Marie-Louise Ekman alternates between art, theatre and film. In her idiosyncratic imagery, Ekman often repeats a set of characters in scenes where relationships and roles gradually shift, and the theatre is a recurring metaphor. Kristiansand is also known as the children’s city and there is a host of activities aimed at them, such as the Animal Park, with everything from wildlife to pirates and bathing. Other activities for the whole family include Aquarama the giant waterpark, Planet Pluto - one of the largest playgrounds in Sörlandet, as well as the Setedalsbanen - an eight kilometre long railway museum, where you can travel on 100-year old steam locomotives and wagons. From Kristiansand you also have easy access to other parts of the archipelago via boat, such as the M/S Bragdøya bathing boat, which runs trips to Bragdøya, Indre Randøya, Stokken and Dvergsøya from late June to mid August. Other possibilities are to take the M/B Øya between Lillesand and Kristiansand, or take the M/B Høllen between Høllen and Ny-Hellsund. And don’t forget popular spots like Fiskebrygga and the charming old houses at Posebyn.

hite-painted wooden houses, bathing from rocks and beaches, fishing boats, seafood and the islands of the archipelago. Norway’s smallest and southernmost region, Sörlandet, is a real idyll in the summer months, and the unofficial capital, Kristiansand, is a holiday magnet for many Norwegians. The fifth largest city in Norway is said to have the most sunny days per year, so it’s not so strange that it is seen as the country’s premier holiday city. In the centre of Kristiansand lies the city’s beach, Bystranda. A sandy beach with palm trees and beach volleyball that hosts Scandinavia’s biggest beach party, Palmesus, each year with a variety of artists and DJs, attracting a lot of young people. Other beaches include Paradisbukta at Evje, Hamreseanden, Baneheia, a park and recreation area, and Helleviga beach, between Kristiandsand and Søgne.

If you would rather enjoy the culture of the city, then there is also plenty to choose from. The pearl in the shell is the relatively newly built Kliden, which is the city’s theatre and concert hall, an architecturally exciting masterpiece, with space for over 2,000 visitors. It is located on Odderøya, just outside of Kristiansand, and just like the Opera in Oslo, has become a bit of a landmark at the head of the harbour. SKMU Sørlandets Art Museum is located in the centre of Kristiansand, showing a mix of permanent exhibitions of Norwegian art from the 19th century onwards, as well as changing exhibitions of paintings and other visual arts. Other exhibition venues include the Kristiansand Art Hall and Agder Art Centre. So maybe this summer it’s time to do as thousands of Norwegians do each year and discover Norway’s riviera.

The kings of Dalarna Text: Thomas Rödin

Back – stronger than ever

Mando Diao, the band from Swedish Dalarna, are back and their first single ‘Shake’ shows that their sound has travelled back in time before poet Gustaf Fröding and the electronic 80’s influences of the band’s last album. In May, Mando Diao released their first record since front man Gustaf Norén’s departure. 16 BEST WAY 02.17

Mando Diao

We have a good feeling about the new songs and want to play them to the world. “I was a little worried that our egos would get in the way, and was a bit nervous as we have never worked this way before. But when it came to the test we simply picked out the best songs, no matter who wrote them,” Björn continues. The band, which in recent years has become known for changing musical direction, describes the music on the new album Good Times as dance music. “We have always liked to mix disco and rock, and Good Times is a mix of ballads, soul and danceable rock music. We had an idea that we would like to create a rock album, but at the same time we all listen to a lot of dance music so this is a mix of the two genres,” says Jens. “You could probably say that the one thing constant throughout our career is that we have never had anything constant! We have not

