Voorwoord In 2018 toonde Het Noordbrabants Museum een verrassende bloemlezing van de Chinese hedendaagse kunst: A Chinese Journey: The Sigg Collection. Deze succesvolle expositie besloeg de gehele tentoonstellingsvleugel van het museum en bood bezoekers een kennismaking met 36 verrassende, soms zeer omvangrijke kunstwerken van enkele van de meest toonaangevende kunstenaars in China. De traditie, de spiritualiteit en de maatschappelijke en politieke realiteit in China vormden de hoofdthema’s van de tentoonstelling. De werken waren afkomstig uit de collectie van de Zwitserse verzamelaar dr. Uli Sigg. Hij was zo genereus ons een keuze te laten maken uit zijn collectie van meer dan 2.500 werken, alvorens een groot deel ervan definitief naar het nieuwe museum M+ in Hongkong zou verhuizen.

Eén van de kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling was Shao Fan. Hij was met twee werken vertegenwoordigd: in de ene zaal met een levensgroot getekend portret van een konijn dat de bezoeker met een priemende blik aankijkt, in een andere zaal met een gedeconstrueerde stoel bestaande uit plexiglas en elementen van een stoel in de stijl van de Mingperiode. Bezoekers bleken gefascineerd door deze werken, in het bijzonder door de op rijstpapier vervaardigde inkttekening van het konijn. Hun grote waardering voor het werk van Shao Fan was voldoende reden om de kunstenaar uit te nodigen om Nederland wat beter kennis te laten maken met zijn fascinerende oeuvre. Shao Fan: Between Truth and Illusion is de eerste solotentoonstelling van de Chinese kunstenaar. Hiermee bevestigt Het Noordbrabants Museum zijn ambitie om toonaangevende hedendaagse kunstenaars in Nederland te introduceren.

Shao Fan neemt een speciale plaats in binnen de hedendaagse Chinese kunst. In zijn werk combineert hij (schilder- en teken)kunst en design met een diepgaande kennis van de Chinese cultuur. Hij is een meester in de techniek van de klassieke inkttekening. De protagonisten van zijn monumentale werken zijn dieren zoals konijnen, soms ook apen en valken. Voor Shao Fan zijn het archetypen en hybride wezens tussen mens en dier. De kunstenaar produceert ook olieverfschilderijen waarin klassieke Shanshui landschappen opnieuw door hem worden geïnterpreteerd. Bergen en rivieren staan hierin centraal, met watervallen en bergpaden als veelgebruikte elementen. Verder is Shao Fan ook één van de eerste Chinese kunstenaars die de grenzen tussen visuele kunst en meubels verkent, met sierlijke houten sculpturen die verwijzen naar meubels in de bekende Ming-stijl. Zijn werk maakt deel uit van de permanente collectie van het Victoria and Albert Museum in Londen, het National Art Museum of China in Beijing en het Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Voor Het Noordbrabants Museum is het dus een eer om het werk van deze grote kunstenaar in ’s-Hertogenbosch te verwelkomen.

Voorwoord

De samenstelling van deze tentoonstelling was in handen van onze conservator hedendaagse kunst Hans November. Hij schreef ook een essay voor deze catalogus.

Verder vindt u in deze publicatie een verhelderend essay van Shao Fan zelf, alsmede een interview met de kunstenaar door de Duitse journalist, kunstcriticus, curator, essayist en publicist Heinz-Norbert Jocks.

De tentoonstelling is tot stand gekomen met de steun van de Renschdael Art Foundation en Galerie Urs Meile Beijing-Lucerne. Graag spreek ik mijn dank uit jegens Paul en Huguette van Rensch-Brousse voor hun inmiddels jarenlange steun bij het maken van toonaangevende hedendaagse kunsttentoonstellingen in Het Noordbrabants Museum. Shao Fan – Tussen waarheid en illusie Als ik de toekomst wil zien, kijk ik altijd achterom. Tijd is een cirkel. Voor mij zijn het verleden en de toekomst in dezelfde richting. Het is een concept. In mijn recente werk drukken schilderijen en sculpturen op een of andere manier dit idee uit van een met elkaar verbonden verleden en toekomst. Dit resulteert in een ontkenning van de tijd.

Tijdloosheid. Tijd heeft geen betekenis. Ik schilder de ruimte.1 De Chinese kunstenaar Shao Fan is vrij van zekerheden en van behaagzucht. Werkend in het atelier in Beijing verkiest hij om zowel zijn onderwerp als zijn identiteit te verliezen. Hij bant de menselijke gedachten en verlangens uit. Als kunstenaar plaatst Shao Fan zich niet op een lineaire tijdslijn waarbij hij als hedendaagse kunstenaar terugkijkt naar, verder bouwt op of zich afzet tegen professiegenoten.

Hij plaatst zijn kunstwerken buiten de tijd die hij eerder als circulair beschouwt.

Op doek en op (rijst)papier schildert en tekent Shao Fan schijnbaar onbelangrijke dieren, zoals konijnen en apen, in een onbestemde omgeving. In dit essay waag ik een voorzichtige poging om het taoïstische gedachtegoed te duiden en om de invloed ervan terug te vinden in zijn werk. Dit doe ik door middel van drie korte hoofdstukken waarin het taoïsme, de dieren en de traditie worden behandeld.

Hierbij ben ik me ervan bewust dat ook het confucianisme en het boeddhisme een belangrijke rol spelen in de Chinese spiritualiteit en dat er door de eeuwen heen een grote verwevenheid is ontstaan. Dit zal ik echter niet verder behandelen in dit stuk.

Taoïsme In de Tao Te Ching 2 staat dat tao niet in woorden is uit te drukken en bijgevolg dus niet gedefinieerd kan worden. Ondanks deze bekende paradox, valt er toch één en ander te vertellen over het taoïsme. Het uitgangspunt is dat ieder wezen één is met de tao. Hierbij staat ‘de eeuwige tao’ voor ‘de weg’, een ondeelbare en onbeschrijfbare principe, waaruit alles voortvloeit. Het taoïsme schrijft de mens voor om ‘gewoon’ mee te gaan in het voortdurende proces van verandering. Men kan alleen maar op het pad blijven van deze zoektocht naar de onveranderlijkheid in de verandering. Het taoïsme ziet een verbondenheid tussen de mensheid en de natuur, tussen de microkosmos en de macrokosmos, zo doende is de mensheid volledig opgenomen in de kosmos en bezet het geen geprivilegieerde positie. Alles houdt verband met elkaar in een voortdurende stroming van kosmische energieën, zoals Demetrio Paparoni schrijft met betrekking op het werk van Shao Fan3. Fan schildert wat hij in de natuur tegenkomt, hij vermijdt te zoeken naar een onderwerp.

Als kunstenaar wil Shao Fan zo veel mogelijk de houding van ‘de wijze’ of Luohan benaderen. Wat het inhoudt om een wijze te zijn, staat verder beschreven in het boek van de tao5. De kunstenaar Fan praat niet graag over zijn werk. Van de wijze wordt gezegd dat hij eerst een goed luisteraar is en pas later spreekt. Het gaat Shao Fan beter af om rustig verder te werken dan erover te praten. Ook omdat woorden nooit volledig kunnen weergeven wat ermee bedoeld wordt. Net als de wijze, is Fan gezien zijn terdege scholing, bekwaam in wat hij doet. De wijze houdt zichzelf op de achtergrond maar in werkelijkheid staat hij vooraan, valt te lezen. Shao Fan werkt vanuit een innerlijke kracht of ‘de’ in het taoïsme. Het is wat, volgens de tao, het meest aanwezig is als we net geboren zijn, wanneer we nog alles spontaan doen en ons niet afvragen hoe, wat en waarom we dingen doen. De kunstenaar kan zich hierin vinden maar belangrijk is echter ook om te beklemtonen dat de kunstwerken van Shao Fan deel uitmaken van een groter verhaal, het Chinese verhaal. Zelf zegt hij hierover het volgende:

wordt. Het zijn reflecties op wat wij voelen. Die invloeden worden bij het taoïsme weggenomen. Dit past Fan toe in zijn kunst. De eenheid die ermee bereikt wordt, staat bekend als yin en yang, een bepaalde balans tussen alles. De tegenstelling of polariteit tussen yin en yang is een fundamentele natuurwet. Beiden zijn tegenovergestelde eenheden maar niet met elkaar in conflict. De aard van ying en yang is relatief, waarbij beiden aanwezig moeten zijn. Het is één. Geen donker zonder licht en geen leven zonder dood. De tegenstellingen in de natuur en in alle objecten en fenomenen zijn voortdurend in beweging en verandering. Vanwege deze afhankelijkheid is in het taoïsme balans en eenheid belangrijk. In het boek van de tao staat het volgende4:

