WHEN KINDNESS AND PERSEVERANCE LEAD THE WAY

Shawna Pereira and Tara Cochrane connected as they say - through cobblestone, fundraising and motherhood. It did not take long to realize they shared common values, life experiences and ambition. Their zeal for bringing people together, supporting entrepreneurs’ and thoughtful gifting inspired a business platform. With a combined fifteen years of experience in media arts and production, Shawna and Tara’s vision was to build a Canadian gifting company that embodied their values and would create a movement to spread kindness, support female entrepreneurs and give back to the

Wonderkindcommunity.isanonline

Their WBE certification back in 2019 was a step in the right direction. Wonderkind almost immediately caught the attention of the Staples Promotional Products team at WBE Canada’s annual conference in November of 2019 and within the next year and a half, the companies collaborated on corporate projects that would bring Wonderkind sales to the six figure mark and created an opportunity to ship gift sets to over five countries. The impact on Wonderkind and their women-owned suppliers was incredible and much appreciated. Their service was recognized by Staples Promotional Products resulting in the company being recognized as the “2020 Top WBE Supplier” at the 2020 WBE Canada’s Excellence Awards.

gifting service founded in March 2019 specializing in corporate and event gifting and featuring Made in Canada products from majority women-owned and female founded businesses across the country. The company offers gifting that thoughtfully caters to the individual preferences by personalizing the gifts. Launching their website in September 2019 Wonderkind created a customized quiz. The interactive “Gifting Quiz” is where clients have the option to take the quiz for themselves or the ability to gift a “quiz experience,” a 90 second personality quiz that the receiver fills in. When completed, the Wonderkind team hand picks and wraps the gift set according to the answers submitted. Every gift is thoughtful and personalized to the receiver. Corporate branding is unique to each organization and the results are thoughtfully curated gift sets delivered with a lasting impression and social purpose. Wonderkind creates a movement we can feel good about by supporting a circular economy, female entrepreneurs, creators and their charitable partners.

While online and corporate gifting remains their main focus, Shawna and Tara decided to test the waters with a popup location in downtown Toronto for Mother’s Day in 2022.

“After only one year of business, we were thrilled to have received the 2020 WBE Top Supplier Award. As a new business at the time and facing such economic uncertainty, this was a huge accomplishment for Wonderkind and the platform we were building. It gave us confidence that the work we were doing was not only important to us but it mattered to our partners as well.” Tara Cochrane

“I’ve always said love is in the details. When care is placed behind gift-giving, the receiver feels it and its value significantly increases” Shawna Pereira

The post Covid world has created incredible challenges for corporations, small businesses and especially for women entrepreneurs. The reasons are many, the stories are all too common and yet the successes embolden us all. Wonderkind opened its doors in late 2019 and by March 2020, everything came to a screeching halt. Many corporate offices shuttered their offices, downsized and focused on

They currently have gift sets in three of The Bay locations, with very specific seasonal gift sets curated and differentiated for each location. The future looks bright for this creative duo.

All gift sets are carefully hand packaged and shipped from their studio located in downtown Toronto. One of their recent adjustments has been with their signature wooden chests. While the chests were a key part of Shawna and Tara’s vision setting out, supply chain issues and shipping costs as a result of the pandemic world, have necessitated a creative review. In keeping with their sustainability mantra, they have come up with high-end,

“We are very proud that we truly started something from nothing. I remember sketching our signature Wonderkind Wood Chest on the back of some Christmas wrapping paper and 4 years later we are shipping gift sets around the world!” Shawna Pereira

whether your gift arrives in a wooden chest or newly designed, eco-friendly cardboard, you will never see cellophane. Number one rule!

There is a large and reverberating impact in corporate gifting. More often than not a business will have a large budget for gifting and extensive geographical reach, creating incredible exposure for the carefully selected suppliers that Wonderkind has chosen. When a corporation sends a Wonderkind gift to their clients, they know that sustainability and social purpose are key factors in those selections. Wonderkind collaborates with over 100 + small businesses across Canada ranging from candle makers, glass blowers and artists to skin care manufacturers and food producers.

