Clev. Co. Fair celebrates 100th anniversary

Strike up the band because the Cleveland County Fair is hitting the century mark of operation this year.

The centennial show will open the gates at its traditional location, 1751 E. Marion St., in Shelby on Thursday, Sept. 26 and will be providing fun, food, agricultural displays, music, and mechanical merriment until closing day on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The first fair was held in 1924, with 70,000 people in attendance. What’s interesting is the population of Cleveland County in 1920 was just around 50,000 folks, proving the fair was drawing fans from the entire region. Attendance last year was 120,000 folks with

Carolina.

The idea for a fair to celebrate Cleveland County’s rich agricultural tradition and to give people a chance to mingle and kick up their heels was hatched in 1923. That’s when the Shelby Kiwanis Club developed a plan to create a county-wide fair combining the Boiling Springs, Fallston, and Union community fairs into one event. Through the sales of $20 shares of stock, $15,000 was raised to establish the Cleveland

To run the fair, organizers named Shelby veterinarian J.S. Dorton manager. Dorton held the post for 38 years. His accomplishments included overseeing construction of the grandstand, racetrack and livestock barn with exhibit halls - all in the short span of six

shared his thoughts on what the fair means to Cleveland County and beyond.

“People from surrounding counties attend this fair every year,” said Jenks. “While here they support local businesses and organizations.

Vendors travel from all over the country to work at this fair. While here they purchase food, supplies, and materials to upgrade equipment.

Recently the athletics department at Cleveland Community College has started charging for parking on the college campus and the money is used to support the

athletic programs at the college. Over the years other organizations like the Cleveland County Cattlemen’s Association have had booths to fundraise as well. Probably, the most important thing is kids competing in showmanship categories. While participating in these events they learn about the animals as well as many life lessons like responsibility and hard work. My granddaughter, Kelsey Beam is very excited to enter her first painting in the participation category in

The demolition derby is a perennially popular Cleveland County Fair activity.
Kids of all ages will enjoy the wide variety of rides at this year’s Fair.

canine parvovirus

Dog owners routinely go to great lengths to ensure man’s best friend is well taken care of. That readiness to do whatever it takes to make dogs happy is a testament to how much joy dogs bring to their owners’ lives.

Many dogs may go their entire lives without a notable illness, but when a condition arises, owners take action quickly. That quickness can make the difference between life and death, but education about prevention is equally important. Such is the case with canine parvovirus, a potentially deadly virus that all dog owners should become familiar with.

What is canine parvovirus?

The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that affects the gastrointestinal tracts of dogs.

How is canine parvovirus spread?

Often referred to as “parvo,” CPV is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated feces, environments or people. The AVMA® reports that CPV can be transmitted from place to place on the hair or feet of dogs or through contact with contaminated objects, such as cages and shoes.

What signs indicate a dog might have canine parvovirus?

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University notes that various symptoms are indicative of the presence of CPV. Such symptoms include:

• Lethargy

• Depression

• Loss or lack of appetite

As CPV progresses, the symptoms noted above may be followed by the sudden onset of a high fever, vomiting and diarrhea. The College of Veterinary Medicine notes that bloody diarrhea and/or vomiting could be indicative of a number of conditions, including CPV. The presence of any of these symptoms should be reported to a veterinarian immediately. Can CPV be prevented?

The College of Veterinary Medicine strongly urges all pet owners to have their dogs vaccinated

against CPV. Such vaccinations have helped to dramatically reduce instances of CPV, though that does not mean the virus does not still pose a threat to unvaccinated dogs, particularly puppies. In fact, the AVMA notes that puppies are highly susceptible to CPV infection because the natural immunity in their mothers’ milk may wear off before the dogs’ immune systems have matured enough to sufficiently combat infection. Puppies can become ill during the period when the immunity from mothers’ milk has waned and they have yet to be vaccinated. Even vaccinated puppies can become ill if the immunity from mothers’ milk has not worn off, as the AVMA suggests this might be because the immunity provided by the mothers’ milk is interfering with the dog’s response to vaccination. That does not mean puppy owners should delay vaccination. In fact,

the AVMA urges puppy owners whose dogs have already been vaccinated against CPV to arrange for their animals to receive a second dose between 14 and 16 weeks of age. That second dose ensures adequate protection against CPV and serves as a safeguard just in case the immunity from mothers’ milk interfered with the initial dose of vaccine.

