BY ZACH CHANDLER There was something extremely calming about seeing the last of the orange leaves fall from the tree's withered branches. I lay back in my bed and saw the pale leaves slowly replay through my mind. After a few minutes, I drifted off to sleep. Slowly my mind began to dream. I saw the withered trees. I saw the pale leaves. I saw the brown grass. My dream seemed to be leading me through my own neighborhood. I saw my friend's bike. I saw my grandmother's house. I saw the charred remains of my neighbor's house, which had only burnt down a month earlier. At the end of the cul de sac, there was a new house. For a brief moment, it felt strangely familiar. That feeling quickly disappeared and returned in the form of intense curiosity. I walked up the crumbling sidewalk and stopped in front of the rotting steps. The house seemed menacing and comforting at the same time. I mustered up the courage to walk up the steps. Each step seemed more unsettling than the last. Suddenly, I fell through the steps.

I expected to hit hard ground but I kept falling. I screamed as loud as I possibly could. I couldn't see, I couldn't feel, and I couldn't even hear myself screaming.

After what seemed like an eternity, the ground came into view. I braced myself for a tremendous impact.

What seemed like an eternity later, I regained my composure and walked down a narrow dirt hallway. The dirt was silky smooth and had no roots or rocks entwining it. It seemed as though it were from a different world. The tunnel twisted and turned and finally came to an end. The narrow tunnel opened up to a slightly larger tunnel. It was sparkling with mirrors. I could see myself from a thousand different angles. I turned around, mesmerized by the sheer amount of mirrors. I heard a soft hissing noise and quickly turned around. A white fog was slowly flooding the mirrors. They no longer reflected anything but a thick mist. After a few minutes, the thousands of mirrors had become completely filled. Curiously, I approached the wall in front of me. As I got closer, the mist slowly lowered its thick veil. I could see the faint outlines of people. I slowly walked forward, slightly anxious about what the mirrors could be holding. The closer I walked, the clearer the mirrors seemed to get. I stopped walking.

The Mist in the mirror was now nothing more than hot steam in a shower. I stepped closer. All in one movement, the mirror in front of me crystallized and started to glow.

It was a soft orange glow, like an early morning sunset.

Curious, I stepped closer. I could see the faint outline of a face. Its shadowy form was transparent, yet strangely visible. I felt like I could hear it whispering to me. I became entranced by the figure, steadily growing more drowsy. I woke up in a pitch dark room. I could see the face clearly now. It was the face of Mrs. Ava, my neighbor.

I could see other shapes coming into form. The wisps of smoke formed into scenes of her life. I saw her dead husband, lying peacefully in his oak casket, I saw her debt growing in the background. I saw her house, charred and burned, just as it had been before the demolition. Pieces of her life swirled around, each seeming worse than the other. I was shocked, unsure of what to do in the presence of someone's worst memories. I knew I was here for a reason, but I didn't know what. I struggled for what seemed like hours. I lay down and stared up at the colorless ceiling, watching the memories swirl above me.

I felt helpless. The memories began to swirl even faster and looked like they had begun to fade. I desperately wanted to help her. I imagined those memories fading, replaced by better versions of themselves. I imagined her husband coming home with takeout, I imagined wealth replacing her debt, I imagined her house in perfect condition, replacing the charred remains. I squeezed my eyes shut and imagined these things over and over. Slowly, I opened my eyes, expecting to see the terrible memories circling me. Instead, the memories I had created replaced those of Mrs. Ava. They seemed happy, swirling slowly and contentedly. Slowly, I began to feel drowsy again. When I woke up, I was back in the room of mirrors. To my surprise, one mirror was no longer covered in mist. It was crystal clear and contained the memories I had created. I was happy. Thousands of mirrors remained filled, but I could solve those some other time. I had no idea what to do now.

I looked around the room and saw a strangely out-ofplace door. I looked around, unsure of what to do with my discovery. I slowly walked over to the door and saw that it was old, old with an ornate knob, similar to the one I had entered in. Cautiously, I gripped the cold knob and turned it. I opened the door, inch by inch, slowly looking to see the other side. I looked out the door and saw my street. I walked out the door, careful not to fall in through the steps again. I stepped down onto the sidewalk, then onto the rough asphalt. I saw the withered trees. I saw the pale leaves. I saw the brown grass. I saw my friend's bike. I saw my grandmother's house. As I walked further down the street, I half expected to see the remains of Mrs. Ava's house, but instead, the lot was inhabited by a rather large version of her previous house. I turned around and saw that the old manor had disappeared, leaving the cul de sac as empty as before. I walked back to my house and opened the front door. Everyone was still asleep. In the distance. I saw the sun begin to peek its head over the horizon. I climbed back in bed and saw one last leaf fall from the tree.

