HONORING OUR PAST, CELEBRATING TODAY, SHAPING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER

A LETTER FROM PASTOR RYAN BALSAN

Dear friends,

Someone recently shared a history of the Wayne Presbyterian Church with me. It was written in 1970 commemorating our 100th Anniversary. Leafing through that book reminded me of something important: the Church has always lived in changing, challenging times. The task of the Church is to live faithfully in the moment, holding to our convictions and commitments and adapting to changing times. As I looked at that history, I saw that Wayne is a congregation that has a long tradition of faithfully adapting to an ever-changing world, seeking to be faithful in each season.

It is easy to see changes and adaptation when one looks at history over 100 years, but in any given moment in time, it is hard to see how we are changing. Transformation is gradual, and we often don’t discern the shifts, changes and adaptations we make except by looking back.

One of my tasks as your relatively new pastor is to learn about this congregation. Part of that is by learning our church’s

history and the values and ideas that shape us and our ministry. Another of my tasks is to help us learn how to adapt and live out our faith in this moment and in the future. In my first few months I have been amazed, but not surprised, at the resilience and strength of this congregation in the past, and it gives me hope for our future.

In this season of listening and learning about WPC, I have been leaning on something one of my mentors, Tod Bolsinger, taught me. Leaders need to have two perspectives – the view from the dance floor and the view from the balcony.

The view from the dance floor is the perspective at the ground level. It is where all the action happens. To be on the dance floor at church means to be in the midst of everything that is going on. Through worship, making connections at coffee hour, showing up at a youth ministry event, visiting the Common Place, experiencing the Oratorio Society in action and hearing your stories about the impact of this congregation has given me a glimpse into the dance floor at WPC. It is an active and engaged place!

We hope you enjoy this issue of the Wayne Press, which highlights many recent events and upcoming programs, but it can’t cover everything we do! Please visit waynepres.org regularly for more information and updates. Also visit the online Member Portal or contact the Church office to keep your membership records updated to make sure you receive our publications.

A LETTER FROM PASTOR RYAN BALSAN

continued from page 1

The perspective from the dance floor is important because it gives a view of our ministry in action. It is not only important to see it, but to be part of it, too. It’s where the most important things happen at church! It is energizing to see the many ways that Wayne Pres is at work, caring for each other, our community and the world. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t run into people who are active in mission in our community and beyond. Eyes light up when people tell me how they are involved in WPC’s ministry beyond 125 E Lancaster Avenue. It is one of the things that made me excited to come to Wayne in the first place.

For leaders, though, it is also important to move off the dance floor and look from the balcony. The balcony is the place where one looks from a different vantage point, trying to gain a larger perspective amid the swirl of activity and challenges that are in front of us. The balcony perspective is more reflective and is the place where one can begin to think about how to adapt our ministry and common life to meet the challenges of a changing world. As I think about the bigger picture, I have been asking myself, “How can we live into our calling to bring the light of Christ to Wayne and beyond?” I don’t have a complete answer to that question yet, but I am beginning to see some of the patterns and possibilities.

One thing I do know: whatever we do, however the patterns on our dance floor change, will be a reflection of our deepest values and concerns. These are the things that have been important to our life as a congregation from the beginning. These things include a commitment to follow Jesus Christ as Lord, encountering God in powerful worship, deep engagement with scripture, love for our neighbors and the world expressed in generosity and service and caring for one another. These things are foundational to our identity as a congregation and will not change, no matter what is happening on the dance floor.

I hope that some of you will also join me on the balcony as we evaluate, learn, pray and experiment together, seeking to find how God is calling us to live faithfully in these turbulent times.

Yours in Christ, Ryan Balsan

MEET PASTOR RYAN!

We held a variety of events throughout the fall to provide opportunities to meet our new senior pastor Ryan Balsan and his family. During two Lunch & Learns after worship in September, Ryan spent time introducing himself, his path to WPC, his leadership style, his thoughts regarding the dynamic change facing most churches today and the challenges and opportunities it presents. He has also attended many coffee hours, concerts, Bible studies, committee meetings, staff meetings, Session meetings, dinners in members’ homes and other gatherings. He has also preached many inspiring sermons!

For those who would like to get to know Ryan better, we have created a video series with more to come in which he shares information about his background, interests, leadership style and goals for his ministry at WPC. Click here to access the video libary.