thought about it too much, just let inspiration and spontaneity take over,”says Björn. Was it through such spontaniety that ‘Infrusen’ was born? “It was a friend of Gustaf’s who thought we should record interpretations of poet, Gustaf Fröding in Swedish. We did most of it as a fun thing and were quite convinced the record companies would think it was too ‘arty’ and wouldn’t want to release it. To some extent, we were right since 5-6 record companies turned it down, but Sony were totally sold on the concept, and the rest, so to speak, is history. Maybe we had underestimated somewhat Fröding’s influence on the Swedish people’s souls,” says Björn. The record, was recorded in various studios, among them on Gotland and in Koppom and has been ready for a few months now with the band themselves taking care of production. After a few months at home, the band members are now eager to get out on the road again. In the summer they start a European Tour which includes a gig at the Bråvalla Festival. This Autumn, more gigs are planned in Sweden and Japan. “We have a good feeling about the new songs and want to play them to the world. It feels like we have found some new energy in the band as we could focus entirely on music instead of conflicts. Certainly there was some nervousness when we were going to do our first gig without Gustaf, but it disappeared after 2-3 songs when we felt the love of the audience,” says Björn. But what was it that caused Gustaf Norén's departure? The band itself see it as the end of a relationship. “A total crash, Gustaf just did not want to do this anymore, play in a band and all that it meant. And of course, there have been times when we in the band have been fighting over what direction we wanted to take musically. It’s not much fun when the chemistry in the band isn’t right and causes conflict. You learn from it too, but it’s nothing fun. We were so young when we broke through, and sometimes you do not think about things really because everything goes so fast,” says Björn.

Photo: Charli Ljung

It is two years since Gustaf left, but Mando Diao are still going strong. Today the band consists of singer and guitarist Björn Dixgård, bassist CarlJohan Fogelklou, keyboardist Daniel Haglund and drummer Patrik Heikinpieti. When Norén left, he was replaced by Jens Siverstedt on guitar. “The constellation of the band looks basically like when Gustaf left, the only difference is that Jens was not with us. I think the dynamics of the group have improved as some of the old roles have changed”, says Björn Dixgård. “Before, Björn and Gustaf wrote all the songs, but today everyone is more involved in the work and songwriting. When we started recording, we had 40 demos, which were then filtered down to 20 before we finally ended up with 12 songs for the album,” Jens adds.

“Sometimes relationships are over and it is obviously difficult. We are like a family that lives close to each other large parts of the year. That’s why we’re constantly trying to look after the relationships within the band. Now it’s relationships first, and then the music second. It’s an important priority if you’re going continue, I think, ” continues Jens. What direction the remaining members chose to go we saw this May when Good Times was released. And even though they have no contact with Gustaf Norén today, they are not closing any doors to any eventual link up in the future. “The title track on the record is written by Carl-Johan and myself along with our former drummer Samuel Geirs, who was kicked out of the band in 2011. I had never anticpated that happening, so there are openings for everything in the whole world, all the time,” concludes Björn Dixgård.

Stockholm Archipelago

T

he Stockholm archipelago consists of around 30,000 islands and there are many ways to experience them. Everything from kayaking and overnight camping, to renting your own boat, complete with crew and cook, and then spending the night on a suitable old steam boat or luxury hotel. In between there are plenty of options to fit everyone’s wallet. The simplest way is actually to take any of the ferry boats that operate the archipelago, originating from central Stockholm, either from Strömkajen or along Nybrokajen. Here there are many to choose from so you just need to decide what to see and how long you want to be gone. Take either a quick jaunt, a day trip or why not take a cruise along the North-South Line, a 70-mile long trip along the beautiful outer archipelago. You can also go on a day trip by sailing boat or even rent one yourself. Here are Best Way’s ten tips for summer activities in the Archipelago.

Visit a pub The popular Fjäderholmarnas krog is a restaurant which has been mentioned in the White Guide and has its own brewery. Boat companies that come here are Strömma, Waxholmsbolaget, Fjäderholmslinjen and SL’s new Sjövägen. You can also take your own boat and moor it by the jetty. www.fjäderholmarnaskrog.se

Grinda One of the most popular tourist destinations in the archipelago, just an hour’s boat trip from the city. Only accessible by boat, either your own or with Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderellabolaget. Perfect for a cheap day trip. Take your own picnic basket or purchase from the store. Boat tickets cost from 95 SEK one way. www.grinda.se

Saltkråkan There is still life in the Astrid Lindgren story - We at Saltkråkan, even though the TV-series was recorded in the 1960s. This isn’t the island’s real name - it is actually called Norröra, just outside Furusund, where Astrid lived in the summer and wrote the script for the popular series. www.blidosundsbolaget.se

Listen to the steamboat blues The old steam boat S/S Blidösund departs all summer from Skeppsholmskajen. On board you can listen to many famous Swedish musicians. This is also the boat that runs to Norröra on Sundays. www.blidosundsbolaget.se

