Shelby to host 40th anniversary

NC Livermush Festival October

Fire up your taste buds and your fun buds because one of our region’s premiere events, the NC Livermush Festival, will be coming to the Courthouse Square in downtown Shelby on Saturday, October 18 from 9am to 4pm.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the event, which is more officially known as the Mush, Music & Mutts Festival. The food and fun started back in 1985 when Bill McKee of Mack’s Livermush, and local business owners, teamed up to create a festival designed to draw folks to uptown Shelby.

The first gathering saw McKee hand out livermush

samples on soda crackers, bands play, and shopkeepers hold sidewalk sales. From that humble beginning, the festival has blossomed into Shelby’s largest one-day special event. Another kudo? In 2012, the General Assembly designated the Shelby Livermush Festival as the official fall livermush festival of North Carolina.

Karyn Owens-Patton is the Cleveland County marketing and communications director. She’s excited about this year’s 40th anniversary event.

“The festival is a celebration of our local heritage, especially our livermush and folk music heritage,” she said. “This year we expect the streets around the courtsquare to be packed with people enjoying great food, music, activities for children, dog shows, and more. It is all free and a way for the whole family to have a great time.”

This year’s day will feature over 130 vendorsincluding over 30 offering food and beverage.

Dogs will have their day at the festival.

“There will be a pet festival with paw painting, live dog shows, a dog costume contest, and more,” Owens-Patton said. “Last year we had between two hundred and three hundred dogs take part in the fun,”

Kids will have plenty to do. There will be a Land of Rhythm Kid Zone, pumpkin painting, Ross the Balloon Guy, the Dover Foundation YMCA Fun Zone, and the talented Poetry Fox typing out custom ditties.

Music has always been a big part of the festival and for See LIVERMUSH, Page 6

2025 it will be bigger and better than ever.

“There will be ten bands performing across three stages,” said Owens-Patton.

“That includes the Main Stage by Albemarle, the Carolina Harmony Trail Stage sponsored by the City of Shelby and Sofidel, and new for this year, Mack’s Back Porch Side Stage. The Carolina Harmony Trail Stage and Mack’s Back Porch Side Stage will feature regional musicians.”

This year’s featured musical group will be South for Winter. Here’s how the group has been described- “With a blend of dreamy acoustic duets, foot-stomping folk and bluesy murder ballads, New Zealand-formed and Nashvillebased South for Winter’s sound is as eclectic as their origins. The band is composed of New Zealander Nick Stone, Coloradan Dani Cichon, and Michigander Alex Stradal, and together the three multi-instrumentalists and songwriters combine elements such as clas-sically-trained cello, per-cussive guitar, mandolin, suitcase stomp, poetic lyricism, and haunting melodies into a genre-bending sound described by American Songwriter as “impeccable”.”

Food, food, and more food

The festival will have three different stages for musicians to showcase their talents. (Photos provided)

will be up for eating at the festival. The annual Livermush Eating Contest heads up this gustatory galore. Look for seven times champ Michael Ellis to sink his teeth into the goodness as he seeks another crown - and the $150 grand prize jackpot.

The festival will have plenty of activities for kids including pumpkin painting.

“Last year Michael ate over two one-pound cakes of livermush in nine minutes,” said Owens-Patton.

According to OwensPatton, other livermush lovers last year wolfed down over 6,000 sandwiches of the stuff. But livermush is more than sandwiches, to celebrate its versatility, there will be a livermush recipe contest where folks can get creative with it.

In addition to the livermush, other eats and drinks on the menu include burgers, hot dogs, fries, sweets, craft beer, wine, and much more.

Last year’s festival drew over 18,000 folks and all signs are pointing to an even bigger turnout this year. OwensPatton and her team have been working hard preparing for the big day, but it’s a labor of love.

“It takes over 1,000 hours of work to make it happen,” she said. “But on festival day it’s worth it to see all the people enjoying the activities and eating livermush.”

