Bess Alice Hambright Phifer celebrates 108th birthday Oct. 13
By Loretta Cozart
Bess Phifer will enjoy her 108th birthday with family and friends on Monday, October 13. As a child, she was called Bess Alice by everyone. Her family attended Antioch Baptist Church, and she attended school in a oneroom schoolhouse her mother founded. She grew up near Kings Mountain National Military Park, but the land was not owned by the National Park back then. Everyone around
here just called it the battleground.
When Bess was 12, she attended the one-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. Her mother had responsibilities during the celebration, so Bess and her siblings were free to wander.
During an interview with Bess eight years ago for her 100th birthday, she remembered the throngs of people in attendance at the battleground for the celebration.
“The President’s speech was good; I remember seeing the speaker’s stand. Most of all,” she said, “I remember See BESS, Page 7A

Pedestrian killed near Cleveland Co. Fairgrounds
A 79 year old woman was killed Wednesday afternoon, October 1, after being struck by a vehicle while crossing East Marion Street near the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, according to Shelby Police. The fatal incident occurred just before 3 p.m., as crowds were gathering for one of the busiest days of the annual Cleveland County Agricultural Fair.
The incident was reported by WBTV News, WSOC-TV News, Queen City News, The Shelby Star, and other news outlets.
Police said the woman, later identified by family as Sarah Queen, was attempting to cross the roadway near the fair’s main entrance when she was hit by a westbound vehicle. Emergency personnel from Cleveland County EMS and Shelby Fire & Rescue treated her at the scene before transporting her to Atrium Health–Cleveland, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser confirmed the details in a statement Wednesday evening.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Shelby Police Department are with her family,” Fraser said, adding that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Fraser noted that the speed of the vehicle was not immediately known and that no charges had been filed as of October 1. The driver, identified only as an 82 year old man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
North Carolina Highway Patrol temporarily closed a section of East Marion Street outside the fairgrounds while officers conducted their in-
vestigation. The closure caused delays at the fair’s main entrance, though the event itself remained open.
Family members and community leaders confirmed that Queen was a longtime Shelby resident and a dedicated volunteer at the Cleveland County Fair.
According to WSOC-TV News, she had been on her way to volunteer when she was struck.
“It’s a sad situation,” said fair attendee Kello Mozeak, who was present when news of the accident spread. “You don’t expect something like this to happen right outside the gates.”
Another fairgoer, Thomas Hook, reflected on Queen’s dedication:
“Every year. It was religion to come to the fair,” Hook told WSOC. “She was always here, always helping.”
The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about pedestrian safety along East Marion Street, a busy thoroughfare that sees heavy traffic during the fair. Residents and attendees noted that the area lacks sufficient crosswalk protection.
“This street is notoriously unprotected,” one local resident commented on WBTV News’ coverage of the incident. “So many crosswalks that people blow through.”
Fair organizers acknowledged the risks and pledged to increase safety measures for the remainder of the event. Lorie Poston, a fair organizer, urged drivers and pedestrians alike to exercise caution.
“Please slow down. Please pay attention,” Poston said. “We want everyone to enjoy the fair and get home

City introduces new Water Resources Director, addresses staffing issues
By Allyson Parker
The Kings Mountain City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 23, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 110 Gold Street.
Three citizens addressed the council during the public comment portion of the meeting, sharing feedback and concerns primarily regarding the city’s water quality.
Resources. Nash brings considerable experience to the role, having previously worked for 15 years in Gaston County and most recently in Dare County, where he earned the Best Tasting Water Award. Nash affirmed his commitment to enhancing water quality in Kings Mountain and looks forward to working closely with city staff and the community.
Chris Pullen of Canterbury Road expressed appreciation for the recent improvements in the city’s drinking water, commending the council’s continued efforts to enhance it further. Tim Saunders of McGinnis Street echoed similar concerns and hopes for ongoing improvements.
Closing the Citizen Recognition portion of the meeting, resident Christina Hildebran encouraged continued community involvement. Drawing on her experience with similar city projects in Texas, she emphasized the importance of civic engagement in developing a Strategic Plan for the betterment of Kings Mountain.