REV. RYAN BALSAN INSTALLED AS THE 14TH SENIOR PASTOR OF WAYNE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

On November 10, WPC celebrated the installation of Rev. Ryan Balsan as our new senior pastor, marking a major milestone in the life of our church.

Many distinguished members of PC(USA) leadership, local clergy, pastoral colleagues and WPC leaders participated in the meaningful and joyful celebration, and many members of Ryan’s family and former congregations joined to honor him as well. The service included beautiful music led by John Grecia, including the hymn, As the Wind Song, featuring Rev. Katy Shevel on flute.

The service included a “Charge to the Newly Installed” by The Rev. Dr. Charles “Chip” Hardwick, speaking on behalf of Ryan’s steadfast group of fellow pastors who have provided spiritual support and friendship for 24 years. Rev. Hardwick shared humorous and deeply meaningful reflections from the group, including an observation that “You are a ‘radical orthodoxy’ kind of guy – in the sense that you have at your heart a deep and beautiful commitment to centering yourself on the life and teachings of Jesus…who called you and each one of us to follow, forgive, love and serve.”

The Rev. Dr. Ruth SantanaGrace, Executive Presbyter of the Philadelphia Presbytery, delivered the “Charge to the Congregation,” calling on WPC to be “torchbearers of the gospel, called to lead

on an uncharted journey toward the light that breaks into the darkness to help restore the heart, spirit and identity of a people.” Torchbearers have four qualities – vision, courage, resilience and joy. “These are marks of your call. So, my inspiring, brave torchbearers at WPC, may you continue to bear and be the light of Resurrection possibilities together.”

Other meaningful reflections and prayers were delivered by The Rev. Dr. Kimlyn Bender, who joined us from Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Elder Lloyd Higgins from Oxford Presbyterian Church, The Rev. Chris Holland, Executive Pastor at Salt & Light, Elder Jim Ballengee from First Presbyterian Church and moderator of the Philadelphia Presbytery, The Rev. Wonjae Choi, Pastor at Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church, WPC Associate Pastor Katy Shevel and WPC Elders Weezie Duff and Rebecca Craven Greenhow.

After Rev. Santana-Grace emphasized “joy” as our mandate, the service concluded with the hymn, We Will Go Out With Joy, and Ryan gave a Benediction that asked that we simply “Go out this day to love and serve the Lord. Let us go out as people who are not ashamed of the Gospel, because the Gospel is the power of God for the salvation of all who believe, and isn’t that the best news you’ve heard all day, or ever?” After the service, everyone gathered in the Chapel for a celebration of this significant and joyful event.

Click here to watch the Service of Installation online.

Ryan and Jen Balsan celebrated with Elder Weezie Duff, who represented the Pastor Nominating Committee in reading the Constitutional Questions to the Congregation during the service.

The Installation Service included a “laying on of hands,” as church leaders surrounded Ryan and his wife, Jen, for the Prayer of Installation.

ADULT EDUCATION

FELLOWSHIP OF THE BEAN

Who are those people in the Library and what are they doing?

Fellowship of the Bean, a relaxed faith-based discussion group, celebrated its one-year anniversary in October! Meeting in the Library on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., a group gathers as a community for conversation, fellowship and good coffee! Each week an inspiring topic, reading, video or Bible verse results in the group’s reflections about how we strive to live Christian lives more fully. This fall, “The Bean” has covered a wide array of subjects while connecting and reconnecting folks who have attended.

A few examples:

• Reflections from John Pavlovitz on his pastoral journey and expectations, as Ryan joined us. The group shared their prayers and hopes for Ryan’s season with WPC along with some of our Main Line Roast coffee we enjoy each week!

• How can we better understand and relate to our youth? We listened to examples of one Christian making a difference in their lives, and the commonality of youth and all of us seeking identity, belonging and purpose.

• Shared excerpts from Kate Bowler’s Blessings for the Lives We Actually Have.

• A historical look at toxic religion and toxic politics being intertwined.

• Finding common ground in our divided times – using a video of “The Interfaith Amigos” – a Rabbi, Imam and Priest finding ways to connect and how we might do that around election time.

• Diana Butler Bass’s reflections on the Biblical perspectives on gratitude.

Stop in… follow the smell of freshly brewed coffee into the Library and join us on Sunday mornings!

WinGS (WOMEN IN GOD’S SERVICE)

WinGS FALL BREAKFAST

“Here I Am, Lord. Send Me!”