Innovatie en ontwikkeling hebben nooit hetzelfde belang gehad als het in het kleinste details oefenen van wat we de ‘Dao’ noemen, om deze specifieke spiritualiteit steeds weer te condenseren in de vorm van beeld, poëzie, muziek, schilderkunst, thee­ ceremonie wierook overlevering etc.6

De werkmethode van Shao Fan vereist een grote concentratie. Het minutieus aanbrengen van de lijntjes die slechts zichtbaar worden wanneer de bezoeker het doek van dichterbij bekijkt. Waardoor het werkproces iets weg heeft van meditatie.

Vergelijkbaar met het idee van ‘wu-wei’ in het taoïsme: afstand nemen, rust vinden, jezelf terugvinden, meegaan met de stroom en leven zonder verspilling van kracht of energie door inzicht te hebben in de principes, structuren en wetmatigheden van mens en natuur.

Dieren Een aap, een arend maar toch vooral konijnen vormen het onderwerp van Shao Fans kunstwerken. Het konijn is in China net zoals in het Westen een vrij banaal dier. Onopvallende en vaak voor komend, ondanks zijn status als het vierde dier in de twaalfjaarlijkse cyclus van de Chinese dierenriem volgens de Chinese kalender.

Het konijn wordt dan vaak deze karaktereigenschappen toegekend: rechtschapen, intuïtief, gevoelsmatig en voorzichtig. Shao Fan kwam door een simpel toeval tot het schilderen van dit dier. Het onderwerp diende zich aan. Bij een bezoek aan een vriend merkte hij een paar konijnen op. Hij vond dat ze nogal klein behuisd waren.

Bij een volgend bezoek vroeg die vriend of Shao Fan zelf geen konijn wou voor in zijn binnentuin. Hij aanvaardde het en kocht er nog eentje om het andere dier gezelschap te houden. Binnen de kortste keren werd zijn hele binnentuin bevolkt met konijnen. Ze observerend vanuit zijn atelier, besloot Fan om ze te schilderen en te tekenen.

De portretten van de dieren op doek en op rijstpapier zijn enorm. Dit doet Shao Fan bewust. Hoe willekeurig het onderwerp zich ook aandiende, des te intentioneel is de boodschap die erachter schuilgaat. Geheel schatplichtig aan het taoïsme bepleit hij een gelijkheid tussen mens en dier. Om dit kracht bij te zetten, werkt hij op groot formaat. Het konijn kijkt je letterlijk aan. Een beleving die we in het dagelijkse leven nooit zullen ervaren. Fan roept met zijn werken op tot bescheidenheid. Het konijn of een dier in het algemeen neemt enkel datgene wat nodig is om te (over)leven. Door hier een voorbeeld aan te nemen zouden mens en natuur harmonieuzer kunnen samenleven. Laozi verkondigde dat ‘eenvoud’ de hoogste vorm van onschuld is.7 Traditie Ik wil wijzen op wat de traditie te bieden heeft!8 Shao Fan vermengt in zijn kunst het verleden en de toekomst. De tijd is voor de kunstenaar niet belangrijk maar wel de vrijheid in zijn hoofd om te reizen in die tijd.

Verleden, heden en toekomst zijn altijd met elkaar verbonden en zijn één. Deze traditie is voor Fan actueel en hij heeft het dan uitdrukkelijk over de Chinese traditie.

Want hij maakt een fundamenteel onderscheid tussen het westen en het oosten.

Beide tradities zijn, volgens de kunstenaar, onverenigbaar. Shao Fan werkt binnen de Chinese traditie waarbij hij bewust zijn eigen persoon zoveel mogelijk naar de achtergrond plaatst. Een goed werk spreekt namelijk voor zichzelf en overschrijdt hierdoor de grenzen van tijd en ruimte. Fan heeft dan ook geen hoge pet op van de

De invloed van de traditie zien we ook terug in de driedimensionale werken van Shao Fan. Over het ontstaan van de ontmantelde Ming stoelen getuigt de kunstenaar dat ze ontstonden door een interesse naar de ingenieuze verbindingen tussen de elementen. Door het uiteen halen van de gebruiksvoorwerpen ontdekte Fan hoe ze in elkaar zaten. Het verleidde er hem toe om dit zichtbaar te maken. In het werk Ming Beard No. 5 uit 2006 laat Shao Fan de verwijzing naar de stoel achterwegen en toont hij enkel het zeer esthetische en ingenieus opgebouwde object. De recente werken suggereren nog wel een gebruiksvoorwerp maar tonen slechts enkele essentiële lijnen die de omtrek markeren. Ze lijken getekend in de lucht.

benaming hedendaagse kunstenaar. Wat hij wel belangrijk acht, is het verder zetten van een bepaalde Chinese esthetiek. Geluk wordt, volgens Fan, ook bereikt door de herhaling en de herinnering of het nu om het onderwerp gaat of de toegepaste technieken of de esthetiek. Dit uit hij met name in zijn inkttekeningen en ontmantelde stoelen en objecten.

Het tekenen op papier neemt in China nog steeds een belangrijke plek in. De schil­­der­techniek kende haar eerste grote bloeiperiode tijdens de Song-dynastie (960–1279). Shao Fan ervaart een grote verwantschap met deze periode waarin naast de schilderkunst ook de kalligrafie beschouwt werd als één van de vier kunsten die de ‘literati’ of intellectuelen bestudeerden. Op een meditatieve wijze plaatst hij met de punt van het penseel de inkt op het papier. De duizenden lijntjes verraden de link met de kalligrafie en vormen een zachte atmosferische overgang tussen konijn en achtergrond. Hij gebruikt nooit een model maar werkt spontaan vanuit wat hij weet.

Het dier wordt meestal frontaal geportretteerd. De achtergronden zijn afwezig of een op de traditionele Shanshui schilderkunst gebaseerd landschap. Waarbij Shanshui letterlijk betekent ‘bergen en wateren’. Dit traditioneel Chinees genre in de landschapsschilderkunst bloeide tijdens de Song periode, de gouden eeuw van Chinese landschapsschilderkunst.

Epiloog Shao Fan schrijft zich graag in in een groter verhaal. Hij is op zoek naar een universele waarheid. Het taoïstische gedachtegoed doorspekt de vele kunstwerken en gedachten van de kunstenaar. Shao Fan laat zich niet verblinden door de huidige consumptiemaatschappij maar ook niet door invloeden die vanuit het westen China bereiken. In de keuze van de onderwerpen blijft hij dicht bij zichzelf. De technieken zijn gegrond in de eeuwenoude Chinese traditie. Geconcentreerd werkt hij verder in een wereld die balanceert tussen de waarheid en de illusie.

Waardering voor ‘het oude’ In de Chinese cultuur zetelt ‘het oude’ in een voorbehouden domein, waar het staat voor de sublimering van schoonheid.

Kunst in de Griekse oudheid verheerlijkte de jeugd, een gezond lichaam, de opwinding en overvloed. De uitgangspunten van de klassieke Chinese esthetiek zijn daarentegen van een flegmatieke en degelijke oudheid, ruw uitgehouwen, onopgesmukt en solitair.

Deze esthetiek van ‘het oude’ wordt gevoed door een gelaagde en grondig ontwikkelde cultuur, en maakt tevens de specifieke kwaliteiten van de Chinese kunst en cultuur zichtbaar.

