When we hear these words associated with the Salvation Army (SA), it prompts us to consider what the SA does in our community. One may think of the Red Kettle campaign at Christmas, but the SA serves people who need help yearround. The brand promise is rooted in the mission to serve the most people who have the greatest need. It originated from a quote by the SA Co-founder Catherine Booth: “There is no reward equal to that of doing the most good to the most people in the most need.”
For over sixty-five years, the Salvation Army has been an integral part of Shelby. Since the formation of the United Way in 1959, the SA has been one of the eight original agencies that benefited from the United Way’s fundraising efforts. This long-standing presence in
our community is a testament to the SA’s commitment to serving those in need.
Sgt. Joseph and Patti Rodgers, SA officers assigned to Shelby, work year-round to meet this mission. The SA has two Family Stores, offering clothes in Cleveland and Rutherford counties. Individuals may make donations to the stores, and the store will organize the clothes and household items so that individuals can purchase them
at a reduced price. Clothing may be given to a family that is in need by the Social Service offices located inside Family Stores
Over the years, approximately ten thousand pieces of clothing have been donated to those in need by the SA Social Services at the Family Stores at 310 W. Dixon Boulevard in Shel-by, Cleveland County, and at 256 W. Main Street in Forrest City, Rutherford County.
In addition, individuals who qualify may receive assistance from the SA food pantry, while supplies are available, to help fill their food insecurities. The Family Stores have helped over a thousand disadvantaged individuals and families in Cleveland and Rutherford counties. Additionally, besides supplying food and clothing, the SA provides emergency rent and utilities assistance. During
Hurricane Helena, the SA was one of the first agencies to respond to the needs of families affected by the disaster.
Sgts. Rodgers are the pastors of the SA church, which meets at 10 am for Sunday School, 11 am for Sunday Worship Service, and at 5 pm on Wednesday for midweek services at the 315 North Lafayette St. location.
See SALVATION ARMY, Page 7
At Christmas, the the SA partners with companies, churches, and individuals to host the Angel Trees program, providing Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in our community. Individuals select a child from the Angel Tree, which includes the child’s age and “wish list.” The individual then purchases the gift, and it is distributed to the family by the SA.

If you fish in any tournaments, you know you have to get up early to travel and fish 8 hours.
There are no fan stands, no cheerleaders, no band playing at halftime. This is a long day and requires dedication. Cleveland County Bass Anglers, (CCBA) local High School and Jr High Fishing Team, are in their 5th year! CCBA is a great organization for the youth of our county to compete in the sport of fishing and gives the them the opportunity of going to college on a scholarship.
CCBA fished at Lake Tillery on September 20th. There were 74 NC High School teams and 19 NC Jr High teams that competed against each other. CCBA’s Jon Gavin Dellinger and Caiden Little took 3rd place in the High School Series with a weight of 13.82 lbs and Korben Burgess and Mack Josey finished 5th with a bag weighing 5.50lbs in the Jr High Series.

The Red Kettle campaign is a tradition that most people associate with the SA. It started in San Francisco in 1891 and has become one of the longest-running and most recognizable charitable fundraisers. In Shelby, local food markets and retail stores allow volunteers to place a Red Kettle in front of the store, and volunteers ring the bell to encourage donations. This personal connection, where volunteers directly interact with donors, fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility. Donations to the Red Kettle stay

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
(4th & Final Part of the “Butterfly” Series)
When a butterfly finally emerges from its cocoon, it doesn’t crawl anymore - it flies! What once inched along the ground now soars through the sky. This is more than beauty; it is destiny fulfilled. The butterfly was created for flight, and so were you. In Christ, your life has gone through the greatest transformation imaginable. You are no longer who you used to be. The old you which was weighed down by sin, fear, and limitation has been crucified with Christ. You are a new creation, designed to live with freedom, joy, and purpose. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” When you discover your unique purpose and walk in it, life becomes filled with meaning and fulfillment. It doesn’t mean that everything is going to be easy or even enjoyable, but it gives you a supernatural strength to keep moving forward, because you are in God’s will and your purpose is greater than you.
STEP BOLDLY
do all that God has ordained you to do. Please don’t delay, just obey, because your purpose is connected to someone else who needs what God has called you to do.”
CREATED FOR MORE
God has created you for more than just to live, pay taxes and die. You have a divine purpose. Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ
Walking in your God-given purpose means no longer settling for crawling when you were made to fly. It means embracing the identity, gifts, and calling God has placed on your life. The butterfly doesn’t question if it should fly; it simply does what it was designed to do. Likewise, God calls us to step boldly into who he created us to be. In John 10:10 (AMP) Jesus said, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. Abundant life is about living fully alive in Christ, allowing him to use your story for his glory. Your story of trials, tears, and hidden seasons have given you wisdom, compassion, and faith. Now, you are ready to
Let’s Pray: “Lord, you are good and worthy of my praise. Thank you for making me a new creation in Christ. Help me to walk boldly in the purpose you’ve placed on my life. Teach me to live in freedom, joy, and obedience so that others may see your glory in me. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

By
I have hunted big game most of my adult life. I have written about my experiences over 20 years. Those experiences are not spectacular. Most of them have come in random places at random times, and without the resources to make them anything special. That is, I have only paid for one hunt but have relied on special friends for the opportunities I have been given. I have no trophies that would cause anyone to think I am some special or gifted hunter. I am a blue-collar, mediocre private land hunter. Don’t get me wrong, my Midwest opportunities are special, and they create for me an opportunity that many don’t have. But even these only come because of special friends and their unmerited graciousness to me. I have also made ministry to men the biggest part of my life for these past 20 years as well. During that time, I have traveled and spoken at places I would have never dreamed. But again, most of the places fall within what most of us would call normal churches and venues. None of them fall into stadiums or coliseums. I have written 5 books. Four of these are compilations of my articles. Again, nothing outstanding. And their sales? Mediocre at best. But compared to some others, I have been beyond blessed and extremely successful. Why am I telling you all of this? Because I want us all to see that privilege and blessings are not always by our good decisions. That our positions, prosperity, and health are not all actions of our decisions or our free will. Some things – in fact many many things are predetermined by God. For instance, we had no say in what country we would be born in, what race we would be, what would be our mental capabilities – or incapabilities, or who, or what our parents would be. We had no say if our mother would be a drug addict, or our father would begin abusing us as a child. These were forced on each of us by God and by a sinful world. Why? I don’t know. But what I do know and believe is this. Jesus sat and ate with tax collectors and “sinners.” He was criticized for it because everyone believed, at that time, tax collectors were dishonest and sinners were well, sinners. And those who were born blind or had other handicaps, were believed to be that way because of their sin or the sin of their parents. But Jesus knew better, and that’s why he went to them. He understood that many of their predicaments had nothing to do with any decision they made. It had everything to do with what God determined and what sin in general, destroyed. He went to the hurting, hungry, and handicapped, and healed, fed, and restored. And then told his apostles to do the same. He used this sentence. “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.” He was telling the religious crowd that while your religious activity was fine and your spiritual sacrifices were okay, the compassion and kindness you show to those who have not had your privileges are the best. Remember, if you are one who God has blessed with basics or abundance, find those who seemingly haven’t been. It will remind you to be humble in your position and thankful for your determined and unmerited blessings. And perhaps who will be the one God uses to heal, feed, and restore – until God makes everything right in heaven.