Forty-eight women gathered early on a chilly November Saturday morning to nourish body and soul at the WinGS Fall Breakfast.

The ladies feasted on various quiche from Café Elegance, pastries and fruit. Carol Klauss lent her creative skill by providing seasonal centerpieces, and Rev. Katy Shevel stepped outside her pastor’s role to furnish musical accompaniment on the piano. The participants brought various boxed food items, spices and supplies to support the Casserole Ministry.

The theme of the breakfast and the entire WinGS program year is taken from Isaiah 6:8 – “ThenIheardthevoiceoftheLordsaying,‘WhomshallIsend, and whowillgoforus?’AndIsaid,‘HereamI;sendme!’”

Instead of the usual single-speaker format, the WinGS Board decided to look to the women of the congregation – those who have heard God’s call and answered, “Send Me” to make up our panel. Four women joined our speakers’ panel: Meg Born, Jacey Fancher, Lani Fabere and Wendy Norman.

Each of these women epitomizes the spirit of Isaiah 6:8. They all have a long history of service to Wayne Presbyterian Church as Deacons, Elders, Stewards, Sunday School teachers, committee members, Confirmation mentors and Wedding Coordinator. However, their commitment to serve outside the Wayne community sets them apart. Meg uses her background in educational counseling to serve as the Director of Student Support Services at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Jacey’s work with Spiritual Direction led her to The Common Place, where, among other passions, she heads up the clothing ministry. Lani’s greatest gift is her ability to get people engaged and involved. She will go wherever needed: Southwest Philly, Broad Street, Baker Industries, Wayne Senior Center – as long as it’s not a meeting! Wendy’s background as a prosecutor and Adjunct Law Professor seems at odds with her current role as a tutor at the Mitchell Elementary School. She looked surprised that she feels more rewarded and fulfilled teaching second graders phonics than teaching case law.

After the event, many women commented that though they had known these speakers for years as fellow congregants, their stories of faith and call were inspiring and uplifting.

MEMBERSHIP

PLEASE HELP MAKE WPC A WELCOMING COMMUNITY!

Together with the Andrew Minister Team and the Membership Committee, Pastor Katy has been re-working the manner in which we welcome visitors to WPC. The Andrew Minister Team plays a crucial role in contacting visitors via follow-up email or phone call, as well as greeting visitors on Sunday morning. Please take note of the small round table in the Connector, which Andrew Ministers staff during Sunday morning coffee hour and where small gift bags are available for our visitors. For any visitors who are seriously contemplating joining the Church, the next new members class will be held on Sunday, January 12, at noon, with reception of new members on the following Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. worship service.

All church members are engaged in this ministry of welcome and hospitality. During the Advent/Christmas season, we expect more visitors than usual, so please be aware of those who may be new to WPC. (“Are you new here, or just new to me?”). If you have a heart to be more formally involved, please consider joining the Andrew Minister Team or the Membership Committee. For more information or to make a suggestion as to how we can be even more hospitable to our visitors, please contact Pastor Katy (Katy@waynepres.org) or Pamela Jensen (jens0581@alumni.umn.edu).

SEASONS LUNCHEON FOR SENIORS CELEBRATES FAITHFULNESS AND FRIENDSHIP

On a beautiful, sunny, fall day with the sunlight streaming in the windows of the chapel, our seniors met for food and fellowship. The luncheon consisted of a delicious chicken pot pie prepared in Wayne Pres’ own kitchen by the Casserole Ministry. Coffee, tea and water service was provided by volunteers from the Confirmand class. The meal was rounded out with bread and salad with a warm apple crumble for dessert.

Jeanne Kauffman, Linda Teets and Rich McFarland shared stories of God’s faithfulness, the assurance of His love, and the inspiration to follow and serve. A free-will offering was taken to support the Casserole Ministry. This “Seasons”-themed luncheon concluded with all in attendance singing the chorus of “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, a sweet, a cappella joyful noise! Thank you to all who attended and all who worked to make this event a blessing! If you would like to get involved with future events that build community and caring, please contact Margie McPherson at mcphemargie@gmail.com.

FAITH IN ACTION

THE COMMON PLACE HAD A BUSY FALL!

• This November, The Common Place was selected for a 3-year, $60,000 per year grant with the United Benevolent Association of Philadelphia. UBA has targeted Southwest Philadelphia for this round of granting, and TCP will be part of a cohort of nonprofits with whom UBA is partnering in our neighborhood.