‘Het oude’ en ‘het sfeer van het oude’ zijn de exclusieve drijfveren in mijn werk.

Ik verwijs naar mijn kunstpraktijk, ervaring en kennis als ‘waardering voor het oude’. Dit type waardering is eenvoudig en onopgesmukt: het is getekend door jaren van winderosie, het is als rivieren die de zee bereiken, de zomer die zwicht voor de herfst, het vlakke terrein na doorstane gevaren, de intrede van kinderlijke onschuld in de latere levensjaren. Het vraagt geen groot vakmanschap of grote kennis, maar eerder het temmen van een onstuimige geest, een retraite in eenvoud en kinderlijke regressie, een terugkeer naar de natuur.

De oude Chinese cultuur maakt diepgaand gebruik van de sfeer van de oudheid, omdat deze aandringt op het samengaan van licht en donker. Respect voor ‘het oude’ is alom tegenwoordig in de samenleving: in het maatschappelijke leven, in de uiting en de waardering van kunst, of het nu gaat om een melange van oude jade, een grijsgroen patina op een koperen object, de thee-aanslag die in de kieren van een in een zand gebakken theepot kruipt, of de traditie van de Laoqiang-opera. In de kalligrafische schilderkunst in het bijzonder gelooft men dat de bekwaamheid van de kalligraaf groeit met de jaren, ervan uitgaande dat men onbekwaam ter wereld komt, om gaandeweg bekwaam te worden. Tuinen, wouden en de ouderdom worden geroemd als de best mogelijke staat van zijn.

In de kookkunst vinden we vele voorbeelden van waardering voor wat oud is: oude soep, oude azijn, oude tofu en lang gerijpte likeur. In het maatschappelijke concept van familie worden ouderen gerespecteerd als symbool van wijsheid en deugd.

In de hoofse traditie was de oudste de meest bekwame en degene die fungeerde

‘Het oude’ is het ontstijgen aan tijd. In I Ching (Boek der Veranderingen) – een van de vijf klassieke teksten van de Chinese confuciaanse traditie – reïncarneren de zon en de maan beurtelings om uitdrukking te geven aan de eeuwige onveranderlijkheid van verandering. In mijn visie vormt dit de kern van de Chinese cultuur en kunst, en de schatkamer van haar unieke waarden. Meditatie, thee- en wierookceremonies en het ritueel bespelen van de shakuhachi-fluit keren op vergelijkbare wijze steeds terug in geënsceneerde herhalingen. Hun onophoudelijke toepassing loopt uiteindelijk uit op ‘het oude’.

Waardering voor ‘het oude’

als een toonbeeld van deugdzaamheid. Ook in uitdrukkingen als ‘ridder’ en ‘heilige’ wordt gealludeerd op het begrip leeftijd. In de Chinese woorden voor God, Lao Tse, leraar, thuis, echtgeno(o)t(e), kameraad, taoïstische priester en vaardigheid is het Chinese karakter voor ‘oud’ telkens één van de bouwstenen. In een andere context heeft ‘oud’ echter de betekenis van ‘kleinste’ gekregen: ‘oude meid’ en ‘oude knobbel’ zijn koosnamen voor de jongste dochter en zoon. In veel verschillende verbanden wordt ‘oud’ gebruikt om een gevoel van eerbied over te brengen, of een overtuiging dat iets van de hoogste kwaliteit is.

Men kan stellen dat ‘oud’ een speciale ‘Chinese manier is om schoonheid te beoordelen. Op het moment dat ik naar de toekomst kijk, krimpt deze al het verleden in.

Het ‘hier en nu’ bestaat alleen op het meest immateriële niveau; de toekomst en het verleden liggen beide in dezelfde richting. Met ‘Waardering voor het oude’ heb ik geprobeerd de tijd te ontstijgen, en zodoende is de tijd tenietgedaan en heeft hij zijn betekenis verloren. Wat mij betreft zijn de middelen om deze toestand te bereiken de enige die er werkelijk toe doen.

h.-n.j. Wat heeft u bij de kunst gebracht en wat herinnert u zich uit uw jeugd en van het contact met uw ouders en grootouders? s.f.

Voor zover ik in de voetsporen treed van mijn ouders, die beide kunstenaar waren, is het geen verrassing dat ik in de kunst werk. Zoals het gezegde luidt, valt de appel niet ver van de boom. U vraagt naar mijn herinneringen. Weet u, ik denk dan vooral aan de zeventiger jaren, toen ik nog maar zes of zeven jaar oud was. In die tijd was er in China een groot tekort aan goederen. Er was gebrek aan alles. Voor mijn geestesoog zie ik ook de prachtige jurken van de moeder van mijn moeder. Mijn grootouders maakten deel uit van de Mantsjoerijse etnische groep, de op één na grootste minderheid, die de laatste dynastie stichtte. De klassieke meubels waarvoor mijn vader zich interesseerde maakten een grote indruk op me, terwijl ik de nieuwe meubels lelijk vond. In mijn ogen was alles wat oud was een blijk van grote schoonheid en alles wat nieuw was een van slechte smaak. Daardoor stonden oud en nieuw in schril contrast tot elkaar. Natuurlijk bestonden er op dat moment ook objecten die nieuw waren en toch heel mooi, maar ik had daar geen oog voor. Mijn ouders, beiden docent aan de kunstacademie, werden tijdens het bewind van Mao naar het platteland gestuurd om fysiek werk te verrichten. Doordat zij daar meerdere jaren hebben doorgebracht konden wij elkaar niet zien.

Hierdoor ben ik opgevoed door de grootmoeder die ik reeds noemde. Zij was ook degene die mij vele traditionele objecten heeft laten zien en mij inwijdde in de rijkdom van de oude cultuur. Zie daar de zaden die gezaaid werden. Toen ik tien jaar oud was, keerden mijn ouders terug. Dankzij hun rehabilitatie in de tussentijd hebben zij toen hun oorspronkelijke beroep kunnen hervatten. Toen ik twintig was, hebben zij mij de westerse techniek van olieverf geleerd. Het was bij ons in die tijd heel modern en werd op de kunstacademies onderwezen. Dat was mijn wereld. Ik kon

U werd zeker ook ingewijd in de kunst van het kalligraferen?

s.f.

Ja, natuurlijk, dat is de ziel van de Chinese schilderkunst. Ik werd door mijn grootmoeder al ingewijd in de kunst van het kalligraferen nog voor ik naar school ging. Zelfs al oefende ik keer op keer in haar bijzijn, het zou nog steeds erg aanmatigend van mij zijn om mijzelf te beschrijven als een meester in die kunst. Toch lijdt het geen twijfel dat kalligrafie mijn werk sterk heeft beïnvloed. Kalligrafische elementen kunnen worden ontdekt in veel van mijn kunstwerken. Als we bijvoorbeeld eens van dichtbij naar de werken in inkt kijken, en meer specifiek naar de oogleden van het konijn, dan is het kalligrafische aspect onmiskenbaar. Zoals u weet, zijn in China kalligrafie en schilderen met inkt nauw met elkaar verweven. Het was met die gedachte in het achterhoofd dat ik het konijn uitbeeldde in een schildering met inkt. Als u de lijnvoering van dichterbij beziet, kunt u zien hoe de penseelstreek steeds smaller wordt. Het figuur van het konijn bestaat uit een onmetelijk aantal brede en smalle lijnen, zoals in klassieke inktschilderingen.

Het schone en het oude

samen met mijn vakgenoten profiteren van die trend. Toen ik dertig was heb ik eindelijk ervaren hoe de vroeger geplante zaden langzaam maar zeker vruchten begonnen te dragen. Mijn bron bleek de traditionele cultuur, verenigd met de westerse.

h.-n.j. Een gedachtesprong. Welke rol speelt concentratie bij de penseelstreken van uw inktschilderingen? s.f.

Zoals ik al aangaf, bestaat de schildering uit duizenden lijnen. Op sommige plaatsen wekt het de indruk uit laagjes te zijn opgebouwd.