Remove the Mask

This month, as many prepare to celebrate Halloween, you can feel the excitement in the air: pumpkins on porches, candy lining the store shelves, and costumes of every kind waiting to be worn. People spend hours searching for the perfect outfit or mask that hides their identity and lets them pretend to be someone else. For a night, it’s all in fun. But for many, wearing a mask isn’t just for a holiday. It’s how they live every day. People wear a mask for various reasons, yet deep down, many are exhausted from pretending. But here’s the truth: God never asked us to wear a mask. He created us to be authentic, whole, and free. Colossians 3:9-10 (NLT) says, “ Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.”

who sometimes doubts, the one who’s been hurt, the one who’s still growing, because when we hide behind a false identity, we block others from seeing the real us, and we also block ourselves from experiencing God’s transforming love. Masks might protect us from rejection, but they also prevent true connection. God can only heal what we’re willing to reveal. When we come before Him honestly, something powerful happens. The masks start to lose their grip. The fear of what people think begins to fade. The weight of pretending lifts off our shoulders, and in its place comes peace, the kind that only comes from being fully known and fully loved by God.

NOTHING HIDDEN

God gently helps us remove each one. True freedom begins when we allow God to unmask our hearts and reveal the masterpiece He created us to be.

LET’S PRAY:

“Father God, in the name of Jesus, that name that is above all names, I give you praise. Forgive me for wearing a mask that hides my true self. You know all things. Help me to be the person you are calling me to be. I am so grateful that you know all my flaws, yet you love me anyway. I love you. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

TRUE SELF

God invites us to remove what’s false and walk in who we really are in Christ. He’s not asking for the polished version of you; He wants the real you, the one

Maybe this month as others put on masks, God is inviting you to take yours off. Let Him see you. Let Him love you. He sees it all anyway, so we can be honest before him. Hebrews 4:13 (NLT) says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.”

This month, as we journey through this devotional series, we’ll look at the different masks we wear and how

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

The Poetry Fox will be on hand at this year’s event writing his custom made poems.

Bess Alice Hambright Phifer celebrates 108th birthday Oct. 13

Bess Phifer will enjoy her 108th birthday with family and friends on Monday, October 13. As a child, she was called Bess Alice by everyone. Her family attended Antioch Baptist Church, and she attended school in a oneroom schoolhouse her mother founded.

She grew up near Kings Mountain National Military Park, but the land was not owned by the National Park back then. Everyone around here just called it the battleground.

When Bess was 12, she attended the one-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. Her mother had responsibilities during the celebration, so Bess and her siblings were free to wander.

During an interview with Bess

eight years ago for her 100th birthday, she remembered the throngs of people in attendance at the battleground for the celebration. “The President’s speech was good; I remember seeing the speaker’s stand. Most of all,” she said, “I remember having the whole day free with all those people I didn’t know.” She had never seen so many gathered in one place.

After college, Bess became a teacher. During the throes of World War II, she did her part by knitting hats and gloves for servicemen. She even worked in the Charlotte Shell Plant. But her heart called her to do more.

“When they told me they needed me to go to Guam, I got a week off. I spent a right smart time with Marriott that week,” she recalled with a smile.

The following week, she was in Guam. While there, Bess was assigned to a field hospital processing the troops freed from prison camps. “Most had spent four or five years as prisoners. And to see those fellows…” her voice trailed off. “I stayed up all night trying to process who they were, to gather a little information about them.

“They looked like death standing… practically every one of them. I had seen a lot of wounded because, in Guam, I stayed at the field hospital. There were 200 to 300 doctors there. I ate in the same places the men ate. In that hospital, all the wounded fellows were there. They couldn’t go home because they were waiting for transportation.

days traveling home to her family.

She spoke with her principal when she heard she could support the war effort by serving in the Red Cross overseas. She applied for and was accepted into the Red Cross with his permission. She worked in Hilo and was stationed at a Rest Camp in Hawaii National Park, where soldiers returning from the war were on R&R. Soldiers received five days off to enjoy activities such as golf, crafts, archery, biking, reading, and horseback riding. Bess’s job was to boost morale, and she worked 15-hour days to that end.

“All those fellows and no complaints from them,” she pauses. “That was what I noticed the most; they didn’t complain. Some were missing legs and arms. None in the beds could get up.

While working in Hawaii, Bess met her future husband, Marriott Phifer, a native of Kings Mountain. Due to her duties, she didn’t see him much when he was at the camp. When asked if they ever dated in the Pacific, Bess replied,

“I helped set up a place where the guys could have a magazine to read or listen to the radio. These guys hadn’t had radios or anything like that for years. Some of them didn’t even know who they were.”