THE STORMS OF EVERTON

As the sun sets, the desert wasteland glows a brilliant red. Mia runs up a dune as an eerie chill settles around her. Heading over the hill, she sees a small village in the distance. She hurriedly heads in the direction of the village as she realizes night is coming, and quickly at that. By the time she arrives at the village, the sky is completely darkened and the stars are showing. Stopping at the gate of the town, she asks one of the guards where she is. She receives no response, and decides to continue on her journey through the busy village. Soon, she settles herself in the care of an old inn. After settling into her room, she headed downstairs for a short meal. Pushing through a crowd by the dining room bar, she hears whispers of something, something urgent, but she can't quite distinguish it against the yells emitting from the group. She continues on until she gets to an empty table and orders some steamed chicken dumplings and rice. She thought it very expensive considering the quality of the food and inn.

Once she paid for the meal she headed back up to her room.

Exhausted from her journey, she collapsed onto her creaky bed.

She wakes up early in the morning. There's an eerie silence that falls over everything like a fog. She finds it awkward to be surrounded by so much silence, and soon decides to go back down the stairwell. When she arrives in the dining hall she is surprised to see that there is no one there. She swiftly inspects the area and finds not one person. She runs outside and finds the town that was earlier a bustling city place completely deserted, except for one small building. It seems more than generous to call it a building for it seems more like a shack. She slowly approaches the structure as it catched her attention and finds a small group of people. They all seem ragged and tired. They talk in hushed tones in a small circle. Looking at the group, it seems that they all wear a loose uniform consisting of simple leather armor with a symbol close to the breastplate. Trying to get a closer look at the group, Mia pushes in to join the circle and finds herself shut out by the group. In one last desperate attempt to get a look at the mysterious item the group was huddling around, she calls out to the group and finds herself without any answer. The stares of the people before her force her out of the room and back out to the streets of the city, leaving her with only her thoughts. She ventures on into a deeper part of the town, here she finds slightly more people, but not much more was different. She walks to another group similar to the one that she had encountered before, just with a different symbol on their armor and many different weapons on their backs. Mia wonders if the symbol meant allegiance to a faction or something of the sort. She silently hopes for better luck than she had last time as she crossed the windblown streets towards the group.

This time, when she walks in, she hears people murmuring about her but she is soon accepted as a member of the group. Although Mia knew it could only be temporary, she felt some shard of comfort with the group. They soon made plans to journey outside the village and back into the surrounding wasteland. Hesitant, Mia finally decides to go with her new guild. After all, it would be better to be in the middle of a desert than alone. Right? Walking outside of the gates, the party soon began to notice a large storm coming their way. It seemed that the only one to panic was Mia. The rest of them just walk straight in the direction of the storm. Mia questions the others about what the storm was, but only receives a few chuckles. The storm seemed to only grow in size, and Mia's fear grew steadily, for even the other members of her party were concerned. Suddenly, the leaders of the group slowed to a stop, holding a hand in an unknown gesture. Almost immediately, everyone but Mia unsheathed their weapon and held it at the ready.

As a climber, cyclist, kayaker, dog walker, ice skater and thrice a week grocery shopper, I tend to, you know, get around. While growing up in the Emerald City (aka Seattle), my baby boomer parents modeled, and expected, that I hold doors, make eye contact, say 'Thank you", greet strangers with a smile and perhaps a 'Hello', and even take off my hat when entering a building. I guess you could say they were into manners. So when I'm out and about here in our fair city, the People's Republic of Boulder, maybe I pour the pleasantries on a little thick, and perhaps my expectations for what I might receive in return are too high. Day after day, my jaw drops as I experience a great number of Boulderites casting their eyes downward, skyward or wayward when I give a soft man-nod, a loose peace sign wave, or ask 'S'up?'.

Held doors, smiles, greetings are often met with silence.

