Mack’s Livermush is a

County culinary and community icon

The 40th anniversary of the Cleveland County Mush, Music, & Mutts Festival is set for Oct. 18th and one of the event’s founders, Mack’s Livermush, will be on hand just as it has since the celebration began back in 1985.

Yes, it was four decades ago that Mack’s owner at the time, Bill McKee, and some other folks decided to perk up downtown Shelby by setting up sidewalk sales, playing some music, and giving out samples of livermush on crackers. From that humble beginning, the festival, and Mack’s, have both blossomed.

Bill’s son Ron runs Mack’s these days and talked about how the company grew from the red clay of the Newhouse community northwest of Shelby to where it is today and how the festival grew with it.

“My grandfather Ray McKee started making livermush on his farm just up the road at the old home place,” Ron said. “It was during the Depression

and people didn’t waste anything. The first plant had a dirt floor and the livermush was stirred in tubs with wooden paddles as it cooked. After it was made into cakes it was put in wooden boxes for sale.”

country stores,” said Ron. “There was no refrigeration but livermush is already cooked and has low moisture content so it would not spoil.”

Ron’s cousin, Gary Wellmon, made this remark“Uncle Ray wrote the book on livermush.”

Ron’s dad, Bill, stepped up as the second generation of the McKee clan to make livermush. He not only kept things going at the plant on McKee Rd., but with his wife Carolyn

also drove a route truck delivering the product to stores in places like Casar and Polkville. Bill drove up until just before his passing in July, 1998.

Making and delivering livermush was just part of Bill’s involvement with the delicacy that has been referred to as “Piedmont pate’ after the European rustic delicacy.

highly popular, and each year attracted a larger crowd.

The month of October was given the nod as a good time to have such an event.

Ron recalled the first festival: “We had sidewalk sales, school cheerleaders, music, and our little booth which was the only food vendor,” he said.

“We cooked livermush in an electric skillet and gave out little slices on crackers.”

The event proved to be

“He wanted to show as many different types of people how good livermush is,” said Ron. “In 1985 he talked to leaders in Shelby about having an event that would attract people to the downtown area because it was losing business to shopping malls. They came up with the idea of a festival where businesses there could attract people.”

“We went from samples that first year to the next year giving out 300 livermush biscuits,” he said. “It kept getting bigger and bigger and in 2023 we gave out 6,000 sandwiches in eight hours. Over the years we went from using four skillets to eight deep friers cooking all day long.”

Butterfly

I have always been captivated by the incredible transformation of a butterfly. From a tiny, grounded caterpillar, it undergoes a profound metamorphosis, shedding its old self, gaining new wings, and soaring into the sky. This beautiful process reminds me of what God desires for each of us: to be continually renewed, to walk in a different direction through repentance, and to grow into the full measure of our character. The Apostle Paul states in 2 Corinthians 3:18 (AMP): “ And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.”

DANYALE PATTERSON

lieve things that harm us and contradict God’s plans. However, God wants to shape us into people filled with his love, joy and peace. He wants us to live extraordinary lives through him. Galatians 2:20 (NLT) says, “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

from spiritual death into abundant life, peace and joy.

Let’s Pray:

“Father God, I praise you for excellent greatness. You alone are worthy of my adoration. Forgive me for wanting to stay in my comfort zone, instead of pursuing your ways and your will for me. Help me to embrace the changes that you want in my life. I surrender to your will and your well. I know that you love me and want what’s best for me. I love you too. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

Wrestling with Transformation

ZERO TURN MOWERS

Change is difficult - let’s be honest. We love what makes us feel comfortable, but sometimes our comfort zones prevent us from becoming, doing and having all that God desires for us. Our resistance to change can lead us in trouble, causing us to say, do, and be-

The Supernatural Book God calls us to transformation, and what better way to participate in this process than by spending intentional time in the Word - the supernatural book? Through his truth, we are reshaped, strengthened, and empowered to become who he created us to be, free to soar. Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Scripture is supernatural not only because of its unified themes, prophetic accuracy, and historical and scientific reliability - all evidence of divine authorship - but because it speaks directly into your soul, transforming you

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Mack’s retail and wholesale customer base is a big job.

“We supply at least 100 stores in a range extending from Hendersonville to South Charlotte to Spartanburg,” said Ron.

The plant is located at 6126 McKee Rd. off Newhouse Rd. in a tidy building and employs 14 folks. Inside the plant, the livermush ingredients are blended, cooked thoroughly in large stain-

less-steel kettles, then put in molds, chilled, and packaged. Boxes awaiting shipment are kept in a large walk-in refrigerator that’s cold as whizz. The company has a fleet of three refrigerated trucks.

“We make 50 to 80 thousand pounds of product a month,” Ron says.

The production is well-monitored by both the NCDA and the USDA.

“The inspectors are here every day,” said Ron. “They have their own office space in the building.”

In addition, Ron has

a large computer monitor near his desk that’s connected to cameras watching over every step of the process in real-time.

Well, if you ever wondered how livermush is made, now you know.

This year’s Mush, Music, & Mutts Festival is shaping up to be even bigger and better than before. Look for another article in a few weeks detailing what will be on tap for entertainment, activities, and food, including the star of the show….livermush.

Historic Howser House is open on Saturday

Kings Mountain National Military Park has announced that the Howser House will be open to visitors on Saturday, September 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The event features guided and self-guided tours, early 19th-century games, craft demonstrations, and a special exhibit.

