LIBERTY MOUNTAIN CAST– Rehearsals began this past Saturday for the fifth season of “Liberty Mountain.” The play will open Friday June 29 at the Joy Performance Center in Kings Mountain. Photo provided by Bob Inman

Liberty Mountain returns for fifth season By Loretta Cozart ‘Liberty Mountain’ returns for its fifth season at the Joy Performance Theater on July 29th. For those not familiar, ‘Liberty Mountain’ is a play written about the Battle of Kings Mountain and those who lived it, written by Robert Inman. Bob, as he is known by most here, is a playwright, author, retired news anchor for

WBTV, and descendant of one of the patriots at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Caleb Sigmon is the Artistic Director who makes those fight and battle scenes look real. And, for theater, battle scenes can be difficult. He interprets the words of the play and brings the story to life through staging, lights, and sound. Many of the cast members

have been in the play for all five seasons. The cast began rehearsals, which means we aren’t far from opening night. In addition to seeing a lot more cars in the downtown area at night, local businesses can anticipate brisk business during the run of ‘Liberty Mountain.’ Jackie Sibley-Newton, Director of Travel & Tourism of the Cleveland County Chamber

of Commerce says that visitor spending resulted in tax receipts of $1.68 million dollars in Cleveland County in 2015. As a result, each resident pays $74 less in taxes each year. But how does Liberty Mountain help Kings Mountain business owners? “We keep a steady business here,” said Leon Camaj of 238 Cherokee Grill and 238 Pizzeria. “We always notice an increase

in sales and patronage during the four-week run of Liberty Mountain. From 4 pm to 7 pm, folks join us for dinner prior to the performance. Many come back by afterward. When you have a full page of reservations each night of the play, it’s a good thing for business.” Camaj, a New York native, continues, “After the play, guests come in and tell us it is their second or third

year seeing it and how much they enjoy watching the performance evolve over time. It is exciting how much the community supports this play. We do our part to support it, too. I’ve lived in Kings Mountain four years now and I love it here. I’m not going anywhere.” To find out more about ‘Liberty Mountain,’ turn to page 3A.

City of KM shares first place honors at Business Showcase By Loretta Cozart The 2018 Cleveland County Chamber’s Business Showcase was hosted at Duke Energy Training Facility in Kings Mountain on June 12, from

5:30-8:30 p.m. The theme of the showcase was Disney Magic. The City of Kings Mountain’s Disney themed exhibit shared First Place honors. The Cleveland County Chamber’s Business Showcase is a premier networking event, which provides opportunities to maximize

a company’s visibility through displays of products and services, along with the chance to connect personally with potential customers. This event is held every year in Kings Mountain and features a trade show for businesses and a kickoff reception.

By Loretta Cozart Resurrection Lutheran Church still has space available in their Community Garden for folks interested in planting. Space is available for members of the congregation and the community who have an interest in growing their own fruits and vegetables. A small tiller is even available to turn the soil. "Every year is different. I don’t know how farmers aren’t stressed every spring, because I worry over too much rain, not enough rain, late freeze, turning the land, etc. Yet every year we are

thrilled with the harvest and love cooking, eating and sharing fresh green beans, cantaloupe, peas, squash, zucchini, okra, and more," said Kim DeVane who is one of the managers of the Community Garden. Gardening isn't just about growing fruits and vegetables though. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), moderate-intensity level activity for 2.5 hours each week can reduce the risk for obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, depression, colon

cancer and premature death. Those that choose gardening as their moderate-intensity exercise are more likely to exercise 40-50 minutes longer on average than those that choose activities like walking or biking. "Since we missed planting cabbage, kale, lettuce in the spring, we are going to try a fall planting, so folks can call 704-974-6300 and leave a message if interested," said DeVane. Resurrection Lutheran Church provides the land and water, you supply the labor and TLC.