City Manager Todd Carpenter introduced William Nash, the newly appointed Director of Water
Cameron Allison, Operations Manager for the Kings Mountain YMCA. Allison updated the council on various community initiatives spearheaded by the Kings Mountain and Cleveland County YMCAs, including a summer water safety course offered to all second-grade students in Cleveland County. The program provides essential water safety tips and introduces basic swimming techniques.
Allison also highlighted the upcoming Rockin’ Jingle Bell Run 5K, set for December 26 and cosponsored by First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain. He anticipates that the event will draw at least 600 visitors from outside the area. Additionally, he informed YMCA members that the facility is undergoing repairs to the gym floor. The completion date will be shared by the Kings Mountain Family YMCA soon.
City council members had no questions following
the presentation. Fire Chief Greg Main presented a request to combine three parttime firefighter positions into one full- time position, which the council approved. In staffing matters, Kings Mountain Police Chief Gerald Childress requested a modification to previously approved hiring plans—from three part-time to one full-time staff position. He explained that the department has struggled to find qualified part-time applicants and emphasized the challenges associated with obtaining BLET-certified applicants. The council approved the request by vote, with one dissenting vote by Councilman Jimmy West.
BLET certification is required to become a police officer in North Carolina, provided by community colleges under the regulation of the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. The 640-hour, 16-week program covers fundamental police skills, culminating in a state-administered certification exam.
The council engaged in a lengthy discussion about bulk waste, solid waste, garbage pickup, and related fees and fines. Although no official action was taken, this initial conversation is likely to continue in the October 1st edition of the Kings Mountain Herald.

A Call to the Righteous to Heal America
Week 2
“If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” — 2 Chronicles 7:14
Without trying to go into any deep exegetical disclosure or to endeavor to offer any type of controversial theological argument, I am back this week to offer simply some conditions I think are practical for the healing of America’s
shame, immoral failures, and maladies being evident in our society.
The Four Conditions for Healing (A) Humble Themselves
Pride is the root of America’s problems - The question of “pride,” is said to come just before a fall. I am bothered by the notion as not to regard mankind as a precious commodity of God. David says of us in Psalms 139:14, “I will praise thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works and that I know right well.”
While we are a great creation of God, we have nothing to boast about but still our pride tends to separate us from our God.
We boast in power, wealth, technology, and freedom—yet we have forgotten the God who gave it. The selfishness of man with his ability to create wealth and technological advance has corrupted
his ability to see himself as servant to God and has become a self- made god in his more practical sense. The power of exploitation of new age advances has given him/her a type of freedom devoid of accountability.
Humility is admitting: “We need You, Lord. We cannot fix this ourselves.”
How many senseless killings and escalated crimes have been perpetrated all because we are refusing to humble ourselves lest we be viewed as being weak. The challenge to humble ourselves is one of the most rewarding accolades one can receive for God and man. Exaltation finds its ascent from the ground of humbleness.
(B) Pray—The opportunity to pray is one of the most rewarding ventures we can make as a child of God. What father does not long for a loving child to call his name. Prayer shakes the heart
of God wherein He will reward with a gentle acceptance, and that acceptance is found in the saying that whosoever call on the name of the Lord shall be saved (heard).
We do not just need a ceremonial prayer, but a heartfelt, desperate prayer. Prayer as offered should not be a prayer of last resort, but instead it must be a prayer of our first response.
I believe that America doesn’t just need policies, it needs prayer closets filled, and altars rebuilt with hearts yielded to God coupled with a hope of great expectation for God to move in deliverance and expediency.
On next week I want to move further with continued requirements and conveyed in God’s response to Solomon. Blessings and Peace

9M in grants awarded to help rebuild WNC
On October 2, Governor Stein announced that 14 nonprofit Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADs) have received more than $9 million in grants for housing repair and reconstruction projects to aid in the recovery of western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.
“More than a year has passed since Hurricane Helene, and we are fortunate that so many volunteer organizations have stepped up to help their neighbors in need,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Their tireless work is critical to our ongoing efforts to get western North Carolinians back in their homes.”
