By Janet Hart, City of Kings Mountain Celebrate the 4th of July with the City of Kings Mountain’s Revolutionary 4th RED, WHITE & BOOM fireworks show which begins at 9:45 pm. Prior to the fireworks, a tribute video honoring Kings Mountain’s Class of 2020 graduates will be shown online at 9 pm on the City of Kings Mountain’s Special Events Facebook page.

If you want to see the fireworks, here’s what you need to know: • Social distancing will be

required, and it will be up to you to keep enough distance between yourself and other people.

• The tribute to Kings Mountain’s Class of 2020 will be a video and you can watch it live on the City of Kings Mountain’s Special Event’s Facebook page beginning at approximately 9:00 pm on July 4th.

• Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:45 pm. You can view the fireworks in person or view it live on the City of Kings Mountain’s Special Event’s Facebook page.

• There will not be one central area where Red, White & Boom will be held.

• There will not be activities, entertainment, food vendors or city services.

• See the Fireworks Show Map for the Viewing Area.

Ideal viewing locations will have clear visibility of the

skyline, free of obstructions such as buildings and trees.

Select public property for viewing the show and do not utilize private business parking lots.

• You will only be allowed to park on one side of any street in Kings Mountain to allow accessibility for emergency vehicles. Do not block business entrances or residential driveways.

• Streets will not be closed during the fireworks celebration. Do not gather, sit, or park in the roadway.

Downtown project continues

By Loretta Cozart Work continues on the patio outside 133 West, soon to be Kings Mountain’s newest restaurant.

Heavy rains during the last few weeks have slowed construction progress outdoors, but a curved sidewalk has been poured and a platform for the new stage is taking shape.

The restaurant now sports a new awning on the patio and fresh paint outdoors, indicators that completion is near. In back, a rear entrance has been added. Public access from the Cherokee Street parking lot through to Mountain Street will still be available once the restaurant opens.

City needs your help with Census 2020 Kings Mountain's response rate to Census 2020 is slowly rising, but the city still needs your help to complete the census and increase its response rate. You can help by checking with neighbors, friends, family, coworkers, church members from Kings Mountain who may not have completed their Census yet.

There are many people who don't have access to the internet to complete the Census on-

line, but they can complete their census via the telephone or by a paper survey sent to them in the mail. Here's a link if you need more information: https://2020census.gov/ Take a moment to complete your census, which takes minutes and impacts funding if the city applies for government grants. Those who have not responded by August 1 can expect a surveyor to knock at their door for a personal interview.

Dead & Gone: short film shot at museum

By Loretta Cozart Last Saturday, Brad Hord shot Dead & Gone, at the George Washington Carver House at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum.

“This will be the seventh short film that I have written and produced in Cleveland

County,” said Hord. “It is a tale of revenge from beyond the grave that takes an unexpected turn."

This short film will be submitted to the Made in Carolinas Film Project, a contest that is organized by the Carolina Film Community, a non-profit organiza-

tion based in Charlotte. After that, the film will be submitted to film festivals all across the U.S. and abroad.

The film must be less than four minutes in length to qualify for submission.

Twelve new COVID-19 cases in KM last week Grover sees highest percentage increase in the county

Deloris M. “Tencie” Rhea Deloris M. “Tencie” Rhea, 84, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on June 21, 2020 at Testa Hospice House in Kings Mountain.

She was born in Cleveland County, NC, to the late William J. “Dub” and Alice Sellers Eubanks and was preceded in death by her brother, Doug Eubanks.

Tencie was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church. She retired after 20 years of service from the Kings Mountain National Military Park where she served as a Park Ranger and curator of the museum. Tencie was a licensed pilot for many years, a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a member of The Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots. She enjoyed working with pottery, creating stained glass and building furniture. Tencie was always active and loved working with her hands, gardening, building and laying brick. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed greatly by her family and loved ones.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years: Bud Rhea, of the home; sons: Scott Rhea, Holden Beach, NC and Monty Rhea, Kings Mountain, NC; daughters: Stacie Rhea (Glenn Carroll) and Julie Turner (Jeff), all of Kings Mountain, NC; grandchildren: Dane and Skyler Rhea, Clinton and Wesley Turner and Tucker Carroll; great-grandchild: Karmin Rhea; sister-in-law: Beth Eubanks and nieces Kelly Jones and Susan Falls.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Mountain Rest Cemetery with Reverend Bruce Gwyn officiating.