I've puzzled over this cold phenomenon ever since moving to Boulder in 2001 and have come up with a few theories: THEORY #1: IT'S ME. Maybe something about me is more off-putting than I realize, which undermines all of my efforts to be a mannered person in the world. I mean, my wife did say, "I really thought you were a jerk until I got to know you,” back when we first met.

THEORY #2:SOLIPSISM, or something like that. Ranking 18th for most educated towns in the United States, Boulder has an impressive percentage of people living in their heads. Add to that all the people doing sun salutations, sitting in silence on biscuit shaped pads at Shambala or racing up Left Head canyon on road bikes to be the King of the Mountain, and you've got a lot of people who spend a lot of their free time on, well, self-improving.

THEORY #3: WEALTH. Many years ago I read an article where the author recounted being stuck on the side of the road, having run out of gas. I believe it was in L.A. Hundreds of cars drove past. No one stopped. Then a van on its last leg pulled over. It was the most run down vehicle the author had seen while waiting for help. The family inside made room and drove the author to fill up a container with gas.

Then they drove him back to his car. The author reflected that perhaps there is an inverse relationship between wealth and community, meaning that the more money you have the less you truly need a network of people, whereas, people with less understand more intimately that life doesn't work out so well if you can't, every once and while, lean on your community for help, and in order to do that you need to be in good standing with your neighbors, your community.

THEORY #4: TECHNOLOGY. Could it be that when we spend too much time staring at screens that we feel awkward and a little out of practice at IRL interactions with something as complex and dynamic as a human being?

Who knows? I've talked to a fair number of people who disagree and believe that Boulder is the most friendly place they've ever been. Either way, here's a thought: Given what we're facing (climate change, this pandemic, racial injustices, misogyny, Russia threatening to invade Ukraine, Afghanistan's mounting famine, unprecedented extinctions, etc.), the one thing we can control is how we treat one another. I, for one, will keep smiling, waving, holding doors, and asking "How are you?”, and meaning it.

The Starship is a new(-ish) rocket currently in development by SpaceX. Here's how and why you should get excited about it.

The What: If you didn't happen to know already, rockets make their upward climb by burning a mix of an oxidizer (usually liquid oxygen), and a fuel, (usually a highly refined gasoline, known as kerosene). The mix of the two is typically called a propellant. The extreme heat that results from burning the propellant expands the gaseous fuel and oxidizer fast, and that expansion is directed downward in large nozzles. The resultant downward force pushes the rocket up. This is primarily how rockets have flown since the first one to reach orbit in 1957, and this is how they are expected to fly for the foreseeable future. In most launches, a rocket's primary goal is to reach Earth's orbit.

While pictures and videos from up there seem to show a zerogravity environment, it is important to remember that Earth's gravity still applies in orbit. Extreme sideways velocity just keeps things from falling down. In effect, being in orbit means that you are constantly falling towards Earth, but missing, falling to the side of the globe instead of onto it. Even in deep space, perhaps between star systems, one is never truly in "zero-G". Say, between our Sun and its closest neighbor, Proxima Centauri, a spacecraft would still be in orbit of the black hole at the center of our galaxy, just like the aforementioned Stars. This is all necessary information because it begins to describe all the problems the Starship must solve. Of course, issue #1 is getting a test flight approved by the FAA. I hope you've got your fingers crossed too.

The Why: The Starship, above all else, is special because it is the first rocket that can, in its entirety, be flown, landed, and

reflown. And landed again. And reflown again. You get the point. While the SpaceX Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy use boosters that can fly, land, and fly again, the second stages (smaller rockets that detach from boosters, with engines better optimized for the vacuum of space) are discarded in orbit with every launch to this day. This discarding is a waste of resources, a waste of time, and generally, a damn shame. Other rockets do even worse, discarding second stages as well as boosters, wasting even more money, even more time, and even more opportunity to inspire. This is why the Falcon lineup is being phased out by Starship. And the Falcons will go along with every other rocket, ever. But don't fret, there's even more good news. The Starship, being a rocket that promotes the hell out of sustainability, burns not kerosene, but liquid methane, a fuel that burns cleaner, both in CO2 output and in soot production. But even still, the good news doesn't stop. With the H2 (hydrogen) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) in our atmosphere, O2 (oxygen) and CH4 (methane), the very propellants of the Starship, can be manufactured. You may think at this point that Starship, in all its futuristic glory, could not provide any more good news. You will be glad to know that you would be wrong. Very, very wrong The Starship, as you know by now, burns both liquid oxygen and liquid methane to produce thrust. You also know that those propellants can be manufactured with the gases in Earth's atmosphere. Since one of Starship's main purposes is to help make humanity multiplanetary, living and thriving on more than on planet at once, the propellants should also be accessible on destination #1: Mars. Thankfully, the atmosphere on the Red Planet has the correct atmospheric makeup to manufacture methane and oxygen too. It seems that propellant-wise, SpaceX really picked a winner. In my opinion, they picked all the winners.