• TheCommonPlaceScholarsAfterschoolProgram is off to a fantastic start this academic year! With 30 eager students enrolled, we’ve been working hard to create a nurturing and engaging environment where scholars not only complete their homework but also build essential skills that will support their growth in and out of the classroom.

• One of the biggest highlights of the season was our Annual Fall Festival which brings the whole community together. Over 500 participants joined in the festivities. There were fun games, delicious food, live entertainment, lots of candy (thank you, WPC and WPNS) and plenty of family-friendly activities that everyone enjoyed.

• We are thrilled to share the exciting milestones from our Food Justice Initiatives Together, we’ve sown seeds of hope, harvested the fruits of our labor and expanded access to fresh, healthy food for our Southwest Philadelphia neighbors. This year has seen incredible developments, including the establishment of a brand-new garden at Southwest Presbyterian Church, featuring 9 raised beds that have already contributed to our mission of food sovereignty. Together, our gardens have produced approximately 400 pounds of fresh produce this season, helping to provide healthy food to families in need.

WHAT IS THE EVANGELICAL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IN CAIRO (ETSC) AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO US?

Susan and Vijay Aggarwal had the opportunity on a recent trip to Egypt to visit ETSC. “Evangelical” in the Middle East is a term used to identify a Protestant church and distinguish it from an Orthodox church such as the Coptic Christians in Egypt or the Greek Orthodox church.

ETSC is a Presbyterian seminary that educates ministers who serve in Arab-speaking countries and carry the message of hope and love to all. It is supported by our national PC(USA) church as well as many churches including WPC for almost 20 years. As we know, Christianity began in the Middle East, and it is very important to keep a remnant of our faith in that area. ETSC offers several degree programs for male and female students such as MDiv, ThM, DMin. and soon a PhD program. Besides Arabic and English, students study Greek and Hebrew. They also emphasize the development of contemporary technology skills like management, communication, leadership and preaching. They have obtained institutional accreditation from the European Council for Theological Education (ECTE) as an alternative provider of higher education.

They have about 100 students on site but about 600 more that study remotely. We met one student who will be going to Sudan when he graduates this year. The students were very happy we had come for a visit and were delightful to talk to. We toured the campus, which includes housing for professors as well as students. We met with two professors, the director of International Relations and Seminary President Rev. Dr. Samuel Rozfy. Also, it was a Wednesday, the day they have chapel, and attending the worship service was inspirational. The service was in Arabic, but they provided an interpreter using headphones. The passage that morning was Ezekiel 3, and in a God moment, Vijay’s Bible study in Wayne was studying the same passage that very morning.

From Dr. Rozfy: “Our faith in God allows our seminary to face the

As Pastor Ryan said in a recent sermon, not everyone will be able to visit the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, but you can feel a part of their mission to train and educate folks who will preach the word to the faithful in places like Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Dubai, Jordan, Kuwait, Philippines, Ghana, the United States and others.

MUSIC

MUSIC TRANSFORMS CONCERT ROCKS THE SANCTUARY TO BENEFIT CORNERSTONE ORCHESTRA

The Music Transforms “Choral/Song” concert on November 17 to benefit the Cornerstone Christian Academy Orchestra (CCAO), a ministry of WPC, in partnership with Cornerstone Christian Academy, was a smashing success as John Grecia and Band along with a choir of 50 singers, presented music from rock/pop to gospel to traditional, demonstrating the sacred within the secular world of music throughout all genres. Music from Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Billy Joel and others brought joy, contemplation, healing and just plain fun. John Grecia is credited with the choral arrangements, keyboards, harmonica and vocals; Associate Music Ministries Director Ryan Fleming directed the choir. Guest musicians played guitar, bass and percussion. The packed audience was inspired and invigorated by the energy and spirit of the afternoon, ending with a standing ovation. A catered reception followed and provided a great opportunity for the audience to meet and greet John Grecia, Ryan Fleming, the band members and the choir members.

