The WISHES Youth Enrichment program provides students with fun after school enrichment opportunities that are designed to enhance your child’s educational experience, as well as stimulate new interests in hobbies and recreational activities. Drama Kids! Storybook Idol

Wish Upon a Ballet

Grades 1-5

Ages 3-6

Perform in a crazy mash-up of American Idol meets your most-loved story book characters. We go for BIG LAUGHS when characters compete to be in the next Big Story from Storyland. Lots of costumes in this year’s end-of-term performance. Bring the whole family to see it! No auditions, everyone performs. The class will culminate with a performance for family and friends in the CMS Auditorium on Thursday evening, May 29th. $135 for 8 classes; Drama Kids

Wish Upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories, as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes and scarves we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. Children will learn an appreciation for dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Parents, family and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of the session. Come join the fun! Boys and girls will need ballet shoes. Girls should wear a leotard and tights. Boys should wear comfortable clothes they can move around in. Prairie Kids to the Rescue! Ages 7-12 Life on the prairie was hard for settlers in the late 1800’s. Despite the challenges they faced, prairie kids still found fun and adventure! Join us as we travel back to the days of covered wagons, square dancing and prairie life. While learning about the basics of acting, stage positions, characterization and voice projection, we’ll be rehearsing an original class presentation that will be enjoyed by family and friends during our final class period. GENERAL & MISCELLANEOUS ....................................... Babysitter Training Course - Red Cross Certified Ages 11-18 STUDENTS MUST BE 11 YEARS OR OLDER TO TAKE THIS COURSE. This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, choking, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership and the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD and a handy emergency guide. Students must attend both classes in their entirety to receive certification. Phone/Technology/Media Etiquette and Being a Good Sport Grades K-4 Good manners help children build confidence, increase self-respect, improve communication skills, make friends and create a positive impression on others. In this fun and interactive class, students will have the opportunity to learn proper etiquette and good manners, as well as strengthen their ability to interact with others. The curriculum is geared for both boys and girls and will include telephone manners, phone and internet safety, respecting others on the phone, cell phone/ipod etiquette, texting safety, social networking sites, music, TV and movie etiquette, etiquette while playing games, being a spectator at a sporting event and playground etiquette, and a host of other subjects through role-playing exercises, activities and games. Minecraft is the LEGO®-like sandbox building fame that’s been dominating the world of video gaming for the past few years. Join us for the Parenting with Vision series in 2014. Replacing the annual Parenting Forum, this series will focus on important issues faced during some of the major milestones in a child’s school life. At each event, parents are invited to hear a panel speaking on topics of interest for that speciÀc age group. Time will be provided for questions and answers. Prior to each event will be a resource fair with representatives from a variety of community resources. Demystifying the High School: The panel discussion will feature staff and students speaking on topics of interest to soon-to-be-high school students, helping to alleviate the “fear of the unknown”. Designed for parents of 8th grade students. Demystifying Your Kindergarten Child: A panel of district specialists will speak on common areas of concern and interest about your soon-to-be and current kindergarten child. Demystifying The Middle Tween Years: The middle school years are a time of immense change and growth for students. If you would like information on what to expect in middle school and how to help your student through these exciting changes, you won’t want to miss this panel discussion. ..............SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATH mathWiZ Enrichment Program for Advanced Math Students At the heart of the mathWiZ Enrichment Program is an extraordinary curriculum carefully crafted to develop your child’s skill of logical reasoning and expand the joy found in your child thinking mathematically. Program provides students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge, which enables them to investigate, analyze, infer, and verify their problem-solving approach. During the sessions, your child will be provided with topic-based instructions which are supplemented with daily homework. In a collaborative environment, teachers inspire and encourage students to think logically and aid them in developing test taking skills. Intense drills and practice for ACT’s, NUMATS and Explore exams using full-length practice tests are incorporated into the course. The program also helps with math competitions like Math Masters, Junior High Math League, MathCounts and AMC 8. Each series of mathWiZ is independent of the others and is not a prerequisite. mathWiZ Elementary Level E11 Grades 3-5 The mathWiZ E11 topics include Number Theory and Pre-Algebra – visualization of geometric objects, composing and decomposing of geometric figures, congruence and similarity in figures in the areas of Number Theory and Pre-Algebra. Fencing Team

