Canada tops destination list Did you know that Canada is the hottest place to visit in 2017? That is according to Lonely Planet’s annual list ‘Best in Travel’.

Checked in by a robot? The world is becoming more and more digital. We interact via social media, we buy more products and services online and new businesses build their success on digital business models.

Visiting Vancouver? Then check out Georgian Court Hotel, BW Premier Collection®, a full service boutique hotel located a few metres from BC Place Stadium (home of the Vancouver Canucks), Rogers Arena, fashionable Robson Street and many of downtown Vancouver’s main attractions.

All this creates new openings for the hotel industry but also poses a challenge to keep up with developments. New booking channels have emerged that make it easier for guests to get information about hotels all around the world. It is also much easier to share their experiences with others, which impacts on other guests’ choice of hotel. Sites such as TripAdvisor have reviews that reach millions of people. Other interesting developments are the new markets that are emerging thanks to the digital revolution, for example, Airbnb. People have rented out rooms and houses over many years but Airbnb, through its digital platform, has succeeded in marrying providers and guests, thus creating a partially new market. Another area within the hotel industry which is developing rapidly at present is the development of digital services. In the future, guests can choose their room in advance, go to the room direct and open the door with their smartphones. There are also pilot projects where room service and cleaning are performed using robots. Some of the new technology will certainly add value and be appreciated by guests though a large part of a hotel stay is still the personal service and welcoming smile you get when you come to the hotel. It is Best Western’s aim to always be the personal and local option, so we are a long way from replacing people with technology. Johan Kukacka, CEO johan@bestwestern.se

Documentary and portait photography Does documentary photography show a true picture of the world? Do portrait photographs capture a person’s identity? Today pictures are shared in vast numbers on social media. The exhibition SNAP explores how photography has pictured people from the 19th century to the present. It sheds light on three key periods in the documentary genre: 1880s social documentary, 1960s street photography, and 1990s everyday documentary. Shown at Oslo’s Museum of Contemporary Art until 3 September. Photo: Nasjonalmuseet - Frode Larsen

Eva Röse returns to Dramaten

New version of La Bohème A young woman knocks on the door of a loft apartment in the old town and a young poet opens. This meeting is the beginning of one of the greatest love stories of our time. Taking inspiration from his own time as a poor student, Giacomo Puccini composed a warm and passionate opera following

four young bohemians in Paris at the turn of the century. The famous tenor, director and conductor José Cura gives Puccini’s operatic masterpiece a Nordic twist and transfers La Bohème from Paris to a fictitious Stockholm. Playing at the Royal Opera, Stockholm until 14 June.

For each choice we make in life, we have to reject something else. But what if we get the chance to choose if..? Eva Röse returns to Dramaten as Ellida in Ibsen’s classic Fruen fra havet (Lady from the sea), a story of life crises, life choices and unfinished business. Director Sofia Jupither has previously had great success with Ibsen’s Ghosts at the Stockholm Stadsteater in 2010, which was also shown on national television, and Little Eyolf which became a huge success at the National Theatre in Oslo in 2014. Premiere at Dramaten in Stockholm on 4 May. Photo: Johannes Berner

ven if you have been to Copenhagen many times, it feels like each visit to the Danish capital has something new to offer. This year the city is awash with exciting additions. A new multi-purpose arena, a centre for science and technology, a ski slope on the roof of Copenhagen’s new energy plant and an expansion of the classic Tivoli. Along many new openings of hotels and restaurants, this makes 2017 an exciting year for a visit to Copenhagen. Experimentarium on Tuborg Havnevej 7, about 15 minutes outside of central Copenhagen was inaugurated at the end of January. It boasts amongst other things, the world’s first interactive cinema, as well as 16 challenging and interactive science exhibits. The end of January also marked the opening of a new food hall in the form of Westmarket, which is also Denmark’s largest, at Vesterbrogade 97. And just like at Torvehallerne in Nørrebro you can enjoy a whole range of food, wine, beer

and coffee. In Vesterbro later on in the year, the city shall open a new architectural landmark - Axel Towers: five round soaring towers on Axeltorv Square. It will house mostly offices, but there is space for shops and restaurants on the bottom two floors, with a sky bar/restaurant at the top on the tenth floor. Royal Arena is Copenhagen’s new multi-purpose arena on Hannemans Allé 18-20 in Ørestad, which opened in early February. The 35,000 m2 building is designed for concerts and sporting events, and later in the summer, Rod Stewart amongst others will perform here. It will also host the World Ice Hockey Championships in 2018. More news for winter sports enthusiasts is the opening of Copenhill/ Amager Bagge, on Vindmøllevej 6. This artificial ski slope on the roof of the new power plant on Amager opens in December and will be open all year round.