Wonderkind is in the business of creativity. Their studio has also hosted hands-on workshops and small events. Field trips and experiences with the team and getting “outside the walls and minds” to attend workshops, speaker series, and fundraisers fuel the juices. Giving back is part of Wonderkind’s mission and they currently partner with three Canadian charities, Second Harvest Food Rescue, Opportunity International Canada and Dress for Success Toronto. An annual donation is made to each charity.

“Connection is inherently tied to giving – the giving of time, energy, and sometimes, gifts! Enabling people to enhance their connection with friends and loved ones through thoughtful, Canadian-made gifts is rivaled only by Wonderkind’s commitment to giving back to the community. It’s something I’m fiercely proud of and can’t wait to evolve.” Tara Cochrane

Covid hitting them with a new reality - , their overhead, including their workshop/warehouse in Toronto and inventory was huge and like so many businesses, without a full year of revenues they did not qualify for government Covid Assistance. Covid allowed Tara and Shawna some time to review and re-assess - as they call itlightbulb twisting time. The increasing cost of buying Canadian and skyrocketing transportation costs are making the delivery of jam from BC and handcrafted items from New Brunswick to their warehouse in Toronto challenging to say the least. Yet, these two bold female entrepreneurs are up for a challenge - turning their unwavering commitment to only sourcing from Canadian women-owned businesses into a non-negotiable aspect of doing business at Wonderkind. In spite of all the odds stacked against them, Shawna and Tara are committed to building a business with purpose.

“My superpower is Faith. I have to believe that things work out…even if it isn’t always the result I expected (or wanted)”

What’s on the horizon for Wonderkind? Aside from being determined to get their “tech” in order, Shawna and Tara continue to look for the best from Canada’s unlimited pool of incredible, innovative women entrepreneurs, paying their success forward and growing Wonderkind’s foundation. Wonderkind’s export business throughout North America and globally continues to grow and most recently they were nominated for a Gifting Award in the TheirUK.legacy?

Gifting with purpose. That gifting “something” isn’t good enough – thoughtful gifting with intent to last and be loved and appreciated becomes the standard in the corporate world.

pain creams. At the same time Li was speaking to competitive dancers and basketball players who wanted both injury prevention and the ability to return to their sport quicker. The result of their collaboration was Heali Medical’s first product: HEALI Tape, an Infused Kinesiology Tape that has 2 natural ingredients infused directly into the tape (Menthol and Magnesium) providing the added benefits of pain relief and recovery in addition to stability. Enter the second important component of their product development… their combined fondness for fashion. Their goal was to take the functionality of the tape to the next level and incorporate “style”. The result was a sports injury

Friends for more than 15 years, Heather and Li had shared patient success stories, discussed innovative healing treatments, health and wellness must-haves and their dream, their own business. Heather Sloan is a chiropractor, and EnWei Li a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. Combining their names, HEALI Medical was born. Now they needed a product. After a ski injury, Heather needed a solution that would provide both stability for her knee and pain relief for her muscles. Regular sports tapes provide stability but are unable to stay sticky and adhere to the body with the use of

and perfect their formula, and more importantly, create the strategy to manufacture and go to market

Heali Medical was founded in 2020 by the two entrepreneurs who shared a passion for health, wellness, fitness, and active living without compromising on style and personal expression.

HEALI focuses on improving the approach to injury prevention, rehabilitation and pain relief. Coming up - you can watch Heali Medical pitch their business on this Fall's season premiere episode of CBC's Dragon's Den scheduled for October 6th at 8pm ET. While we can’t disclose the result of their pitch, we

product that not only worked but was visually “cool”. “Function meets Fashion” just made good sense. Today there are 10 fashion-forward styles of HEALI Tape with more products set to launch.