When discharged and on her way stateside, Lieutenant Bess

After the war, she returned home to Hambright Road and married Marriott Phifer in a double wedding with her sister. Together, Bess and Marriott had four children: Dr. Reta Phifer, Doyt Phifer, Connie Savell, and M.D. Phifer Jr., along with one granddaughter, Lesley Phifer. Bess served her community, her nation, and all those men who truly needed her most on the Isle of Guam. In every case, she did her job exceptionally well. And those who know her are grateful for her service.

Happy 108th birthday, Bess Alice!

Harry’s had a few wild nights chasing adventure, and some wild lady doggies, but those days are behind him now! After landing in the shelter, this two-year-old, 40-pound bundle of love stole our hearts the moment we met him.

Harry is a bearded collie (we have sent off a DNA test so we will know soon if there is anything else mixed in). We’ve taken care of his neuter (so no more romantic escapades), and he’s settling into rescue life beautifully. Harry is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and on all preventives.

Harry is looking for an “active family” who’ll give him room to run, play, and explore. He’s a bit of an escape artist, so a **secure outdoor area** is a must. He’d thrive with someone who loves hiking, outdoor adventures, and lots of quality time together.

It’s Not Too Early to Get Your Flu Shot

Flu vaccine available at Cleveland County Health Department beginning October 1st

As of this weekend, deer season is officially open in every state. I already feel like I’m behind because I have yet to go. I hope to change that tomorrow. I’ll hunt but not because I have located a good buck, but because I just need to sit with my thoughts in a tree stand – surrounded by those things that are trustworthy and bring a sense of certainty to me. Don’t get me wrong, my head will be on a swivel, looking for a rack of antlers moving through the woods. But I am more so looking forward to what’s in the background than I am the subject matter. And the smell. For some reason I have been looking forward to the smell. My mind wonders at the smell. I have shared many times that while we have a description and some characteristics of what heaven might look like; there is no indication in the scriptures of what heaven might smell like. I know, however, it will not come from constructed walls and concrete walkways, but most likely from something as simple as dirt. Yes, maybe dirt. After all that is the smell of home.

We know that animals locate their own by smell. Whether it’s deer or cows, they know their own by the unique smell. You love how your mother smelled. Even now, you love the smell of the one you love. You even love the blanket that you had as a child, and even the one you have now. Because it smelled/smells like home. Isn’t that strange? And neat? In fact, when that blanket smells funny, you wash it because it needs to smell like home. Why? There is comfort and certainty at home. There is rest at home. There is trust at home. As people made in the image of God, we have two homes. We have earthly parents and our man-made home, and then we have the place where God took dirt and made our earliest grandparents and our earliest home. I think that’s why I look forward to the smell of the woods. Right now, in all that is going in my life, I need home. I need a bed of dirt and a blanket of dew and God whispering through the trees, that everything is going to be alright. Maybe you too need to go home.

The Cleveland County Health Department joins the NC Division of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in encouraging everyone to protect themselves by getting vaccinated against the flu. Everyone aged 6 months and older is encouraged to be immunized.

Flu vaccine is available at the Cleveland County Health Department effective Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The vaccine is available Monday - Friday from 8:00 am – 11:30 am and 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment necessary.

It is not too early. The vaccine is safe and effective and the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu.

In addition to vaccination, continue practicing healthy habits to protect yourself and others from flu viruses:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Throw the tissue in the trash promptly after use.

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

• Stay home if you are sick. You should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care.

The flu vaccine is free of charge for children 18 and younger who have Medicaid, do not have insurance, or are underinsured (meaning insurance does not cover the flu vaccine). The vaccine will also be free for uninsured (non-Medicaid) pregnant women 19 and older who are served by the health department and persons of any age enrolled in the “Family Planning Medicaid Program” receiving services at the health department. If you have insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, we will bill these third-party payers. We also have available a limited number of high dose flu vaccines for those 65 and older. Insurance, Medicare or Medicaid can be billed for these vaccines. Individuals who do not meet any of the above criteria for a free flu vaccine and who do not have insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare may call the health department at 980484-5100 for additional information.

To learn more about the flu, please visit www.flu. nc.gov.
