo. But Lucas got a strikeout and infield fly to end the game.

James Gray took the loss for the Bulls, allowing four runs — one earned — on three hits in three innings.

Two of the runs off Gray were set up by back-toback doubles to start the second.

Huff took over in the bottom of the fourth and worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

“We kept it close,” Leps said. “That’s what we ask of our pitchers.”

Anderle takes second in triple jump

On his first jump Saturday, Marshall Anderle secured a trip to Austin.

Anderle landed a leap of 45-7.5 to finish second in the triple jump at the Class A Region II meet at Abilene Christian University.

“I felt fresh on that jump and hit the board just right,” Anderle said. “I’ve always wanted to go to state. This means a lot.”

Anderle finished fifth last year at regionals. This year, jumping with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, suffered during football season, he beat his previous best mark by more

than a foot. “[The knee] has not been a problem at all,” Anderle said.

He credited his work with coach Lane Wilson in recent weeks for the second-place effort.

“Coach Wilson has helped me a lot with triple jump,” Anderle said.

Stamford’s James Washington won the region title in the event, landing an effort of 46-7.

Anderle took ninth in the long jump with a leap of 201.5.

Jonathon Nabors finished 15th in the 3200, running

12:24.64.

In the prelims, Jericoe McGuire ran 47.17 in the 300 hurdles for 14th. The Chico 4x200 team of Jaston McBee, Corbin Blackwood, Crese Redman and Kalen Johnson ran 1:36.68 for 11th.

For the Lady Dragons, Charlye Biggerstaff finished 14th in the long jump, going 15-2.25. Corey Tate was 15th with a 15-0.75.

In prelims, Whitney Renfro ran a 53.08 in the 300 hurdles for ninth. Leah Davidson turned in the 16thbest time in the 200, running 29.16. The Chico girls 4x400

Stidham brings home gold After a strong start, Dalton Stidham clipped the third hurdle Saturday during the Class 2A Region II 110 finals.

But the little stumble didn’t slow the Boyd senior on his way to winning the region title in 14.51.

“I hit the third hurdle but kept my composure and finished the race,” Stidham said.

The win gave Stidham a spot in the University Interscholastic League track and field championships May 9-10 in Austin.

“This means a lot to me.

It’s been my life’s dream since I’ve been in track to run at state.”

Along with earning a state spot and a gold medal, Stidham turned in his best time.

But he didn’t have long to celebrate. The senior was back on the track shortly after his victory in the 110s to run the 300s. He brought home a silver medal and another spot in the state meet, finishing in 39.25. Buffalo’s William Adams won in 39.09.

“It wasn’t my best race,” Stidham said. “It was good to get out. I have room to improve.

“Hopefully at state I can get on the medal stand.”

Stidham wasn’t the only Boyd athlete to win a gold medal. Sprinter Qualynn Wells won the 200 in 22.21, edging Rosebud-Lott’s Artis Johnson by 0.01 of a second.

GOING FOR GOLD — Boyd’s Dalton Stidham didn’t let a little thing like hitting a hurdle slow him down, as he finished first at the 2A Regional Meet in Stephenville Saturday. Stidham’s win earned him a trip to the UIL State Track Meet in Austin.

The Alvord junior and defending state silver medalist took second in the 800 at the Class 2A Region II meet Saturday. Williams finished in 2:22.8.

“I ran pretty good. It was windy,” Williams said. “I wanted to make sure I get a chance to run at state. I’m going to spend the next two weeks completely dedicated to working on the track to make sure I improve and do better than last year.”

Rogers’ Erin Williams edged Williams for the gold medal, running 2:21.95.

“She definitely had a good kick,” Williams said. “I will

try to have a better one on May 9.”

The two set a blazing pace, completing the first lap in 68 seconds.

Northwest’s Gleason locks up pair of state spots After prelims on Friday, Northwest’s Kerry Gleason sat third in the 110 hurdles, a spot out of a guaranteed berth into the state meet.

“I knew I had to step it up if I was going to make sure I was going to state,” Gleason said. “I went all-out, knowing it could be my last race.”

The motivated Gleason flew down the Fuller Track at Texas Tech University Saturday, finishing in 14.33 seconds to take the 5A Region I silver medal and secure a trip to Austin May 10. He later added a silver medal in the 300 hurdles to earn a spot in the University Interscholastic League Championships in a second event.

“Finally getting to go [to

state] is incredible,” Gleason said. “Everything fell into place.”

DeSoto’s Chevis Armstead won the 110 hurdles in 13.86.

Gleason held off Abilene’s Jesus Serrano and DeSoto’s Sabrien Wheeler, who both ran 14.51, for second.

“It was close. I could see the guy on the outside and outleaned him at the end,” Gleason said. “I didn’t see the guy on the inside who ended up being third.”