Their first big triumph came when they participated at a major trade show with big box retailers for health, wellness and first aid and won first prize. A subsequent article in the Drug Store News helped them to successfully acquire their first big account Today Heather and Li are being purchased and/or trialed by many professional sports teams both in Canada and US as well as Olympians, amateur athletes and performers from Cirque du Soleil. They are also working with pharmacy, health and wellbeing outlets to bring Heali’s products to store shelves to augment their established and growing on-line business

Heather and Li will tell you that their business and product did not happen overnight. In fact, HEALI was born in August 2020 during the Pandemic… a challenging time for any business let alone a start-up. Lengthy lockdowns where medical practitioners could not see patients, and knowing that people coming out of the pandemic had health, healthy living and at home fitness top of mind, meant they had time to create the business, talk to athletes and sports enthusiasts and perfect their formula, and more importantly, create the strategy to manufacture and go to market.

MAKING IT WORK…

Even though HEALI Medical has only been WBE Canada certified for a short time, it has helped bring credibility to their business and to instill confidence in customers that they are reliable and honest. They have been able to use their certifications to start discussions and conduct business with large multi-national chains that know the value of being certified. As WBEs, access to major corporations will be key as Heali Medical looks to expand into Corporate Gifting with their "Fit Boxes”, adding another layer of exposure to their branding and bringing their unique take on health, well being and active living to corporate culture.

WBE CERTIFICATION AND CANADIAN WOMEN BRAND

As founders, Heather and Li bring to the table complimentary, yet, very differentiated skill sets that make them complete and well rounded. Being good friends as well as business partners that share similar views on life and health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance enables positivity and resilience. Key is their ability to work together, using their different skills to solve the myriad of challenges that face a new business without becoming disillusioned. They make it work. As women entrepreneurs Heather and Li have found that there are many like minded women in business willing to lend a hand or an ear, share their experience and mentor those just starting out. They encourage any female business owner to leverage this pool of supporters and advisors. Down the road, they also intend to “pay it forward” and help the next round of women entrepreneurs where they can.

“We hope to one day be role models for other women to follow their dreams. We hope HEALI can be remembered as a company that creates products that can change and improve people’s lives. Better Health. Better Solutions. Better Ways.”

Their first big triumph came when they participated at a major trade show with big box retailers for health, wellness and first aid and won first prize. A subsequent article in the Drug Store News helped them to successfully acquire their first big account. Today Heather and Li are being purchased and/ or trialled by many professional sports teams both in Canada and US as well as Olympians, amateur athletes and performers from Cirque du Soleil. They are also working with pharmacy, health and wellbeing outlets to bring Heali’s products to store shelves to augment their established and growing on-line business.

“A portion of all HEALI sales go towards supporting like-minded charities to bring about a global shift towards better overall health. Each year we contribute to a charity that reflects these goals supporting physical and mental well-being.”

When the pandemic struck, BSQUARED suddenly was faced with the reality that their newly launched business was stalled and their carefully secured customer base no longer able to support their product lines. Branded goods, ordered and ready to ship were no longer leaving the warehouse as events were shut down, employees began working from home, and marketing strategies on hold. The world basically came to a halt. As so many womenowned businesses did, they re-grouped and pivoted, manufacturing and distributing PPE (personal protective equipment) to keep going. As well, they added additional services that they discovered were needed during the pandemic such as kitting and fulfillment. A huge nod to their determination to

Bianca Latina, Founder and CEO of BSQUARED, a WBE Canada certified company, is no stranger to adversity and challenge. Born in South Africa during Apartheid, Bianca, a bi-racial child born to her Italian father and black South African mother, watched her father arrested numerous times just for being with her mother. As a baby her mother had to pretend that she was the Nanny. When she was just four the family fled to Canada and freedom.