The family will speak with friends immediately following the interment at the graveside.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church at 113 S. Piedmont Avenue, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

NC peach season kicks off summer season Fresh N.C. peaches are available at farmers markets and roadside stands across the state.

While not a bumper crop, local growers do expect to have plenty of peaches through Labor Day. “NC grows more than two dozen varieties of peaches,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Growers are harvesting clingstone peaches now and will begin harvesting freestone varieties later this month. No matter which you prefer, peach lovers should be able to find plenty of peaches this summer.”

Most of the peaches grown in NC are sold directly to consumers at peach orchards, roadside stands and farmers markets.

NC peaches are tree-ripened when harvested giving them a fresher and sweeter taste than store-bought peaches. While the majority of peaches are grown in the Sandhills, consumers can find peach orchards in about twothirds of the state’s counties.

This year, growers are taking special precautions in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Roadside stands have required employees to wear protective gear such as masks and gloves.

In addition, many growers have installed protective plastic shields at their registers to protect consumers.

Coronavirus cases have risen by 48% in Kings Mountain in the last seven days with 12 new cases bringing our total number of cases to 37. Similar numbers are reflected across Cleveland County, NC, and the nation. However, with 12 new cases, Kings Mountain’s percentage of COVID-19 cases is much higher than those seen by the state or county, but lower than those for Grover.

Grover’s saw an increase of 57%, with four new cases reported. Grover’s total case count is now 11. While the number of individuals impacted seems small, the percentage rate is the highest reported in the county last week.

In Shelby, the number of cases jumped by 37.7%, with 23 new cases reported. In southern Shelby/Boiling Strings, the number increased to 54%, with 20 new confirmed cases.

Last week, Cleveland County reported 210 COVID-19 cases to date, or 64 new cases between June 15 and June 22, nearly 44% increase.

There are currently 70 active cases with nine people hospitalized. Deaths remain at two countywide.

NCDHHS reports 53,605 total COVID-19 cases in the state, an increase of 9,486 in one week. Total deaths currently stand at 1,223, an increase of almost 22%.

The data, when filtered by ethnicity in NC, shows

46% of those who tested positive in the state are Hispanic. By race, 55% of those who tested positive are White and 25% are Black. Men and women contract the virus equally.

Study concludes, wear your face mask

By Loretta Cozart As COVID19 stretches into its fourth month in the Unites States, many people have begun to question the need to wear a face mask in public. Cases of COVID19 in Kings Mountain have climbed to 37, and only two people have died of the virus in Cleveland County.

So, why bother wearing a mask?

A study published by the National Academy of Sciences by UC San Diego, Cal Tech, and Texas A&M confirms that face masks are the most effective means to prevent transmission of the Coronavirus between people.

In the study entitled “Identifying airborne transmission as the dominant route for the spread of COVID-19” regions heavily impacted by COVID19 were considered, including northern Italy, and New York City. The World Health Organization (WHO) advised the public to wear face masks on April 6, saying that it is important to prevent infected persons from spreading the virus.

Italy ordered face covering in public starting on April 6, and the Italian authorities required nationwide mandatory use of face masks on May 4. All New Yorkers

were mandated to use face covering in public starting on April 17, when social distancing was not possible.

According to the study, “Our analysis indicates that face covering reduced the number of infections by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and by over 66,000 in NYC from April 17 to May 9.”

They also state, “Wearing a mask is the key difference in flattening the curve in Italy and New York, compared to Europe and the United States.”

The study concludes, “wearing of face masks in public corresponds to the most effective means to prevent interhuman transmission, and this inexpensive practice, in conjunction with extensive testing, quarantine, and contact tracking, poses the most probable fighting opportunity to stop the COVID-19 pandemic, prior to the development of a vaccine.”

The study goes on to say, “sound science should be effectively communicated to policy makers and should constitute the prime foundation in decision-making amid this pandemic. Implementing policies without a scientific basis could lead to catastrophic consequences, particularly in light of attempts to reopen the economy in many countries.”

It is hard to determine if the rising numbers in COVID-19 locally are a result of relaxed social

distancing or the rural nature of Cleveland County, since more remote areas like Lawndale, Mooresboro, Casar, and Ellenboro have fewer cases.

What we do know is that COVID-19 is transmitted exponentially.

In the US currently,

2,250,000 people have tested positive for the virus and 120,000 have died. The CDC forecasts that another 15,000 people will die from the virus within the next four weeks in the US.