A whole day’s sailing

Jeppe Wikström/mediabank.visitstockholm.com

If you do not sail yourself, there are some options where you can join a full or half-day trip, even if you have no previous sailing experience. One of these is Stockholm Adventures, which offers sailing on one of their 40-52 ft boats, including captain and meals. It starts from Waxholm and the trip takes about 8 hours. Eminess Chartersegling also organises similar excursions. Even Sailing Events allow you to come out with them, alternatively experienced sailors can hire their own boat, which you can also do at Sailon and Sailmarine. www.stockholmadventeures.com / www.seglaistockholm.se www.sailingevents.se / www.sailon.se / www.sailmarine.se

Paddle a kayak A popular way to see the archipelago while getting close to nature is kayaking. There are a lot of options and places to hire, everything from tours in Stockholm city in a few hours, to several day excursions. Here you can also choose between sleeping in tents and cooking your own meals, or spending the days at sea, then staying in a hotel. One of the fun options is a two-day trip: one night in a tent and the other in a castle. www.dalarokajak.se / www.ingmarsokajak.se www.kajak-uteliv.com / www.horisontkajak.se Photo: Henrik Trygg/mediabank.visitstockholm.com

After the trip, you can spend the night on another old boat, Prince of Orangia, as the people behind the Oaxen and Slip restaurants have turned it into a hotel. It is the same deal with a more modern boat, Mercedita, which can be hired from Nordic Yacht Charter. www.myalba.se / www.oaxen.com / www.nordicyachtcharter.se

You can eat lunch, brunch and dinner at sea. Strömma Kanalbolaget has different options with S/S Stockholm and M/S Prince Carl Philip. Departures from Strandvägen and Stadshusbron. Even the Blidösund company has lunch in the archipelago aboard its three boats S/S Blidö, S/S Storskär and S/S Norrskär. with departures from Strömkajen. There are also many other possibilities, check out: www.restauranguidenstockholm.se/index.php/restaurangermed-havsutsikt/middagskryssningar/ www.stromma.se / www.blidosundsbolaget.se

Island hopping in the archipelago Use the existing ferries to get around the Stockholm archipelago, hopping on and off whenever you want, stay for a night or two on an island, then go on to the next. Waxholmsbolaget has an island hopping map that can be obtained with the purchase of a travelcard or ticket, where they have suggested itineraries and things to do along the way. They co-ordinate public transport and have divided the area into the southern, middle and northern archipelago. If you plan to make a lot of trips you can buy an island hopping card that lasts for five days and costs 445 SEK, or you can of course buy single tickets as you go. If you want to be out for a longer time then there are period cards available. You can also experience the Swedish version of Hurtigruten, the Royal Stockholm Cruise Line boat trip between Stockholm and Nyköping with M/S Saga Lejon, the largest ship in the archipelago. www.visitstockholm.se / www.battaxi.se www.waxholmsbolaget.se / www.gota-kanal.se

Sweden Hotels

Best Western Hotels & Resorts becomes Sweden's largest hotel chain With 59 new hotels, Best Western Hotels & Resorts has strengthened its position in the market and will now offer its guests an even greater range of hotel rooms around Sweden.

T

hrough its purchase of Sweden Hotels, Best Western Hotels & Resorts becomes the largest hotel chain in Sweden with 135 hotels and a total of 180 hotels in Scandinavia. The purchase of Sweden Hotels is in line with Best Westerns strategy for future expansion. “We are constantly thinking about how we can grow and increase the number of hotels because it strengthens our position in the market. The more we grow, the more attractive we become for our customers, and the more resources are available to develop the chain. From this point of view, the purchase of Sweden Hotels was a good addition with the fact that the way they work, with smaller and privately owned hotels, is very similar to us, says Johan Michelson, Sweden Manager for Best Western Hotels & Resorts. 24 BEST WAY 02.17

“Our customers would like to have a good network wherever they travel, and through the merger we can now offer more hotels in more locations, such as Malmö and Gothenburg, where demand has been high.” Best Western has, in itself, enjoyed very positive growth in recent years, including its soft brand Best Western Premier Collection, which is very well thought of, and the acquisition of Sweden Hotels is a further strengthening of the brand. There are also plans to develop a similar concept to the Premier Collection, but at the other end Johan Michelson of the price scale,

with hotels offering a lower price picture, but still having access to all the Best Western membership benefits. As for the newly acquired hotels, Johan says that the change will happen at a slower pace, something he believes is a good strategy. “We would like to get to know the hotel owners who are in Sweden Hotels to hear what they have for ambitions and ideas,” he says. “This means that the Sweden Hotels brand will remain for a while and the hotels can choose whether they want to join Best Western as soon as possible, or if they prefer to wait and stay under the Sweden Hotels brand until further notice”, concludes Johan.