Daar waar het in elkaar schuift richting zwart heb ik de streken dekkend aangebracht, waardoor het geheel iets ruimtelijks krijgt. Dit kost niet alleen heel veel tijd, maar het vraagt ook een grote concentratie. Wie er dicht op gaat staan, kan zien hoe het beeld is opgebouwd. Het proces van het schilderen heeft te maken met meditatie, dat zijn oorsprong vindt in het boeddhisme uit India. Toen het boeddhisme in China geïntroduceerd werd, versmolt het met het taoïsme en met de kosmologische ideeën daarbinnen over hemel en aarde. Het grote verschil tussen oosterse en westerse kunst is gelegen in het streven van het westen naar innovatie en verandering. Dat betekent dat iemand breekt met de oude wereld om een nieuwe te kunnen scheppen. In China heeft kunst hier niets mee te maken, maar veel meer met de natuurlijke wet, de tao. Volgens die wet is de hemel iets onveranderlijks, en schilders trachten dan ook, ieder in overeenstemming met hun eigenheid, dat te benaderen. In de Chinese cultuur heeft het concept tao de betekenis van een principe waar de hele kosmos op gebouwd is en dat alles doordringt. Ongelukkigerwijs volgt de

meerderheid van de hedendaagse kunstenaars in China de ideeën uit het westen en het ideaal van individualisme. Als kunstenaar verstop ik mij met mijn gedachten, ideeën en associaties achter mijn werk, zodat de kijker gedwongen wordt om zelf te ontrafelen wat eronder ligt. h.-n.j.

Uw kunst lijkt een aangeboren spiritualiteit te bezitten.

s.f.

U neemt mij de woorden uit de mond. Toen ik werkte aan de serie schilderijen van dieren, heb ik vermeden om konijnen naar de natuur te schilderen. In plaats daarvan heb ik hen van binnenuit uit mijn hart vormgegeven. Mijn subjectiviteit is de bron voor wat ik maak. Er zijn in wezen twee niveaus: aan de ene kant mijn eigen intellectuele werkelijkheid en mijn denkbeelden over de gelijkwaardigheid van mens en dier. Ik pleit voor een harmonieuze verbinding tussen die twee, en meer respect voor de wereld waarin wij leven. Aan de andere kant is er het schilderij, ofwel de kunst zelf. Zolang het schilderij nog in mijn atelier is, is het betekenisloos.

Het krijgt alleen betekenis wanneer het in de publieke belangstelling staat en vrij toegankelijk is. Uiteindelijk zijn het de mensen die het werk zijn betekenis geven.

h.-n.j. Kunt u nog iets zeggen over uw techniek en de reden dat u wisselt tussen schilderen met olieverf en inkt? s.f.

In het geval van een inktschildering is het beeld met het penseel geschreven, in het andere geval is het geschilderd. In het westen spreekt men over het scheppen van een kunstwerk. In China schilderen we een beeld niet, we schrijven het. Ik bedoel dat de punt van ons penseel afgerond is, niet plat en lang zoals van de penselen die in het westen gebruikt worden. U vraagt naar mijn beweegredenen om te wisselen tussen de verschillende technieken. Dit heeft te maken met twee verschillende gemoedstoestanden. Schrijven met het penseel is een bepaalde manier om zichzelf in lucht te veranderen. Hoe meer iemand zijn gevoelens erin legt, des te meer voelt diegene zich bevrijd.

Diegene bevrijdt zichzelf van de enorme last van zijn eigen gevoelens.

Misschien is het gevoel dat opkomt tijdens het werken met olieverf minder spiritueel. Ik sprak over lichter worden, iets wat ik al voel gebeuren terwijl ik werk. Voor veel hedendaagse westerse kunstenaars is niet zelden het scheppen zelf een beproeving geworden waar iemand doorheen moet gaan om een moment van voldoening en bevrijding te ervaren aan het einde. Voor mij is schilderen, en daarmee bedoel ik het hele pad naar het voltooide schilderij, de beslissende factor en op zichzelf al een bevrijding.

Voor dit onderwerp wil ik terugkeren naar het idee van de schoonheid van het oude. Zoals ik al zei aan het begin, zijn voor mij het oude en het schone bijna synoniem. Kleur ontstaat uit licht, dat wil zeggen van buitenaf. Bijna al mijn schilderijen zijn zonder lichtbronnen, en de as waaromheen de composities zijn opgebouwd loopt door het midden. Deze symmetrie is een expressie van de natuur. Het maakt niet uit of u naar bladeren kijkt of onze planeet aarde, de as ligt altijd in het midden.

h.-n.j. Wat is het verschil in benadering van het konijn in olieverf en de andere keer in inkt? s.f.

Het schone en het oude

h.-n.j. Nog een formele vraag over het kleurenpalet van uw schilderijen. Het palet is zeer beperkt en gaat van subtiele bruintinten via wit naar zwart; nu en dan zijn er kleuraccenten te vinden in de schilderijen. Waarom geen andere kleuren?

Zowel hier als daar gaat het om dezelfde gemoedstoestanden en gedachten, alleen de stijl, de techniek, het medium en het materiaal verschillen. Zelfs in de oudheid beperkten de klassieke Chinese kunstenaars zich niet tot één vakgebied of één medium. Dus behalve schilderijen maak ik ook beeldhouwwerken uit hout en metaal. Daarnaast ontwerp ik tuinen, werk ik als architect en maak ik meubels. In reactie op de vraag naar de reden van mijn interdisciplinaire werk is mijn antwoord dat wat ik doe niets van doen heeft met interdisciplinariteit. Het is meer een kwestie van verschillende wegen die naar een en hetzelfde doel leiden.

In mijn werkwijze is de keuze voor een bepaald medium een spontaan besluit.

h.-n.j. Laten we overgaan op het frêle beeldhouwwerk uit hout dat, in al zijn abstractie, eruitziet als haar. s.f.

Ja, dat is waar. Ming Beard No. 5 (2006) is een spijkerloze slanke houten constructie die uit elkaar kan worden gehaald en weer in elkaar gezet.

De vorm, die doet denken aan de armleuning van een stoel, hangt samen met de stijl uit de Mingdynastie. Bij beschouwing van de meubels uit die periode valt de schoonheid van hun vorm op, die verbluffend mooi is in al zijn eenvoud. Zoals u weet, maak ik ook meubels. Zelfs daarin vinden we een echo van de ziel van kalligrafie. Op deze manier neemt de gestalte van een stoel de vorm aan van een penseelstreek.

h.-n.j.

Betekent dit dat ook uw meubelontwerpen te maken hebben met schrijven?

s.f.

Dat is precies hoe het is. De penseelstreken en het schrijven zijn de basis van de Chinese schilderkunst tot op heden, ook al werden er later andere vernuftige technieken ontwikkeld. Maar ook daarbij is schrijven de grondslag of het beginpunt van alles. In een tijd waarin de moderne 17

technologie schijnbaar het laatste woord heeft, is reflecteren op het schrijven een soort terugkeer naar de wortels van onze cultuur. Ziet u daar aan de muur de kopie van een afbeelding van Li Tang? Het is een van mijn favoriete schilderijen uit de Songdynastie. Het origineel is te vinden in het keizerlijk paleis in Taipei. h.-n.j. Terwijl ik naar u luister, krijg ik de indruk dat u liever tijdens de Songdynastie geboren had willen worden. s.f.

Ja, daar slaat u de spijker op de kop. Wat ons onderscheidt van onze voorouders is het internationale karakter, de globalisering en het constante streven naar materiële zaken. Door de geschiedenis te bestuderen kunnen we leren hoeveel waarde er tijdens de Songdynastie aan de kwaliteit van leven werd gehecht. In die tijd beleefden de poëzie en uitvoerende kunsten zoals theater hun gouden tijdperk. Schilderen en theater waren zelfs belangrijker voor de machthebbers dan economische groei. Dat is de reden dat de geschiedenisboeken hen portretteren als corrupte of overgevoelige zwakkelingen. Dat zou zo kunnen zijn, maar vergeleken met ons stonden de mensen toen aanzienlijk dichter bij het leven. Zij waren niet bezig met de ontwikkeling van technologie om hun productiviteit te verhogen, maar veeleer met de schone taak om de kwaliteit van leven te vergroten. Dat was hun ziel en zaligheid. Hun politieke beleid was zo zwak dat in het jaar 1276 de heerschappij van de Song in het zuiden tot een einde kwam met de verovering van Hangzhou door de Mongolen. Op het gebied van de kwaliteit van leven is de Songdynastie echter een toonbeeld.

h.-n.j.