Another known restaurateur, Rasmus Bo Bojesen, who previously managed the restaurant at the Opera, has now moved to another famous musical institution – Montmartre, the classic jazz club, which nowadays serves Nordic soul food for both lunch and dinner. And the micro brewing enthusiasts from Mikkeller are opening a new breakfast restaurant at Victoriagade with focus on delicious stuffed bagels. Where to go Jaegersborggade on Nørrebro became one of Copenhagen’s hottest addresses some years ago, and the interest lingers on at one of the city’s hippest streets. It brings together galleries, jewel designers and vintage stores with wine bars, cafés such as The Coffe Collective and the Michelin restaurant, Relæ, to name a few. Værnedamsvej is also known as Copenhagen’s Paris because of its French atmosphere. And just like on Jaegaersborggade it is a mix of small shops, cafés and restaurants, such as Granola, a cool diner in retro style with its cosy backyard where you can enjoy a drink or a coffee, or the luxury deli, Le Gourmand, with its French specialties, along with the restaurant Les Trois Cochones. Kødbyen is located on the now equally hip Vesterbro and can be said to be Copenhagen's answer to New York’s Meatpacking District. The synonyms are many and it is now crowded with restaurants, nightclubs and galleries, and is a popular haunt for Copenhagen nightlife on weekends. Papirøen is one of the most exciting new areas being developed in Copenhagen. In the grey industrial halls, which previously held tons of paper, are today bursting with creativity, including art, showrooms and street food. Though you will need

to hurry up, as when the contract runs out this year it will close down. Design Museum Denmark is a must for anyone interested in design. There are various exhibits focusing on shape, design and crafts. There is a lovely café, where in summer, you can sit outside, and an even nicer store with lots of inspirational books. www.designmuseum.dk Nationalmuseet is Danmark’s largest museums and is essentially several museums in one. www.natmus.dk Nikolaj kunsthall is an art gallery located in the old Sankt Nikolaj Church, which shows many exciting exhibits. Wine from

Australia

Twenty-five years ago a plethora of Australian wines were launched, coinciding with Sweden’s sales monopoly of wines and spirits. They bought both low and medium priced wines in large quantities and thus could purchase the vinyards’ top wines at a very good price. Australia still has many wine drinking admirers even if the Swedes have opened their eyes to other countries in the southern hemisphere. In January this year I visited Australia to explore some of the top wine regions. 18 BEST WAY 01.17

Wine from Australia

O

on the first evening in Adelaide, in the heart of South Australia, I visited a nice street full of restaurants in the central area. I fancied some good meat and therefore chose a distinguished Argentinian restaurant that I had visited before. The wine list was ok but not the best, so I jogged over to the well-stocked wine shop across the road and bought four really good bottles. It is no problem to bring your own bottles to the pub and pay a corkage fee (30 AUS dollars / bottle). BYO = ‘Bring your own’ is a well used term here. But when I go into Swedish Systembolaget’s website and compare the prices to Sweden, I find to my surprise that some of the wines listed cost less than half the price than in Australia. In Sweden many complain of high alcohol taxes... but there are many places that are far worse. In 1838 the first vines were planted outside Adelaide. This part of Australia still accounts for 60% of the countries’ total production. The somewhat proud producers in the Barossa Valley still do not believe that one can produce highquality wines outside of their district. For Swedes, it is primarily the districts of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Hunter Valley that have made Australia known as a wine country. But towards the mid-1960s a new area started up. Margaret River, south of Perth, Western Australia quickly showed samples of enormous potential, and today it is home to some of Australia’s best wines. The Riesling and Sémillon white wines are becoming increasingly popular though one needs to seek out the slightly cooler districts of Clare Valley, north of the Barossa Valley, around Adelaide Hills or the Yarra Valley east of Melbourne. In Australia, 85 is a key number. The label specifying the grape variety or wine district must include at least 85%,

allowing the winemaker to blend in other grapes or fruit from nearby areas to make up the remaining 15%. Shiraz is arguably the most widely planted grape variety and today it is almost a rule that the green grape viognier is included with its spicy perfumed aroma as a feature of these wines. And it is very seldom that this is printed on the label. In Western Australia, in the districts of Swan Valley and Margaret River, the vintage has a somewhat greater importance than in the rest of Australia and it is here where there are more variations in climate.