After the strong 110 hurdles race, Gleason moved up two spots from prelims in the 300 hurdles to take second. He ran 37.9, finishing 0.12 behind the winner — Serrano.

“My thought in the 300

was that I already qualified in one event and was going to Austin, so I let loose and let whatever happen,” Gleason said. “I wasn’t expecting to make it in the 300 because there were a lot of fast guys.

To have that after the 110s was icing on the cake.”

After a strong start in the 300s, Gleason hit the curve tied for first. In the straightaway, he fell to third. Gleason said 110 champion Armstead stuttered and hit the last hurdle.

“I picked him off to take second,” Gleason said.

Armstead finished in 37.9 for third.

Texans finish runner-up Behind a pair of silver-

medal finishes by Kerry Gleason and wins in the 4x100 and discus, the Northwest Texans brought home second place at the 5A Region I meet.

Northwest finished with 52 points. DeSoto won the meet with 58 points.

Twenty of the Texans’ points came in the first race Saturday. The 4x100 squad of Saveion James, Chase Morrison, Reggie McDaniel and Jordan Muldrow ran a 41.18 to win the region title.

Killeen took second in 41.18.

Duke Kicinski was the first Texan to earn a state spot, finishing second in the discus with a toss of 178-6.

In the 1600, Zach Kirkland ran 4:18.65 to take the

silver medal. Keller’s Austen Dalquist won the race in 4:13.58.

Freier wins fourth regional title Northwest’s Desiree Freier completed her career sweep of the pole vault at the 5A Region I meet Saturday, taking gold for the fourth time.

Freier cleared 14 feet to set a new meet record. She made three attempts at 14-9.

The national record holder will now try for a third state crown.

Kevetter rebounds after fall

Nearing the final hurdle of the 110 Class 3A Region II finals Saturday, Decatur’s Jacob Kevetter appeared to have a state berth in hand.

“I got too antsy and my foot crossed over my body,” Kevetter said.

The Decatur junior fell, missing a chance at a state spot. He gathered himself to finish the last several meters and the race in 17.5.

But the hurdler didn’t stay down long. A few minutes later, Kevetter turned in a 39.65 in the 300 hurdles to finish second and claim his spot at the University Interscholastic League state track meet.

“I knew I wasn’t going to fall in the 300s,” he said.

“I was focused. I had confidence and have been running well.”

Gilmer’s Nick Smith edged Kevetter for the gold medal, running 39.25.

Rivera’s unbeaten streak snapped After going undefeated in the 800 through the area meet, Decatur’s Brandon Rivera couldn’t hold off Kaufman’s Dylan Evans Saturday for the Class 3A Region II title.

Evans stepped in front of Rivera at the finish line to take the gold medal in 1:58.2. Rivera finished in 1:58.46.

“He got me at the end,” Rivera said. “I’m still going for gold at state.”

Rivera was second through the first lap with Gilmer’s Juwan Hughes setting the pace. Rivera took the lead with 300 meters to go. He couldn’t shake Evans, who actually stepped on Rivera’s heel in the final 100.

“He clipped my heel and I couldn’t get back in the groove,” Rivera said.

“There’s nothing you can do about being clipped. I’d rather this happen this week than next week.”

Parker narrowly misses medal In a tight finish between

second and fourth, Decatur sophomore Gunnar Parker came up just short of a medal in the 100 Saturday.

Parker finished in 11.08.

Silver medalist Trey Gardner of Dallas Madison ran 11-flat. Kaufman’s Desmond Williams ran 11.01 for third.

“I felt good out of the blocks,” Parker said. “I thought I had second. It was so close.”

Dennard takes third in 800 Decatur senior Haley Dennard came up short in her quest to return to the state track meet.

Dennard ran a 2:24.99 to finish third and take the bronze medal at the 3A Region II meet. Nevada Community’s Keely Morrow won the race in 2:20.97, and Ranchview’s Paulena Lynch took second in 2:21.82.

“I got boxed in and by the time I got out of it, they were too far away,” Dennard said.

Decatur’s Jessica Kyle finished fourth in 2:26.33.

“This means a lot,” Stripling said. “I was happy I got here.”

Stripling was almost eliminated early, missing twice at 4-10.

“My approach was messed up, and I scratched twice at 4-10,” she said. “Coach [David] Park told me to calm down. He made a few jokes to help me.

“I started to go too fast.

Once I fixed that and accelerated near the bar, it helped me a lot.”

Stripling earns medal in high jump Decatur junior Macen Stripling cleared a personal-best 5-4 to get on the medal stand at the Class 3A Region II meet in the high jump.

Stripling earned the bronze medal with her third-place finish. She finished one inch short of earning a wild-card trip to the state meet.

After several near-misses, Lexi Read finally got a putt to fall in for birdie on No. 18 at the Wolfdancer Golf Course at the Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop.

