Standing the Test of Time This year we have the privilege of celebrating Char-Broil’s 70th anniversary. As one of the first manufacturers of outdoor grills, Char-Broil introduced the Wheelbarrow Picnic Cooker in 1948. We certainly have come a long way from that first charcoal grill and those early days.

Char-Broil is one of the leading gas grill brand in the United States, and we are well on our way to establishing a strong position in Europe.

Amazon was something no one had even dreamed of, and the internet and personal computers hadn’t even been envisioned yet. Certainly no one had ever thought that one day smart phones and tablets would be in the hands of virtually every consumer and could be used to help with grilling food!

In the 1960s, we introduced our first gas grill. We have developed many major innovations over the years since then, including our Char-Broil® Tru-Infrared™ grills that provide even heat and no flareups, as well as our SmartChef® Technology, which allows you to control and monitor your grill temperature, cook times, and more using your compatible smart device and a Wi-Fi connection.

Char-Broil has stood the test of time after all these years when many other grill brands have come and gone. We have adapted to the changing consumer and to the changing retail environment. Big-box stores are now the biggest sellers of grills in the United States and our largest customers. Our millennial consumers look for different things than their parents did. They want versatility and ease of use so the “grill-master” is not obliged to spend all day over the grill while his or her guests are having all the fun. They also have smaller families and often smaller homes, so we developed grills that are sized for their needs.

The innovations created by our team over the past 70 years have helped us remain in touch with the market and consumers. Just think back to the time when we introduced our first grills. In 1948 the oldest of the baby boomer generation was just two years old.

Today, many baby boomers are retired and parents of millennials – our main consumer now – and grandparents of Generation Z kids!

For the past 70 years, Char-Broil has brought enjoyment to backyard grilling and smoking. And, the Char-Broil team is committed to continuing this long tradition through quality brands and innovative products. They strive to enhance the outdoor cooking experience so that their consumers can stress less and enjoy time spent with family and friends.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary, Char-Broil hosted a summer cookout for employees at their headquarters in Columbus, Georgia. There, an “Instaburger” contest ensued as employees created their own colossal burgers and submitted them via Instagram for a chance to win a prize. Toppings ranged from the usual suspects like lettuce and tomato as well as those like donuts, pineapple and peanut butter. The catch: burgers had to be eaten in order to qualify. Jennifer Miller, General Ledger Accountant at Char-Broil, was the champion.

Char-Broil continued the celebration with a direct-to-consumer sweepstakes, “70 Prizes to Celebrate 70 Years.” To enter, consumers simply visited charbroil.com and submitted an entry form. Prizes included a Signature Series™ TRU-Infrared™ 2-Burner Gas Grill with a 2-3 Burner Rip-Stop Cover, a Grill2Go® X200 TRU-Infrared™ Portable Gas Grill with a Grill2Go® X200 Portable Gas Grill Carrying Case, a Gas2Coal® 3-Burner Hybrid Grill with a 3-4 Burner Rip Stop Cover, and much more!

The campaign was a huge success with a total of 39,918 entries. This was a 30% increase in entries and a 30% increase in visits to the website when compared to the previous large-scale sweepstakes executed in 2016.

The Char-Broil team didn’t stop there. Partnering with White Oaks Pastures, the Char-Broil team took to Facebook Live and grilled 70 ounces of steaks to commemorate their 70th anniversary.

Char-Broil is also the presenting sponsor this year of the Barbecue Nation Exhibit at the Atlanta History Center, which runs through September 2019. Char-Broil’s first grill and one of the first commercially produced grills is proudly on display at the museum, the Char-Broil ® Wheelbarrow Picnic Cooker.

Oklahoma Joe’s Visits the W.C. Bradley Farm Char-Broil recently tackled a large, internal photoshoot for the Oklahoma Joe’s brand at the W.C. Bradley Farm Page Place in Omaha, Georgia.

“This is the second time we have used the W.C. Bradley Farm for an Oklahoma Joe’s photoshoot,” said Leandi McMurphy, Senior Manager, Digital Marketing for Char-Broil and Oklahoma Joe’s. “The Farm provides a wonderful background for Char-Boil to showcase the Oklahoma Joe’s product line, including the new drum smoker and portable charcoal grill, as well as to capture content for our 2019 social media platforms.”

Dan Fletcher, General Manager of the W.C. Bradley Farm, said, “The Farm is a great place for all business units to utilize. We have this beautiful property, and whether it’s for a photoshoot, team building or a client meeting, the W.C. Bradley Farm is the perfect setting.”

Oklahoma Joe’s is proud to sponsor Scott Henricks and the Oklahoma Joe’s Serious Que Competition BBQ Team. Serious Que started as a competitive cooking team in 2010 and is comprised of Scott Henricks and his father, Jim Henricks.