“Our volunteer organization partners are part of the State Emergency Response Team precisely because of their unwavering support of the 10.8 million people who call North Carolina home, including the 3.5 million people in the western region of our state,” said Emergency Management Director Will Ray.
“We appreciate the legislature helping to support the operations of these crucial partners in the recovery process.”
Any volunteer organizations actively involved in ongoing repair and reconstruction projects in the Helene-impacted counties that fell under the Federal Disaster Declaration were eligible to apply. These grants were made available through the North Carolina General Assembly’s passage of S.L. 2025-2. The General Assembly recently added an additional $18 million in funding to this program to support volunteer organizations, and a new notice of funding opportunity will be released in the near future to continue the granting of awards supporting recovery.
In January 2025, Governor Stein announced an award of an additional $6 million in grants split between Baptists on Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Using these statefunded grants, these organizations together have already completed repairs on more than 500 homes.
The following organizations were awarded grants through this added funding:
• All Hands & All Hearts

One organization, All
tween The Keith Corporation and Matthews Management, Inc. and was billed as the “largest speculative industrial facility under construction on the East Coast,” when it was being completed in 2023. The facility encompasses 1.2 million square feet and is strategically located on Canterbury Road in Kings Mountain, offering convenient access to Interstate 85 and U.S. 74, an essential advantage for distribution operations.
“As a city seeking strategic growth opportunities, today is a stellar day to celebrate the power of synergy, and the realization of a project more than a year in the making; one which promises to bring significant new investment and hundreds of quality jobs to our much-deserved community. On behalf of the City of Kings Mountain, we are elated that Walmart Fulfillment Services has chosen to locate its new distribution center in the Kings Mountain Corporate Center facility. We are grateful for all the key partners, both locally and at the state level, who were instrumental in the vision, planning and execution which has made the dream of this project come true,” said Kings Mountain Mayor, Rob Wagman.
The Gaston County Economic Development Commission would like to welcome Walmart Fulfillment Services to Gaston County and thank our partners in this successful location - the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), the North Carolina Community College System, Gaston College, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, the City of Kings Mountain, and The Keith Corporation.
Hands & Hearts, mobilized to Asheville, North Carolina in September 2024, in response to Hurricane Helene’s record-breaking flooding, supporting immediate and
long-term relief efforts. The organization is still accepting volunteers, partnerships, and donations.
“Here in North Carolina, we’re seeing devastation like
some of the worst storms that we’ve seen affect the United States,” said Jess Thompson, CEO of All Hands & Hearts, a relief organization helping with the rebuild.
Hawkins decorate for seasons
Councilman Tommy Hawkins and his wife, Kay, beautifully decorate their yard for the seasons. The Herald visited their home at 905 Woodside Drive to admire their beautiful flowers, along with a new installation of a cross in the yard for the autumn season. As we transition into the cooler months, be sure to drive by and admire the couple’s hard work in beautifying Kings Mountain.
BESS
From Page 1A having the whole day free with all those people I didn’t know.” She had never seen so many gathered in one place.
After college, Bess became a teacher. During the throes of World War II, she did her part by knitting hats and gloves for servicemen. She even worked in the Charlotte Shell Plant. But her heart called her to do more.
She spoke with her principal when she heard she could support the war effort by serving in the Red Cross overseas. She applied for and was accepted into the Red Cross with his permission. She worked in Hilo and was stationed at a Rest Camp in Hawaii National Park, where soldiers returning from the war were on R&R. Soldiers received five days off to enjoy activities such as golf, crafts, archery, biking, reading, and horseback riding. Bess’s job was to boost morale, and she worked 15-hour days to that end.
While working in Hawaii, Bess met her future husband, Marriott Phifer, a native of Kings Mountain. Due to her duties, she didn’t
see him much when he was at the camp. When asked if they ever dated in the Pacific, Bess replied, “When they told me they needed me to go to Guam, I got a week off. I spent a right smart time with Marriott that week,” she recalled with a smile.