The How: Now you know why to be excited about the Starship, but I don't consider that enough. And as you are reading my

article, I find it to be my right to advise you, particularly on the how, as opposed to the why, to get excited about Starship. The main point I want to make here is that in order to become excited for the Starship, and by proxy, excited for the future, you must become involved in it. Bathe in the future, for it is your life, and a life certainly better than yours now. The key, as long as a career path in space technologies (which is highly recommended) is unlikely, is discussion. Online, in person, wherever you find yourself capable. My secondary point, despite the connotation of “secondary”, is really quite important. It is simply to see rockets fly. In person is, of course, the best, but it is highly apparent from my personal case that a passion for rockets can stew even if not for seeing a single launch in person. My suggestion is a simple policy to follow: See a launch date? Set a reminder. Don't see a launch date? Look for one. Watch a launch. It's bound to be spectacular. Above all, spread the love of Starship. And don't forget you're spreading the love of the future as well.

Origins of Sports

By: Finn Kellogg Basketball The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by a PE teacher named James Naismith. During a winter storm in 1891, Naismith was trying to come up with a fun alternative activity to football and lacrosse, which were common sports at his school.

During the warmer months. These other sports provided lots of exercise, but Naismith wanted a sport that was also less physical than football or soccer, which often ended up with injury. He then came up with basketball, and he asked the school janitor to find 2 boxes he could use for scoring. The janitor came back with 2 peach baskets. Thus the game of basketball was born. Gaga Ball The true origins of Gaga Ball are mostly a mystery. It was once thought that Israeli defense soldiers used Gaga as a training exercise, but this was later proved to be false. The current theory is that Gaga Ball was first brought to the U.S in the 1970's by Jewish camp counselors from Israel. GaGa actually translates to 'Hit Hit' or 'Touch Touch' in Hebrew.

Football Football seems to have rooted from both Soccer and Rugby, Walter Camp a Yale University Athletic department coach has been credited with inventing the modern version of american football. The first college football game was played on November 6th, 1869.

Baseball It has been determined that baseball as we know it today most likely was based off of games from the U.K (such as Cricket) during the revolutionary war era. The first professional league of modern day baseball is thought to be the Knickerbocker baseball club in New York City.

Dodgeball Much like the history of GaGa ball, The history of Dodgeball, is not exactly known, but the current theory is that dodgeball was invented in Africa as a war game. Instead of using a relatively soft rubber ball, they used large rocks and other heavy or sharp objects, and the main purpose of the game was to injure your opponent. The theory is it was used as a war training exercise to prepare for battle. Dr James Caralile is credited for introducing the way to play dodgeball we know today; the story goes that one time Dr. Caralile went on a trip to Africa, and had a chance to watch how dodgeball promoted camaraderie and teamwork. Band and Music Reviews

By: Nate M 2010'S Rihanna. 7/10 I haven't really listened to Rihanna very much, but she is a very talented singer and songwriter.

2000'S

1990'S

Outkast. 6/10 I don't really listen to Outkast, but from what I've heard of them I don't love them. I don't think Outkast is a bad band, they're just not my thing.

Nirvana. 10/10 Nirvana is one of the best bands out there. They started a new genre and also popularized that genre, and became the biggest band in the world without going mainstream. I personally love nirvana, but even if you don't, you have to admit they were influential in so many ways to music and pop culture.

1980'S Michael Jackson. 8/10 I think that Michael Jackson was an extremely talented musician who made great music that millions of people loved. Regardless of his actions, I believe that he was an amazing musician.

1970'S Led Zeppelin. 9/10 Personally, Led Zeppelin isn't one of my favorite bands, but they pioneered heavy metal, and I have to give them credit for that.

1960'S 60s The Beatles. 5/10 I don't think they're a bad band, but I believe The Beatles are very overrated, and the Rolling Stones are much better.

If you are thinking of watching this movie, grab the tissues. There are so many plot twists!!

