THE DUGOUT VIEW ood afternoon and welcome to this afternoons fixture at home to Cheadle Town FC. Our first meeting with Cheadle this season but if the two games last year are anything to go by, this will be a cracker that could go anyway. Since our last home fixture we’ve had a real mixed bag of results. A superb 4-0 win over local rivals Foley was followed up by a superb 1-1 draw away at Cheadle Nomads, who had won 6 on the bounce previously. This was followed by a 2-1 defeat away at third placed Brocton. The lads were absolutely fantastic and deserved at least a point but a really poor offside decision from the linesman ruled out a goal to put ourselves ahead, followed by a stonewall penalty turned down in the final few minutes. Not often I blame officials for results but we felt absolutely robbed. We travelled to Ashville on Wednesday night losing 3-0. The score was harsh with a red card at 0-0 in the second half of a tight game the real turning point. We look to get back to winning ways this afternoon. Thank you for your continued support

Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester & District Sunday Football League in their Under 16s Division. As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later. In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire FA Cups. Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division South. Park Road Stadium itself has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle Town on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendry foreign tours, having played 96 games (or 97 if you count our visit to play FC Isle of Man) in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals.

Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come. It was at this time that Cheadle Town made the decision to change their kit colours to green which commemorated the colours worn by Grasmere Rover 50 years ago. Cheadle Town are an England Football Accredited Club (formerly FA Charter Standard Community) acknowledging the most advanced level of club development and football provision. At the turn of the year in 2018 a new future for the club was heralded when it became part of the Little Sports Group, owned by ex-Cheadle Town player Craig Brennan. In May 2018 we were awarded a £50,000 improvement bursary from Buildbase that will enable us to realise our vision to improve the matchday experience and develop footballing facilities for the surrounding area. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic brought a temporary stop to playing football, as the FA declared seasons 2019/20 and 2020/21 null and void. But hopes are high for season 2022/23 following the appointment of Paul Marshall and Steve Yarwood in the close season. Paul brings with him a wealth of experience having played football at professional level for Manchester City, Blackpool, Port Vale, Aberdeen, Walsall and Rochdale before moving to semi-professional football with FC Halifax Town, Stockport County, Alfreton Town and Curzon Ashton. Whilst Steve Yarwood is well known in the Manchester area having played for Salford City, Mossley, Abbey Hey and Wythenshawe Town. It’s been over 20 years since Cheadle Town have been in the top division of the North West Counties Football League and we are hopeful that this will change this season.

REPORT

After Tuesday’s hard-won point at form team Cheadle Heath Nomads, Eccleshall travelled the short distance to Stafford for what promised to be a tasty local derby against high-flying Brocton. With recent signing Tom Winkle unavailable, manager Liam Kelly brought Callum Feeney and Mitch Glover into the starting line-up, with Ryan Malbon and Lucas Green-Birch dropping to the bench. Eagles went behind after only three minutes when a mistake by Ethan Stanton left Jake Thomas clear to fire past Aaron Woolrich. Brocton continued to attack in the early stages as Eccleshall took a while to get into their stride. Christian Blanchette was prominent in the home side’s early efforts, firstly setting up Will Whieldon, who volleyed over and then getting on the end of a cross by Adam Weldon only to head over the bar. Moments later, he pounced on a through ball only to fire over. Eagles were gradually working their way back and equalised on 22 minutes, when Glover carved his way into the box and his powerful shot had too much for home keeper Tony Allsopp, who got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out. Both sides were now looking for another goal and on 32 minutes, a thumping drive by Whieldon was tipped over the bar by Woolrich. In reply, a low Jordan Flattley cross into the box found Chris Boast clear with an easy chance, but the normally lethal striker put the ball the wrong side of the post. Minutes later, a free kick into the box found Glover and he blazed over when well placed. Eccleshall were now matching Brocton and, after a Regan Smith shot was held by Woolrich, Boast headed well over with the last chance of the half. HT: Brocton 1 Eccleshall 1 Eccleshall began the second period with early intent and Jordan Darlington ran through into the box only for his touch to let him down. Allsopp then had to run out to head clear as Boast and Darlington again ran through. Smith had a header just wide before Allsopp saved a Boast shot at his near post. On 61 minutes, it looked as though Eagles had gone in front when Aidan Blaise netted with a header, only to be controversially flagged offside. The decision proved crucial as Brocton went ahead on 72 minutes when sub Morgan Payne slotted home after Woolrich failed to hold the ball. They netted again a couple of minutes later, but offside was again the call. Kelly now rang the changes, bringing on Green-Birch, Malbon and Luke Lewis within a few minutes of each other and this led to Eagles applying some pressure on the home defence in search of an equaliser. Allsopp produced a superb one-handed save from a Glover volley before a Lewis shot was blocked for a corner. Tensions ran a little high as referee Howell had to deal with a melee in front of the dugouts and Flattley was booked for his part. Eagles came back and a Flattley free kick found Boast’s header coming back off the bar before a penalty shout for a foul on Lewis was turned down. His comments to the referee resulted in him being sin-binned for the remainder of the game. Brocton played out time to take the points. FT: Brocton 2 Eccleshall 1 Eagles will count themselves unlucky not to have got something from the game but need to become more ruthless in taking chances. They now travel to Ashville on Tuesday evening before facing Cheadle Town at Pershall Park next Saturday. Eagles: Woolrich, Darlington, Dunn, Pickup, Blaise, Stanton (Lewis), Benton (Green-Birch), Feeney (Malbon), Boast, Flattley, Glover. Unused subs: Groom, Woodroffe Referee: Mr Joshua Howell Attendance 127