WBE Canada Magazine | Issue 7 | Fall/Winter 2022

One of BSQUARED’s most important initiatives is eco sustainability. They realized that many clients, especially because of the pandemic halt, and often as a result of re-branding initiatives, had large quantities of new, unused branded merchandise sitting around. Instead of having hundreds, if not thousands of pieces end up in landfills, BSQUARED came up with ways to either reuse the garments or work with organizations that will recycle in a sustainable way. A recent project had more than 350 brand new branded backpacks returned by the client, logos removed and then donated to a not for profit for underprivileged students. All free of charge.

As part of their social responsibility, BSQUARED made a commitment to support the BlackNorth Initiative. BNI is committed to the removal of systemic racial barriers negatively affecting the lives of Black Canadians. Their mission is to end anti-Black systemic racism throughout all aspects of Black lives by utilizing a business-first mindset, with a commitment to increasing the representation of Black Canadians in the boardrooms and executive suites across Canada. To empower and facilitate the success of women-owned businesses with equitable access within supply chains to drive innovation, social value and economic growth in communities across Canada.

VISION

While WBE Canada has always partnered with both sides of supply chains - buyers and suppliers throughout its existence, this is the first time we are including this collaboration in our Mission Statement. Our primary focus continues to be on supporting Canadian Women Business Enterprises, yet we also understand that more support for purchasing organizations will result in more accelerated and impactful opportunities for our WBEs.

INNOVATION We continue to learn, improve, and innovate with audacity

To build and grow a strong Canadian ecosystem that connects women-owned businesses to procurement opportunities through advocacy, certification, development, and promotion and helps corporations & governments to deliver on their supplier diversity commitments.

Corporate Member organizations and Canadian WBEs need to continue to join forces in innovative ways and support efforts through continual improvement in their own businesses, communities, and organizations. WBE Canada plays an important role in the Women entrepreneurial ecosystem ensuring that supply chains are diverse and inclusive while also being a champion of transformation across the industries. Continued efforts to remove barriers and standardize supplier diversity reporting will remain an important focus for WBE Canada in the upcoming years.

said Silvia Pencak, President & CEO of WBE Canada. “And one that I see will position us to be among the world’s leading organizations making a difference for women entrepreneurs. I look forward to working with our community and partners on activating this Plan.”

WBE Database Development

WBE Canada’s Board of Directors recognizes the opportunities and risks surrounding supplier diversity and women entrepreneurs in Canada. The Board’s commitment to the organization is to continue being a catalyst for change in supply chains and committed to inclusion, recognition and development of more Canadian women-owned businesses.

This year, we have taken time to capture feedback from a breadth of stakeholders and build a robust plan that is impactful, ambitious, and reflective of our core values. This Plan can not and should not be accomplished by WBE Canada alone,” said Madeleine Baker, Chair of the Board at WBE Canada.

“This is a bold plan,”

While many Canadian WBEs are already delivering products and services to large corporations and governments in Canada and abroad, it is imperative that the pool of WBE suppliers continues to grow, evolve, and women-owned businesses are able to continue delivering on some of the most lucrative opportunities in supply chains with excellence and increased capacity.

GOOD FOR BUSINESS

DIVERSIFIES YOUR POOL OF SUPPLIERS

A strong, successful, independent woman entrepreneur sends a positive message to young women as they develop their leadership skills and map out their futures. But further, womenowned businesses give back to their communities, mentoring, volunteering, sponsoring programs and initiatives helping us raise healthy and strong youth, support the sick and elderly, and tackle the most difficult challenges in the communities. Buying from women-owned businesses is in a way putting money back into the economy - and allowing it to stay in the local economy - right where it will make the biggest impact.

Buying with Purpose: Canadian Women Brand

WBE Canada Magazine | Issue 7 | Fall/Winter 2022

Buying from women is good for your business! Including women-owned businesses in your supply chain makes your supply chain diverse and inclusive which in turn results in increased customer satisfaction, higher revenues, better employee retention, more robust supply chains, and increased access to new markets. With an innate sense of innovation and problem solving, they have a remarkably faster turn-around time, are more flexible to making changes or tweaks midway if required and are not afraid to try new things!

