Message from the President & CEO

Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress

Happy International Women's Day Month!

WBE Canada joins women everywhere in celebrating International Women’s Day 2024 and this year’s theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”.

Being a small to medium-sized business in Canada, and especially a woman-owned business, can be challenging at the best of times. The constant turbulence in the economy, market volatility and global political upheaval create even greater challenges. Savvy women business enterprises know that it is vitally important to continually build up your immunity to protect against any number of events that, while out of your control, can suddenly disrupt your sound business strategies and ultimately your success.

Small businesses make up 98% of all businesses in Canada, but only 18% of those are majority owned by women. In spite of the constant focus of women entrepreneurs on innovation and supporting equitydeserving groups, the representation of womenowned businesses in supply chains is progressing very slowly. More needs to be done to support, scale up and engage women in supply chains. Since 2009, WBE Canada has been supporting WBEs through the development of tools and resources to support growth and success in supply chains of large public and private organizations.

For the past year, WBE Canada, thanks to support from the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has been conducting a major research project related to supplier diversity, supply chains and WBE development. These findings will be presented to our community during our Fast-Track to Supply Chains event in Toronto on March 26, 2024 and shared across Canada during our cross-Canada tour beginning in April. We hope you choose to join us - check our 2024 Events Calendar to find an event closest to you.

WBE Canada is dedicated and committed to the success of Canadian women-owned businesses By investing in Canada’s women-owned businesses we are accelerating progress and improving economies,

locally, regionally, nationally and globally. Here are just a couple of resources that the WBE Canada team has designed to support women entrepreneurs.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL

WOMEN’S DAY 2024 & WBE SUCCESS

This month we celebrated International Women's Day, recognized globally when we come together to celebrate the incredible social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls throughout the world. It is a day of unity, reflection, advocacy, action and inspiration. Globally, the theme for 2024’s IWD is “Inspire Inclusion”. We know that when we inspire others

to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. When women themselves are inspired to be included, the results are not just a sense of belonging and relevance but a true sense of empowerment.

As WBE Canada celebrates all that International Women’s Day has come to embody, we are truly inspired at how far we have come in moving the needle on diversity, equity and inclusion. There are so many incredible achievements amongst Canada’s women entrepreneurs. As we reflect on International Women’s Day we invite you to share in the following stories of six innovative and successful Canadian women entrepreneurs who have aspired to their dreams with the support of WBE Canada’s Certification and Pathfinder programs.

FROM PASSION TO SUCCESS: SommEvents

Starting a business can be a stressful yet essential step for entrepreneurs who want to turn their dreams into reality. Since the age of 17, Marte Belisle has been passionate about wine. She fell in love with wine after a trip to Bordeaux, the magnificent French wine city and region, where her eyes were opened to the unique flavours, grape varietals, and the joy of sharing moments over a glass of wine.

During her spare time, Marte travelled the world, meeting people, learning what makes each wine region unique, developing her skills and dreaming of turning her passion into a business. In 201, following years spent in various careers including interior design and as sales manager for commercial fabric companies, Marte took the chance and started turning her dream into reality. In 2020 she launched SommEvents as a full-time business.

Early on, Marte recognized that diversification was essential for staying ahead of the competition. She developed a program that catered to both corporations and consumers, cultivating relationships

with both clienteles through the principles of trust and transparency. For the corporate facet of the business, SommEvents created wine experiences for team building, client retention and offering branded wine gifts. Consumer events are more intimate, curated events with wine and food pairings, providing a more interactive and fun experience. Marte has some concrete advice for those who want to create a business and succeed. Her greatest strength, which has brought her to where she is today, is her ability to sell a product and easily talk with everyone. Meeting clients and suppliers is something you have to inherently enjoy. One of her longest learning curves? Learning to delegate. The biggest challenge? Establishing the company and making it known in the marketplace. And that requires a substantial marketing budget which can be overwhelming and complex, but with motivation and creative ideas, goals can be achieved. Stress? It’s always present but it’s crucial to separate work from your personal life to avoid losing oneself in the business. And of course, a glass of wine helps!

