Lost June As cases silently expanded, local attorney experienced the disruptive force of the virus

I

t started with a cough, then a fever, and then a positive diagnosis of COVID-19. At one point, Mary Lois Spain-Sipes of Decatur thought she might die. Perhaps the hardest part of dealing with the coronavirus was the thought of who she may have unknowingly infected, and what might happen to them. At the beginning of June, she thought the virus wouldn’t affect her or her family. A month later, she was worried she might lose her mother. The pandemic had hit home in Wise County. Delta flight attendant Laura Montgomery remembers a time when airplane cabins were filled with cigarette smoke, people on board