Despite the continued need for social distancing this year, there are numerous fireworks shows and 4th of July activities are available for the family throughout the area during the upcoming holiday weekend. Can’t wait? An early Cramerton Fireworks show will be launched from Goat Island Park in Cramerton, NC beginning at 9:15 pm on Saturday, June 27. The U.S. National Whitewater Center’s is planning is annual 4th of July Festival to be held on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm. New Morganton School of Science and Mathematics approved, funded

By Loretta Cozart On Friday, June 19, Governor Cooper ratified the new Morganton School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) that the General Assembly had approved it on June 11.

In addition, $3,340,591 was appropriated in recurring funds for the 20202021 fiscal year to be allocated to the NCSSM for operating funds, purchase of equipment and supplies, and to establish 46 new positions at the Morganton campus.

At NCSSM’s Facebook page, they posted, “NCSSM's new #WNC campus being built in #Morganton will allow more of NC’s best and brightest students to dig into their passions in the company of others — it's the most recent way we have endeavored to better serve our mission.”

The North Carolina General Assembly established the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in 1978 to provide challenging educational

opportunities for students with special interests and potential in the sciences and mathematics. NCSSM is the nation’s first public residential high school for science, technology, engineering, and math and a global leader in STEM education.

In 1980, during Gov. James B. Hunt’s first administration, NCSSM opened on the grounds of the former Watts Hospital in Durham with 150 high school juniors. It was the first school of its kind in the United States — a public, residential high school welcoming students from across the state to study a specialized curriculum emphasizing science and mathematics, but also offering humanities courses, athletics, and extracurricular opportunities.

Groundbreaking began on the new Morganton campus on a year ago on June 21, 2019.

God Is Just!

(Part 3 of “Attributes of Father God Series”) We pray to a loving Father, but he also is a righteous Judge who creates and upholds laws. God has created natural laws like gravity. No matter what happens, that law never changes. He also has created spiritual laws and precepts that never change as well. He operates and judges based on the laws and principles that he has set in place. DANYALE PATTERSON When we come to him, the Bible says we should come humbly and boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy, knowing that God is always good, righteous, and fair. King David states in Psalms 9:7-8, “But the Lord abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment, and He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.” Job, also says “Surely, God will not act wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice.” (Job 34:12) When you begin to feel overwhelmed by the corruption in the world today, focus on the fact that Father God is just. Reflect on His goodness, and consider this: God Will Fight on the Behalf of the Oppressed “For the cause of the oppressed and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will bring safety to him who yearns.” - Psalm 12:5

Father, I ask you to raise up righteous lawmakers, judges, government officials, police officers, etc., who will courageously stand for what is right. I pray that you would reveal your glory and power in the earth, that will cause people to repent and seek your face. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.”

DAR holds virtual Continental Congress online

By Loretta Cozart This pandemic has impacted every part of our lives, from work, school, and play and the same applies to the Daughters of the American Revolution’s (DAR) annual meeting, referred to as Continental Congress. This year marks the 129th annual Continental Congress held in Washington, DC, just blocks away from the White House. But this year’s event will be virtual, and members are able to enjoy the events from their homes, or in small chapter gatherings across the country from June 24 – June 28.

Thousands of DAR members make the trip to Continental Congress around July 4 each year.

Groups fill hotels inside the beltway and travel back and forth from the DAR buildings via shuttles and taxis during the day.

From start to finish, Continental Congress is busy from morning to night with meetings, award ceremonies, and honoring our military and veterans.

Many go to Continental Congress to take advantage of the DAR’s Library, an extensive collection of genealogical records gathered from across the country.

Others go to meet likeminded individuals who share similar interests and goals in the organization.

DAR members join for a variety of reasons as diverse as the members themselves. Some join to foster good citizenship, educate

youth, preserve history, learn about American history, research genealogy, coordinate local service projects, or to participate in commemorative events.

A good example of a commemorative event witnessed locally occurred in 2016, when the Col. Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter dedicated a marker to African American Patriots at the Battle of Kings Mountain at the Kings Mountain National Military Park. All patriots who participated in the American Revolution deserve to be recognized for their service and three black patriots, among others unknown, are honored there.

In light of recent events, the DAR President General recently shared the

society’s continued commitment to equality on its website saying, “DAR is an organization committed to historic preservation, education and patriotism, and knows that examining history helps us to better understand our nation’s long struggle to provide equality, justice and humanity for all Americans.”