10

Marte’s key advice to anyone looking to start a business is to develop plans—lots of plans. Plan your budget then be prepared to triple it. It always costs more than you anticipate. After you have covered all the details, leave yourself open to adapting as your market will drive the changes.

“Having support from groups of women who uplift and help each other's businesses grow has been immensely helpful. Being surrounded by a supportive community like WBE Canada’s Supplier Advisory Committee, being involved and taking advantage of all that WBE Canada offers to women entrepreneurs, has allowed me to progress and feel well-supported. Today, I have future projects that I hope will one day materialize: growing my company into a franchise and establishing it worldwide.” Marte Belise, Founder & President, SommEvents.

Marte Belisle | Following her passion for travel and wine, Marte has spent the last 3 decades studying wines around the world. Along the way she has also gone back to school to be formally trained.

SommEvents is not Marte’s first business but certainly the one she is most passionate about. Coordinating events, selecting wines and food pairing, creating new ways of presenting wine and sharing her knowledge with clients never feels like work for her. Niagara is the region she has come to know in depth over the last 20 years and although she makes her base there, no wine region is foreign to her.

Using all of her knowledge, Marte helps companies with client retention strategies using wine.

Life is a collection of moments….gather as many of the good ones as you can

WBE CERTIFICATION BOOSTS OPPORTUNITY & REVENUE

HerBrand Consulting specializes in helping brands market more effectively with women, from research and strategy to final execution. The firm also recently launched a new division called HB Consulting that helps B2B brands stand out from a sea of sameness in the midst of what can be a very “dry toast” B2B space.

Taktical is a Montreal-based CX production studio and WBE Canada Certified diverse supplier, that uses Design Storytelling and Creative Production to bridge the gap between traditional marketing and the desired Metaverse through cinematic and interactive 3D content based on alluring narratives for the best ROI.

As a certified WBE for just over three years, HerBrand Consulting has been introduced and exposed to exceptional opportunities. During its first year of certification, the company was most excited about meeting and pitching corporate members, which took place during WBE Canada’s Meet & Pitch and B2B Matchmaker events. And while meeting corporate members was extremely exciting, HerBrand came to realize that meeting and pitching fellow WBEs was equally as exciting and fruitful. During its second year of certification,

HerBrand had the good fortune of meeting the team at Taktical during a Matchmaker event. Taktical’s expertise helped HerBrand secure new business – a global website project – with an existing client that it would not have been able to fulfill without this partnership – exciting indeed! The project was a success, which helped change the client’s perception of HerBrand, bringing additional opportunities to the forefront. HerBrand’s WBE certification is opening doors that have helped the company reposition itself for success and generate new revenue in unforeseen ways. Exciting and worth the investment!

FROM ASHES TO SUCCESS:

The Soap Company of Nova Scotia Ltd.

The Soap Company of Nova Scotia Ltd. located in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia makes soaps, skin care and cleaning products that are so pure & gentle, they test them on their children. After a lifetime of chronic issues caused by synthetic ingredients & growing up with a dad who was even more afflicted by the same things, Leigh McFarlane was inspired to create simple, gluten-free, nut-free products that were both unscented (guaranteed!) & scented with essential oils. But her road to success has been faced with catastrophic challenges and incredible resilience.

In 2020 when the pandemic hit Leigh McFarlane and her team at The Soap Company of Nova Scotia dug deep and got busy, determined to not only survive, but thrive. Their growth plan was on track, it was November 22nd and over 30 retail orders were awaiting transport and 80 wholesale orders were being packed. Pandemic aside, they were on target to increase revenue by 1.25% from 2020-2022. Everything looked so promising.

After a busy day, Leigh wandered into the factory to discover the washer on fire. In no time, the inferno raged, made worse by the howling winds off the ocean and almost in the blink of an eye, 8 years of effort, the entire business and Leigh’s home were gone. What do you do? Dig deep. Make lists. Get busy again.