Grades 6-12

Discover how fun and exciting the sport of racquetball can be in this six-week program for youth. The Discover Racquetball curriculum was designed by Hall of Fame coach and legend Steve Strandemo. Steve was ranked top 10 in the world for 10 years and has written three best selling racquetball instructional books. Also, the instructors for this class have a combined 70 years of racquetball experience and are all Level I Certified Instructors at Life Time Fitness. All players will be grouped with other similarly skilled players - Beginners welcome! Each class will focus on playing games and learning the fundamentals of the game including serving, court position, shot selection, strategies, forehand, backhand and practice drills. Students should wear comfortable gym clothing (e.g. shorts and t-shirt) with sneakers or tennis shoes. Racquets, goggles, and balls will be provided. A team champion will be crowned! Teams will compete in meets (TBA) and the top four teams in the metro will compete in a championship playoff (date TBD). Fencing Grades 2-5 The in-class championship takes place this spring during class time. Fencers will not only learn new techniques and polish existing techniques, they will get a chance to compete for the best in their class. New arm band levels will be awarded for those students who work hard and earn them! Safety is our first priority. Fencing for Parents Join your elementary or middle school student! Parents are invited to register and join their children in the elementary or middle school fencing classes. Instead of watching from the sidelines, grab a foil and a mask to get a great workout. Learn an exciting sport and sharpen your reflexes while competing each week. Not just a punching, kicking, self-defense class. Kung Fu teaches awareness of self and surroundings and improves self-esteem and confidence. Join a fun non-competitive, full participation class that focuses on helping students develop leadership, discipline, concentration and coordination skills for a healthy mind and body. Improve your coordination, strength, flexibility and endurance. Learn the lifelong benefits of Kung Fu, the Chinese art of self-defense and fitness, from a Hong Kong champion. Class is designed for youth beginners ages 5 and older and adults. Parents, don’t just sit on the sideline. Register and participate with your child in class. Wear loose comfortable clothing to class. Optional uniform and certification for white to black belt available at class for additional fee. REGISTRATION INFORMATION........................................ It’s easy to register for WISHES classes online 24/7. Using your Visa/MasterCard/Discover, you can register immediately online at: www.ceregistration.wayzata.k12.mn.us Please note: Parents must register the child that is taking the class (the child’s name must show on the roster). Please do not register yourself. Make sure to note at which school the class is being held.

WISHES registrations may not be sent or dropped off at your child’s school or Home Base site. They are not permitted to accept them. Mail: Fill out registration form and mail it with your check (payable to ISD 284) to: Wayzata Community Education WISHES Registration PO Box 47334 Plymouth, MN 55447 Call Diane at 763-745-5213 if you need assistance. Register as soon as possible; certain classes fill up very quickly. Online registration will have priority. Mailed or dropped off (at Community Education) registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Be sure to note at which school the class is being held. * If your child is in Home Base, it is the responsibility of the parent to notify them that your child will be attending a WISHES Youth Enrichment class.

Confirmations/Waitlist You will receive an email confirmation ONLY if you provide an email address when you register online. Otherwise, assume you are in the class unless you hear from us. If you waitlist your child, you will be called ONLY if a spot becomes available.

Cancellations • You will receive a full refund if you cancel 3 business days (M-F) before the class starts. • No refunds will be issued the day of the class or after the class starts. • We reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. • Inclement Weather: If school is canceled or dismissed early due to severe weather, WISHES classes will be canceled. By registering your child for a Community Education WISHES class, you are giving us permission to use your child’s photograph/video in future publications such as Community Education WISHES flyers, print publication, brochures, and web pages.