She went on to share,

“Our National Society encourages and celebrates a diverse membership, and we embrace the opportunity to support our members of color. DAR reaffirms to the membership and the public alike that our organization condemns racism. Bias, prejudice and intolerance have no place in the DAR or America.”

Hospice Cleveland County demonstrates commitment to serving patients during Coronavirus Pandemic SHELBY, NC – Hospice Cleveland County joins hundreds of hospice and community-based palliative care provider members of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in adding their name to the national Commitment to Care sign-on letter. This letter demonstrates a groundswell of support from hospice and palliative care providers who are committed to serving patients and families impacted by COVID19.

The Commitment to Care letter reads in part: Patients impacted by the coronavirus rely on the interdisciplinary, person-centered care that the community-based hospice and palliative community provide. The hospice philosophy of care focuses on caring for the whole person by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and is provided by an interdisciplinary team comprised of physicians, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains, bereavement professionals, volunteers, and allied therapists. As more hospitals reach maximum

capacity, patients continue to be discharged back into the community and the demand for symptom management and emotional and spiritual support grows.

The hospice and community-based palliative care providers who signed on to NHPCO’s letter are demonstrating their commitment to continue to treat patients, ensuring that patients do not die alone, and in some cases saving lives.

Myra McGinnis, Hospice Cleveland County CEO, said “Hospice Cleveland County has always been innovative and responsive to unique patient needs, and this has especially been the case during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our patientcentered care is even more evident during times like these, as we have taken extraordinary precautions to protect our patients, their family members, and our staff. And in spite of the significant challenges, we are continuing to provide

the very high quality, compassionate care that we are known for.”

In the local community, Hospice Cleveland County has taken the following steps relative to the public health crisis: • Produced Face Shields and Face Masks in-house for staff and contacted area churches and craft groups to help.

• Distributed “Healthcare Heroes” Care Packages to staff at area Emergency Rooms working on frontlines. Delivered ‘take care of yourself’ care packages to nurses in area physician offices, facilities, and hospitals.

Provided cases of toilet paper and paper towels for patients’ homes. Delivered “Thinking of You” bags door to door in Kingstown.

• Telehealth visits to patients. Provided facts and online support on Social Media - 10 Things you can do to manage • COVID-10 at home.

Posted links to managing stress and anxiety associated with COVID-19.

DAR members are women who come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of interests.

Their common bond is their lineal descent from patriots of the American Revolution – any woman, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove this lineage is eligible to join.

Mountaineer football star Day Day Wilson commits to play collegiately at Missouri Kings Mountain High football standout Dameon “Day Day” Wilson Sunday afternoon officially committed to continue his career at the University of Missouri.

Wilson, a rising senior and an all-star linebacker for the Mountaineers for the past three seasons, joins teammate Kobe Paysour at the next level.

Paysour, a wide receiver, earlier committed to the University of North Carolina.

Wilson gave his fans, who watched live on Facebook, an anxious moment when he started taking off an outer sweatshirt to make his official announcement. He re-

vealed a University of North Carolina shirt, but then took it off to show a Mizzou shirt.

Wilson was offered by some of the top football schools in the nation, including North and South Carolina, Kentucky and NC State. But, he said he just had a great feeling about playing in the SEC in general, and Missouri in particular.

“They’re just great people out there,” he said. “They have a great coaching staff. I just felt like it is the place for me.”

One of the coaches that recruited him to Mizzou was former Crest athlete Charlie Harbison,

who is Missouri’s assistant head coach.

“A lot of their coaches were at Appalachian State last year when they beat both North Carolina and South Carolina,” Wilson noted.

In making his announcement, Wilson said “I just want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for giving me the ability to play.”

Wilson is the son of James and Rachelle Wilson. His older brothers, Trevon and Javari, also played football at Kings Mountain.

Wilson, who had a team-high 123 tackles last year, has been a part of the winningest era

in KMHS history the past three seasons. The Mountaineers barely missed going to the state championship game last fall when they fell in the Western championship to Charlotte Catholic, 5649, in a state record seven overtimes.

With the uncertainty of the Covid 19 situation, Wilson hopes his high school football career isn’t over. The Mountaineers are expected to begin light preseason workouts July 6.

“We hope to get to play this season, and win the state championship,” he said.

As of now, Kings Mountain and other area high schools will be able to begin outside fall sports conditioning July 6.