Like most small towns but especially in the Maritimes, the community gathered, ready to pitch in and offered practical support. Within 2 weeks Leigh and her team were making soap in a temporary factory, then moved to a 4,000 square foot space 2 weeks later. No looking back. In 2022 sales grew and they rebranded, launching beautiful new packaging at Toronto CanGift.

In 2023 sales continued to grow as they implemented a new strategic growth plan. They hired a business development manager, renewed online ads, and the full-time team grew to 6.

This past February, The Soap Company of Nova Scotia Ltd. became WBE Canada certified. Currently Leigh is participating in TAP - EDC’s Trade Accelerator Program as well as Supplier Diversity Mentorship programs with CWB (Canadian Women in Business) and WBE Canada. There is no time to be wasted as Leigh McFarlane plans the continued success of her company.

“Together with my incredible team we are growing this business with products folks rely on & trust, while creating jobs & contentment. We are reliable, resilient and ready to partner in shared success with both private and public sectors. Together we will help so many more folks feel great in their skin.”

Scotia Ltd.

14

Leigh is the creative force behind The Soap Company of Nova Scotia Ltd., which produces natural soaps, skin care and cleaning products that really work. Leigh believes every person has a right to feel great in their own skin. After a lifetime of chronic issues caused by synthetic ingredients, she was inspired to create simple, gluten-free scented and guaranteed unscented products. Sought out by folks suffering from scent and chemical sensitives, these products make a meaningful difference for those who must avoid synthetics. Leigh has grown her business with products folks rely on and trust.

Since being chosen for the Wallace McCain Institute's Entrepreneurial Leaders Program in 2018 she has continued to strive toward the goals outlined in the ONE Nova Scotia report by scaling her company, creating jobs and contentment with products so pure and gentle they are tested on children! FINDING WBE CANADA'S PATHFINDER PROGRAM: N2 Infrastructure Technologies Inc.

Raheel Kamal didn’t exactly start out to own a logistics company, let alone one that utilizes drone technology in Canada’s north. As an electrical engineer, Raheel served as General Manager in her family-owned business in India, eventually relocating to Saudi Arabia. With a passion for entrepreneurship and a desire to contribute to the world through cutting-edge technology, she connected with experts in the drone industry.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Raheel recognized the pressing global issue of logistics, particularly in remote areas lacking reliable road infrastructure. She identified the northern part of Canada as an area significantly impacted by inflation, adverse weather conditions and limited logistical options and where daily supply chains and emergency services face formidable challenges. With a dedicated team of experts, she and her colleagues relocated to Canada with a goal to not only navigate the complexities of the logistics landscape but to elevate their business to new heights through innovation and excellence while aligning with global sustainability objectives.

With the technology side of her new business in place and final regulatory and licensing requirements being finalized, Raheel began looking to support her business development.

As a women entrepreneur, she discovered WBE Canada and attended the National Conference in November 2023. And found exactly what she was looking for - WBE Canada’s Pathfinder Program.

“After seeking out resources and support tailored to women entrepreneurs, I discovered WBE Canada and

recognized it as a valuable opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, access resources, and grow my business within a supportive network. I decided to join the Pathfinder Program because of its reputation for providing comprehensive support and guidance specifically designed for women entrepreneurs. Recognizing the value of mentorship and tailored resources in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship, I saw the Pathfinder Program as an ideal opportunity to receive personalized guidance, access to networks, and resources to accelerate my business growth and development.” - Raheel Kamal, Co-Founder & Director, N2 Infrastructure Technologies Inc.

SASKPOWER’S TIER-2 DIVERSE SUPPLIER SPEND

INITIATIVE: Advancing Women Entrepreneurs and Inclusive Business Practices

SaskPower is committed to a diverse and sustainable supply chain. Enabling the growth of our diverse supply chain allows us to secure the best value possible for our company, our shareholders, and our customers.

Embracing supplier diversity and inclusive business practices is integral to our procurement strategy. SaskPower is dedicated to advancing women entrepreneurs and seeks opportunities to enhance participation in our supply chain for diverse suppliers.