This film and story is based off of the original Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet. It also has its own original version from the 60’s. But, let me tell you, the reimagined version is EVEN better. Here’s why.

1. The casting. First off, Ariana DeBose is brilliant. The first time I ever saw her I knew there was something so unique about her. She really stepped into Anita’s character so well. I watched an interview about how hard it was for her to step into that role, being both Latina and Black. She explained how difficult it is to step into certain roles when you are not “fully” something. People tend to categorize everyone and say you can only belong to one group. Allowing Ariana to step into this role is aiding in breaking that stereotype and is showing everyone that you can be half Black / half Latina and step into one of those roles. Ansel Egort, who played Tony, in this movie at first glance from the trailer I didn’t think it would work, but there was something about the chemistry between Rachel and Ansel. It was stellar and unmatchable. I caught myself sitting back in my seat and quite literally holding my hands to my mouth because they were so cute and believable together! Overall, the rest of the casting was top notch and just so amazing. Like Mike Faist and the woman who played Valentina. Amazing.

2. The music. The soundtrack was killer. I was seriously blown away at the vocals, which connects to my Ansel point. He was so good and I had no idea he could sing?!

Anyway, Rachel also did a really great job. She hit some high notes that I didn’t even know could be reached.

She really just has an incredible high soprano voice.

Blew me away. And of course Ariana was amazing and just always blows me away because she can literally do anything so flawlessly. Just great vocals all around.

Though the soundtrack was the same as the 60’s version, I found this one hit a lot harder.

3. The choreography. I have been reading from previous reviews that a lot of the dancing was borrowed from the original, and I certainly didn’t mind! It was simply so good. Apparently Ariana’s shoes melted off a couple times on set during those scenes out in the hot sun on the hot cement. Huge commitment from everyone involved.

4. The hidden messages. I really liked the addition of a non-binary character because I feel like it’s important to be aware and inclusive of every gender. And portraying that in a movie really will help that awareness. I am really glad we have some good LGBTQ+ representation nowadays. I also liked the bits of Spanish speaking in the show. It really brought out more culture and was a treat for everyone who understands even bits of spanish. It was very fun to see the diversity in the show’s people.

Overall, an incredibly well done show. If you can, definitely watch it. It deserves so much more credit. I promise, you will not regret it.

Despicable Me:

"Despicable Me” begins with the truth that villains are often more fascinating than heroes. In the first movie we see Gru attempt to steal the moon and is faced by his archrival Vector, who had recently stolen the pyramids.

Gru is cheered ever onward by his faithful minions. To make a villain into the hero of an animated comedy is daring, but the filmmakers bring in three cute kids to restore good feelings. They are Margo, Edith, and Agnes.

Gru finds them at his friendly neighborhood orphanage and takes them home to live with him and help fool Vector. It is entertaining and fun to watch for all ages as well as being funny and energetic.

Death on The Nile 8/10 Classic murder mystery movie with that touch of shock that everyone is waiting for. An adaptation of the book that you won’t want to miss, enjoyable to the very last second. Amazing action and suspense, however some parts can get predictable it was still a fantastic watch.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings 9.5/10 Fantastic action, characters, and realistic sibling representation, what’s not to love about this Marvel movie. Classic shenanigans mixed wonderfully with magic and suspense all in a clear and concise plot. A movie you won’t want to miss.

Knives Out 10/10 Amazing acting and suspense and a twist on the mystery genre. An all time favorite of mine and a great time. With classic eccentric detectives and so many shady characters. A fantastic job right up to the end with a twist you won’t expect.

Encanto 7/10 Beautiful Disney movie with gorgeous animation and a marvelous message about generational trauma and family expectations. Absolutely killer music as well with hits like We Don’t Talk about Bruno and The Family Madrigal.

Fabulous movie that is definitely worth watching.

Cars 2 11/10 A god-given movie that is better than anything I have ever watched. An absolute banger spy movie with amazing graphics and plot. Mystery, suspense, action, and so many cars, a fantastic you won’t want to miss.

Baby Driver 10/10 One of my favorite movies of all time, it’s focused on the driver for a group of bank robbers, and has the perfect mix of action, story, and romance. Plenty of high speed chases, violence, and sketchy situations that will put you on the edge of your seat. I recommend this movie for anyone looking for an amazing movie to watch with friends, or even on your own.
