Coming Home: Earl Scruggs Center restores the Homeplace of a music legend
Just outside Boiling Springs, near the Broad River, sits a weathered farmhouse that once rang with the sound of a young Earl Scruggs’ banjo. It was here that Scruggs grew up, worked with his family, and perfected the innovative three-finger picking style that changed American music forever.
Now, the Earl Scruggs Center has purchased and begun restoring this special place—known simply as the Earl Scruggs Homeplace.
“This farmhouse tells the story of Earl’s beginnings,” said Mary Beth Martin, Executive Director of the Earl Scruggs Center. “It was here that he experienced his famous ‘I Got It’ moment and developed the style that carried his name and Cleveland County’s story around the world. Preserving the Homeplace lets us share that history in a way that words alone cannot.”
Scruggs lived in the house from 1933 to 1942 with his mother and siblings. Like many Cleveland County families of the era, they farmed the land to make ends meet. After high school, Earl took a job at Lily Mills in Shelby before leaving in 1945 to pursue music full-time—a decision that forever linked his name with American roots music.
The purchase of the Homeplace was finalized in July 2024 with support from the North Carolina General Assembly, championed by Cleveland County’s legislative delegation in the Senate and House. In November, Preservation North Carolina placed permanent covenants on the property, ensuring its protection for generations.
The restoration is being guided by Scruggs’ own memories and the community that shaped him. Earl’s descendants donated a handwritten notebook of recollections, which will help ensure authenticity. A team of Earl Scruggs Center board members and volunteers are also playing a key
role. Local Eagle Scout Joshua Melton led his troop in clearing the property and salvaging materials for reuse, preparing the site for restoration.
Since opening in 2014 in the heart of Shelby, the Earl Scruggs Center has welcomed visitors from around the world eager to learn more about Scruggs’ life and the region’s musical heritage. With the addition of the Homeplace, the Center will offer an even deeper connection to Earl’s story.
“This is more than just restoring a building—it’s about honoring Earl’s roots and the community that shaped him,” Martin said. “When people walk
through those doors, they’ll feel the connection between Cleveland County and the music that continues to inspire the world.”
For now, the farmhouse remains an active restoration site, but the Earl Scruggs Center looks forward to the day when visitors can step inside and experience the place “where it all started.”

Enjoy a safe and fun Labor Day
Residents of the United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day or Labour Day each September on the first Monday of the month to acknowledge the contributions of each nation’s workers. The holiday can be traced to the late nineteenth century, when labor activists campaigned for a federal holiday to recognize hardworking employees and their accomplishments.
begins, so roadways tend to be congested.
Although the holiday originally was crafted by the labor movement, not much labor occurs on Labor Day each year. Rather, Labor Day is a time when most workers enjoy a well-deserved day off, and various recreational events take place. Individuals can explore these tips to enjoy a memorable, fun and safe Labor Day.
Grilling time
Grilling is a centerpiece of many Labor Day celebrations. Although guests may look forward to familiar fare, such as burgers and hot dogs, introducing some interesting menu items into the mix can elevate the event even further. Explore options with seafood and vegetables or even experiment with different flavor profiles. Replace chicken with shrimp on kabobs or swap beef for lamb in burgers for even more variety.
When grilling, always emphasize safety. Never leave the grill unattended, and ensure that the grill is located away from the main action and far enough from the house so that nothing will catch fire.
Factor in traffic
Traffic is a common complaint during the summer, but especially during holiday weekends. AAA booking data showed overall domestic travel over Labor Day weekend 2024 was up 9 percent compared to the year prior. In many locations, Labor Day is the last hurrah before school
The transportation data experts at INRIX recommend car travelers avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday and Friday, as those times tend to be the busiest. Leaving early on Thursday or Friday or departing on Saturday afternoon will help travelers avoid most traffic and begin their weekends less stressed. Plus, drivers are less likely to drive aggressively when they build in a time buffer.
Head to the water
Water sports, boating, swimming, and other water-based activities are entertaining ideas for Labor Day. Life jackets are essential on boats and other watercraft, and inexperienced swimmers may want to wear them as well. Everyone should avoid alcohol consumption while boating or swimming. Try to stick to areas that have lifeguards on duty.
Firework smarts
Fireworks can cap off a summer of fun. Instead of lighting fireworks at home, head to an event organized by pyrotechnics experts for the safest situation. Pets can become skittish during loud noises associated with fireworks, so keep them indoors in a quiet room where they can remain calm and are less likely to run away and get lost outdoors.
Labor Day tends to be summer’s curtain call. Make the most of it this year, but remember to always play it safe.