Summer learning program Medicare Advantage members to see substantial decrease provides enrichment opportunities for students in premiums next year Gaston County Schools will offer its summer learning program, July 6-31.

This is an excellent academic enrichment opportunity for students. Best of all, the program is free.

Because of concerns related to the coronavirus, the summer program will be conducted in a remote learning format. A device will be provided for a student to use for summer learning, if needed.

The four-week enrichment program is a self-paced, independent learning experience. Students and parents will receive support and resources through the “Gaston At

Home: Summer Edition” webpage, a navigation video, and a telephone hotline that makes it possible to get help from a teacher/ curriculum specialist.

Attending summer learning is a plus for students. The program is designed to give them an opportunity to stay engaged in learning, review previously learned material, and pre-learn new content as a way to get ahead for the upcoming school year. Students also will have an opportunity to learn test preparation strategies.

On June 15, State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, and the State Health Plan (Plan) Board of Trustees announced that premium rates for Medicare Advantage members offering a substantial decrease in cost to dependents of Medicare-eligible members for the 2021 benefit year.

Medicare-eligible members will continue to enjoy premium-free coverage under this plan. Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, eligible dependents will have monthly premiums of only $4 for the Medicare Advantage Base Plan.

Plan pay monthly premiums of $112 for spousal coverage and $224 for family coverage. For the Enhanced Plan, members currently pay a monthly premium of $256 for spousal coverage and $438 for family coverage. These changes come with virtually identical benefits as the previous plan.

In March, the Plan awarded the Medicare Advantage Fully Insured Plan and Related Services contract to Humana. The contract award to Humana was the result of a Request for Proposal, a required, competitive bid process that is a standard practice in state government when a contract has ended and there is continued need for services.

The potential annual cost savings under the new contract will be approximately $197 million or almost $600 million over the course of the three-year contract.

“I’m thrilled that our Medicare-eligible members who teach, protect and otherwise serve can now reap the benefits of this new Humana contract with the ability to add their dependents for only $4 a month,” said Treasurer Folwell. “Our Medicare Advantage plans are a great benefit that an entire family can now enjoy for very little cost to members and taxpayers like them, and the same great

benefits.”

“Our Plan staff is working hard to ensure that this transition to Humana is a smooth one,” said Dee Jones, State Health Plan executive director. “I also want members to understand that Humana offers a national, passive network that allows members to continue seeing their current providers regardless of being in or out of Humana’s network, which is how our Medicare Advantage plans work today.”

All members currently covered under UnitedHealthcare will be moved to Humana for the 2021 benefit year, which begins Jan. 1, 2021. Members will continue to have the choice of the Base or Enhanced plan under Humana as well as the option of the 70/30 Plan, which is administered

by Blue Cross NC. Open Enrollment for 2021 will take place Oct. 15-31, 2020.

The State Health Plan, a division of the Department of State Treasurer, provides health care coverage to more than 727,000 teachers, state employees, retirees, current and former lawmakers, state university and community college personnel, and their dependents. It also provides Medicare-Advantage plans to 155,00 Medicare-eligible members.

NCCARE360 is now available in all 100 counties.

Now, anyone in North Carolina can request services and be connected to an accountable organization to support their immediate and long-term needs. NCCARE360 enables health and community-based organizations to make electronic referrals, communicate in real time, securely share client information, and track outcomes together.

North Carolinians who need assistance can search NCCARE360’s repository of more than 10,000 local services at nccare360.org/resources, access resources by calling 2-1-1, or complete an online form at nccare360. org/request-assistance.

Research has established that having an unmet resource need — including experiencing food insecurity, housing instability, unmet transportation needs and interpersonal violence or toxic stress — can negatively impact health while also increasing health care utilization and costs. Gov. Cooper's current executive order allows restaurants to operate indoors or outdoors at 50 percent capacity, but arbitrarily prohibits other establishments from operating under the same rules.

Additionally, House Bill 594 treats all beverage and dining service establishments the same and allows them to operate at 50% of total capacity. The General Assembly passed similar legislation in House Bill 536, but the bill was vetoed by the Governor.

In House Bill 594, the General Assembly addressed the Governor's concerns with House Bill 536 by allowing the Governor to reclose beverage and dining service establishments with concurrence of the Council of State, a common requirement of emergency authority in North Carolina.