Hoe zag het leven er toen uit?

s.f.

Ik probeer zo ongeveer te leven zoals de mensen toen. Overdag schilder ik, ’s avonds nodig ik mijn vrienden uit. We drinken thee en roken samen.

In plaats van te streven naar meer, leid ik een comfortabel, rustig en stil leven. Door mijn fascinatie heb ik boeken over de Songdynastie gelezen.

Hoewel er geen afbeeldingen zijn van het dagelijks leven, zijn er boeken over literatuur, schilderkunst en muziek. Ik heb een aantal van de traditionele literaire werken gelezen. Ik kan u ook een muziekinstrument laten zien uit de Songdynastie, het heet een zhu. Men speelde veel en graag op de zhu.

h.-n.j. Ik zou meer willen weten over de culturele verschillen waar u het al eerder even over had. s.f.

Wat zijn uw beweegredenen om terug te keren naar de traditie?

s.f.

Hoewel ik vroeger niet kon begrijpen of mij kon verhouden tot wat mijn grootmoeder mij vertelde over de traditionele cultuur, waren dit wel de zaden waar later de vruchten uit zouden groeien. De westerse cultuur kan worden vergeleken met een aanhoudende regenbui waar men niet aan kan ontsnappen. Zodra u over de drempel stapt, bent u er onvermijdelijk aan blootgesteld. U heeft geen keus. Daarentegen is, voor mij, de traditionele Chinese cultuur als het grondwater. Het bestaat beneden ons, en wordt alleen zichtbaar door te graven. Want tijdens de decennialange Culturele Revolutie is, zoals u weet, alles wat traditioneel was, vernietigd.

Het schone en het oude

als voorbeeld nemen: zijn composities kunnen alleen in hun geheel begrepen worden, als men hen van begin tot eind beluisterd heeft. Het Chinese muziekinstrument is anders. Als ik bijvoorbeeld op de zhu speel, dan vormt één ademhaling één beweging, en de volgende beweging heeft niets met de vorige te maken. Iedere beweging staat op zichzelf.

Er wordt geen verhaal verteld, maar eerder een verzameling van scènes, hoorbaar gemaakt door de wind die door de bamboe blaast. De volgende bewegingen verwijzen weer naar andere zaken. Van hieruit kan men een parallel trekken met het schilderen van het konijn, in zoverre dat het uit meerdere penseelstreken bestaat. Westerse kunst, in contrast met de Chinese, plaatst het individu in het centrum. In de Chinese kunst ligt de focus meer op de vereniging van mens en natuur. Zo ook voor mij, het heeft te maken met de wijze waarop een persoon zich opent voor de natuur. Het onderwerp is geen toeval en ook niet een idee dat uit de lucht komt vallen, het heeft te maken met mijn levenservaringen en mijn visie op het leven en de wereld. De oude Chinese kunst is een bron waaruit ik net zoveel ideeën put als uit de westerse. De laatste werkt als een spiegel, waarin onze traditionele kunst preciezer kan worden geobserveerd en anders begrepen. De ene kunst maakt als het ware de andere compleet.

De botsing van de Chinese en de westerse cultuur wordt door de één gezien als een gelukkige, door de ander als een ongelukkige botsing.

Deze situatie heeft nooit eerder bestaan in de geschiedenis, noch hier noch daar. De Chinese kunstenaars die nu onder de invloed van beide culturen leven, moeten kiezen uit twee alternatieven. Hetzelfde geldt voor de geneeskunde. Als bijvoorbeeld iemand in China een dokter wil raadplegen, moet diegene beslissen hoe hij wil worden behandeld: traditioneel of volgens de westerse methoden.

h.-n.j. U spreekt zoveel over uw grootmoeder dat ik mij afvraag wat voor vrouw zij geweest is?

Als de hoogontwikkelde dochter van een aristocratische Mantsjoerijse Mandarijn, geboren aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw, leefde zij tijdens de Qingdynastie en het Mao-tijdperk. Toen haar vader in grote moeilijkheden verkeerde, was zij de enige die hem bijstond. Haar echtgenoot overleed aan een mysterieuze ziekte bij terugkeer in China na een studieperiode in Japan. Daarna verhuisde mijn grootmoeder - die ook mijn moeder heeft leren schilderen - naar Peking met haar drie kinderen.

Tijdens de Culturele Revolutie heeft zij eens, uit angst, een autobiografie verbrand. Haar leven is allesbehalve gemakkelijk geweest, dus sprak zij de wens uit - gebaseerd op haar negatieve ervaringen - dat geen van haar kinderen terecht zou komen in de politiek, het leger of het bedrijfsleven.

Op deze manier riep zij drie taboes in het leven, in de hoop dat haar kinderen een vak zouden leren. Omdat, in mijn ogen, kunstenaars boven alle vaklieden staan, hebben wij haar droom waargemaakt.

h.-n.j. Aangezien u net het vakmanschap heeft genoemd, heb ik een vraag die te maken heeft met het maken van meubels: wie heeft u dit ambacht onderwezen? s.f.

Op dit gebied ben ik autodidact. Ik heb de kennis en de praktische details vergaard, deels door middel van boeken. Maar ook dankzij de hulp van een assistent, die timmerman is van beroep. Samen met hem demonteerde ik meubels, om hun constructie en de verbindingen te bestuderen. Als gevolg daarvan vormen de oude meubelstukken onze modellen.

h.-n.j. Uw grootmoeder was een gepassioneerd hoeder van de oude cultuur in alle opzichten. Heeft die oude cultuur een grotere rijkdom dan de nieuwe? s.f.

Het is niet aan mij om te oordelen welke cultuur rijker is of beter. Toch is de meer dan tweeduizend jaar oude geschiedenis zo uitgestrekt dat het een onbevattelijke complexiteit bezit.

h.-n.j.

Oneindigheid of het oneindige lijken belangrijk voor u.

s.f.

Hier zou ik Nietzsche willen aanhalen. Hij zegt: de mens leeft tien procent van zijn leven in lijden, een andere tien procent gelukkig en tachtig procent in verveling. Daarbinnen vervullen zij hun taak. De betekenis van hun leven bestaat in het reduceren van verveling. Om die tien procent geluk te bereiken, vinden de Europeanen apparaten uit. De mensen in het oude China daarentegen omarmen die verveling. Zij halen er hun plezier uit en daarom willen zij niet eens van hun verveling af. Dat is de werkelijke reden voor de voormalige achterstand van China en voor het collectieve gebrek aan interesse voor de ontwikkeling van technologie en apparaten.

Foreword In 2018, the successful A Chinese Journey: The Sigg Collection exhibition presented visitors to Het Noordbrabants Museum with an anthology of contemporary Chinese art. Spread throughout all the museum’s exhibition halls, visitors were introduced to thirty-six intriguing works of art by some of China’s leading artists. Tradition, spirituality, and the social and political reality in China were the main themes of the exhibition. The works were on loan from the collection of the Swiss collector Dr Uli Sigg, who was generous enough to allow us to make a selection from his collection of over 2,500 works of art before a large part of the collection was permanently moved to the M+ museum in Hong Kong.

One of the artists featured in this exhibition, Shao Fan, stood out. In one of the rooms was a life-size drawn portrait of a rabbit looking at the visitor with a piercing gaze and, in another room, stood a deconstructed chair consisting of Plexiglas and elements of a Ming-style chair. Both works were highly admired and especially the ink drawing of the rabbit on rice paper drew the fascination of visitors. This was sufficient impetus to invite the artist back two years later, so that the Netherlands could be become more familiar with the fascinating oeuvre of Shao Fan. The Shao Fan: Between Truth and Illusion exhibition at Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch presents the work of an exciting name in the world of contemporary art. The first solo exhibition of this Chinese contemporary artist in the Netherlands opens on 15 February 2020, reasserting the ambition of Het Noordbrabants Museum to introduce leading contemporary artists to the Netherlands.