Stephanie Pasour assumes role as new
president of Clev. County Arts Council
The Cleveland County Arts Council is proud to announce Stephanie Pasour as their new president.
Stephanie brings with her a rich background in education and the arts, holding a B.A. in Music from Appalachian State University, along with K–6 and middle grades certification from Winthrop University. Stephanie has dedicated over 30 years to music instruction in Cleveland County Schools, teaching in numerous elementary and middle schools.
She joined the Arts Council in January 2024 as Special Projects Coordinator, where she quickly developed a deep appreciation for the organization’s mission of enriching lives through the arts. In this role, she coordinated programs, installed exhibits, planned events, and helped facilitate a variety of cultural initiatives.
On August 4, Stepha-
nie officially stepped into her new role as president. This transition allows her to work alongside retiring president Shearra Miller, gaining valuable insight and guidance as she moves from programming to organizational leadership.
“I’m honored to take on this new role and build upon the incredible work of Shearra and the Arts Council team,” said Pasour. “I’m excited to continue the council’s tradition of offering vibrant programs and exhibits,
while also exploring new ways to connect our community through the arts.”
Stephanie and her husband Tony live on a family farm in Bessemer City, just over the county line, but she proudly calls Cleveland County home. They have three daughters, all graduates of Kings Mountain High School, who were active in local sports and the school band. Stephanie herself was a member of the band in high school and continued her passion for music at ASU as a bassoonist, participating in marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, orchestra, App Chorale, and several small ensembles.
In her free time, Stephanie enjoys exploring new creative skills, reading, traveling, and spending quality time with her family.
With her deep roots in the community and a lifetime commitment to
the arts, Stephanie is uniquely positioned to understand and serve the needs of Cleveland County. She is eager to uphold the strong traditions of the CCAC while introducing new programs and exhibits that reflect the evolving needs of our community.
“Stephanie brings energy, experience, and a deep love for our community,” said outgoing president Shearra Miller. “Stephanie has a clear vision for the future of the Arts Council, and I have every confidence in her ability to guide the organization forward. It’s been an honor to work alongside her during this transition.”

Alarms
(4th & Final Part of “BACK TO SCHOOL” Series)
In our schools today, alarms play a crucial role in keeping students and staff safe. These alarms alert everyone to potential dangers. Typically, these include fire alarms, intruder alarms, and emergency notification systems. So why should we pay attention to these alarms? The answer is simple: alarms are signals that something needs our immediate awareness and action. Ignoring them could lead to danger or harm. When an alarm sounds, it is a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. Teachers, students, and staff must stay alert and respond quickly. This sense of attentiveness can help prevent injuries
and save lives. The Bible often speaks about being alert and prepared. For example, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus encourages his followers to be watchful. In Matthew 24:42 (AMP), Jesus says, “So be alert [give strict attention, be cautious and active in faith], for you do not know which day [whether near or far] your Lord is coming.”
IS IT A DRILL?
Sometimes, students and teachers don’t take the alarms seriously because they think it’s just another drill. Similarly, people have been hearing for thousands of years that Jesus is coming back, so they become complacent, but I believe that we are closer than we have ever been because many of the bible prophecies are fulfilling themselves, especially about Israel. However, our job is not to guess when it will happen, but to live each day like it might happen at any moment. 2 Peter 3:10
(AMP) says, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will vanish with a [mighty and thunderous] roar, and the [material] elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and the works that are on it will be burned up.”
BE READY
In 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (AMP), Paul writes, “So then let us not sleep [in spiritual indifference] as the rest [of the world does], but let us keep wide awake [alert and cautious] and let us be sober [self-controlled, calm, and wise].” This verse emphasizes the importance of staying awake and aware of what is happening around us. In these last and evil days, the signs and warnings of the time require our active attention and quick response to what God is telling us to do.
Let’s Pray:
“Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness
you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago. Forgive me for not living with a sense of urgency of your return. Help me to be aware of any warnings that you are giving me. I love you. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
A faculty member with 26 years of experience at Gardner-Webb is the 2025 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award presented at the Fall Faculty Assembly. Dr. Paula Qualls, professor of religious studies, was honored for engaging her students not only in the classroom but also in their daily lives—guiding them through difficult material while creating space for reflection, growth, and personal connection.
Qualls is a second-time winner of the award, having received the honor in 2008. One of the highest bestowed upon a faculty member, the accolade recognizes academic rigor, excellence in course design, a profound dedication to students, and a commitment to living out the University’s mission.
Qualls and her husband Rev. Greg Qualls attend New Bethel Baptist Church in Rutherford County where he is the pastor. The couple has three grown children, the youngest is a student at Gardner-Webb. The couple lives in Mooresboro.
To be eligible, the faculty member must have completed at least five years of full-time teaching service at GWU, be nominated by a peer, and receive a formal recommendation from their department chair. Faculty and students are given the opportunity to score and leave comments and feedback to make the ultimate determination for the award. The award is presented with a $1,000 cash prize and the invitation to speak at fall convocation.
Qualls’ course portfolio spans every academic level—introductory general education classes, upper-level courses for majors and non-majors alike, and graduate-level seminars. Year after year, her department receives an overwhelming number of glowing comments from students who describe her with words like “love,” “compassion,” “encouraging,” and “positivity.”
Students shared: • “She was a great teacher and mentor during our University 111 class. She possesses a unique blend of knowledge, compassion, and the ability to inspire us to be better. Her classes weren’t just about learning—they challenged us to take everything to a personal level. I also view her as a mentor in my life. She takes the time to truly know each student. The impact she’s had has been profound.”
• “My fellow classmates and I agree—we have been transformed and deepened in our faith through her guidance and support. She is relatable and fosters a loving environment where we can learn and build community with one another.”
Dr. Paula Qualls developed and piloted Gardner-Webb’s first Faith Living-Learning Community—a transformative initiative that earned her the First-Year Experience Instructor of the Year Award for 2024.
Her colleagues consistently highlight her excellence in course organization, clarity of instruction, and innovative teaching design. They describe her as someone who not only masters her subject matter but also connects deeply with every student she teaches.
Colleagues have said:• “She reflects deeply on pedagogy— following the latest scholarship on teaching and learning and regularly incorporating new ideas into her classes.”
• “Her strength as a teacher comes from the passion she has for her students and her remarkable ability to connect with them on a personal level.”
This past year, she developed and piloted Gardner-Webb’s first Faith Living-Learning Community—a transformative initiative that earned her the First-Year Experience Instructor of the Year Award for 2024.
She also represented Gardner-Webb at Elon University’s 20th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference. Sharing her methods with educators from across the region, Qualls presented “Teaching Outside the Box: Exploring Innovative Techniques.” Qualls received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and her MDiv and PhD from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She joined the GWU faculty in 1999. Before that, she taught for two years at Campbellsville University in Kentucky and as an adjunct with Simmons Bible College in Louisville.