The popularity of Australian wine is mainly due to that even after just a couple of years in the bottle, the wines demonstrate a maturity unlike many European wines that need ten years to show their quality. The fruit-driven style seems to suit us northerners and the concentration of the wines is often because the grapes come from very old vines. In Australia, they have a very nice system called ‘Cellar door sales’. This means that all wineries are open to visitors who can try out the range costfree. This is a way to market themselves and if they hear a dialect that is not from the neighbourhood, then you will quickly get a suggestion of where to find their wines when you come home.

DUX

Last year the company celebrated its 90th year, with a new bed collection. DUX are looking to the future with the same philosophy and curiosity that got industrialist Ephraim Ljung abandoning chocolate production in order to focus on producing some of the world’s most comfortable beds.

“I had decided that I definitely would not work in the family business. After I finished my secondary education in Malmö, I set off across the Atlantic just like my great-grandfather, to study interior design in New York”, says Charlotte. “I really wanted to do something totally different and found that interior design was as far from DUX as one could get.” After graduation, she worked with exclusive boutiques in Manhattan. Burberry, Tiffany and other luxury brand stores got a helping hand from Charlotte. But in the end she longed to go home. She was still not ready to work in the family business though, instead starting her own consultancy business. Finally in 2012 she became the new CEO for the Nordic market at a time that was quite turbulent for DUX.   “During the summer of 2012 the Swedish production company in Trelleborg went bankrupt. rom Skåne to Shanghai. From New York to Dubai. In the homes of celebrities, heads of state and luxurious hotels. The Swedish bed manufacturer can be found everywhere. A well-known brand that echoes around the world and that has become synonymous with good sleep quality. If you have a bed from DUX, then you sleep well. In fact it all started with a good night’s sleep. The year was 1924 and factory owner Ephraim Ljung had crossed the Atlantic and checked into his hotel in Chicago. There, he slept very well, and decided to find out how the bed could give him such a comfortable night by simply ripping a small hole in the mattress. Inside the mattress he made a fascinating discovery in the form of spring steel spirals. He returned home, but could not stop thinking about the beautiful night’s sleep he experienced at the hotel. He put his interest in the confectionery business to the side and began instead to experiment with different spring designs. The result was a unique design, developed on their own machines, which today forms the basis of the company’s bed and furniture manufacturing, which started back in 1926. And it is still the Ljung family who run the business legacy, with Ephraim’s great-grandchild, Charlotte Ljung who is managing director of DUX in Scandinavia. But that she and her other brothers would take over the running of the venerable company was far from obvious.

Also made here are other style icons such as Karin, Eva, Pernilla, Super Spider and the Ritzy couch. All are created by skilled trained hands which, stretch canvas, manufacture buttons, sew seat and back cushions or produce headrests. A legacy and a quality that the company is careful to nurture. And there is something special about the handmade, slow process, in a world where everything is mass-produced to be delivered as quickly as possible. “The Jetson armchair is one of our bestsellers and has always been very popular”, says Charlotte. The beds however, have been made at DUX’s own factory in Portugal, since the 1980s. But you can still find Swedish material in them. The material used in the frames comes from the forest in the north of Sweden and the steel in the coils is made with iron ore from Garphyttan.

year after, we moved back some production to Sösdala outside of Hässleholm, in one of the original factory buildings there”, explains Charlotte. “In connection with this, we launched DUX Boutique Factory, with small-scale furniture manufacturing which also involved delving into the archives to re-launch models that had previously been sidelined.” The result was not long in coming, with a dramatic increase during the first year of furniture manufacturing and since then it has continued to go grow. At the factory in Sösdala, which includes the making of mattresses and furniture, one can experience an exciting journey through the DUX history. In addition to furniture and bedding, they have also made a variety of different seating for Volvo, Saab, Sweden’s SJ and Norway’s NSB, and have completed a number of assignments for Silja Line and the Swedish Defence Industry, FMV. Here we can also follow another exciting journey as we see the production of the iconic Jetson armchair, one of furniture designer, Bruno Mathsson’s most famous creations, which after the initial collaboration in the 60s are still being produced by hand here in the factory.