“Customers and suppliers are interested in how SaskPower is increasing its commitment to sustainability. We are focused on equitable representation and decarbonizing our grid. Initiatives like tracking and rewarding the inclusion of diverse subcontractors into our projects allow

our primary contractors and SaskPower to be better positioned to embrace a more sustainable future.”

-Rhea Brown, Executive VP Customer Experience and Procurement

In 2020, SaskPower expanded our supplier diversity program to include women-owned businesses as a diversity group we actively identify, support and report on. Within just two years, we incorporated evaluation benefits for women ownership in our competitive process to demonstrate a meaningful commitment to the value women-owned businesses regularly provide. Last year we extended the program nationally, becoming the first Saskatchewan-based corporate member of WBE Canada. Our program’s momentum is strong as we have surpassed our spend targets since the program’s inception.

18

These findings motivated SaskPower to implement a new initiative within our Supplier Diversity Program, a pilot for Tier-2 Diverse Spend. This means that since August 2023, SaskPower has incorporated additional evaluation criteria in our competitive procurements for major construction projects. Prime contractors are asked to provide evidence of a diverse supplier engagement strategy and a monetary target for diverse spend through the employment of diverse suppliers within their subcontractor roles.

Although we have seen positive results, we know there is still a lot of work to be done. We recently reviewed our supply chain development strategy and realized:

• Most of our diverse businesses are not bidding on competitive projects.

• Many diverse companies in our supply chain work with SaskPower as a sub-contractor.

• A significant number of these diverse sub-contractors were identified through our major construction projects.

“Tier-2 spend reporting does not replace contracting directly with diverse suppliers. Advancing underrepresented companies is important to SaskPower, and we expect it to be important to our prime contractors as well. We believe this program will influence how prime contractors allocate their resources on our major construction projects. This initiative signifies that expectation and introduces accountability while progressing SaskPower towards a more sustainable supply chain.”
-Alison O’Reilly | Specialist, Supplier Relationship Management & Program Lead for Supplier Diversity
19 WBE Canada Magazine | Issue 12 | March 2024

Currently, the program includes three major construction projects: Ermine/Yellowhead Plant Expansion, Aspen Power Station, and Regina Operations Maintenance Complex.

This initiative prompted SaskPower to reconsider how we are communicating about this program. As a result, we are:

• Meeting with prime contractors to share our program objectives and offer support to help them meet their new contractual target for diverse spend.

• Sharing the list of projects that include the diverse spend requirement, as well as contact information with diverse suppliers, so they can begin building relationships with these prime contractors.

• Internally, we are meeting with our project managers to share the program’s purpose.

Our pilot is scheduled to be reassessed in August 2024. We will consider the program objectives, design, and outcomes. Adjustments may be made to improve the program or meet new objectives.

As SaskPower pioneer’s supplier diversity programming in Saskatchewan, our aspiration is to build a replicable program, inspiring other corporations, government agencies and Crowns to join us in advancing women entrepreneurs.

“SaskPower has received tremendous support on the expansion of our supplier diversity program to include women-owned businesses as well as the implementation of their tier-2 diverse spend reporting. These actions and others like them are being woven into our core strategy and processes at SaskPower and I expect that we will continue to advance.”

The Power of Ask

I wasn’t too far into my career before I discovered that I had a much better chance of getting the support and resources I needed if I took solutions into a meeting and not just my problems. Supplier diversity professionals are often asked what kind of help they need. Having something to ask for can be a true differentiator in your supplier diversity strategy.

Time and again, I see clients launch a supplier diversity strategy and take care to create information, deliver it to stakeholders, and provide data around the strategy overall. Yet, when asked how people can help, they have at best vague responses or at worst, no response at all.

The power of that message, so carefully crafted, is to engage others within the organization to take on some aspect of the strategy. But people can only help if they know how. If you can’t tell people how to engage and help, your message will soon be lost with the hum of other presentations that left them empty-handed, even if they were initially excited to help. So, here are a few tips.

