DUGOUT VIEW A huge final welcome to you all for our final Home Fixture of the 2022-23 Season I first want to thank everyone for following us through thick and thin this year. We have improved but not to the level required to keep us at step 5 but this doesn’t mean there hasn’t been progress. The potential of this football club is huge and it will take a collective effort to shape a new future. Key to this will be success in our final game in the TJ Vickers Cup against our neighbours Whitchurch Alport, who will be looking to retain the Trophy. I need all of you in full voice to cheer the boys on at the New Bucks Head; I know I can count on you all. The final two League games give us the necessary preparation needed to fine tune our craft. Every game of football we play is an opportunity to learn new things. It would be easy to stutter through and complete the games through formality but I’m demanding more of this group. We should be looking to win this afternoon and that’s the minimum expectation after losing 6-1 at Atherstone just over a week ago. Over the weekend we introduced Owen Jackson, who is likely to be the youngest Market Drayton player in our history at 16 years and 1 day old - a Drayton lad playing for his hometown club having come through the Tigers system. Our aspiration should always be to develop talent from Market Drayton. That’s three 16 year olds that have represented the club in the last month and this is not by sentiment. They have to be good enough and we have to be prepared enough to create the environment and structure to support this. Last Thursday one of our volunteers celebrated their birthday; s belated birthday wishes Jayne. This woman is an absolute legend and we are extremely lucky to have her. I do not know where you find the energy Jayne but thank you for everything you do for this football club and for me. I do not know what I would do without you. Our summer will have to be our busiest in recent times; there is much we will need to do together. The fire burns strong and acceptance is not an option; we have an opportunity to go again if we do this properly and we must recognise this. Bang that Drum and Up the Gingerbread Men.

ATHERSTONE TOWN FC The original club was formed in 1887. They reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup in 1907–08, losing 3–0 to Stockton. The following season saw them reach the semi-final stage again, this time losing 3–0 to Clapton. After playing in several local leagues, they joined the Birmingham Combination in 1911, and were runners-up in their first season in the league. The club finished bottom of the league in 1923–24 and again in 1928–29. Following World War II, they were league champions in 1947–48, also winning the Birmingham Senior Cup. When the Combination folded in 1954, all but one of the clubs joined the Birmingham & District League, with Atherstone placed in the transitional Northern Division. A fourteenth-place finish in 1954–55 saw them placed in Division Two for the following season. They went on to finish as runners-up in Division Two, and were promoted to Division One. Atherstone finished bottom of Division One in 1957–58 and were relegated back to Division Two. However, they finished third in Division Two the following season and were promoted to Division One. The league was reduced to a single division in 1960, and was renamed the West Midlands (Regional) League in 1962. When it expanded in 1965, Atherstone became members of the Premier Division. They were runners-up in the division in 1971–72 and were promoted to Division One North of the Southern League. After finishing as runners-up in Division One North the following season, the club were promoted to the Premier Division, where they remained until folding at the end of the 1978–79 season. The club was immediately reformed as Atherstone United, taking the reserve team's place in Division One of the West Midlands (Regional) League. They were Division One champions in 1981–82, earning promotion to the Premier Division. After winning the Premier Division title in 1986–87, the club were promoted to the Midland Division of the Southern League. The following season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually losing 2–0 to VS Rugby in a first round replay. They were Midland Division runners-up in 1988–89, securing promotion to the Premier Division. In 1990–91 the club reached the FA Cup first round again; after beating Fleetwood Town 3–1 in the first round, they lost 1–0 at Third Division Crewe Alexandra in the second round.

Another FA Cup first round appearance the following season saw them hold Fourth Division Hereford United to a 0–0 draw at Sheepy Road, before losing the replay at Edgar Street 3–0. Atherstone finished bottom of the Southern League Premier Division in 1999–2000 season and were relegated to the Western Division. They subsequently folded midway through the 2003–04 season. The club was then reformed under the name Atherstone Town, joining Division One of the Midland Combination for the 2004–05 season. After winning Division One and the President's Cup in their first season, they were Premier Division champions and League Cup winners in 2005–06 and were promoted to the Midland Alliance. The club were Midland Alliance champions in 2007–08, earning promotion to Division One Midlands of the Southern League. In 2008–09 they finished third in the division, qualifying for the promotion play-offs, but lost the semi-final 5–0 to Chasetown Division One Midlands was renamed Division One Central in 2010, and Atherstone were relegated back to the Midland Alliance at the end of the 2010–11 season after finishing second-from-bottom of the division. They suffered a second successive relegation after finishing second-from-bottom of the Midland Alliance the following season, returning to the Premier Division of the Midland Combination. When the Combination merged with the Midland Alliance to form the Midland League in 2014, Atherstone were placed in Division One.

REFLECTIONS OF THE 2022/23 SEASON

r o l y a T f f i l C

with

The final Home game of the Season, and a time to reflect on what has been something of a steep learning curve. After 13 years playing at Step 4 Football, the Season 2022-23 saw us entering a new era of MDTFC Football in The Midland Football League Premier Division. During the past 13 Seasons we had played against the likes of Marine, Stafford Rangers, and Leek Town and traveled east to Spalding, west to Colwyn Bay, and north to Workington – playing in front of huge crowds in some fantastic stadiums. We were alert to the fact that football in the Midland Football League was of a very high standard, so we were fully aware that competition would require us to up our game, consolidate and build for the future. We did not anticipate being relegated. The Season got off to a great start – winning our first FA Cup tie in 7 Seasons with our victory versus Shifnal Town on the 6th August 2022, followed by us then winning our opening League game on the 13th August 2022 in the ‘Away’ game at Worcester City – the future looked bright. Unfortunately ‘the wheels then fell off the bus’; we lost in the next Round of the FA Cup and we had to wait until the 18th February 2023 before we gained another League point in our 1-1 drawn game versus Darlaston Town, During the 2022-23 Season, we have signed no less than 54 players as the three Management teams strived to create a winning formula. It’s a ‘big ask’ to operate a football club at this level in terms of finance and hard work both on and off the field.