There is an unparalleled opportunity to unlock economic growth by supporting women entrepreneurs. Supporting Canadian womenowned businesses and tapping into the immense potential that they have, could re-energize Canada’s economy and its businesses, adding about $150 billion in incremental GDP by 20262

Buying from women-owned businesses makes your supply chain diverse and inclusive. It gives you an additional pool of suppliers who traditionally don’t have visibility or access to your business or organization - ensuring that you benefit from the best products and services available. By working with a women-owned business you also showcase your company’s commitment to supplier diversity, working with small and local businesses and furthering economic growth in local communities.

Women-owned businesses in Canada are growing at a rapid pace and are becoming increasingly prominent, with a 30% increase in women-owned businesses in the last ten years1, and statistics clearly show the huge impact that they have on Canada’s economy. However, time and again, the question arises ‘Why is it important to support Canadian women-owned businesses?’

GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY

When you buy from a women-owned business, it enhances the economic stability of their families and communities. They are able to create jobs, grow wealth, and give back in so many ways.

Women-owned businesses are creative, agile and innovative. Supporting women-owned businesses helps in making our markets more competitive, interesting and unique. They are also known to think differently and have a unique perspective which can lead to more creative energy which, in turn, leads to improved problem solving. Startups owned by women tend to be more creative and employ a diverse workforce.

During the pandemic, the creativity and innovation of women-owned businesses has been proven repeatedly. Women-owned businesses made quick decisions, changed the way they interacted with their customers, switched to online shops, revamped their manufacturing processes to develop PPEs and

In fact, over half (55.0%) of businesses majorityowned by women introduced new ways to interact with or sell to customers to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with 49.7% of other businesses. Furthermore, over one-third (34.0%) of businesses majority-owned by women reported that they modified their products or customer services to adapt to the pandemic, compared with over onequarter (27.4%) of all businesses in Canada3

Visiting and supporting women-owned businesses can make more of an impact than you know. Today, women entrepreneurs are transforming economies, but they can only do it with your support. Which leads us to our second most commonly asked question, ‘How do I support women-owned businesses?’

“Sixty to 70 per cent of every dollar spent with a diverse supplier goes back into that community. What that tells me is procurement can be a powerful change agent," says Jessica, who defines

PROCUREMENT CAN BE A POWERFUL AGENT OF CHANGE

Access to opportunity is something Jessica thinks a lot about nowadays as a leader on RBC's global procurement team, which helps the bank achieve strategic objectives of maximizing the value of third-party supplier engagements, valued at $8.8 billion in 2021. Jessica's role allows her to see how the bank's buying power supports diverse suppliers and, in turn, strengthens local communities.

BUILD NETWORKS, GAIN MOMENTUM

“One of the challenges all diverse suppliers face is access to networks. But when you have a diverse supplier champion, like RBC, that makes introductions into the company, well that's golden" says Ann, whose business has grown to 18 people. “Once introductions are made, it's up to me to demonstrate the value we bring to the table. But the opportunity to pitch is all that we're asking for."

Crazy. It's the word Jessica Grey remembers using to describe her parent's decision to leave Jamaica for a new life in Ottawa. And that was even before January's frigid winds greeted her family on their first day in their adopted country.

“They were driven by a quest for a better education and careers for themselves and their children," recalls Jessica. “Canada was the gateway to those kinds of opportunities."

ACCESS TO OPPORTUNITY

diverse suppliers as businesses 51 per cent or more owned by a member of a traditionally underrepresented or underserved group including women, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, people with disabilities, veterans and, in the U.S., qualifying small businesses.

Ann Gomez knows all about the transformational power of accessing opportunity. The founder of Clear Concept Inc., a training organization that helps people do their best work through productivity, high-performance teaming and wellbeing programs, has worked with RBC for 15 of the 18 years her firm has been in business.