Speaker Tim Moore said, "Once again, the Governor shows that he prioritizes his own power over the livelihoods of responsible small businesses owners and families across North Carolina."

Of HB 594, Governor Cooper said, “Tying the hands of public health officials in times of pandemic is dangerous, especially when case counts and hospitalizations are rising. State and local officials must be able to take swift action during

the COVID-19 emergency to prevent a surge of patients from overwhelming hospitals and endangering the lives of North Carolinians. The bill could restrict leaders who need to respond quickly to outbreaks and protect public health and safety."

Three charged with murder

■ POLICE

On June 15, deputies with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at 3656-18 West Dixon Blvd. Once on scene deputies located two individuals who had been shot. One victim, Nathan Kyle Hester, was taken by ambulance to Atrium Hospital where he later died from his injuries. The other victim received treatment at the scene from EMS. Witnesses stated that a white car came by the residence about an hour prior to the shooting and three individuals began throwing gang signs toward Mr. Hester.

Gardner-Webb hires Director of Diversity and Intercultural Initiatives JeNai Davis Brings Experience in Higher Education and NonProfit Leadership to the Position BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—JeNai Davis, of Greensboro, N.C., has been hired as director of Diversity and Intercultural Initiatives at Gardner-Webb University. This office was created in 2018 by GWU to serve the needs of the various ethnic groups within the student body through programs designed to promote intercultural understanding, awareness, and collaboration. Davis begins on July 13 to prepare for the fall semester.

“I am thrilled to welcome JeNai to Gardner-Webb,” shared Dr. Sarah Currie, vice president of Student Development and dean of students. “She brings experience, education, and professionalism to this position, which will make her a valuable addition to the University and for our students. She worked for the multicultural program at Wingate (N.C.) University and is within weeks of completing her master’s in higher education, with a focus on student affairs. I am excited to see how JeNai continues the expansion of Gardner-Webb’s diversity programs and how she connects with our students.”

Davis, who grew up in Rockingham County, N.C., currently serves as the primary assistant to the director of Lyceum and Multicultural Programs at Wingate.

The Lyceum Series is comprised of cultural and scholarly events students attend during their time at Wingate.

She helps coordinate the events and provides support in various ways.

“I love the small college

JENAI DAVIS environment; along with this, I want to empower Gardner-Webb students and hear their ideas and concerns regarding diversity and inclusion on their campus and aide and help them in the process of seeing these visions come to light,” Davis affirmed. “My goal is to bring light to topics that are often avoided or swept under the rug. Today, society is showing us that for far too long we have ignored issues that need to be discussed.

College students are one of the greatest resources and voices for changes regarding the future. I’m extremely excited to be a part of the Gardner Webb community and bring a new perspective not only to the campus, but the community as well.”

Davis graduated from Wingate in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services and a minor in sociology. She receives her master’s degree this month from Purdue University Global. At Wingate, she has also served as a Gateway Instructor for newly-enrolled students and a housing assistant for the Office of Residence Life and Involvement.

“I am delighted to add JeNai Davis to our leadership team here at Gardner-Webb,” noted GWU President Dr. William M. Downs. “She brings with her valuable experience,

and we’re eager to have her join us. When I interviewed JeNai, I told her that we couldn't expect her to be an ‘Army of One’; instead, she is going to lead campus-wide efforts that bring many people together to help us live up to our commitments in support of diversity. Gardner-Webb really can be a model for how students from all backgrounds succeed at high levels in their academics and in their preparation for life, and JeNai Davis will be one

of many helping build that model.”

In addition to her background in higher education, Davis has worked at Camp Carefree in Stokesdale, N.C., for seven years. The non-profit camp provides a free one-week camping experience for kids with chronic illnesses and disabilities. She began as a volunteer when she was in high school. The opportunity to serve the children became her passion. Since 2017, she has served as a program di-

rector, managing staff and volunteers to ensure campers have fun and their medical needs are met.

Davis feels her combined experiences provide a foundation for her new position.

“Wingate University has very similar dynamics to Gardner-Webb, and being a part of the Lyceum & Multicultural department there helped me grow in my passion to spread knowledge regarding how important it is to be inclusive and open others’ eyes to how diversity

is more than just skin color or gender,” Davis observed.

“Along with this, I’m very passionate about the importance of having tough conversations with others.

Camp Carefree gave me a true understanding of how those with disabilities are oftentimes excluded from society, and it’s important to incorporate programming to expose others to their community and allow their voices to be heard as well.”