First, remember that people almost always want to help. That willingness is often underestimated.

Social psychologist Heidi Grant, in her book Reinforcements: How to Get People to Help

You says that only 1 in 4 people will ask for help before they absolutely need it (translation: it may already be too late to meet the commitment because the person waited too long).

Whether it is fear of rejection, or that judgment will occur for needing help, or that professional stock will go down, people are reluctant to ask for help.

Next, remember those SMART (specific, meaningful, actionoriented, realistic, and timebound) goals you learned how to do? Well, requests work the same way. This also works when people ask how they can help. This is your core competency, and you are viewed as the resident expert. It is much easier to pitch to someone who knows what they need and has a plan to get there.

I urge clients (corporates and WBEs) to be prepared with 2-3 asks anytime they

meet regardless of who it is. If possible, I also encourage that one of those be an easy yes. Get people in the habit of saying yes to supplier diversity. That doesn’t mean you should request things just to request them, but people appreciate specific instructions.

Finally, Grant also says that people want to see or know the impact of their help. So often, we get the help and then we don’t follow up to let them know how their help impacted the result. Never underestimate a thank you that tells how the assistance helped in the overall strategy. Put this on the list of items you need to cover before you are ready for that next meeting, and you won’t regret it.

Til next time –

“BE BOLD, BE BRAVE AND BE YOU,” VIRTUAL GURUS FOUNDER URGES WOMEN TO BELIEVE THEY CAN DO IT.

When Calgary’s Bobbie Racette says that “resilience and passion” are essential for women entrepreneurs, you can believe her.

The founder and CEO of Calgary’s Virtual Gurus faced numerous rejections from the male-dominated VC sector when she tried to fund her HR tech firm. As an LGBTQ+, Cree Metis woman, Racette was passionate about building an inclusive virtual talent marketplace for everyone.

“I was turned down 170 times by investors and told that my business was not ‘scalable’ even though I had so many clients coming to my site. I turned those criticisms around to put ‘fuel on my fire,’’ Racette says.

As the first Indigenous woman in Canada to close Series A VC funding, Racette advises women to “be bold, be brave, and be yourself.”

FROM LAID-OFF TO LIFTING UP OTHERS

At the helm of a company classified as one of Canada’s top-growing 100 companies in 2023, Racette admits she never anticipated such success. The Virtual Gurus model came to her as she was cobbling together an income as a virtual assistant herself.

“I realized that I could build this into a massive platform and give meaningful work-from-home opportunities to others like me,” recollects Racette.

With that inspiration, Racette drafted the Virtual Gurus business model, by which the company finds and trains skilled ‘Virtual Assistants’ within Canada and the U.S. and, with its proprietary AI software - combined with efforts of the Virtual Gurus team - matches them with client companies.

Likewise, the VG On Demand app allows people to send one-off type tasks, as opposed to dedicated assistants.

H ELPING BUSINESSES SCALE

Initially focusing on executive assistants and general admin, Virtual Gurus expanded its services due to high demand from organizations. The company caters to various support needs, including bookkeeping, marketing admin, social media support, HR admin and more, allowing leaders to delegate tasks and focus on growth. The company is trusted by big names including IDEO, Mastercard, and The Scotiabank Women Initiative.

FIND BELIEVERS WHO REALLY SEE YOU

Racette credits Roynat Capital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Scotiabank that provides creative financial solutions to mid market companies, for aiding Virtual Gurus in meeting its 2022 funding targets. Roynat’s support was chosen over other financial institutions due to their market expertise, embrace of diversity and alignment with the company’s vision. Currently, Roynat and Scotiabank offer bespoke lending and business banking support through a dedicated Technology & Innovation Banking group.

Beyond financial support, Virtual Gurus is excited to join forces with The Scotiabank Women Initiative, a flagship program aimed at enhancing economic and professional opportunities for women and non-binary individuals. As part of this partnership, Virtual Gurus is proud to extend an exclusive discount on its services to participants of the program, fostering a commitment to empowerment and diversity within the entrepreneurial landscape.