2022/23 PLAYER STATS DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN PLAY AS ECCLESHALL IN FM? Look out for the English Lower Leagues Database from @DanFMDatabases on

GW - Oli Hickman because even though he went to private school me and him have about 3 brain cells between us so it would just be a room. AB - Definitely Darlo, the lad would get on my nerves within seconds. Which player is the last to get a round in on a team night out and who would be first at the bar? GW - First at the bar: Jord Flattley basically runs at the bar Last to get a round: Wilksey because he’s either asleep at the bar or he’s the last one out AB - Mitchell glover, that lad never buys a round. Flattley or myself Best player this season you have played with and why? GW - Chris Boasty. I like his all-round play and think he offers a lot of qualities on and off the ball. Great lad as well AB - I’d have to say boasty because of the impact he’s had on the team. He’s relentless and he deserves all the goals he’s scored so far for us, deserves a few more in all fairness. Best player you have played against this season and why? GW - CB from Stockport town, think he played for Stockport County in league two a few hundred times so I can’t really pick anyone else AB - The striker Darryl from Abbey Hey. Sure some of the lads will agree with me on this one, he gives me a tough time away at their place and they haven’t let me forget about it. Moment of the season so far you have loved and why? GW - Any of the vase wins can’t decide between any of them or my Twitter commentary at Rocester (the media man has a lot to live up to) AB - The whole FA Vase run was unreal, first experience of that and we all give it a right go. Scoring on my debut wasn’t bad either. Moment of the season so far you wish had not happened to you and why? GW - Alsager Town at home, even though we didn’t lose, personally I was terrible and I missed a sitter but it was a bank holiday so that speaks for itself AB - Missing a penalty in the vase against Hereford was a tough one to take. Liam has kindly reminded me I am now last in the pecking order at penalties.

TEAM MATE Q&A's

Who from the current squad would you least like to attend an escape room with and why?

If Liam said you can sign anyone to play in this current Eccleshall side who would you tell him to sign and why (can be any player in the game)? GW - Damien Duff because he’d be way better than me AB - Messi. Who is the worst dressed player? GW - Mitch glover as he wears his hood up in clubs AB - Mitchell Glover. He owns a SpongeBob T-shirt and happily wears it out.

GW - George Woodroofe

Which player in the squad would do well if they went on Countdown? GW - Jordan Benton because he’s an accountant but they just use excel and calculators AB - Cal Feeney, he’s a clever lad. If you could have one song to play when you score a goal what would it be and why? GW - Take that - relight my fire, the less said the better, but we wouldn’t hear it much with my goalscoring record AB - Fire Kasabian. If you are on a night out and miss your lift home which player would you call for a lift back home and why? GW - Aiden Blaise because he’d turn me back around and send me back to pink, which I class as home AB - None of them. They wouldn’t answer me.

AB - Aiden Blaise