Last year, in connection with its ninetieth anniversary, DUX launched a new bed collection. This was designed by Charlotte, with a little help from the rest of the family, as Charlotte is not only the CEO of DUX, she is also the company’s creative designer. She loves to travel, and the collection’s designs flirt with both the company’s journey and with her own trips. “I like to visit big cities when I am travelling”, says Charlotte. “Where I can get inspired by culture, architecture, art and design. And so I look for a good hotel experience, something I believe I share with many other travellers.” When it comes to just hotels, they have created their own concept – DUXIANA, which so far includes four hotels in Shanghai, Kristianstad, Malmö and Helsingborg, where the latter is actually a Best Western hotel. They asked themselves what was best for the guests and concluded that it must be the bed, so therefore they began a collaboration with DUX. It shares its name with the store concept that began in 1987 and initially was only meant for the Nordic market, but which today consists of a hundred stores in over thirty countries. What about the future? What is on the horizon for the company’s centenery and what happens until then? “We will have developed a new material or a new technology that, if possible, will make our beds even more comfortable, and concept DUXIANA will exist on all continents across the world,” concludes Charlotte.

Which car: Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric? There is a lot of discussion about scrapping our petrol and diesel cars and choosing electric cars instead. And as a stepping stone on the way, we should use hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids. But can we ordinary motorists afford these new engines? Text: Ian Maasing

26 BEST WAY 01.17

Petrol We begin with the petrol engine. Is it ready for the scrapyard? No, absolutely not! It is well proven, reliable, durable and still powered by an energy-rich fuel. It also doesn’t need its fuel tank filled or battery charged every few days. And what is most important for us real people is that it costs relatively little to manufacture, maintain and repair.

Auto Diesel Like the petrol engine, the diesel engine is proven, reliable and sustainable. And it has exemplary fuel economy. But it costs more to produce and to purify the exhaust than a petrol engine. However, along with the petrol engine, the diesel will be the dominant car engine even in the coming 15-20 years.

Hybrid Hybrid driving with a petrol or diesel engine plus an electric motor, in cooperation may, in city traffic, give lower fuel consumption and lower emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide. If the electric motor’s battery is slightly larger it can also be charged with a cable unit, a so-called plug-in system, so you can drive 20-30 kilometres solely on battery power. But two motors and a larger battery pack in a car naturally costs much more than a single engine. So it becomes difficult for us ordinary motorists to fund a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. A full hybrid drive has a powerful electric motor and a large battery pack with high system voltage. It means that the car can run several kilometres with just the electric motor, without any emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases as the combustion engine is switched off. But the big battery pack and the strong electric motor plus all current and voltage converters and electronic controls make the car considerably more expensive than a car with a mild hybrid drive. The effect of the most powerful electric motors can be over 120 kW and a system voltage of up to 600 V.

The fuel savings are between 15 and 30 percent, primarily in urban traffic. The first large series-built car with full hybrid drive is the Toyota Prius, which released its first generation in 1997, second in 2003, third in 2009 and the current fourth generation in 2016. In the next few years full hybrid driving will be introduced in a series of medium sized cars from different manufacturers. But we cannot expect a general breakthrough for full hybrids as the system is so expensive. Plug-in hybrid driving is a full hybrid drive whose battery pack is not only charged by the internal combustion engine generator but also by a connected electric cable charging unit. When you park your car in the evening, then plug the car’s charging unit in to the network, in the same way as one does with an electric heater. The battery kit, which is larger than on a conventional full hybrid, or the extra energy-dense lithium-ion batteries will then be charged with electrical energy so that the car can be driven for around 20-50 km on pure electric. Only when the battery has a little charge remaining does the combustion engine start up. A simplified version of the plug-in hybrid is an electric car with a small petrol or diesel engine driven charging unit, which is turned on when the batteries are discharged. During 2017-18, we expect more mass-produced plug-in hybrids to be launched.

The battery in an electric car (Opel Ampera) is big, heavy and expensive.

01.17 BEST WAY 27

Auto Electric cars If the hybrid vehicle or plug-in hybrid is seen as dear then the electric car is even more expensive! The explanation is simple! All the power that the electric motor needs is stored in a battery that costs thousands of euros. In addition, the battery stores very little energy compared to a tank full of petrol or diesel so you have to stop and recharge the batteries, which can take several hours, after 100 to 250 kilometers of real driving.

Some amazing technology breakthrough that allows the batteries significantly to be cheaper and energy efficient is not to be reckoned with in the near future according to all the scientific literature that highlights the energy supply to the vehicle. It will probably be as several car producers have said recently: No electric cars unless they are subsidised (by us taxpayers!).