Together, they’ve placed in numerous BBQ competitions and have won Grand Champion in several competitions.

Oklahoma Joe’s began Scott Henricks of the sponsoring Serious Que Oklahoma Joe’s in 2015, and now Serious Serious Que Team Que cooks exclusively on Oklahoma Joe’s products. Badlands Experiences the Farm Char-Broil isn’t the only brand stopping by the W.C. Bradley Farm! Recently, Badlands’ Marketing Manager, Blake VanTussenbrook, took a trip to the Farm to explore how the two could work together to grow the Badlands hunting brand.

“I was truly blown away at how large of an operation the Farm is and how smoothly it runs with the staff they have in place,” VanTussenbrook said.

“From land and wildlife management to lodging and dining, the whole operation is incredible.”

Lights, Camera, Action!

Opens in Columbus Columbus is setting its sights on the film industry! A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 24, 2018, at Flat Rock Studio, owned by W.C. Bradley Co. Real Estate, in conjunction with Columbus State University’s (CSU) television and film production program. The new studio is now the official home to the NEXUS film degree program offered by the university.

Flat Rock Studio is located in a former warehouse owned by W.C. Bradley Co. Real Estate, once the home to Bradley Direct, off Jameson Road in Columbus, Georgia. At 180,000 square feet, the studio features two adaptable sound stages, a workshop, set design, adjoining production suites and classrooms for the CSU film program. The backlot includes 80 acres of green space, forest, paved and gravel roads, and even a two-acre lake.

The new sound stage and production space is a state-of-the-art facility for movie and television productions looking to film in the Columbus area.

It is also providing students in the Columbus State film program hands-on experiences in real film and television production.

“The servant leaders at W.C. Bradley Co. really stepped up to the need for this facility,” said Columbus State President Chris Markwood. “Now our students will have the tremendous opportunity to stay in Columbus and train at a real live production studio.”

Just a week before the ribbon cutting, Columbus State University was approved to offer the new Nexus Degree in Film Production. This program is aimed at meeting the qualifications of potential employers in the film industry by providing students with hands-on learning, gaining the skills necessary to work on a film or television set.

Making a Difference on The Farm For the second year in a row, Lamplight closed all U.S. operations for the day on Tuesday, August 14. Instead of heading into work as normal, the team members strapped on a pair of old tennis shoes, picked up a pair of work gloves, and headed to The Farm, an extension of the Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There, the team spent the day harvesting fresh produce that would ultimately find its way to a family’s dinner table the following day.

The Farm grows fresh fruits and vegetables for the express purpose of feeding the hungry, creating a reliable source of healthy food for their network. All of the Wisconsin staples are grown — over 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables in all! The Farm is part of the Hunger Task Force, a local non-profit whose mission is to provide a safety net of emergency food to a network of local food pantries and meal programs. The Farm provides 750,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables every year for the Hunger Task Force. That day, the Lamplight team harvested an estimated 10,616 pounds of produce, which is over five tons of food for their community!

Lamplight, Zebco and Char-Broil China Join Together to Help Those in Need

Lamplight, Char-Broil and Zebco China Team Members with the residents of the Snail Home.

The W.C. Bradley Co. team members in China, comprised of Lamplight, Char-Broil and Zebco, came together in September 2018 to visit the Snail Home and donate RMB 35,000. The Snail Home is a living facility for people with disabilities. Currently the residence houses 52 people. The founder of the home, Mrs. Chen Lixiang, and her team along with volunteers help run the home. The donation will go towards medical supplies, home improvements and basic daily needs. Team members in China also raised nearly RMB 5,000 in cash donations in order to purchase toiletry kits for each resident of Snail Home. This was the first time all three sister companies in China have come together as a family, showcasing the essence of the Kris Chen from Lamplight, China, interacts with a resident who W.C. Bradley Co. Spirit! received a donation from the W.C. Bradley family of companies.

In 2018, the W.C. Bradley Co. marked its 133rd year of operation as a family-owned enterprise.

To honor this significant milestone of six generations of family ownership and leadership, the company commissioned a commemorative quilt entitled “The Common Thread.”

The quilt was created by Columbus designer Alison Hagler and rendered in stitch by artist Tabby Champion. It depicts six generations of the family tree, from the birth of founder W.C. Bradley to the current day. The tree’s leaves are embroidered with all the names of the heirs of W.C. Bradley. This beautiful quilted tree is a fitting representation of the strength of the bonds created by the family’s values being passed from one generation to the next.

“The Common Thread” quilt was presented to the family in September 2018, when 116 of the 143 living heirs of W.C. Bradley were gathered at a Family Reunion in Asheville, North Carolina.