TERRY LEE LARSON
Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman Offers Labor Day Travel Safety Tips for the Community
With the approach of the Labor Day holiday weekend, Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman asks all citizens to make this Labor Day holiday a happy and enjoyable time for all by following some simple safety tips.
Labor Day often brings increased road travel which can cause significant delays and dangerous conditions. Sheriff Norman reminds the community to stay vigilant and alert at all times when on the road, and follow these simple tips:
• Before you hit the road, double check that all car seats and booster seats are properly installed and secure in the vehicle.
• Buckle up every time you are in a vehicle. It’s the law! All passengers must be wearing a seat belt at all times.
• Always shift your attention every few seconds, constantly scanning the road ahead and behind you. Never blankly stare ahead or fix your gaze on one point on the road. Conditions can change in the blink of an eye.
• Always signal your intentions with your brake lights, turn signals, horn and/or headlights so that other drivers will see you well before you change course.
• Obey posted speed limits at all times. Speeding endangers you and other drivers!
• Check the weather forecast before you leave. The late summer months can bring heavy rain and strong winds, so be prepared for these types of conditions on the road.
• Never follow another vehicle too closely. Remember that as your speed increases, you will need extra time to bring your vehicle to a stop.
• Never drive drowsy. On long trips, be sure to take frequent breaks or switch drivers when you get tired.
“Most of all, don’t forget to always be courteous to other drivers.” Sheriff Norman added, “Congested roads and traffic can make tensions run high and result in road rage incidents. Don’t let your holiday road trip escalate to violence. Safer roads in Cleveland County start with you!”

By Gary Miller
I’ve been riding a bicycle for about ten years now. It has been an enjoyable exercise that has allowed me to see new areas and to see old areas from a different perspective. Like any exercise, you have to mix up the routine to keep from being bored. For the past three months, my rides have almost exclusively been at my national park. The rides are short but difficult. I ride to the top of the Pinnacle Outlook and back down. The whole trip is only seven miles. But the 3.5 miles to the top covers 1300 feet of elevation. To give you a little perspective, I noticed on a recent trip that on the way back down, I coasted for 2.25 miles. That’s the fun part. The hard part is on the way up. It’s also the most enjoyable and beneficial. Since I do this at daybreak, I’ve seen all kinds of animals including bears. And because I’m on Park property, the deer are nearly tame. (I say “Good Morning” to them as I ride by) The main reason I decided this route was because I wouldn’t have to be concerned about any traffic, and therefore my mind could focus on the things I preferred. Mainly an early morning dose of the Bible. There is one black preacher I’ve been listening to each time I make the climb. And boy has he been informative and entertaining. I have loved listening to him. But here’s what I have noticed. It’s been how clear God has given me answers to many of my prayers. His words to me have been so clear when it comes to certain things. It’s like the blend of His creation and His word, have pierced through my solitude and simplicity. Even the distractions are God-made. I have honed my listening, and my directions and decisions have become clearer.
I’m reminded of the days of my childhood, riding in the car with my father. If the weather was bad, he would always tell us kids to be quiet while he was driving. It seemed that what he heard affected what he saw. I always thought that was odd until I began to do the same thing. Even now, if I’m driving in bad weather, I move my seat up, lean in toward the windshield, and turn the music off. Evidently, what I hear determines what I see. As I ride my bike, I understand it even more. What I have learned is this. If am to get God’s perspective on my day, my difficulties, and my decisions, I must intentionally move myself to a place where He can most easily penetrate my spirit. And I must monitor what goes into my mind. For me, the perfect blend of His creation and His word, mixed with my willingness to climb with Him, has made the rest of the hours in my day feel like I’m coasting.