“That felt great to finish out with a birdie,” said the Bridgeport sophomore.

The birdie capped a round of 81 on the long 4,953-yard windblown course.

Read finished with a 167 for ninth place at the Class 3A tournament.

“I felt I could’ve played better, but I’ll take it,” Read said.

After dropping four of their final five games in District 9-3A and losing ace pitcher Clayton Egle, the Decatur Eagles looked to be the longshot among the three teams vying for the league’s second seed.

But the resurgent Eagles, behind a solid outing from Josh Jones on the mound and some early offense, defied the odds Friday to knock off Krum 7-4 in the secondgame of the three-team tiebreaker to earn 9-3A’s second playoff seed.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks,” Jones said. “I’m glad we pulled together when it mattered most.”

Decatur beat Bridgeport and Krum on back-to-back days to earn the second seed and a bi-district date with 10-3A’s third seed Frisco Lone Star. The threegame series at Denton High School begins at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday. Game two is Friday, and the third game, if necessary, will be at 2 p.m.

“We’ve been preaching all year about focusing on one pitch at a time and then the adversity is not something you have time to think about,” said Decatur coach Chris Carter. “Just compete that one pitch, and you can defeat that adversity.

Rival Perry edges Decatur runner for region title

With 25 meters left, Decatur’s Taylor Clayton made a last surge to put himself in front of Sanger’s Jacob Perry Saturday in the 1600.

But as Clayton took his final step at the finish line, Perry leaned forward to just sneak across the tape and steal the Class 3A Region II title and gold medal.

“I thought I outstepped him,” Clayton said. “I didn’t think to lean.”

Perry beat his future Texas A&M teammate by 0.01 of second. Perry finished in 4:24.2, and Clayton in 4:24.21.

Perry said he learned to lean at the finish line after losing a close race at the Jesuit meet.

Perry also edged Clayton in the 3200 Friday evening. Both will run against each other in Austin at the University Interscholastic League state meet May 9-10.

“He’s got most of the races, but I can get the other two in two weeks,” said Clayton, who won the 3A title in cross country in the fall.

The 9-3A pair, who finished first and second at the district and area meets in the 1600 and 3200, led the pack from start to finish in the regional 1600. Perry led the first lap that they finished in 63 seconds. They passed through the 800 in 2:12.

“With the wind, our first 800 was about six seconds slow,” Clayton said. “We expected to be at 2:06.”

Perry took the lead in the third lap and the duo turned a 69-second quarter.

The two ran the last lap in 63, shedding the rest of the pack. Sanger’s Josh Mills took third in 4:26.96.

“We ran hard the last lap,” Clayton said.

This stems from families having the desire to grow their own food and from youth bringing home chicks from their classroom’s Egg to Chick project. Either way, we’re excited to be in the middle of a chicken frenzy around here!

Join us for the 4th Annual Wise Chicks Coop Tour Saturday, May 3. The day

will start at 10 a.m. with a presentation, “Raising Chickens 101,” by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension staff at the Women’s Building on the Wise County Fairgrounds in Decatur. The annual summertime top 10 movie guesses This is a rare week (that happens every year) when the Movie Man skips a film, puts on his prognosticating hat, and tries to ascertain what the top 10 movies of the upcoming summer season will be.

It’s never perfect. There’s always some movie that seems to come out of nowhere and is a big hit. Like “Ted” (2012, a 3). That film went on to land in the rarefied air of last summer’s top 10.

This time, the Movie Man is factoring in the Seth McFarland effect (formerly the Adam Sandler effect).

This summer’s biggies 10. “A Million Ways to Die in the West” This is McFarland’s latest comedy, a Western with his usual cultural references and juvenile humor. Still, there’s no denying the Family Guy’s clout and appeal.

He stars in this one.

Expect the usual — lots of gross-out, sophomoric gags with an occasional home run. It arrives May 30.

9. “Guardians of the Galaxy” So far, Marvel’s successful streak remains unbroken.

This is a very weird, offbeat choice to continue the company’s domination. But the fanboys will still support it — especially since the alien “heroes” are rumored to become part of “Avengers 3.”

Plus, “Guardians’” coming attraction is funny. It hits theaters Aug. 1.

8. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” There’s a huge fan base for the Turtles, too. Megan Fox (remember her?) returns as April and this time around, the Turtles are all computer generated.

Michael Bay (we’ll talk about him more in a minute) is producing, so look for some gigantic set pieces.

Expect a big opening on Aug. 8.

7. “Maleficent” This Disney movie sound-

ed goofy, even with a great casting of Angelina Jolie.

Then the Movie Man saw the trailer which is pretty impressive.

He expects the film to tread the line between scary and fun — something Disney has perfected through the years. Enough tweens and Mommies will show up to make this a hit.