Shao Fan occupies a unique position in contemporary Chinese art. His work combines art and design with extensive knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture. He is a master of the classic ink-drawing technique, which features animals such as rabbits, apes, and falcons as the protagonists of his impressive works. Shao Fan sees these animals as archetypes and hybrid creatures that are somewhere between human and animal. He also produces oil paintings in which the traditional shan sui landscapes are reinterpreted. Mountains and rivers are at the forefront of these works, with waterfalls and mountain paths featuring as common elements.

Shao Fan is also one of the first Chinese artists to explore the boundaries between visual art and furniture with ornamental wooden sculptures that refer to traditional Ming furniture. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is therefore an honour for the museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch to welcome the work of this great artist in the Netherlands.

Shao Fan Between Truth and Illusion When I want to see the future, I always look back. Time is a circle. For me the past and the future are in the same direction. It is a concept. In my recent work, paintings and sculptures somehow express this idea of a past and a future related. This results in a negation of time. Timelessness. Time has no significance. I paint the space.1

For Chinese artist Shao Fan, nothing is certain and he does not concern himself with trifling matters. Working in his studio in Beijing, he chooses to lose both his subject as well as his identity by voiding himself of human thoughts and desires. As a contemporary artist, Shao Fan does not place himself on a linear timeline in which he bases himself on artists of the past or compares himself to artists of the present.

Considering time to be circular rather than linear, he situates his art outside of the spectrum of time. On canvas, paper, and rice paper, Shao Fan paints and draws seemingly trivial animals, such as rabbits and apes, in an indefinable environment.

In this essay I make a cautious attempt to interpret the Taoist philosophy and to find its influence in his work. I explore this in three short chapters that address Taoism, the animals, and the tradition. While I am aware that Confucianism and Buddhism also play an important role in Chinese spirituality and that a great deal of interconnectedness has developed over the centuries, I will not analyse these philosophies in this essay.

Taoism The Tao Te Ching2 states that Tao cannot be expressed in words and therefore cannot be defined. Despite this famous paradox, Taoism does render itself open to certain explanations. The basic principle is that every living being is one with the Tao. The eternal Tao is the way, an indivisible and indescribable principle from which everything that exists flows forth. Taoism prescribes action without intention, for people to simply ‘go along’ with the eternal process of change. One can do nothing but to remain on the path of this search for the immutability of change. Taoism sees a connection between humanity and nature, between the microcosm and the macrocosm. Humanity is therefore fully integrated into the cosmos and does not occupy a privileged position. Everything is related in a continuous flow of cosmic energies, as Demetrio Paparoni writes about the work of Shao Fan.3 Fan paints

As an artist, Shao Fan wants to emulate the attitude of ‘the sage’ or Luohan. What it means to be a sage is further described in the book of the Tao5. Fan does not like to talk about his work, as the sage is said to be a good listener first and only speaks later. Shao Fan therefore prefers to work in peace than to talk about the process.

This is further sustained by the fact that words could never explain what is meant.

Like the sage, Fan is, given his proper education, competent in what he does. The book of Tao affirms that the sage puts himself last and finds himself in the foremost place.

Shao Fan works drawing from his inner strength, which is known as de in Taoism. It is, according to the Tao, that which is most present when we have just been born, when we still do everything spontaneously and do not ask ourselves how, what, or why we do things. The artist agrees with this, but it is also important to stress that Shao Fan’s works of art are part of a larger story: that of China. Fan explains this as follows:

what he encounters in nature and avoids searching for his subjects. Taoists believe that everything that you observe is distorted by your personal interpretation, that they are simply reflections of what we feel. Taoism removes these influences, and this is what Fan applies to his art. The oneness that this achieves is known as yin and yang, the balance between all things. The contrariness or polarity between yin and yang is a fundamental law of nature. They are opposite forces but are not in conflict with one another; their nature is relative, in which both must be present. They are one. There is no darkness without light and no life without death.

The contradictions in nature and in all objects and phenomena are in constant movement and change. Because of this dependence, balance and unity are important in Taoism. The book of Tao states the following4:

Innovation and development have never had the same importance as practising in the smallest details the ‘Dao’, to condense this specific spirituality over and over again in the form of image, poetry, music, painting, tea ceremony, incense tradition, etc.6

The working method that Shao Fan employs requires great concentration. The meticulous application of the lines that only become visible when the visitor takes a closer look at the canvas turn the work process into a form of meditation. This is similar to the concept of wu wei in Taoism: to take distance, find peace, find yourself again, to go along with the flow, and to live without wasting power or energy by understanding the principles, structures, and laws of man and nature.

Animals An ape, an eagle, but especially rabbits are the subject of Shao Fan’s work. Rabbits in China, just as in the West, are considered to be fairly ordinary animals: an inconspicuous and common creature, despite its status as the fourth animal in the twelve-yearly cycle of the Chinese zodiac in the Chinese calendar. The rabbit is often attributed characteristics such as righteousness, intuition, cautiousness, and being instinctive. It was a case of simple coincidence that Shao Fan painted this animal.

The subject presented itself to the artist when he noticed a few rabbits while visiting a friend. He felt that their living space was rather too small. On a following visit, this friend asked Shao Fan if he would like a rabbit to keep in his courtyard. He accepted the animal and bought another one to keep it company. In no time at all, his entire courtyard was populated with rabbits. Observing them from his studio, Fan decided to paint and draw them.

The portraits of the animals on canvas and on rice paper are immense. This was a conscious choice by Shao Fan. No matter how random the subject may have presented itself, the message behind it is all the more intentional. Fully indebted to Taoism, he advocates equality between humans and animals. To reinforce this call, he works in a large format where the rabbit is staring you in the face; an experience that we will never have in real life. With his work, Fan pleads for humility. The rabbit or an animal in general only takes what is necessary to survive. He asks that we take this as an example, so that humans and nature could live more in harmony with one another. This is in following with Laozi himself, who proclaimed that simplicity is the highest form of innocence.7 Tradition I want to show what tradition can offer!8 In his art, Shao Fan mixes the past and the present. Time is not important to the artist, but he treasures the freedom in his head to travel in that time. Past, present, and future are always connected and are one. This tradition is topical for Fan and he explicitly refers to the Chinese tradition, as he makes a definite distinction between the East and the West. For the artist, these two traditions are incompatible. Shao Fan works within the Chinese tradition in which he consciously places his own person in the background as much as possible. This is because good art speaks for itself, as it transcends the boundaries of space and time. Fan is therefore not very fond of the term ‘contemporary artist’. Instead, he values continuing a specific Chinese aesthetic. According to Fan, happiness is also achieved through repetition and remembrance, whether it concerns the subject, the applied techniques,

The influence of tradition can also be seen in the three-dimensional works of Shao Fan. The artist explains that the dismantled Ming chairs were created by an interest in the ingenious connections that bind the various elements together.

By disassembling the utilitarian objects, Fan discovered how they were put together and this enticed him to make this visible.

In his 2007 work Ming Beard No. 5, Shao Fan omits the reference to the chair and only shows the very aesthetic and ingeniously constructed object. His recent works still hint at a utilitarian object, but only show a few essential lines that mark the contours. It almost appears as if they have been drawn in the air itself.

Drawing on paper still occupies an important place in China. This particular painting technique experienced its first major boom during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Shao Fan feels a great affinity with this period in which, in addition to painting, calligraphy was regarded as one of the four arts studied by the ‘literati’ (intellectuals). In a meditative way, he uses the tip of the brush to place the ink on the paper. The thousands of lines betray the link with calligraphy and form a delicate atmospheric transition between rabbit and background. He never uses a model but works spontaneously from what he knows. The animals in his work are usually portrayed from the front. The backgrounds are absent or show a landscape based on the traditional shan shui style of painting. Shan shui literally translates to ‘mountain-water’. This traditional Chinese genre in landscape painting flourished during the Song dynasty, the golden age of Chinese landscape painting.