'PROCUREMENT CAN BE A POWERFUL AGENT OF CHANGE'

CREATING VALUE FOR DIVERSE-OWNED BUSINESSES

Clear Concept's founder offers another example. “We used to only provide training in a workshop format, which made it hard to scale across a large organization," explains Ann. “A team at RBC helped co-design a new model, effectively one-to-many, which not only allowed us to scale up but also make it more accessible to companies of all sizes. Their productivity program has been rolled out across the bank's retail network, as well as other organizations across the country. I wholeheartedly believe that RBC has helped us step into our vision for what we're trying to achieve as a company."

value for companies owned by underrepresented or underserved groups. For instance, the bank leads various mentorship activities to help entrepreneurs gain access to new business opportunities, or skills to succeed over the long term, such as financial planning workshops for women entrepreneurs.

But even as Procurement evolves the diverse supply strategy, the bank looks for other ways to create

Efforts to diversify corporate supply chains are gaining momentum as part of a larger global response to address systemic racism. RBC, which first began to focus on diversifying its supply chain in the early 2000s as a way to support Indigenousowned businesses, recognizes more progress is needed. For instance, 25 per cent of Canadian companies had no formal supplier diversity program in place, and more than 10 per cent are still in the initial stage of initializing one according to one research paper.

The bank is on a 'permanent campaign" to identify and include eligible businesses in its supplier diversity program, which currently includes more than 4,000 certified suppliers. Yet the bank's access to such companies is far greater through its partnerships with diversity councils and other business associations to help eligible suppliers gain greater access to competitive bids. To accelerate the bank's efforts around the world, the number of these partnerships has grown from four to 12 since 2018. The bank also embeds supplier diversity considerations into day-to-day procurement activities, and includes supplier diversity goals in the procurement activities to inspire progress.

A number of bank executives have also put up their hands to coach these entrepreneurs. Jessica recalls one occasion when a senior leader invited attendees at a diversity conference to call her if they needed help with their sales pitches. “That said a lot about the connection between the bank's diversity agenda and its procurement efforts," says Jessica. “We want to build capabilities — and create opportunities — to strengthen communities."

“A big part of why RBC exists is to help communities prosper, so in a sense, we are simply embedding our Purpose into our sourcing tools and strategy," says Jessica. “We know there are many diverse suppliers like Clear Concept, who may be one opportunity away from reaching their full potential. Helping them access it is good for their business, and more broadly, our society."

52

“Thousands upon thousands of businesses simply don't have experience accessing opportunities to major companies. And so they struggle to grow. RBC's strategy is to help level the playing field in every market we operate in," explains Jessica.

TIPS TO COLLABORATIONIMPROVE RESULTS

Active listening requires the full presence of both parties. Have you ever been talking to someone at a party, and you realize they are only half listening to you as they scan the room to see if there is someone better/ cuter/higher up the ladder etc. to talk to? Active listening means you are giving that person your undivided attention, asking questions, and seeking to understand.

Jamie Crump & Lindsay Lapaquette

At this year’s Supplier Diversity Toolkit Workshop, one thing we looked at was how to better collaborate with internal stakeholders who live with procurement results. These people can do so much to champion supplier diversity efforts across an organization. To get you thinking about the topic, WBE Canada asked this year’s speakers Jamie Crump and Lindsay Lapaquette to share five tips that will improve collaboration efforts and results.

Collaboration is a business term that can mean a lot of different things to different people. But what is it really? How do you know if you are getting the best results? How can you improve the collaborative effort at your company?

Collaboration and consensus are two different things. Getting the best ideas and getting everyone to agree. Consensus feels good, but let’s face it – expecting everyone to agree about every decision can be a recipe for disaster. Collaboration gets things done. Give everyone the opportunity to be heard, then have a process for making decisions and moving forward.