This 1803 stone house, located in a remote area of the park, is only open to the public once or twice a year, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

The stone house was built by a Revolutionary War veteran and stonemason, Henry Howser, and a slave stonemason, Jane Howser. Its thick, sturdy, stone walls conveyed prosperity and affluence at a time when most were living in log houses.

The home remained in the family for several generations and was one of the more prosperous farms in the region.

Kings Mountain National Military Park and other volunteers will have the house and grounds open to the public. Visitors are welcome to explore the house and appreciate Howser’s architectural talents.

The Howser House is not handicapped accessible, and parking is limited. Visitors may reach the house from Rock House Road, off SC 216 (Battleground Road). Parking is available. Good walking shoes are recommended. The event is free and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. For more information about this event, call 864-936-7921.

BLUEBERRY TURNOVERS

2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries, divided

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tsp. grated lemon zest

2 tablespoons butter

1 package frozen puff pastry, thawed

1 large egg

1 tablespoon water

1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 tablespoon milk

• Preheat oven to 450°. In a large saucepan, combine 1/2 cup blueberries, sugar, cornstarch and lemon zest. Mash well with a fork. Bring mixture to a boil over low heat; cook and stir until thickened, 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in butter and remaining 1-1/2 cups blueberries.

• Unfold puff pastry. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each pastry sheet into a 12-in. square. Cut each into 4 squares; spoon 3 tablespoons filling into

center of each. Fold diagonally in half and press edges to seal. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Beat egg and water; brush over pastry.

• Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Combine confectioners’ sugar and milk; drizzle over turnovers. Serve warm or at room temperature.

lemon zest.

• Transfer to a greased 8x4in. loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

Warning signs for heart disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, men and people of most ethnic and racial groups, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One person dies from heart disease every 33 seconds. Understanding the risk factors for heart disease is the first step toward prevention and management.

There are many things people can do to modify their risk for heart disease, but also some that cannot be changed. Ultimately, education is essential either way, and learning the risk factors for heart disease is vital to such education.

• Age: The risk for heart disease increases with age. For men the risk rises after age 45, and for women, it increases after menopause, or around age 55. Aging naturally leads to changes in the heart and blood vessels that increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems, says the National Institute on Aging.

• Sex: Initially men are at a higher risk of developing heart disease. However,

over time a woman’s risk after menopause tends to equal that of a man’s. As estrogen levels decline after menopause, fat can build up in the arteries, causing them to narrow, says the British Heart Foundation. After menopause, body weight may increase, which also is a risk factor for heart disease.

• Family history: Those with a close relative who developed heart disease at an early age may be at elevated risk.

• Race: UChicago Medicine says Black and Hispanic people have an elevated risk of dying from heart disease compared to white individuals.

People may be able to change the following controllable risk factors for heart disease.

• Hypertension: Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, forces the heart to work harder and can stiffen the arteries. This can damage blood vessels over time. Medications and additional lifestyle changes can help seniors combat hypertension.

• Smoking: Smoking to-

bacco can damage blood vessels and reduce oxygen in the blood. Smoking also increases the risk of blood clots. Johns Hopkins Medicine says cigarette smokers are two to four times more likely to get heart disease than nonsmokers.

• Cholesterol: High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), known as “bad” cholesterol, contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. This can narrow arteries and restrict blood flow.

• Sedentary lifestyle: A lack of physical activity is a risk factor for obesity, high blood pressure and

high cholesterol, each of which increases a person’s chances of being diagnosed with heart disease.

• Dental health: Poor dental health can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, which can potentially lead to inflammation that affects heart health.

By understanding risk factors and actively making changes to behaviors that can be modified, people can take strides toward protecting heart health and avoiding cardiovascular disease.

Aiming

are quickly coming to everyone’s favorite time of year. The signs of summer’s close are the start of school, Labor Day, and another hunting season. Autumn in most states brings cool mornings and warm evenings. It’s the days that country folks enjoy the screen door and open windows. The air seems cleaner and fresher, and the once hazy skies are now as clear as a mountain stream. The most prominent signs of fall are the leaves that are changing from hues of green into colors as different as the trees themselves. My part of the country is known for the beautiful fall colors that cover the mountains like Joseph’s coat of many colors. During the summer months, from a distance, every tree looks the same. The hills seem covered with one big blob of green. And while the evergreens may stand out from their needles, the rest of the landscape is uniform. Each tree has thrived under the good conditions of spring and summer. When the pressure of fall comes each tree begins to show its own unique colors. Fall is not the time of plenty; it is the time of lack. This lack is what causes the leaves to turn. We might say that when each tree is under the pressure of a lack of sustenance it begins to show its true colors. The same can be said about us. Many times in our life, we are forced under some pressure. One of the most common pressures is the one that comes from a perceived lack of what we need. As with any pressure we are squeezed to the point that what is inside comes out. We show our true colors. Now this doesn’t mean that one bad moment is the determining factor of who we really are. But pressure that is put on us over time will reveal what we are made of. What we need to understand is that many times it is God who is applying the pressure to us. He is not doing it so He can find out what we will do – He already knows; but He is doing it so we can know and so that we can see what is truly in our heart and if we really trust in God who has promised to provide everything we need. Thankfully, these difficult times are only seasons. Although they seem permanent at times, one day they will give way to another time of growth and prosperity. And I pray that while autumn is in the air, your summer of blessings is just arriving.