Epilogue Shao Fan likes to immerse himself in a bigger story in his search for universal truths. The artist’s many works of art and thoughts are interspersed with the Taoist philosophy. Shao Fan is not blinded by today’s consumer society, nor by influences from the West that reach China. In his choice of subjects, the artist remains true to himself and his techniques are grounded in the centuries-old Chinese tradition. He continues to work in a concentrated way in a world that hovers between truth and illusion.

Appreciation of Oldness In Chinese culture, ‘oldness’ resides in a rarefied realm, where it stands for the sublimation of beauty.

Ancient Greek art extolled youth, fitness, tension and abundance. The precepts of classical Chinese esthetics are, by contrast, of a stolid, solid antiquity, roughly-hewn, unadorned and solitary.

This esthetic as regards the ‘old’ is informed by a deeply-layered, thoroughly developed culture, and further manifests the qualities of Chinese art and culture.

‘Oldness’ and ‘The Realm of Oldness’ are the sole pursuits of my work. I refer to artistic practice, experience, and knowledge as ‘Appreciation of Oldness’. This kind of appreciation is plain and unadorned – it is years of wind erosion, rivers reaching the sea, summer yielding to autumn, the even plane after the perils have been braved, the onset of childlike innocence in the later years of life. It does not demand great skill and knowledge, but rather a quenching of the fiery spirit, a retreat into rusticity and infantile regression, a return to nature.

Ancient Chinese culture draws deeply on the air of antiquity, as it urges the accretion of light and dark. Respect for the ‘old’ is present in all areas of society in social life, cultural art and art appreciation - whether as a mélange of old jade, verdigris greening a copper artifact, tea leaching into and permeating a sand-fired earthenware teapot, or the tradition of Laoqiang opera. In calligraphic painting, in particular, it is believed that the skill of the calligrapher improves with age, urging that one is born inept, to become adept with age. Gardens, forests and old age are acclaimed as the optimal states of being.

In the culinary arts we find many examples of appreciation of the old – old soup, old vinegar, old tofu, and alcohol of considerable vintage. In the societal family, the elderly enjoy respect as emblems of wisdom and virtue. In the arts of chivalry, the eldest was the most skillful and the one who stood forth as a paragon of virtue.

Such expressions as ‘knight’ and ‘saint’ likewise hold associations approximating to age. The Chinese words for God, Lao Tse, teacher, home, husband, wife, good fellow, Taoist priest, and proficiency all contain the character ‘old’. In other contexts, however, ‘old’ has taken on the meaning of the smallest: ‘old girl’ and ‘old lump’ are terms of endearment for youngest sons and daughters. In many

‘Oldness’ is a transcendence of time. In the I Ching (Book of Changes) – one of the Five Classics of Chinese Confucian texts – the sun and the moon alternately reincarnate to express the eternal constancy of change, which in my view lies at the heart of Chinese culture and art, and which further forms the repository of its unique values.

Meditation, tea and incense ceremonies, and the ritual blowing of the shakuhachi flute likewise recur in staged iterations, whose unceasing application ultimately ends in ‘oldness’.

One might aver that ‘old’ is a special ‘Chinese-style’ method of appreciating esthetics.

different contexts, ‘old’ is used to convey a mood of reverence and a conviction that something is of the finest grade.

When I look to the future, it has already dwindled into the past. The ‘here-and-now’ exists at the most insubstantial level; the future and the past both lie in the same direction. With ‘Appreciation of Oldness’ I have sought to transcend time; and in doing so time has been negated and lost its meaning. As far as I am concerned, all that is important is the means of achieving this condition.

The Beautiful and the Old or A Life as Unhurried as it is Quiet A Conversation with Shao Fan

h.-n.j. What pushed you towards art, and what do you recall concerning your childhood and the relationship with your parents and grandparents? s.f.

Insofar as I follow in the footsteps of my parents, who were both artists, it’s no wonder that I also work artistically. As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. You ask about my memories. There, I think of the 70s above all, when I was just six or seven years old. At the time, an extreme shortage of goods prevailed in China. There was a lack of everything. In my mind’s eye, I also see the beautiful dresses of my maternal grandmother. My grandparents belonged to the Manchurian ethnic group, that is, the secondlargest minority, which had founded the last dynasty. The classical Chinese furniture in which my father was interested also left a great impression on me, while I found the new ones ugly. In my eyes, everything old was evidence of great beauty and everything new of bad taste. Consequently, old and new stood in stark contrast to each other. Surely at the time there were also things which were by all means beautiful among the new, but I had no eyes for them. My parents, who were both professors at the academy of art, were sent to do physical labor in the countryside during Mao’s time. Since they spent several years there, we couldn’t see each other. Due to this, I grew up with the grandmother I already mentioned. She was also the one who showed me many traditional things and introduced me to the richness of the old culture. Those were the seeds that were sown. When I was ten years old, my parents returned. Having been rehabilitated in the meantime, they were able to pursue their professions again. When I was twenty they taught me the oil painting which originated in the West and which was very modern with us and taught at the academies at the time. That was my world. I and my peers could benefit from this boom. Finally, at the age of thirty, I experienced how the old seed gradually bore fruit. My source was traditional culture, merged with the Western one.

You were surely also introduced to the art of calligraphy?

s.f.

Yes, of course, it is the spirit of Chinese painting. I was already introduced to the art of calligraphy by my grandmother before I started school. Even though I practiced it again and again in her presence, it would still be very presumptuous of me to describe myself as a master in it. Yet without a doubt, calligraphy has strongly influenced my work. Calligraphic elements can be discovered in many of my pieces. If we just take a general although close look at the ink works there, and especially at the eyelids of the rabbit, the calligraphic aspect is unmistakable. As you know, in China calligraphy and ink painting are closely interwoven with each other. It was precisely in this spirit that I depicted the rabbit using ink painting. Upon closer observation of the lines, you can recognise the ever narrowing brushwork.

The motif of the rabbit consists of an immense number of wider and narrower lines, like in classical ink painting.

h.-n.j. A mental leap. What role does concentration play in the brushstrokes of your ink painting? s.f.

As I already indicated before, the painting consists of a myriad of lines.

In some places, it appears laminary. There, where it elides more into black, I coated over the strokes through which the whole thing appears more spatial. Not only did this take up a lot of time, it also requires great concentration. Standing closely in front of it, one recognises how the picture is structured. The process of painting has to do with meditation, and this has its origins in the Buddhism that comes from India. After its introduction to China it merged with Taoism and the latter’s cosmological ideas of heaven and earth. The difference between Eastern and Western art lies in the West’s striving for innovation and change. That means one makes a break with the old world in order to create a new one. In China, it doesn’t have to do with this, but rather with the natural law, the Tao. Thereby, heaven is something unalterable and painters attempt, each according to their singularities, to approach this. In Chinese culture, the concept of Tao has the meaning of a principle that underpins the entire world and penetrates everything. Unfortunately, the majority of contemporary artists in China follow Western ideas and the ideal of individualism. As an artist, I step behind my works with my thoughts, ideas and associations, so that the viewer is forced to unravel what lies beneath it.

h.-n.j.

There seems to be something innately spiritual about your art.

s.f.

You took the words out of my mouth. While working on the series of animal paintings, I avoided painting the rabbits from nature. Instead

I created them from my interior my heart. What I produce has its source in my own subjectivity. There are basically two levels: on the one hand my own intellectual world and my views about equality between people and animals. I argue for a harmonious connection between the two, and more respect towards the world in which we live. On the other hand there is the painting, that is, the art itself; as long as a picture remains in my studio, it is meaningless. It only achieves meaning then, when it is in the public eye, and becomes freely accessible. Ultimately, humanity gives the work its meaning. h.-n.j. Maybe also a word about your technique and about why you switch between oil and ink painting? s.f.