Words don’t always land as intended. Perception is 9/10’s of the law. You may have a photographic memory, but if the person you are speaking to doesn’t feel heard, it isn’t going to count for much. Clarifying intent and being open to feedback about the impact of your words are an important part of collaboration. This is especially true as we conduct more business online. Encourage feedback often

Leave your ego at the door. The main strength behind collaboration is that you can bring together a group with diverse talents and experiences who can come up with the best ideas. If everyone is going to be comfortable bringing their best to the table, there is no room for the competition of whose idea it was, why a suggestion will never work, or which part of the solution (yours) is most important.

It can be messy, but in a good way. A lot of ideas get talked about. There may be some healthy debate on what the right answers are. Someone will eventually have to decide on what is going to happen next (see tip #1 above). For a “shortest distance between two points kind of person” it can seem like a lot of excess dialogue. Fear not. Not only will the results be better, but everyone who collaborated will have learned so much in the process that they will do an even better job next time.

The Importance of Leadership in Enterprise Culture

• Is impartial towards all employees

Anne-Marie Deslauriers, President & Founder, Delan

A corporate culture does not happen on its own. The leader is responsible for a lot. Today's leaders must listen and show empathy. They also must make sure to promote the values of the company and set an example daily. This will allow them to support their legitimacy with their teams and increase the trust and commitment of employees.

• Is empathetic, open and always listening

Nowadays, and even more with the current context of labour shortages, it is essential for companies to develop a good organizational culture and have a positive work experience to attract and retain the most talented employees.

A good leader:

• Can create a healthy and harmonious environment where it is good to work

• Trains and supports employees to improve their skills.

A corporate culture is about creating a harmonious, collaborative and trustworthy workplace that allows people to work together to develop innovative ideas.

Candidates prefer working for employers who have a good reputation and are known for their values, fairness, flexibility, the quality of their leaders and the opportunities for career progression they offer.

There is no denying the role of leaders in developing a good organizational culture.

One of the key elements of a good enterprise culture is the leadership style.

• Understands the vision, mission and objectives of the organization in order to better transmit them to their team

• Leads by example

WBE Canada Magazine | Issue 7 | Fall/Winter 2022 58

Today's companies need effective leaders who can build a good employee experience and who drive employee engagement and well-being, essential elements of a strong company culture. Soft skills have also become an essential skill for managers, as important as their business knowledge or their technical skills.

Leadership has a very important effect on company culture. Indeed, effective leadership will influence and strengthen organizational culture in the Organizationalworkplace.

A good organizational culture therefore makes it possible to attract happy employees who will be excellent ambassadors and who will help to spread the good reputation of the company, which will allow it to attract more talent.

The Scotiabank Women Initiative supports women in business in three main areas: access to capital, mentorship, and education. At its inception, the program had targeted an allocation of $3 billion in capital for women-led businesses in Canada over 3 years. With the program’s success, the bank surpassed its initial target providing $4 billion in capital to women in business in 2022. Since then, The Scotiabank Women Initiative has increased its commitment to $10 billion.

According to Scotiabank’s research, women have been under-represented when accessing capital for business. Studies have shown that womenowned businesses contribute $150 billion to the Canadian economy and employ more than 1.5 million people and that advancing women’s equality in Canada could add $150 billion to the GDP by 2026.1 Furthermore, in speaking to clients, the bank learned that women face unconscious gender bias when trying to build and manage their business and that there is a resulting gender gap in venture capital funding.

The Scotiabank Women Initiative® was established in 2018 to provide unbiased access to capital and tailored financial solutions, specialized education, mentorship, networking, and advice to women clients looking to build and scale their business and advance their careers. The program was founded in response to the need for business financing for women who were experiencing unique challenges when starting, sustaining, and growing a business.

For example, a 2020 study showed when it came to venture capital, women received less than men – 2.3% for women versus 97.7% for men.1