Joe Kauffman, who directs the CCAO with his wife, Nellie Kauffman, gave a brief message about the orchestra as a free will offering was collected. The organization provides musical instruments, weekly lessons, orchestra rehearsals and performance opportunities for 40 select students at Cornerstone Christian Academy in southwest Philadelphia. WAYNE ORATORIO SOCIETY PRESENTS A SEA SYMPHONY

We began our 2024-25 season by continuing our choral explorations and going out to sea; presenting an Oratorio Society premiere of Ralph Vaughn Williams’ A Sea Symphony. This monumental work, a roughly 68-minute choral symphony scored for chorus, soprano & baritone soloists and orchestra, sets the vivid, mystic and expansive poetry of Walt Whitman, selected from Leaves of Grass, to striking effect.

Completed in 1909 and first performed in Leeds, England in 1910, A Sea Symphony helped set the stage for a new era of symphonic and choral music in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. British choral music had enjoyed a long and distinguished tradition, from Purcell and Handel through to Stanford, Parry and Elgar, but the striking originality of the work, the masterly handling of the orchestral and choral forces, its boldness, energy and vivid orchestration, sets it apart as a wholly new and important addition to the choral repertoire.

This symphony gazes at the sea but realizes it is a symbol for the infinite, the divine. The ship, so vividly described in Whitman’s prose, can metaphorically be seen as describing the journey of the human soul – moving out through the vast, deep waters of life and then disappearing over the horizon, into the great spiritual unknown. Vaughan Williams’ music, combined with Whitman’s evocative text, creates a powerful and contemplative work that resonates with themes of unity, exploration and the eternal human spirit.

With eternal thanks to all who continue to support the Wayne Oratorio Society, and with great excitement we are looking ahead to the performances of Mass in D, by John Knowles Paine, on April 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss it!

CHILDREN’S CHOIR RETURNS!

We were all very excited to welcome the Children’s Choir and the Westminster Youth Choir back to worship on October 27, under the direction of our Associate Director of Music Ryan Fleming. These choirs have a long history as part of our music ministry, and it’s great to see them flourishing once again. The children definitely are our future, and with your continued prayers of encouragement and support, they will be blessing us with their music for years to come! You’ll see both groups again on December 8 at the 9:30 a.m. service, and on Christmas Eve.

Psalm 8:2 “From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise.”

COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP EVENTS

ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC

Over two hundred members gathered on Sunday, September 8, to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon enjoying conversation, music and fellowship while celebrating the start of fall and new programming at WPC. Picnickers dined on hot dogs with all the fixings, delicious pizza, an array of tempting salads, soft pretzels and some mighty fine homemade desserts. An ice cream truck in the Courtyard did a brisk business serving yummy cold treats to all. Young WPC members enjoyed moon bounces in the parking lot, as well as lining up for face painting and crafts in the Connector. Cornerstone Christian Academy Scholars and their families were honored at the morning worship service and at the picnic with a celebratory cake and photographs. Thanks to everyone who came to enjoy this special day and to the volunteers who worked hard to make it happen. What a great way to welcome everyone back!

RADNOR FALL FESTIVAL

In support of the Wayne community, WPC once again participated in the annual Radnor Fall Festival held on Sunday, September 15. This year saw the debut of our own branded tent along North Wayne Avenue! There was plenty of traffic at the WPC booth which featured informational flyers on our programs, branded merchandise, iced cold bottles of water and a duck pond with prizes for the kids. It was a great introduction to the Wayne community for Pastor Ryan.

WITH YOUR HELP, WE CONTINUE TO GROW OUR IMPACT FOR CHRIST AND HIS KINGDOM

This fall has been filled with excitement as we’ve had the privilege of welcoming and installing our new Senior Pastor and Head of Staff Rev. Ryan Balsan. We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support of the ministry at Wayne Presbyterian Church. Your contributions – whether through prayers, service or giving – are vital to our church’s mission. As we look ahead, we’re eager to build on this momentum and expand our impact for Christ and His Kingdom.

To help us plan and sustain our ministries, we rely on pledges – commitments to give a specific amount of financial support over the coming year. Pledges provide a clear estimate of anticipated contributions, allowing the Church to plan its budget and ministries more effectively. Please note, pledging does not require an immediate gift – it’s simply an estimate of your donations for the coming year.

To those who have already committed, we offer our most sincere gratitude. If you haven’t pledged yet, there’s still time! We invite you to prayerfully consider your most generous gift for the next year. Every contribution matters as we strive to live into our mission and be a light in the Wayne community and beyond. Your prayers, service and gifts empower us to carry out God’s work, and we want every member of our church family to be part of what He is doing here.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, let’s make 2025 a year of even greater ministry and impact!