Oslo

A ‘skam’ to miss it

Oslo city centre and coastline

The boys and girls at Hartvig Nissen’s school in Oslo have taken the whole world by storm, and the drama series has reached all the way to Hollywood. You can bet that Skam will also have an effect on tourism. Most Skandinavians tend to think of Stockholm or Copenhagen if they want to visit a capital city close-up, whilst Oslo and Helsinki are often forgot. But it’s a shame that not even more travellers discover the old Kristiania, as Oslo was known until 1925. Magnificent scenery creeps close to the Norwegian capital, which allows you to combine the city pulse with nature activities and enjoy the silence in the woods and fields. On day one let your inner culture take over with Ibsen and Munch, the opera and the art museum. Day two it’s time for an excursion. Stay on one of the islands in the Oslo Fjord, hike in Hardangervidda or travel down to the

fortfress of Fredriksten and see where the Swedish king, Karl XII was killed in battle in 1718. Oslo is an old city. It was founded in 1050. But it was only in the 19th century that things started to happen. Then there were no more than 9,000 inhabitants in the city, but since learning to utilize the energy from the rivers in and around the city, it has grown rapidly. At the turn of the century 240,000 people lived here and today the figure is around 650,000. The city is growing fast, almost bursting at the seams. There are plenty of new and interesting art and architecture and Oslo is a very easy place to visit. If you are staying in the central area for a weekend you will find many attractions within walking distance. There are also bicycles you can borrow throughout the city. You only need to order a key card for 70 NOK at www.oslobysykkel.no. And off you go.

The subway, buses, trams and ferries are all operated with the same ticketing system so it’s easy to get around even if you do not want to walk or cycle. If you invest in an Oslopass for 500 NOK, then you receive unlimited travel with public transport whilst also getting free admission to the city’s many interesting museums. The pass is valid for three days and also gives you other discounts which may be interesting. If you have limited time and want to see the main sights then the pass is well worth the money. Oslo is not the world’s cheapest capital. But consider some of the tips above, and note that there are a lot of affordable budget solutions for residents. You can stay in a tent free of charge on some of the islands in the fjord. How many capitals can offer such a green-blue solution?

Geneva International Motor Show 2017

From the everyday to state of the art Text: Ian Maasing

This year’s International Motor Show in Geneva attracted over 690,000 visitors who were wowed by the super-expensive, superstrong and super-fast cars on display. Such as Swedish sportscar Koenigsegg with their top of the range Regera.

Koenigsegg Regera Koenigsegg of Sweden, who builds small-scale super sports cars in a hangar at the old airport in Ă„ngelholm, has committed themselves to cracking Bugatti, Ferrari and the others in the high end bracket. At Koenigsegg's 32 BEST WAY 02.17

stand were the first two customerordered cars of a total of 80 to be manufactured. With a turbo-charged V8 engine of 1100 hp and three electric motors with a total of 700 hp combined, a maximum power of 1500

Cars for the more ordinary of us were also in abundance. We could inspect the compact Seat Ibiza in its latest vintage, the new generation of small mid-range SUV Subaru XV, the slightly bigger and more spacious generation of BMW 5 Series combi, the new Opel Insignia as a sedan and combi, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover, the new mid-range Volvo XC60 and the Volkswagen Golf with its latest facelift. Here is just a small selection from the magnificent exhibition halls near Geneva Airport.

hp and a torque of 2000 Newton metres. The enormous torque is enough to accelerate the compact twin-seat car from 0-300 km/h in 10 seconds and to 400 km/h in just 20 seconds and then a top speed at 415 km/h.