Open dialogue with a veterinarian can help pet owners protect dogs against CPV as the dog ages. This is an essential component of CPV prevention, which also should entail prompt and proper disposal of waste to reduce the risk that dogs are contaminated with the virus.

Vaccination can help prevent infection with CPV, but pet owners should remain vigilant throughout their dogs’ lives to safeguard them against this potentially deadly virus.

FAIR

From Page 1

The anticipation and excitement are unmatched.

The fair is a 100-year tradition where family and friends gather to eat, ride, view the animals, exhibits, attractions, and enjoy entertainment. Cleveland County is fortunate to have an event of this caliber, and many people have sacrificed to get the fair to the 100-year mark.”

It takes a dedicated crew, many of whom work yearround, to put on the fair.

According to Jenks, about 200 folks are fair employees. Fair office workers Mot Davis and Savannah Pothier shared their thoughts on the event.

“I’ve been coming to the fair since childhood,” Davis said. “It’s a great event.”

Pothier is amazed the fair has been around so long.

“It’s interesting and crazy that it’s been that long," she said.

Jenks’ daughter and fair board member Angela Beam knows putting it on every year ‘takes a village’.

“It is a pleasure to serve on the Cleveland County Fair Board,” she said. “I appreciate the numerous people involved in making this event successful in order to continue the tradition of the largest county fair in NC. It would not be possible without all our stakeholders and sponsors.”

The fairgrounds have been spruced up for the event.

“We’ve built new bathrooms and remodeled existing bathrooms,” said Jenks. “We also have a new fire department, sealcoated the asphalt on the grounds, installed new fencing around the fairgrounds, and painted multiple buildings. Last year lighting and water lines were upgraded.”

So, what can people expect to experience and enjoy at the event? A wide variety of food for one thing. The tantalizing aromas waft over the fairgrounds beckoning hungry fairgoers. The fair is known for its traditional foods like turkey legs, barbecue, funnel cakes, vinegar fries, ham biscuits and cotton candy, as well as new foods like giant pork chops on a stick and deep-fried candy bars.

Ready for rides and games of skill? The fair

will have over 50 rides and booths. Reithoffer Shows will be providing the amusements again this year. Mild to wild, the rides are better than ever, and the huge Ferris wheel is always a hit. Other things to see at the fair include mechanized amusement like the demolition derby, dirt bikes, and tractor pulls.

Of course, agriculture is a big part of the fair with

over 75 exhibitors. Folks from far and wide bring their sheep, goats, cows, chickens, turkeys, horses, and other livestock to see and be seen. School groups, churches, civic organizations, and other entities proudly display science projects, crafts, art, plants, home grown vegetables, canned foods, cakes, pies etc. etc. in a stunning variety of exhibits. There will also be plenty

of toe-tapping music shows in a variety of styles and genres.

Overall, this year’s Cleveland County Fair looks to be not only bigger and better than ever but anticipating a bright future over the next 100 years.

Jenks looks at the fair’s legacy this way

“What is the future of the fair?” he said. “The county is supportive, and we are

appreciative of their help getting the facilities upgraded. I think the Cleveland County Fair will continue its success well into the future. Hopefully future generations will find this fair even more prosperous.”

Changes in Effect for 2024–25 Deer Hunting Season in Western NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (September 16, 2024) - New rules adopted by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) have shifted the timing of the western zone black-powder and gun seasons, and increased antlerless hunting opportunities in many western zone counties.

The new black-powder season will begin on Saturday, November 16, and end Friday, November 29. Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 28 and 29, 2024) are designated as Youth Days in the western zone. Youth under 18 may use a gun to harvest antlered or antlerless deer during those two days of the black-powder season. Gun season will begin on Saturday, November 30 and end on January 1, 2025.

These changes were adopted by NCWRC to better align the western zone deer seasons with important deer management objectives, including protecting yearling buck dispersal, deer harvest relative to timing of the rut, balancing the buck-to-doe sex ratio, and improving synchrony between breeding and fawning periods, which is an important deer life-history trait that ensures fawns are born at the optimal time of year relative to food and cover resources. Additionally, due to the growth of deer herds across most of the western zone, particularly on private lands, these changes provide hunters with additional opportunity to harvest antlerless deer.