The following week, she was in Guam. While there, Bess was assigned to a field hospital processing the troops freed from prison camps. “Most had spent four or five years as prisoners. And to see those fellows…” her voice trailed off. “I stayed up all night trying to process who they were, to gather a little information about them.
“They looked like death standing… practically every one of them. I had seen a lot of wounded because, in Guam, I stayed at the field hospital. There were 200 to 300 doctors there. I ate in the same places the men ate. In that hospital, all the wounded fellows were there. They couldn’t go home because they were waiting for transportation.
“All those fellows and no complaints from them,” she pauses. “That was what I noticed the most; they didn’t complain. Some were missing
legs and arms. None in the beds could get up.
“I helped set up a place where the guys could have a magazine to read or listen to the radio. These guys hadn’t had radios or anything like that for years. Some of them didn’t even know who they were.”
When discharged and on her way stateside, Lieutenant Bess Alice Hambright witnessed General Douglas MacArthur’s signing the Peace Treaty on the USS Missouri. She spent the next 28 days traveling home to her family.
After the war, she returned home to Hambright Road and married Marriott Phifer in a double wedding with her sister. Together, Bess and Marriott had four children: Dr. Reta Phifer, Doyt Phifer, Connie Savell, and M.D. Phifer Jr., along with one granddaughter, Lesley Phifer. Bess served her community, her nation, and all those men who truly needed her most on the Isle of Guam. In every case, she did her job exceptionally well. And those who know her are grateful for her service.
Happy 108th birthday, Bess Alice!

KM City Council At-Large Jason Nail suspends his campaign
On October 3, At-Large
Kings Mountain City Council Seat Candidate Jason Nail ended his campaign and endorsed opponent Scott Neisler in the race. Nail teased his announcement earlier in the week.
Posting on his personal and campaign social media Meta (Facebook) pages, Nail announced, “After a great deal of thought, reflection and strategic planning, I want to share an important update with you regarding my campaign for Kings Mountain City Council At-Large.
“Although my name will remain on the ballot this election, I want to be upfront and transparent: I have decided to step back from actively campaigning at this time.” He continued, “This choice does not come from fear, doubt, or lack of commitment—far from it. I’ve always been willing to challenge the status quo when I believed it was best for our community.
Right now, I believe stepping back is what’s best for me and for the long-term future of Kings Mountain.
“From the beginning, my only goal has been to see our city return to being the strong, family-friendly, community-focused, and
well-managed town we all know it can be—not one influenced by a select few or outside interests. That mission remains my driving force, and it always will,” Nail said.
“While I won’t be running an active campaign this year, I will continue to stay engaged, to listen, and to advocate for the people of Kings Mountain. It has been a true honor to connect with so many of you during this process—hearing your concerns, your hopes, and your vision for our city. That passion for our community will never fade.”
“I also want to share that I am proud to endorse Scott Neisler. Scott has been a cornerstone of our community for many years. Though he didn’t have a vote during his time as Mayor, his love for this city and commitment to its people never wavered. He knows our community inside and out, brings valuable experience, and truly cares about its future. I believe Scott is the right person to help move Kings Mountain forward.”
“As for me—I will be back! I fully intend to put my name forward again in the future. And when I do, I
will return stronger, more focused, and more determined than ever to fight for the good of every citizen.”
“I believe in this community, I believe in its people, and I believe that together we can build a brighter future for Kings Mountain,” he said.
Later in the day, Nail added a post on his “Vote for Jason Nail for City Council at Large” social media Meta (Facebook) page, “I want to clear something up regarding my recent announcement to withdraw from the Kings Mountain City Council At-Large race. I was not paid, persuaded, or even approached about stepping out of this election. The decision was mine alone, made after careful thought about what I believe is best for our community moving forward. With this move, I truly believe that over the next two election cycles we can achieve real, lasting change in Kings Mountain—for the entire community not just for a select few.”
Nail’s action leaves four candidates actively competing for the at-large position in the coming election: Phil Dee, Bruce W. King, Scott Neisler, and Curtis Pressley.