Volkswagen Arteon

Audi Q8

Ferrari 812 Superfast

The Arteon can easily be compared to the four-door coupés from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The detail work is at least as solid, the interior is at least as spacious, and the vehicle at least as comfortable on all kinds of surfaces. The sleek sweeping body shape measures 486 centimetres in length and under the bonnet is a choice of three engines, one petrol and two diesels. The car will be in production within a month and is set to be launched in Scandinavia after summer. The Arteon will be a worthy substitute for the expired Passat CC model.

The Q8 is Audi’s new concept car for a sporty, crossover with the SUVs high lower part combined with the low-top part of a combi-coupe. The Q8 Sport Concept has a 3-litre turbo-charged petrol engine where the turbocharger is powered electrically. Between the engine and gearbox there is an electric motor/generator that provides extra power when needed. Total system power is 476 hp and there is a maximum torque of 700 Newton metres. 0-100 km/h is 4,7 seconds with a top speed limited to 275 km/h.

The new Ferrari 812 Superfast is ideally suited to the super league with its 12-cylinder engine of 800 hp and a torque of 713 Newton metres, but is somewhat more modest compared with the Koenigsegg Regera. Thanks to a dense lightweight construction with a lot of aluminum and many details in carbon fiber reinforced plastic, it accelerates in ‘lower’ shifts: 0-100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. Although the top speed is a ‘mere’ 340 km/h versus Koenigsegg’s 400 km/h!

Photo: Ian Maasing

This is the Porsche to choose if you need room for three-four passengers, several golfbags and slalom skis and wish to drive when there is snow on the roads. The Panamera Sport Turismo is an elegant four-door combi coupé with four or five seats and fourwheel drive. The strongest version comes with a V8 engine, along with an electric motor. The plug-in Turbo SEHybrid has a total of 680 hp and a torque of 850 Newton Metres from 1400 rpm. 0-100 km/h is cleared in 3.4 seconds and the maximum speed is 310 km/h.

Porsche Panamera

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet With a calm body shape in harmony with its dynamic front, this car is based on the new E-Class Coupé with seating for four adults and a 310 litre trunk. Initially available with a choice of three instantly injected efficient petrol engines, as well as a direct injection diesel engine ranging from 184 to 333 hp. The AMG versions with higher performance and four-wheel drive will come later. All models have a nine-speed automatic box where the driving power goes to the rear wheels or in the case of the 4MATIC versions to all four wheels.

Lexus LS500 Lexus present the fifth generation of the flagship LS. The rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive luxury sedan has been fitted with a brand new platform. The distinctive look of the front has sleek headlights, a long bonnet and is complemented by extra long shoulder spacing, high-shoulder body sides and big 20-inch wheels. It launched with two different engines: a newly developed V6 engine with dual turbine of 415 hp and 600 Newtonmetres torque; and a full hybrid with a V6 and two turbo motors with a total system power of 354 hp. There are a total of 14 airbags in the top version!

Design company Italdesign, together with aircraft manufacturer Airbus, showed off their special flying electric car - Pop.Up, which is made up of three modules. A bottom plate with electric motor, battery and four wheels; a twoperson capsule plus a giant four-rotor drone. With Pop.Up you can travel on the ground, and if the situation allows, float above it. DS 7 Crossback

Volvo XC60

Prior to the show, the PSA Group (Peugeot and Citroën’s luxury car brand) finished the medium-sized crossover DS 7 Crossback. It looks really nice with its smoothly rounded shapes and a moderately large vertical front grille. The high ceilings of the crossover provide an airy interior and the good ground clearance prevents you from getting stuck in the first small snowfall or gravel yard, regardless of whether the car is two or four-wheel driven. The car initially has the option of three petrol engines and a diesel ranging from 130 to 230 hp. A plug-in hybrid will be launched at a later date.

The new XC60 has grown in most departments compared with its predecessor. The body is 469 centimetres long, 190 centimetres wide and 166 centimetres high. The axle spacing is 287 centimetres. And thanks to the use of super strong hotmolded brushed steel, the body weight has been reduced, although the shape is still unmistakenly Scandinavian. The nose has been made more upright and a bit rounder with a completely redesigned grill. Inside the discreet headlight glass, the T-shaped light signatures, also known as Thors hammer, are visible.