In the case of ink painting the picture is written with the brush, in the other case it is painted. In the West one speaks of creating an artwork. We in China don’t paint a picture, we write it. Insofar, the tip of our brush is rounded, while those which are used in the West are flat and long. You ask about the reasons for switching between the different techniques. This has to do with two different feelings. Writing with the brush represents a form of turning oneself into air. Insofar as one expresses one’s inner feelings, one feels relieved. One frees oneself from the enormous burden of one’s own feelings. Perhaps the inner feeling which arises while painting in oil is less spiritual. I just spoke of becoming lighter, which I already feel while I am working. For contemporary Western artists creating itself is now not seldom an ordeal which one has to get through in order to experience a moment of gratification and release at the end. For me, painting, that is the path to the completed painting, is the deciding thing and a release already.

h.-n.j. Yet another formal question about the color palette of your paintings: it is much reduced and ranges from subtle brown tones through white to black; now and then accents of color can be found in the painting. Why no other colors? s.f.

In this context I will return again to the idea of the beauty of the old.

As I already said at the outset, the old and the beautiful are almost synonymous for me. The color comes from light, that is from outside.

Almost all my paintings are without light sources, and the axis around which compositions are constructed runs through the middle. This symmetry is an expression of nature. Whether you look at leaves or our planet earth, the axis is always located in the middle.

h.-n.j. What is different when you approach the motif of the rabbit in oil one time and in ink another time?

Here as well as there it has to do with the same feelings and thoughts, only the style, the technique, the medium and the material are different. Even in ancient times, the classical Chinese artists did not just limit themselves to one area or one medium. So in addition to painting I also make sculptures out of wood and metal. Besides being a garden artist I work as an architect and build furniture as well. In response to the question about the why of my interdisciplinary work my answer is that what I do has nothing to do with interdisciplinarity. Rather with different ways that lead to the same goal. In doing so, I decide on the medium spontaneously.

h.-n.j. Let us come to the delicate sculptural work out of wood which, if, what with all the abstraction, has the looks of hair. s.f.

Yes, this is true. Ming Beard (2006), a nail-less, slim, wooden construction, which can be taken apart and built back together, again ties in with the style of the Ming dynasty in its shape, which is reminiscent of the armrest of a chair. Seeing the furniture from this time period, one notices the beauty of their form, which is so stunning in its simplicity. As you know, I also produce furniture. Even it reflects something of the spirit of calligraphy. In this way, the appearance of a chair borrows the shape of a brushstroke.

h.-n.j.

That means your furniture also has something to do with writing?

s.f.

That’s how it is. The brushstrokes as well as the writing are the root of the art of Chinese painting until this day, although further ingenious techniques were developed later. Yet there too writing is the basis or the starting point of everything. In a time when modern technology apparently has the only say, the reflection on writing is a kind of return to the roots of our culture. Do you see the copy of a picture of Li Tang there on the wall? It is one of my favorite paintings from the Song dynasty. The original can be found in the imperial palace in Taipei.

h.-n.j. Listening to you, it occurs to me you would rather have been born during the Song dynasty. s.f.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head there. What separates us from our ancestors is the internationality, the globalization and the constant striving for material things. In studying history we can learn how much one considered quality of life during the Song dynasty. At the time poetry and performing arts like theatre experienced their golden age and painting and theatre were also more important for the rulers than an increase in productivity. This is why the history books portray them as sensitive weaklings or corrupt. That may be the case, but compared to us

the people then were significantly closer to life. They weren’t concerned with the development of technology to drive on productivity, but rather with the wonderful propagation of quality of life. That was their be all and end all. Their politics were so bad that in the year 1276 the rule of the Song in the south was ended through the conquest of Hangzhou by the Mongolians. In terms of quality of life, the Song dynasty is exemplary. h.-n.j.

How did one live back then?

s.f.

I basically try to live like people back then. During the day I paint, in the evening I invite friends over. We drink tea and smoke together. Instead of striving for more, I lead a life as comfortable as it is leisurely and quiet.

Since I am fascinated by the Song dynasty, I have read books about it.

Though there are no depictions of daily life. Yet there are books about literature, painting and music. I have read a few of the traditional literary works. I can also demonstrate an instrument from the Song Dynasty for you, it is called zhu. One had a great fondness for playing it.

h.-n.j. I would like to know more about the cultural differences which you have already touched upon. s.f.

The Western media differ very strongly from the Chinese ones; I already suggested this. Let us take the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as an example: his symphonies can only be understood as a whole, once one has heard them from beginning to end. The Chinese musical instrument is different. When, for example, I play on the zhu, then with one breath, and this forms one movement, which has nothing to do with the other. Each of them stands for itself. There is no story being told, but rather scenes which are made audible through the wind blowing through the bamboo. The following ones refer to other things. From here one can draw a parallel to the painting of the rabbit, insofar as it consists of multiple brushstrokes.

While, in contrast to the Chinese, Western art places the individual in the center, the Chinese one focuses more on the union between man and nature. With me too, it has to do with how a person opens up in nature. This subject, neither chance nor a sudden idea, has to do with my experiences and my perspective on life and the world. The old Chinese art is a source from which I draw ideas just as much as from the Western one. It works like a mirror, in which our traditional art can be more closely observed and differently understood. One art complements the other, as it were. The clash of Chinese and Western culture is seen as fortunate by the one and unfortunate by the other. Such a situation has never existed in history, neither here nor there. The Chinese artists who live today under the shelter of two cultures must choose between two alternatives. The same is true for medicine. For when someone in China wants to consult

What are the reasons for your return to tradition?

s.f.

Even though I could neither relate to nor understand what my maternal grandmother told me about traditional culture, it nevertheless sowed the seeds which later bore fruit. Western culture can be compared with pervasive rain which one cannot escape from. As soon as you step outside the door, you are unavoidably exposed to it. You have no choice. On the other hand, for me, traditional Chinese culture is like groundwater. It exists below us, and only becomes visible through digging. For, as you know, during the decade-long Cultural Revolution everything traditional was destroyed.

a doctor, they have to decide how they want to be treated, traditionally or according to Western ways.

h.-n.j. You speak so much about your grandmother that I ask myself what kind of woman she must have been? s.f.

As the well-educated daughter of an aristocratic Manchurian mandarin born at the end of the 90s of the century before last, she lived through the Qing dynasty as well as the era of Mao. When her father experienced great difficulties she was the only one who stood by him. Her husband died of a mysterious illness upon his return to China from studying in Japan. After that, my grandmother – from whom my mother also learned to paint - moved to Peking with her three siblings. During the Cultural Revolution, she burned a biography she had written out of fear. Having enjoyed anything but an easy life she expressed the desire – based on her negative experiences – that none of her children should enter into politics or the military and also not work in business. In doing so, she erected three taboos in the hope that her children would learn trades. Insofar as, in my view, artists are above all craftsmen, we have fulfilled her dream.

h.-n.j. Since you have just mentioned craftsmanship, I have a question related to making furniture: who taught you how to do that? s.f.

In this matter I am an autodidact, I acquired the knowledge and the practical details myself, partially by means of books. Yet also with the help of an assistant, who is a carpenter by trade. Together with him I took apart furniture. On the one hand to study their construction, on the other hand to see how they are interlocked. Consequently, the old furniture pieces are our models.

h.-n.j. For all intents and purposes, your grandmother was a passionate custodian of the old culture. Does it have a greater richness than the new one?

Far be it from me to judge whether it is richer or better. Yet it’s over twothousand year old history has expanded so much that it possesses an incomprehensible complexity.

h.-n.j.

Infinity or the infinite appear important to you.

s.f.

At this point I would like to cite Nietzsche. He says: humanity spends ten percent of their lives suffering, a further ten percent happy and eighty percent in boredom. Within this they complete their work. The meaning of their life consists in the reduction of boredom. In order to achieve the ten percent of happiness the Europeans invent tools. In contrast, the people in ancient China affirm boredom. They draw their pleasure from it and because of this they don’t even want to abolish boredom. That is the reason for China’s past backwardness and their collective disinterest in the development of technology and tools.