Detailed information may be reviewed here explaining how these changes are intended to better manage the growing deer herds in the western zone.

View pages 62-66 in NCWRC’s 2024-25 Regulations Digest for specific information about these season changes on private lands, including information on antlerless seasons by county across the western zone.

Spiritual Growth

(Part 2 of “Embracing Transition” Series)

Life is full of transitions—some expected, some surprising—and each one offers us an opportunity for spiritual maturity and faith. When we experience a significant transition, we often find ourselves facing uncertainties. Yet, it is precisely in these moments of transformation that we can witness God’s handiwork in our lives. Each new experience shapes us and molds us into the people He desires us to be. Romans 12:2(NIV) reminds us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” This verse encourages us to embrace change as a chance to expand our understanding and align ourselves more closely with God’s will.

To The Promised Land

Consider the story of the Israelites in Exodus. When they were freed from slavery in Egypt, they faced the daunting task of transitioning into a new life in the Promised Land. Along the way, they encountered challenges, doubts, and fears. Yet, God was with them. He provided manna for food, guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, and eventually led them to a land flowing with milk and honey. Through these experiences, the Israelites transformed—from a people enslaved to a nation of faith-led individuals ready to inherit God’s promises. Like the Israelites, when we encounter transitions, it’s essential to shift our perspective. Instead of viewing our transitions with fear or uncertainty, we should approach them with an attitude of prayer, grateful for the opportunities ahead. By doing so, we open our hearts and minds to the

possibilities that God has in store for us.

Life’s transitions, while often accompanied by struggles and unforeseen difficulties, are integral to our spiritual growth and personal development. When we encounter trials, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or disheartened; however, it is essential to shift our perspective and recognize that these very challenges serve a purpose. God uses these moments not only to test our faith but also to refine us, so that we can be more Christlike.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT) states, “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord— who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, I love to praise your holy name. You alone are worthy of my praise. Thank you for making and

GET SEWING WORD SEARCH

molding me so that I live a life that will please you. As I navigate these transitions in my life, I ask that you would lead me and help me to do what you want me to do. Calm my emotions and fill me with your peace. May everyone who encounters me, see you. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

It finally happened. After 30 years of climbing trees, my tree stand collapsed right under my feet. Let me go ahead and say, thank God for my lifeline and my safety harness. Both worked to perfection. I only dropped about 3 feet and was able to get back on my ladder and retrieve my equipment. Here’s a little more detail. I bought this hang-on stand approximately 6 or 7 years ago. It was a larger one made by a popular company. The foot deck was attached to the seat by 2 steel cables. It was very comfortable. For the last 2 years I left it attached to the tree, even though I would loosen all the straps at the end of the year to allow for tree growth. At the beginning of each year, I went back and checked or replaced straps, and then tightened them back to make everything snug. I always attach several additional rachet straps to the stand for added safety. This year was no different. But I never imagined I would need to check the steel cables, especially when the stand was less than 10 years old. Now before you send me bad emails, I understand that first of all, I should take the stand down each year, and secondly, I need to check the cables as well, and thirdly, I probably need to replace the stand after 6 or 7 years. But back to my story. I had already hunted in this stand one previous time this year with no issues. I sensed nothing different this time. It was an evening hunt, so I was able to see everything in good daylight. I tied my bow to a pull cord, attached my harness to my lifeline, and climbed up the tree. I pulled my bow up, hung it on its hanger, and then hung a small pair of rattling antlers on the other side of the tree. I sat down, and then it happened. The platform gave way and I dropped. It happened so quickly; I had no time to even think about what was happening. It was over in less than a second. When I realized what happened, I immediately said, “Thank you Lord.” I knew a possible tragedy had been averted. This was a first for me and I am still thinking about 2 thoughts I have landed on (pardon the pun) from this event. First of all, I once thought that maybe individuals who were meeting sudden death had a few seconds to think before the event actually happened. I am now convinced death can happen before a thought can come into your mind. My accident happened so fast; my heart didn’t even have time to race. I was as calm while I was hanging as I was seconds before my fall. The second belief I am convinced of is a truth that I have read about in the Bible. It’s that, for a Christian, the time between death and being in the presence of God will not even be noticed. Oh, there is one more thought I keep having. Because of these things, let’s all make sure we are ready to meet God if our harness doesn’t hold. Stay safe out there.
