CLUB HISTORY CLUB HISTORY

Abbey Hulton United Football Club was formed 73 years ago in 1947, making it one of the oldest formed clubs still playing Saturday football in North Staffordshire.

During its very early days the club played on Council land in the Abbey Hulton area. It continued to use this facility for the first 15 years, despite the fact that the changing facilities were more than a mile away from the actual pitch.

In 1962 it was decided that the team should move to the Parks facility at Bucknall Park which was complete with its own changing rooms and showers adjacent to the pitch. What a luxury.

The team continued to use Bucknall Park for another 23 years, until 1985.

During the period from 1947 to 1985 the team played in many local junior leagues such as:

• The Longton League

• Fenton and District League

• Burslem and Tunstall League

• Newcastle and District League

They graced all the above leagues with great distinction.

Over the years the club became more financially stable and grew in ambition. Finally in 1985 they acquired a piece of land at Birches Head Road on which it was able to obtain a 99 year lease. This is the clubs current address. Immediately, a clubhouse was built containing a bar and changing rooms for both teams and officials. At the same time an outside 5 a-side football facility was built, complete with floodlights.

Having moved to this new facility the club opted to join the North Staffs Alliance League. It completed in this leauge before seeking election to one of the top leagues in the area, The Staffs County League (North), in 1987. The team played in this league and finally had a momentous season in 1997-1998 by winning the league, the cup and also the fair play award all in one season. Having achieved this feat the club applied to join what is the top junior league in North Staffordshire, the Staffordshire County Senior League. In 2017 Abbey Hulton United won the Staffordshire County Senior Premier League Championship and were promoted to the North West County Football League.

CHAIRMAN SPOTLIGHT

CHAIRMANS REVIEW

This season saw us starting without three of our regular first names on the team sheet lads Cropper and Gricey both with a wealth of experience at this level decided to retire and step down from the squad and we also lost from the other end of the scale Brandon Newell a massive young talent who moved onwards and upwards to Macclesfield Town

So Russ, Amo, and Dan certainly had their work cut out to replace at least these 3 key players from the squad

Then during this long hard season, we’ve seen Rhodesy another legend of a player having to hang his boots up through persistent injuries and then the latest casualty is our club's current captain and fantastic young talent Robbo, who has been having the season of his life winning M.O.M. numerous times. player of the month and scoring for fun whilst leading this great squad of players every week. (Fingers crossed the scan of Friday shows it’s nothing too serious mate) This injury to Robbo has seen old man Cropper come back out of retirement for us and he’s been in great form scoring goals like he’s never been away.

All the above being said I honestly think Russ and his management team have put together the best squad and more importantly young squad of players that we have ever had at the club. The talent and potential of these lads are there for us all to see every week, the banter and team spirit is second to none and this shows massively on the pitch as there never give up attitude and work hard for each other to win every ball see us very respectfully sitting smack bang mid table with 43 points and 6 league games left to play it was great to see us go mathematically safe after drawing away against Stockpot Georgians last weekend It’s been such a close season so far and when you think back at the crazy points we’ve thrown away against Rocester and Foley to name a couple we could easily have been knocking on the door of the top 5 to be in the playoffs this season

We’ve got a great trip out to our friends over at Bacup Borough on Saturday 1st April in the league cup Semi-final (Edward Case Cup) they are currently sitting mid table in the North division so it should be a great game that will hopefully see us getting the result and give Russ, Amo, and Dan their first chance to win some silverware for the club since we joined the NWCFL back in 2017/2018 season.

Off the pitch, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing ground staff who are led by our very own club legend John Wightman but collectively the 3 of them John, Mark, and Martin work tirelessly to ensure the pitch and all the ground as a whole stays in fantastic condition, so a huge thank you lads.

Of course, it goes without saying without our dedicated committee that give up hours and hours of their free time to ensure everything is done behind the scenes allowing the lads to play every week

And of course, a massive thank you to all of our club sponsors and fantastic supporters your loyalty and support is very much appreciated by myself and everyone else at our club

In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement.

The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1.

In the 2017- 18 season our Under17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league.

Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the standard which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2017/18, the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and, prior to the 2021/22 season, the team dugouts were replaced and more spectator improvements made. In readiness for the 2022/23 season and thanks to grant funding, all the existing 78 seats have been replaced with new ones in blue which compliment the club colours. Further developments are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward.

The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. Again, thanks to grant funding, land behind the ground has been developed to allow for a further junior pitch to be added to our facilities.

2021 saw Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings.

We consider Eccleshall FC to be a friendly club and we look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.