It arrives May 30 like “A Million Ways to Die in the West” — it’s unusual for the Movie Man to choose a pair of Top 10ers from the same

date, but it’ll likely happen.

6. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” The Movie Man’s a little concerned about the time between this sequel and the original reboot (2011, a 7).

But, again, the coming attraction is superior and the buzz remains.

Of all the Movie Man’s Top 10 guesses, this one’s chanciest; it could open big then fade. But there’s little else around it (see Possible Breakthroughs), and “Dawn” could have some substantial staying power after its July 11 opening.

5. “Godzilla” This is the summer movie the Movie Man is most looking forward to. The effects appear top-notch, and Bryan Cranston gives the picture a bit of star power.

The Movie Man is well versed in the creature, from its rubber-suit beginnings to its oft-disdained bigscreen remakes. This one looks upper tier. It arrives May 10.

4. “The Amazing SpiderMan 2” The movie that officially kicks off the summer blockbuster season should stay around for a couple of months. This one looks more light-hearted and boasts a couple of popular villains (aside from the ever-present Green Goblin) in Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx).

It’s hard to believe that “Spidey 2” won’t be a giant hit right off the bat when it hits theaters May 2.

3. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” The first one (2010, a 7) was fun, unique and, most of all, utilized the 3-D process as well as any movie ever.

Judging from previews, that will occur again. Combined with a lack of any sort of animated competition this summer means that after “Dragon 2” opens June 13, it should remain the rest of the summer.

2. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” The merging of the XMen universes is a great idea. And, wisely, fan favorite Wolverine has a major role; he time travels so appears in both ends of the action.

Even with the bad publicity surrounding its director — Bryan Singer is accused of a crime — once it begins, nothing will stop this Marvel juggernaut. (See what the Movie Man did there?

Man foe. Oh, Movie Man!) Well, only one thing could stop it…

1. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” The Movie Man learned long ago to not bet against Michael Bay’s “Transformers.” The trio before this June 27 release made $319 million, $402 million and $342 million, respectively, in the U.S. — and that’s with openings of $70.5 million, $109 million and $98 million.

With what the Movie Man perceives as a weaker than usual summer, “Age of Extinction” could reach $400 million.

Possible breakthroughs It’s often comedies that manage to upset the prediction apple cart. The Movie Man’s choices to break through are a trio of funny ones.

Most likely, the top comedy (after McFarland’s Western) will be “Tammy” (July 2). It’s a road movie with the popular Melissa McCarthy and there’s zero competition for a femaleslanted movie this summer.

Susan Sarandon also stars.

A second possible top 10 hit is another juvenile comedy, the frat house vs. adults-next-door battle of “Neighbors” (May 9) with Seth Rogen. Twentysomethings might eat this one up.

“22 Jump Street” (June 13) comes off a popular original (2012, a 5), but it might get overwhelmed by the competition; it opens with “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

BY GERRY LEWIS At least 90 percent of the time, I write this column from the rocking chair in my living room. It is my place to meet with God each morning, consume much coffee, and be inspired.

I’m working on getting my home office/man cave set up where I can work/write/ record for long, uninterrupted periods of time — but the mornings will still begin in the rocking chair.

I’ve occasionally written from other places, like church parking lots, coffee shops (coffee = necessary writing tool), and even waiting in line for the ferry to Vancouver Island.

Today it is the table in my dad’s dining room.

God came and took our Thingy (my stepmother: “Life Matters” from the week of April 7) to be with Him early last Thursday morning.

We celebrated her life with memorial services, conversations, food, friends, and music for all of this past weekend.

Now that most everyone

has gone home, Mrs. Sweetie and I decided to stay for a few more days and help Dad out with some Life things.

When I Matters spoke at Thingy’s memorial service Saturday afternoon, I referenced a passage from Psalm 116. The New Living Translation of verses 15-16 says, “The Lord cares deeply when his loved ones die. O Lord, I am your servant; yes, I am your servant, born into your household; you have freed me from my chains.” [emphasis mine] While meditating on those verses a couple of weeks back, it occurred to me that Thingy was about to be released from the chains of cancer, MS and the wheelchair that has been her constant means of transportation for 20 years.

As I shared those thoughts, I reminded those gathered

that we should never say that she lost her battle with cancer. Cancer did everything it could. It took her final breath at 12:50 a.m. Thursday morning. But since she is now more alive than she has ever been, cancer has walked away the loser.

Thingy was quite the athlete in her day, and softball was one of her specialties. I told them that, on Thursday morning, she slid head-first into home plate and God shouted, “Safe!” Then she stood up, Jesus dusted her off, and she ran a victory lap around the bases. Completely.

Ultimately. Healed.

I share that thought today for a couple of reasons. One is that I have chronicled my journey with her illness in my column and blog writing for the past several weeks — partly as my therapy and

Cost is $150 for adult teams and $100 for youth.
